• Are C++ Templates just Macros in disguise?

  I've been programming in C++ for a few years, and I've used STL quite a bit and have created my own template classes a few times to see how it's done. Now I'm trying to integrate templates deeper into my OO design, and a nagging thought keeps coming back to me: They're just a macros, really... You could implement (rather UGLY) auto_ptrs using #defines, if you really wanted to. This way of thinking about templates helps me understand how my code will actually work, but I feel that I must be missing the point somehow. Macros are meant evil incarnate, yet "template metaprogramming" is all the rage. So, what ARE the real distinctions? and how can templates avoid the dangers that #define leads you into, like Inscrutable compiler errors in places where you don't expect them? Code bloat? Difficulty in tracing code? Setting Debugger Breakpoints?

• How to call operator<< on "this" in a descendant of std::stringstream?

  class mystream : public std::stringstream { public: void write_something() { this << "something"; } }; This results in the following two compile errors on VC++10: error C2297: '<<' : illegal, right operand has type 'const char [10]' error C2296: '<<' : illegal, left operand has type 'mystream *const ' Judging from the second one, this is because what this points at can't be changed, but the << operator does (or at least is declared as if it does). Correct? Is there some other way I can still use the << and >> operators on this?

• Error handling with Python + Pylons

  What is the proper way to handle errors with Python + Pylons? Say a user sets a password via a form that, when passed to a model class via the controller, throws an error because it's too short. How should that error be handled so that an error message gets displayed on the web page rather than the entire script terminating to an error page? Should there be any error handling in the controller itself? I hope I am explaining myself clearly. Thank you.

• Rails: Generic form actions, cancel link losing `:back` on validation failure

  I am trying to create a generic set of Submit, Cancel, and Destroy actions for forms. At this point, it appears that everything is working, except that I lose :back functionality then a form reloads due to validation errors. • Most reliable method for uploading files in PHP w/ progress bar

  Hello everyone, I am interested in finding the most reliable method for uploading files in PHP. I need a progress bar with the upload. I have tried SWFUpload but it randomly issues an I/O Error. Even if the same file is uploaded sometimes there is an error and sometimes there is not. I have configured all the necessary INI/Mysql/Apache directives to accept large file uploads. So, I am looking for alternatives as a Flash based solution has not worked. Would Java be more relirable? I have also looked into PHP with APC. I definitely cannot afford these random errors, so any help on reliable software / suggestions on how to minimize them would be appreciated. Thank you.

• Visual Studio 2010 deploys views too late in deploy process

  I have a database project in my VS2010 solution. I recently changed a view and and changed a number of functions to use this view instead of going directly against a table. But now when I deploy I get errors on most of these functions because the column asked for does not exists in the view yet. The update of the view happends later than the update of UDF's. Is there any way to change this behaviour? Wouldn't the best thing be if the deploy script updated in this order: tables, views, SP and UDF. It seems like tables is updated first, but the views are just thrown in somewhere in the middle of the deploy script.

  I'm trying to figure out why insertNewObjectForEntityForName is not working. I assume it's something to do with my data model but can't be sure. Xcode does not report any errors nor does it crash. All I get is the first log statement output to the console. • Why doesn't my ClickOnce deployment pick up the latest changes to the application?

  I have a WinForms app which is deployed to a local network drive (as 'Online Only') via ClickOnce. This has been working fine but today I made some changes to the application and attempted to ClickOnce deploy it to a separate network location (to use as a test system) rather than the current production location. ClickOnce publishes successfully, with no errors, to the correct location but only publishes the pre-change version; i.e. none of my changes are visible: the version number is the old version number and the displayed release date is the last production release back in 2009. What do I have to do to get this to publish correctly? I've used a similar approach on other applications with no such issues.

  I am developing a C++ application on Ubuntu. The application consists of several modules, each with its makefile. I want to have a customised command line build process that does the following: checks code out from a repository (for specified branch/tag) builds the app (release or debug as specified) logs any errors etc I am too lazy to learn Perl (I tried before, but cant seem to get my head around it). Are there any (preferably open source) tools anyone can suggest, or maybe a simpler scripting languuage - or do I really have to learn Perl?

• Maintaining Logging and/or stdout/stderr in Python Daemon

  Every recipe that I've found for creating a daemon process in Python involves forking twice (for Unix) and then closing all open file descriptors. (See http://www.jejik.com/articles/2007/02/a_simple_unix_linux_daemon_in_python/ for an example). This is all simple enough but I seem to have an issue. On the production machine that I am setting up, my daemon is aborting - silently since all open file descriptors were closed. I am having a tricky time debugging the issue currently and am wondering what the proper way to catch and log these errors are. What is the right way to setup logging such that it continues to work after daemonizing? Do I just call logging.basicConfig() a second time after daemonizing? What's the right way to capture stdout and stderr? I am fuzzy on the details of why all the files are closed. Ideally, my main code could just call daemon_start(pid_file) and logging would continue to work.

• Linking error in OMNeT++ using Boost serialization library

  I'm very new to OMNeT++ and I'd like to use the serialization-library contained in the boost framework. However, when trying to use it, I get quite many errors such as: Description Resource Path Location Type undefined reference to `boost::archive::archive_exception::~archive_exception()' OmCCN line 36, external location: /home/alexander/UniBE/BT/simulator/boost-compiledLibs /include/boost/serialization/throw_exception.hpp C/C++ Problem . I guess the problem is that I didn't yet link the compiled library in OMNeT. I've had a look at the makefile but any changes there are worthless since it is generated automatically by makemake. Furthermore, trying to access the menu item 'makemake' in project properties OMNeT++ IDE throws an error (The currently displayed page contains invalid values). Can anyone give me a hint concerning what the error could cause or how to link the compiled library correctly? Any hints are very appreciated! cheers alex

  I need to improve the response time for a Grails application, so I need to use concurrent processing to separate work that can be done after the users web page is refreshed It seems like the Camel and background-thread plugins can do this for me. I tried the Camel way, but get 'Session does not exists' errors, which looks like hibernate can not operate in an Camel acynchonouse call. In the background-thread description they mention that they solved this problem. Can any one tell me which which will be the better choice and which ones plays nicely with Hibernate? • Can you make VB.NET compilation as strict as C#?

  In VB.NET, it is entirely possible to pass an integer as a string parameter to a method without calling .ToString() - it's even possible to call .ToString without the ()'s. The code will run without a problem, VB will interpret the integer as a string without having been told to. In C#, these would cause compilation errors - you are required to call .ToString() and to call it correctly in that situation before it will compile. Is there a way to make the VB compilation process check for the same things as the C# compilation process? Would it be best practice in a mixed team to force this check?

  hi i have posted one of my app in market.android.com when i am trying to post second app it shows "You have another application on Market with the same package name. Go to that other application, and click upgrade" I dont want to upgrade it but i want my second app to be posted.   The following simple program snippet gives compilation errorswith gcc-4.3.4. Program: int main() { char *ptr = new char[10]; char *ptr1 = new char[]; return 0; } Compilation errors: prog.cpp: In function ‘int main()’: prog.cpp:4: error: expected primary-expression before ‘]’ token prog.cpp:3: warning: unused variable ‘ptr’ prog.cpp:4: warning: unused variable ‘ptr1’ But the same compiles cleanly with MSVC without any diagnostic message. So my question is: Does the Standard allow an new [] to be called without specifying the size? Or this a bug in MSVC? Can someone provide a reference from the standard which will conclusively say that the above code example is ill-formed or well-formed? I have had a look at: 5.3.4 New [expr.new] & 18.4.1.2 Array forms [lib.new.delete.array] but couldnt find any conclusive evidence about the behavior.

• Is there any difference between SQL running in code vs the MySQL command line?

  I have a SQL update statement I am running from inside a PHP program. It is prepared and then executed. When I run it in PHP, it reports a constraint violation. When I run the exact same statement from the command line (which I am getting via dBug()), it works with no errors. This sounds impossible, so I keep looking for differences between the statements. The only thing I can see is that when I execute it with an array of arguments, they all appear to be chars, when some should be integers. Any suggestions for where to look? I can post the code, but that does not seem like it would be helpful, because the code works.

  Hi, I have a "super" makefile which launches two "sub" make file: libwebcam: @echo -e "\nInvoking libwebcam make." $(MAKE) -C $(TOPDIR)/libwebcam uvcdynctrl: @echo -e "\nInvoking uvcdynctrl make." $(MAKE) -C $(TOPDIR)/uvcdynctrl uvcdynctrl uses libwebcam... I noticed that those two builds are launched as separate threads by make ! Thus sometimes the lib is not available when uvcdynctrl starts being built, and I get errors. By default, make should not launch commands as threads since this is available only through -j (number of jobs) and, according to the make manual, there is no thread by default. I run this on an Ubuntu. Did someone face the same issue ? Apple92

• tmux: create session if none exists

  I'm switching from using gnu-screen to tmux, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around changes. One thing I'd like to be able to do is start tmux and have it automatically connect to a session if one exists, and otherwise create a new session. tmux attach attaches to an automatically existing session - but errors out if no session exists tmux new creates a new session - but it does so every time, so I can't leave it in my .tmux.conf tmux has-session tests whether a session exists - but I don't know how to stitch it together with the other commands Can anyone give me some configure file advice?

• Javascript - Function call will not enter function body

  I have a function acting as a constructor that, when called, gets as far as the function definition in the debugger, but never to the function body. Is there a common reason this may happen that I am overlooking?
