• java runtime 6 with socks v5 proxy - Possible?

  I have written an application that (amongst other things) runs a local service in windows that acts as a SOCKS v5 proxy for Firefox. I'm in the debugging phase right now and have found certain websites that don't work correctly. For example the Java Applet for Picture Uploading on Facebook.com fails because is is unable to lookup domains. My app overrides a hidden FF config setting network.proxy.socks__remote__dns setting it to true. The whole purpose of the app is to allow access to websites when behind a firewall (e.g. if the user is in China), so this setting is essential to ensure domains are resolved remotely also (and not just HTTP requests). In the JRE6 settings (documented here) there isn't an equivalent setting, and since remote DNS resolution is a feature of SOCKS v5 and not v4 as the documentation seems to imply I'm worried that it's just not possible. How can I programmatically make sure the JRE uses a SOCKS v5 proxy for all requests (including DNS)? UPDATE: Steps to reproduce this problem: Make sure you are behind a firewall that blocks (or redirects) internet access including DNS Install PuTTY and add a dynamic SSH tunnel on some port number of your choice (e.g. 9870). Then login to a remote server that has full access to the internet Launch Firefox and you will not be able to browse the web In FF network settings set the SOCKS v5 proxy to localhost:9870 In FF go to about:config, change network.proxy.socks__remote__dns to true You will now be able to browse the web. Go to facebook.com, login, go to your profile and attempt to use the picture uploader java applet to add some pictures It will fail with a series of class not found errors looking similar to: load: class com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class not found. I believe this is failing because the JRE is unable to resolve the domain that the class resides on. I'm basing this belief on the fact that the documentation (http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html) talks only about SOCKS v4 (which as far as I know does not support remote DNS). My deployment.properties file is located in %APPDATA%\Sun\Java\Deployment. I can confirm that modifications I make in the Java Control Panel get written into that file. If instead of "Use browser setting" the network settings for Java I override and attempt to use the SOCKS proxy settings manually, I still have the issue. There does not seem to be an easy way to force the JRE to do DNS remotely through the Proxy. UPDATE 2: Without the SOCKS proxy, from my local client www.facebook.com resolves to 203.161.230.171 upload.facebook.com resolves to 64.33.88.161 Neither host is reachable (because of the firewall) If I login to the remote server, I get: www.facebook.com 69.63.187.17 upload.facebook.com 69.63.178.32 Both these IPs change after a few minutes, as it seems Facebook uses round-robin DNS and other load-balancing. With the Proxy settings set in Firefox, I can navigate to www.facebook.com without any difficulty (since DNS is being resolved remotely on the Proxy). Whey I go to the page with the Java applet it fails with the stacktrace messages I've already reported. However if I edit Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, adding the correct IP for upload.facebook.com I can get the applet to load and work correctly (restart of FF is sometimes necessary). This evidence seems to support my theory that the Java Runtime is not resolving DNS on the Proxy, but instead just routing traffic though it. My application is for mass-deployment, and needs to work with java applets on other sites (not just facebook). I really need a work-around for this problem. • UAC-account-users can't see their mounted network-drives

  I wrote a few login batches in the Group Policy Management which mount specified devices to specified usergroups. The batches work as they should as long UAC is disabled. My problem is that the UAC-account-users can't see their mounted network-drives because the login scripts run in elevated context. I tried to fix the problem with PsExec (-l) so that the network-folders are mapped with limited user rigths. But it seems that this won't work. (PsExec is already installed on all computers so it can work local.) Has anyone an idea how to fix that problem? I spended a long time in trying to fix the problem but I did not find any solutions about THIS problem.

  I've modified my .htaccess file to have the following statement RewriteCond $1 !^index.php$ RewriteRule ^/?([^/]+)$ index.php?c=home&m=details&seo=$1 [L,NS] This allows me to use product URL's like this: http://domain.com/product_name However, when trying to access a file at the same level as index.php, it always calls the RewriteRule above and errors out. I need to be able to access files like below, but each URL currently attempts to load index.php. http://domain.com/about.htm http://domain.com/terms.htm http://domain.com/robots.txt etc Any suggestions on how I can modify my htaccess file to get this to work correctly?

  i have a DetailsView that is populated by a Linq to Entities query. Example query is below. Dim Record = From L In db.MyRecords _ Where L.RecordID = 100 _ Select ID = L.RecordID, L.column1, L.column2, L.column3, L.column4 DetailsView2.DataSource = Record DetailsView2.DataBind() The defaultMode for the DetailsView is Edit. Now if this Detailsview was bound to a datasource control, i would convert a column to a templateColumn and programatically access cell values like so Dim NameTextBox As System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox = CType(DetailsView2.Rows(1).Cells(1).FindControl("TextBox1"), System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox) such that i can then say NameTextBox.Text to get the Name value. But the problem i have is, with this detailsview which is unbound, i have no column at design time to convert to a template, and yet i want to access its cell values. help is appreciated.

If i create the repository on the root of the svn folder i can see the repository (http://domain.com/code/t1) when i try the other urls i get the error Could not open the requested SVN filesystem My question is, It is possible to do a search in all subfolders looking for svn repositories?

• using flock in bash, why does killing a child process kill the parent process too?

  In the code snippet below, I want the script to be limited to only running one copy at a time, and for it to restart server.x if it dies for any reason. Without flock involved, the loop correctly restarts if I kill the server process, but once I use flock to ensure the script is only running once, if I kill server.x it also kills the parent process.   Hi: I'm having a problem using the UITabBarController and can't seem to get anywhere... maybe someone has run into something similar. I have the typical Tab Bar + Navigation app and everything is working great, except when I access options in the More tab.   Is it possible to access the DisplayNameAttributes that are used on my ViewData.Model so I can Localize them before sending them to the view? • Apache2 - setting PERL5LIB via SetEnv under CGI

  Hi, my setup is as follows: I have one Apache2 webserver running different vhosts, one vhost is for the production website, the other vhost is for a staging / preview system. Both vhosts have different DocumentRoots and also different (Perl) CGI folders. The used modules for each of these vhosts should be in different directories, so I did the following: <VirtualHost...> ServerName production SetEnv PERL5LIB /home/production/modules </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost...> ServerName staging SetEnv PERL5LIB /home/staging/modules </VirtualHost> However, I just noticed that in my Perl CGI scripts, both paths get filled into my @INC, so I can not separate the staging modules from the production modules, e.g. the SetEnv directive is not limited to a single virtual host, but seems to work globally. • Lots of 408 Request Timed Out from same IPs

  Web server: Nginx. Checking our log files, there are many log entries of connections that: take 59-61 seconds send an empty request (or at least none is logged) result in a 408 response (request timed out) do not contain any http_user_agent originate from a limited number of IPs We are monitoring average times to serve responses and this obviously inflates our statistics. Apart from that though, is this a problem? Any idea why it is occurring? Does it suggest that somebody is intentionally messing with us? What should we do?

• www a-record vs cname-record

  Hi! I have a website that I will be hosting DNS for (testing purposes at first and then it will have some limited traffic). I have set up DNS so that site.tld has an A record to the actual IP but I don't know what to do about www.site.tld. Both site.tld and www.site.tld will point to the same server / application so my logic tells me to add a cname record so that www.site.tld becomes an alias for site.tld, BUT, I've been checking my settings with intodns.com and if I only add a CNAME for the www.site.tld it gives me the following error: ERROR: I could not get any A records for www.cexa.ro! (the error clears once I do an A record for www.site.tld to point to the actual IP) I don't know if there is a "rule" that "www." should always be an A record even though it's actually pointing to the same IP / application.   I am sending UTF-8, japanese text, to my server. It works in Firefox. My access.log and headers are: /ajax/?q=%E6%BC%A2%E5%AD%97 Accept-Charset ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 Content-Type application/x-www-form-urlencoded; charset=UTF-8 Howeer, in IE8, my access.log says: /ajax/?q=?? For some reason, IE8 is turning my AJAX call into question marks. Why!? I added the scriptCharset and ContentType according to some tutorials, but still no luck. • Disable a Section of the Mousepad?

  I purchased a hp envy 4 ultrabook. Its great but I'm infuriated at the touchpad. The click buttons and the touch pad are combined together but the click button area is touch sensitive. I usually rest my thumb on the right click but the mouse cursor goes completely crazy on this machine. Is there any way to disable a section of the touchpad? Basically make the click button area have nothing to do with the pointer function. I did see this post: Disable touch pad for mouse button region on new HP pavillion models? but the solution presented in that only limited the area from which the touchpad can begin. Since I rest my thumb on the click buttons, I would like to completely disable the click button area of the touchpad. Thank you.

  Hello, I try to expose a database via ADO RIA for which we have only an ODBC based interface. The "database" is a server and new elements are developped all the time, so I would like the server to check metadata at start (using the odbc schema methods) and then expose what he finds via RIA services.... clients can the nregenerate when they need access to new elements. As such, I dont ahve any CLR types for all the tabled developped. ResourceType tableType = new ResourceType( typeof(object), ResourceTypeKind.EntityType, null, "Martini", table_name, false ); tableType.CanReflectOnInstanceType = false; I can somehow not put in NULl as CLR element type, and entering typeof(object) seems to result in reflection errors when trying to access the properties. Any documentation on how to do that? I dont really want to get into having types... though if I have to, I probably will dynamically generate some via bytecode emit.

  Hi, I've set up a project with an SDF local database file and am trying to access it using an LINQ To SQL (".dbml") file. I have used the connection string provided by the sdf file and can instanciate the object with out a problem: thisDataContext = new MyDataContext(GetConnectionString()); However, whenever i try to access any information from it eg var collection = (from MyObject p in thisDataContext.MyTable select p); I get the error - "The table name is not valid. [ Token line number (if known) = 2,Token line offset (if known) = 14,Table name = Person ]" I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 .Net 3.5 and SQL 2008 CE. I gather something similar happened for SQL 2005 CE and a Hotfix was released, but i would have thought the fix would have been fixed in this version before release. Does anyone know the fix for this? Thanks

  I have a website running ASP.NET (C#) on server A. I need my website to access a webservice on server B. server B will only accept incoming requests if the requestee is located within a certain IP range and server A is not within this range. I have a server server C which is located within the IP range and the only thing blocking server A from server C is a firewall (which I have access to). It must be possible to create a hole in the firewall between server A and server C, but my question is: How do I relay the request from server A to server B via server C?   All the security stuff I have worked with in the past in ASP.Net for the most part has been role based. This is easy enough to implement and ASP.Net is geared for this type of security model. However, I am looking for something a little more fine grained than simple role based security. Essentially I want to be able to write code like this: if(SecurityService.CanPerformOperation("SomeUpdateOperation")){ // perform some update logic here } I would also need row level security access like this: if(SecurityService.CanPerformOperation("SomeViewOperation", SomeEntityIdentifier)){ // Allow user to see specific data } Again, fine grained access control. Is there anything like this already built? Some framework that I can drop into ASP.Net and start using, or am I going to have to build this myself?

  I am working on a new project and hoping to use LINQ to SQL for the data access but have come across the following issue. I need to have my application access 3 databases with similar but not the same table structure, for example Database1 and Database 2 has a table called tblCustomer with 2 columns CustomerKey and CustomerName Database2 has a table called tblCustomer with 3 columns CustomerKey, CustomerName and CustomerPostCode I am looking for a solution that will allow me a query all three databases without the need for 3 GetCustomerList functions as Database1 and Database2 could use the same function as are the same structure, with an override function for database 3 to bring back the additional field. Is there a way i can declare a base datacontext class to handle Database 1 and 2 with an inherited version for Database 3. Thanks In Advance Stuart Ferguson

  This is mostly a data warehouse philosophy question. My project involves an Oracle forms application, and a Teradata Data Warehouse for reporting and ad-hoc purposes. In addition to the primary data created by the users of our application, we also require data from various other sources. Currently, this 3rd party data comes via FTPd flat files directly to our Data Warehouse. To access the data, our users must use a series of custom BusinessObjects reports. My question is, would it make more sense for this data to be sent to our source Oracle system instead? Is it ever appropriate for a Data Warehouse to be the point of origin for users to access raw data? In short, is it more important that the operational database contain only the data created by your project, or that the data warehouse remain dedicated solely to reporting and analysis?

• Speed Difference between native OLE DB and ADO.NET

  I'm looking for suggestions as well as any benchmarks or observations people have. We are looking to rewrite our data access layer and are trying to decide between native C++ OLEDB or ADO.NET for connecting with databases. Currently we are specifically targeting Oracle which would mean we would use the Oracle OLE DB provider and the ODP.NET. Requirements: 1. All applications will be in managed code so using native C++ OLEDB would require C++/CLI to work (no PInvoke way to slow). 2. Application must work with multiple databases in the future, currently just targeting Oracle specifically. Question: 1. Would it be more performant to use ADO.NET to accomplish this or use native C++ OLE DB wrapped in a Managed C++ interface for managed code to access? Any ideas, or help or places to look on the web would be greatly appreciated.

• Find which php scripts cause high CPU with php-cgi

  Background: I maintain a server for a client who has half a dozen Wordpress sites on. They all have the W3 Total Cache plugin installed and eAcellerator is installed (might be APC). All the PHP sites run through a single batch of fastcgi php-cgi processes (it's actually php-fpm but I'm not sure if that makes a difference). Problem: php-cgi's CPU usage is quite high. Not terminally high but high enough to raise an eyebrow. The client wants to add more sites in the future and I want to avoid becoming CPU limited if I can help it. Question: Is there any way I can find the scripts or even just requests that are causing the high CPU. I realise I might not be able to do anything with the results but it would give me a chance.
