  I need to retrieve all records ordered alphabetically. Except for a predefined list of record's columns which their records should appear first in a given predefined order, then all other records should be sorted alphabetically based on the same column For instance, assume we have the following table which is called Names Lets assume the predefined list is ("Mathew", "Ashraf", "Jack"). I.e. these are the names of whom their records should be listed first as in the predefined order. So the desired query result should be: Which query could retrieve this custom order ? P.S, I'm using MySQL. Here's my trial based on comments' request: (SELECT * FROM Names WHERE Name in ('Mathew', 'Ashraf', 'Jack')) UNION (SELECT * FROM Names WHERE Name NOT IN ('Mathew', 'Ashraf', 'Jack') ORDER BY Name ASC); the first query result wasn't ordered as required.

• What's wrong with my markdown syntax? Broken in stackoverflow and bluecloth...

  I just wrote some markdown and it doesn't seem to render correctly. Is it legal syntax to have an ordered list, followed by newlines, then followed by an unordered list? Or is this a bug in bluecloth? For example: 1. One 2. Two 3. Three * Apple * Banana * Carrot Bluecloth creates a single <ul> and nests apple, banana and carrot as <li>'s under it. Stackoverflow's post editor (wmd?) does this too. Am I just doing it wrong? Surely this is a common usage case...

• ghc can't find my cabal installed packages

  I've installed ghc 6.12.3, and then the Haskell Platform. I'm trying to compile a test program: $ ghc test.hs test.hs:3:0: Failed to load interface for `Bindings': Use -v to see a list of the files searched for. so, naturally, I do cabal install Bindings Which works fine, and places the package in ~/.cabal/lib/bindings-0.1.2 The problem is, that when I go to compile again with ghc, it still doesn't find the package I've installed with cabal. compiling in verbose mode gives: ghc -v test.hs Using binary package database: /home/ludflu/ghc/lib/ghc-6.12.3/package.conf.d/package.cache Using binary package database: /home/ludflu/.ghc/x86_64-linux 6.12.3/package.conf.d/package.cache As suggested by another stackoverflow user, I tried: ghc-pkg describe rts > rts.pkg vi rts.pkg # add the /home/ludflu/.cabal/lib to `library-dirs` field ghc-pkg update rts.pkg But to no avail. How to I add the .cabal to the list of package directories to search? Thank you!

  I'm building an android application, which has a list view, and in the list view, a click listener, containing an onItemClick method. So I have something like this: public class myList extends ListActivity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { getListView().setOnItemClickListener(new OnItemClickListener() { public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int position, long id) { /* Do something*/ } } } Normally, this works fine. However, many times I find myself needing too preform an application using the outer class as a context. thusfar, I've used: parent.getContext(); to do this, but I would like to know, is that a bad idea? I can't really call: super because it's not really a subclass, just an embedded one. So is there any better way, or is that considered cosure? Also, if it is the right way, what should I do if the embedded method doesn't have a parameter to get the outside class? Thank you.

• ListViewGroup not sorting correctly

  I'm using a ListView control in a C# WinForms application. Items in the list are added to a ListViewGroup (in this case, grouping by country). The one thing that isn't working as expected is that the column sorting appears to be strange. I've hooked into the ListViewItemSorter property of the ListView and everything sorts perfectly except when the country column is sorted in descending order (that is, Z-A). Regardless of how the list sort occurs the groups show in ascending order. Can anyone give me a nudge in the right direction? EDIT: FWIW, .NET 3.5 on Vista.

What's the fastest way to find out if a given localNode is a producer for another localnode in the data structure (and not within the same list)? For example, I would like to know that nA (node-17) produces for nC (exists on node-16). But I don't need to know that nB produces for nC, since they exist in the same localNodes list.

• JAVA: 500 Worker Threads, what kind of thread pool?

  I am wondering if this is the best way to do this. I have about 500 threads that run indefinitely, but Thread.sleep for a minute when done one cycle of processing. ExecutorService es = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(list.size()+1); for (int i = 0; i < list.size(); i++) { es.execute(coreAppVector.elementAt(i)); //coreAppVector is a vector of extends thread objects } I do need a separate threads for each running task, so changing the architecture isn't an option. I tried making my threadPool size equal to Runtime.getRuntime().availableProcessors() which attempted to run all 500 threads, but only let 8 (4xhyperthreading) of them execute. The other threads wouldn't surrender and let other threads have their turn. I tried putting in a wait() and notify(), but still no luck. If anyone has a simple example or some tips, I would be grateful!

• Rails "Missing these required gems" error for installed gems

  I know this has been asked multiple times before, but I've tried those things and still am not having any luck. For the mechanize gem, I keep getting the "Missing these required gems" error when I run db:migrate on my production server. Here's the full error: Missing these required gems: mechanize You're running: ruby 1.8.6.111 at /usr/bin/ruby1.8 rubygems 1.3.5 at /home/user/.gem/ruby/1.8, /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8 Output of which ruby is /usr/bin/ruby Output of which gem is /usr/bin/gem When I run gem list mechanize (1.0.0) is definitely in the list. What am I doing wrong here?

Yet it's working perfectly, but I have the feeling than in calling the _eval (fun y->y) bit, there must be something wrong happening, since it doesn't seem that this call can replace the previous one in the stack structure... Am I misunderstanding something here? I mean, I understand that with only the first call to _eval there wouldn't be any problem optimizing the calls, but here it seems to me that evaluation the _eval (fun y->y) will require to be stacked up, and therefore will fill the stack, possibly leading to an overflow...   Hello, I have a list of Project objects, that I display in a GTK TreeView. I am trying to open a dialog with a Project's details when the user double-clicks on the item's row in the TreeView. Right now I get the selected value from the TreeView (which is the name of the Project) via get_selection(), and search for that Project by name in my own list to corelate the selection with my own model. However, this doesn't feel quite right (plus, it assumes that a Project's name is unique), and I was wondering if there is a more elegant way of doing it.

• Passing an empty IEnumerable argument to a method

  I have this method (simplified): void DoSomething(IEnumerable<int> numbers); And I invoke it like this: DoSomething(condition==true?results:new List<int>()); The variable results is formed with a LINQ select condition (IEnumerable). I was wondering is this List<int>() the best way (the fastest?) to pass an empty collection, or is new int[0] better? Or, something else would be faster, a Collection, etc.? In my example null wouldn't be ok.

• Question about when and when not to raise events (C#)

  I am programming an instant messaging library for MSN Messenger, and I have a simple question about raising events. When logging in, should I be raising UserAdded for each user that is synchronized (already on the contact list), or should the UserAdded event be reserved for when a new user has been added to the contact list via the AddUser method? Should I perhaps use another event, UserDownloaded for when a user is downloaded? Similarly, when I call logout, should I call UserRemoved? I hope this makes sense. Thank you

• UINavigationController crashes after pushing 3 views onto stack

  I have a navigation controller, which has the following structure: Category Item Item Detail I can choose a category, and then choose an item to see its details. I can do this twice, i.e. go Back to the list of items and select another item. If i try this a third time, the app crashes, I get objc_msgSend in stack but thats all. But, instead of choosing another item, i go to the list of categories, and choose a different category, I can select two items in that category, before it crashes also. What would be causing this? I am currently doing a project that applies personalisation and customisation and wanted to implement something similar. My prototype is based on an institution, so I want to display a list of, say, the last 5 viewed programmes or courses on the home page. I am using PHP and so far i have thought of using $_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"], but this returns only the last URL, which is not what I want. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me with this? • MySQL date query only returns one year, when multiple exist

  I'm a part-time designer/developer with a part-time photography business. I've got a database of photos with various bits of metadata attached. I want to query the database and return a list of the years that photos were taken, and the quantity of photos that were taken in that year. In short, I want a list that looks like this: 2010 (35 photos) 2009 (67 photos) 2008 (48 photos) Here's the query I'm using: SELECT YEAR(date) AS year, COUNT(filename) as quantity FROM photos WHERE visible='1' GROUP BY 'year' ORDER BY 'year' DESC Instead of churning out all the possible years (the database includes photos from 2010-2008), this is the sole result: 2010 (35 photos) I've tried a lot of different syntax but at this point I'm giving in and asking for help!

  My question here is similar to the question here, except that I am working with C#. I have two colors, and I have a predefine steps. How to retrieve a list of Colors that are the gradients between the two? • Scalable Database Tagging Schema

  EDIT: To people building tagging systems. Don't read this. It is not what you are looking for. I asked this when I wasn't aware that RDBMS all have their own optimization methods, just use a simple many to many scheme. I have a posting system that has millions of posts. Each post can have an infinite number of tags associated with it. Users can create tags which have notes, date created, owner, etc. A tag is almost like a post itself, because people can post notes about the tag. Each tag association has an owner and date, so we can see who added the tag and when. My question is how can I implement this? It has to be fast searching posts by tag, or tags by post. Also, users can add tags to posts by typing the name into a field, kind of like the google search bar, it has to fill in the rest of the tag name for you. I have 3 solutions at the moment, but not sure which is the best, or if there is a better way. Note that I'm not showing the layout of notes since it will be trivial once I get a proper solution for tags. Method 1. Linked list tagId in post points to a linked list in tag_assoc, the application must traverse the list until flink=0 post: id, content, ownerId, date, tagId, notesId tag_assoc: id, tagId, ownerId, flink tag: id, name, notesId Method 2. Denormalization tags is simply a VARCHAR or TEXT field containing a tab delimited array of tagId:ownerId. It cannot be a fixed size. post: id, content, ownerId, date, tags, notesId tag: id, name, notesId Method 3. Toxi (from: http://www.pui.ch/phred/archives/2005/04/tags-database-schemas.html, also same thing here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20856/how-do-you-recommend-implementing-tags-or-tagging) post: id, content, ownerId, date, notesId tag_assoc: ownerId, tagId, postId tag: id, name, notesId Method 3 raises the question, how fast will it be to iterate through every single row in tag_assoc? Methods 1 and 2 should be fast for returning tags by post, but for posts by tag, another lookup table must be made. Some rules for entries: There must be a link to the project/product You must state whether it's open source or commercial Is it possible to extend the editor (add new features like a "violet centered sudoku")? Is that simple or complex? Does it come with lots of features (fancy character and paragraph styles with online spell checking for several languages in the same document) or just the basics (bold, italics, no underline)? List important dependencies (does it run on bare Java with Swing? SWT? MacOS?) Your personal opinion This list should help developers determine which editor to choose. I'm not looking for "the best" but more "what's there".

But as C# and WPF allow some pretty cool automation with Binding I would like to add a binding that returns the following: Give me all articles that are of Type 1 and compatible to my selected article (id=1). The simple part of it works well (articles has a list of all articles): private ObservableCollection<Article> _articles = new ObservableCollection<Article>(); [fill it with the available articles] and then: comboBoxArticles.ItemsSource = _articles.AsBindable().Where( c => c.Typ == 0 ); How can I extend the Where clause to query another table?
