  • Google App Engine - Calling getSession().invalidate(); causes app engine to act weird.

    When I call hreq.getSession().invalidate(); app engine slows down tremendously. I looked at appstats and saw that on a page where no database calls are made, it was calling memcache.get and datastore.get 23 times each. The stack trace of these calls showed that it was being called from getSession(). This only happens on the production server. Every time I make a request to a page, it makes a bunch of memcache and datastore calls. This slow down goes away though when i restart my browser. When I changed the code to simply set the isLoggedIn property of the session to false, rather than calling hreq.getSession().invalidate();, everything was fine. As a test, I didn't invalidate my session, but I changed the value of my browser's session cookie, and the app engine exhibited the same behavior. Is this a bug with the app engine?

  • Providing a public Web-Hosting service on MS Windows - advice and resources

    Are there any resources offering advice on how to setup a microsoft based web-hosting service? I currently offer LAMP hosting with cPanel, but there is some demand for IIS & SQL Server. As far as I can tell MS Windows Web Server 2008 R2 edition allows unlimited IIS connections. And a per-processor license for MS SQL Server Web Edition 2008 also permits unlimited connections. Where I am falling down is that I can't figure out how to get "unlimited" Active Directory users. I can't use 2008R2 Web Server edition for AD, so I will need the 2008R2 standard edition, I think. Does Microsoft have a provision for using AD in an ISP scenario? I am looking at using the cPanel Enkompas system to manage the Windows software, and Enkompas requires AD for user authentication. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Facebook calling Google App Engine code using GET instead of POST

    I've been developing a Facebook app using Google App Engine in Python and the pyfacebook bindings. For weeks everything worked fine but suddenly it stopped. At first I thought it was a code change so I rolled back the entire dev directory to a version I knew worked, but still it failed. It's possible a change I made to the application's settings caused the issue but, if so, I can't figure out what. I've figured out that the problem is that instead of calling the post(self) method of my Main class, Facebook is calling using a GET. Does anyone know why Facebook would use a GET method instead of a POST? It's an IFrame app. Thanks,

    At the moment, I have lot's of Java which does all kind of nifty stuff and I'm happy with it. The code is command line driven which have been great so far, but I recently decided I want to make the functionality available through web-services. Since my is complex and I'm happy with the way it's written , I don't want go through the pain of porting it to other languages. So I set out on a google journey to find out what web servers exist (on a Linux machine, though it's interesting to hear the answer without that limitation). From what I could find, it seems that there are two viable options: Apache Tomcat and Sun Java Server. What are the reason to choose one on top of the other? what are the strength of each and what are the weaknesses? Or, perhaps, there is a third one which is much easier, flexible and less cumbersome. Anyone?

  • Does <httpRedirect> in web.config work in a mono setup? Or is it IIS7 specific?

    We had some content restructure recently and I'd like to put in some redirect rules into web.config so bookmarks to the old pages can get routed to their new locations/pages. I tried using this approach: <location path="~/product/productA.aspx"> <system.webServer> <httpRedirect enabled="true" destination="~/product/category/productA.aspx" exactDestination="false" childOnly="true" httpResponseStatus="Permanent" /> </system.webServer> </location> But all I'm getting when I go to "http://www.oursite.com/product/productA.aspx" is our http 404 page. Am I doing something wrong, or is the httpRedirect tag in web.config not supported in mono? worked, but not ideal for what we want to achieve. Thank you :)

  • Web application and remote storage of files

    Hi have a web application that can store lots and lots of files on the server. i.e. users upload data to it. The files are stored below a particular storage path. The web host will be an IBM xseries 345. However, the disks are really expensive so we would like to put the files onto a less expensive server. Now here is the question. Should I use an NFS mount on the IBM server of a path on the storage server? Or should I write some scripts to upload the files to the storage server instead. Both the storage server and the web host are on the same network. Only the web server is visible to the world. Is NFS performance suitable for an expected low to moderately loaded server?

  • Google App Engine - low-level datastore API flag?

    In my GAE-Java app, I'm using the low-level datastore API. Hence I don't need the GAE app instance to load any of the higher level data access libraries such as JPA, JDO, Data Nucleus, etc. Is there a flag that I can set to indicate that I don't want these libraries to be loaded? My motivation to do this is to reduce app instance startup time everywhere I can. Now I don't know if these libraries are loaded only on-demand or always. The dev environment logs messages related to data nucleus which seems to indicate that some of these libraries may be pre-loaded? I hope I'm wrong here. Thanks, Keyur

  • Reasonable Location to Install Web Service on Server

    Firstly, I'm a software developer and not qualified as any kind of system or server expert so I'm looking for advice in order to help me prevent faults on our server. I've written a modular system to carry out certain tasks for us autonomously to prevent us from writing the same old code over and over again. This consists of a Windows Service (.NET), a Web Service (WCF), a shared Class Library, and a Database which will run on a Windows Server 2003. The problem comes, for me, in deployment. Specifically the web service - naturally the local service (and required shared library) are persisted (by default and convention) in the Program Files folder, but storing the web service here just seems absurd to me (even though we'd lock it down to appropriate use only). Should the files be stored some place else all together? Or split them up and store the web service elsewhere?

    Hi I'm somewhat of a newbie to python and I'm using app engine and aptanna studio - I need to run some python shell commands so that i can complete the tasks in this Tutorial on how to set up 118 and django. I have got this all working but i don't understand how i run the python commands to compile the dictionarys such as $ PYTHONPATH=/path/to/googleappengine/python/lib/django/ /path/to/googleappengine/python/lib/django/django/bin/make-messages.py -a To be honest - why am i saying that! I dont know where in aptanna studio i run this command -then worse I don't quite understand what exactly i type based on the above command line. My path to google app engine is D:\Program Files\Google\google_appengine\ Can anyone help shed some light on how i do this from aptanna / the root of my project??     I have a relatively extensive sqlite database that I'd like to import into my Google App Engine python app. I've created my models using the appengine API which are close, but not quite identical to the existing schema. I've written an import script to load the data from sqlite and create/save new appengine objects, but the appengine environment blocks me from accessing the sqlite library. This script is only to be run on my local app engine instance, and from there I hope to push the data to google. Am I approaching this problem the wrong way, or is there a way to import the sqlite library while running in the local instance's environment?

  • using crypto++ on iphone sdk with pycrypto on app engine

    Hi, I'm trying to encrypt http requests using crypto++ and decrypt them with pycrypto on the app engine server end. Using Arc4 encryption, I can successfully encrypt and decrypt on the iphone end but when I try decrypting on app engine, the result is garbled. I thought maybe it has something to do with the encoding of the NSString but am not certain. It's not clear to me if I need to call encode() on the cipher on the server end before decrypting, although that does seem to resolve a failure to decrypt involving ascii values.     from what i can gather the mailbox bit of the web interface works fine.. when any of the users go to options (top right) and try to use some of the features such as the Organise Mail Delivery Reports to find messages etc... it comes up with a message .. However, I'm missing some key features in the "Server Farm" panel in IIS. This is how my setup looks like However, just like in the tutorial, I want it like this How can I enable ALL the things, like Load Balancer, Health Test, Server Affinity etc? Thanks.   • What Web design tool would make a good CityDesk replacement?

    I am looking for a tool for building static template-based web sites, your typical brochure-ware for a non-profit or a personal site. I have used CityDesk, but that is out-of-date, unsupported, and has certain problems. Of course there are lots of tools out there, but I cannot find anything similar to CityDesk: WYSIWYG as well as HTML coding a templating system not overdesigned like, say, Dreamweaver built for developers who understand HTML/JS/CSS but easier to use than hand-coding of PHP, Ruby, or other templates in a text editor supporting the editing of pages by non-developers preferably free I'd also like it to be CSS-aware; and to have lots of free templates available. Or alternatively, static template-based sites are often developed nowadays on the Web using a CMS like Django; is that the way to go? Edit: Namo, DreamWeaver, NetObjects Fusion, Coffee Cup, Evrsoft First Page, and Microsoft Expression might be candidates. I'll appreciate comments on these based on the criteria above.

    I need to store a undirected graph in a Google App Engine database. For optimization purposes, I am thinking to use database indexes. Using Google App Engine, is there any way to define the columns of a database table to create its index? I will need some optimization, since my app uses this stored undirected graph on a content-based filtering for item recommendation. Also, the recommender algorithm updates the weights of some graph's edges. If it is not possible to use database indexes, please suggest another method to reduce query time for the graph table. I believe my algorithm does more data retrieval operations from graph table than write operations. PS: I am using Python.

  • Storing database settings outside app.config

    I've been writing a c# exe that will be running on a live web server, but I want to be able to test it on our staging server. Since the staging server has different database settings (in the app.config) from my localhost, is there any way I can store the connection string outside the app.config so that I can easily get to it? Also, is it possible to store the database connection string, then access it via the app.config? This might sound odd, but I'm using a dll from a CMS that uses the value in the .config file.

  • Wrap app with dynamic libraries into one large static app

    I have an old program that kind of depends on older dynamic libraries. They tend to get upgraded easily with distro's updates. I figured that there would be a script with using ldd that would gather the libs needed and create one bigger, statically linked application that wouldn't break so easily. If I could do this, alot of older KDE libraries could be removed from my system and easen my life. Thanks!
