• Other games that employ mechanics like the game "Diplomacy"

  I'm doing a little bit of research and I'm hoping you can help me track down any games, other than Diplomacy (online version here), that employ all or some of the mechanics in Diplomacy (rules, short form). Examples I'm looking for: Simultaneous orders given prior to execution of orders In Diplomacy, players "write down" their moves and execute them "at the same time" Support, in terms of supporting an attacker or defender "take" a territory. In Diplomacy, no one unit is stronger than another you need to combine the strength of multiple units to attack other territories. Rules for how move conflicts are resolved Example, 2 units move into a space, but only one is allowed, what happens. I may add to this list later, but these are the primary things I'm looking for. If you need clarification on anything just let me know. Note: I tried asking this on GamingSE, but it was shot down. So, I am unsure where else I could post this. Since I am researching this for game development purposes, I assume this post is on topic. Please let me know if this is not the case. Please also feel free to re-categorize this. Thanks!

  The portable libraries are the  response to the growing profile fragmentation in .NET frameworks. With help of portable libraries you can share code between different runtimes without dreadful #ifdef PLATFORM statements or even worse “Add as Link” source file sharing practices. If you have an existing .net class library which you would like to reference from a different runtime (e.g. you have a .NET Framework 4.5 library which you would like to reference from a Windows Store project), you can either create a new portable class library and move the classes there or edit the existing .csproj file and change the XML directly. The following example shows how to convert a .NET Framework 4.5 library to a Portable Class Library. • How add fog with pixel shader (HLSL) XNA?

  I started to make a small game in XNA . And recently i tried to add a "fog" on "pixel shader HLSL" with the class Effect from XNA . I search online about some tutorial and found many sample. But nothing want work on my game :-( . Before i already add a "fog" effect in my game and everything work, because i used the class "BasicEffect" but with the class "Effect" and HLSL, it's really more complicated. If somebody have an idea, it's will be wonderfull. Thanks again. • Which ecommerce framework is fast and easy to customize?

  I'm working on a project where I have to put online an ecommerce system which will require some good amount of custom features. I'm therefore looking for a framework which makes customization easy enough (from an experienced developer's perspective, I mean). Language shoul be PHP and time is a constraint, I don't have months to learn. Additionally, the ecommerce will have to handle around 200.000 products from day one, which will increase over time, hence performance is also important. So far I examined the following: Magento - Complicated and, as far as I could read, slow when database contains many products. It's also resource intensive, and we can't afford a dedicated VPS from the beginning. OpenCart - Rough at best, documentation is extremely poor. Also, it's "free" to start, but each feature is implemented via 3rd party commercial modules. OSCommerce - Buggy, inefficient, outdated. ZenCart - Derived from OSCommerce, doesn't seem much better. Prestashop - It looks like it has many incompatibilities. Also, most of its modules are commercial, which increases the cost. In short, I'm still quite undecided, as none of the above seems to satisfy the requirements. I'm open to evaluate closed source frameworks too, if they are any better, but my knowledge about them is limited, therefore I'll welcome any suggestion. Thanks for all replies.

• How to start a task before networking?

  I've written an upstart task that modifies /etc/network/interfaces. (Actually a file sourced into it.) Which start on condition do I need to declare to let my task run before any networking jobs? I've tried start on starting networking, but that's apparently too late. When I log in after booting I can see that the changes were written, but obviously they are not used: the new config states a static IP, but the boot process waits for a non-existing DHCP server (old config) to time out. I've also tried start on starting network-interface INTERFACE=eth0, which didn't work either. IIRC there was an error in the log that the change couldn't be written. Background: I need a VM template that can be cloned and the clones configured through a script. Among other settings, I need to give them a static IP address to access them from the host. I use guestfish to write a config file to one of the virtual disks and let a script apply these settings to the system. I don't want that disk to contain an actual system settings file. I can't modify /etc directly, because that disk is shared (copy-on-write/diff) among the clones and guestfish apparently doesn't support that type of image. I could also let them use DHCP and setup a server that assigns IP by MAC, but I'm afraid of the complexity. I could also add just another virtual disk for configuration files, but if possible I'd prefer to store settings directly on the system disk image. Used software: Ubuntu Server 12.04, VirtualBox. The configuration modifier is a self written ruby script.

• Architecting Python application consisting of many small scripts

  I am building an application which, at the moment, consists of many small Python scripts. Each Python script processes items from one Amazon SQS queue. Emails come into an initial queue and are processed by a script and typically the script will do a small unit of processing (for example, parse email and store some database fields), then an item will be placed on the next queue for further processing, until eventually the email has finished going through the various scripts and queues. What I like about this approach is that it is very loosely coupled. However, I'm not sure how I should implement live. Should I make each script a daemon which is constantly polling it's inbound queue for things to do? Or should there be some overarching orchestration program or process? Or maybe I should not have lots of small Python scripts but one large application? Specific questions: How should I run each of these scripts - as a daemon with some sort or restart monitor to restart them in case they stop for any reason? If yes, should I have some program which orchestrates this? Or is the idea of many small script not a good one, would it make more sense to have a larger python program which contains all the functionality and does all the queue polling and execution of functionality for each queue? What is the current preferred approach to daemonising Python scripts? Broadly I would welcome any comments or opinions on any aspect of this. thanks

• How much Ruby should I learn before moving to Rails?

  Just a quick question.. I can never get a definitive answer when googling this, either. Some people say you can learn Rails without knowing any Ruby, but at some point you'll run into a brick wall and wish you knew Ruby and will have to go back to learn it..and some say to learn the "basics" of Ruby before learning Rails and it will make your life that much easier.. My current knowledge is low. I'm not a beginner, but I'm not pro, either. I went through the Learn Python The Hard Way online book in about a month, but I stopped once I got to the OOP side of Python (I know booleans, elif/if/else/statements, for loops, while loops, functions) I agree with learning the "basics" of Ruby before learning Rails, but what exactly are the "basics" of Ruby? Would I need to learn the whole OOP side of Ruby before I went on to Rails? Or would I just need to learn the Ruby syntax up to where I learned Python (booleans, elif/if/else/statements, for loops, while loops, functions) before I went on to Rails? Thanks!

• SQL SERVER – Difference between COUNT(DISTINCT) vs COUNT(ALL)

  This blog post is written in response to the T-SQL Tuesday hosted by Jes Schultz Borland. Earlier today, I was presenting a 45-minute session at the Community College about “The Beginning SQL Server Database”. One of the students asked me the following question. What is the difference between COUNT(DISTINCT) vs COUNT(ALL)? I found this question from the student very interesting. He seems to have read the documentation (Book Online) and was then asking me this question. I always carry laptop which has SQL Server installed. I quickly opened it and ran the following script. After looking at the result, I think it was clear to everybody. Here is the script: SELECT COUNT([Title]) Value FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(ALL [Title]) ALLValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT [Title]) DistinctValue FROM [AdventureWorks].[Person].[Contact] GO The above script will give me the following results. You can clearly notice from the result set that COUNT (ALL ColumnName) is the same as COUNT(ColumnName). The reality is that the “ALL” is actually  the default option and it needs not to be specified. The ALL keyword includes all the non-NULL values. I know this is very simple and may be it does not change how we work; however looking at the whole angle, I really enjoyed the question.   The sys.dm_db_stats_properties Dynamic Management Function returns information about the statistics that are currently on your database objects. This function takes two parameters, an object_id and a stats_id. Let’s have a look at the result set from this function against the AdventureWorks2012.Sales.SalesOrderHeader table. To obtain the object_id and stats_id I will use a CROSS APPLY with the sys.stats system table. SELECT sp.* FROM sys.stats s CROSS APPLY sys.dm_db_stats_properties(s.object_id, s.Stats_id) sp WHERE sp.object_id = object_id('Sales.SalesOrderHeader') The first two columns returned by this function are the object_id and the stats_id columns. The next column, ‘last_updated’, gives you the date and the time that a particular statistic was last updated. The next column, ‘rows’, gives you the total number of rows in the table as of the last statistic update date. The ‘rows_sampled’ column gives you the number of rows that were sampled to create the statistic. The ‘steps’ column represents the number of specific value ranges from the statistic histogram. The ‘unfiltered_rows’ column represents the number of rows before any filters are applied. If a particular statistic is not filtered, the ‘unfiltered_rows’ column will always equal the ‘rows’ column. Lastly we have the ‘modification_counter’ column which represents the number of modification to the leading column in a given statistic since the last time the statistic was updated. Probably the most important column from this Dynamic Management Function is the ‘last_updated’ column. You want to always ensure that you have accurate and updated statistics on your database objects. Accurate statistics are vital for the query optimizer to generate efficient and reliable query execution plans. Without accurate and updated statistics, the performance of your SQL Server would likely suffer. The self-service website allow users to quickly and easily find and, where applicable, update their information in the Defense Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and milConnect transmits information to and from one reliable source safely and securely.  The Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) maintains the largest, most comprehensive central repository of personnel, manpower, casualty, pay, entitlement, personnel security, person identity and attributes, survey, testing, training, and financial data in the Department of Defense (DoD).  This is one of the largest systems of record in the world. milConnect had the challenge of modernizing the user experience for over 42 million users. With records in over 22 applications and 25 interfaces in hundreds of existing systems, milConnect needed to reduce the complexity of multiple authentication sources as well as consolidating access to existing systems with sensitive information. It accomplished this using a service-orientated architecture, enterprise security and access and identity management for self-service access on a massive scale.   Earlier I asked a simple question on Facebook regarding difference between DATABASEPROPERTY and DATABASEPROPERTYEX in SQL Server. You can view the original conversation there over here. Question Question from SQLAuthority.com: What is the difference between DATABASEPROPERTY and DATABASEPROPERTYEX in SQL Server? Answer Answer from Rakesh Kumar: DATABASEPROPERTY is supported for backward compatibility but does not provide information about the properties added in this release. Also, many properties supported by DATABASEPROPERTY have been replaced by new properties in DATABASEPROPERTYEX.- source (MSDN). Answer from Alphonso Jones: The only real difference I can see is one, the number of properties contained and the other is that EX returns a sql_variant while DATABASEPROPERTY returns only int. We'll even throw in a contest or two to make sure you are paying attention. We'll post a couple of times a week, and then more frequently as we get closer to September. There's a group of us, and we cover the Java beat, JUGs, Oracle Technology Network, Oracle Solaris, and lots more. What do you want to hear about? Let us know.A group of us from the office went to see the movie Iron Man 2 (it just debuted in the United States) last week and it reminded us of Java, the Java community, and JavaOne. In all three cases, from many disparate (and sometimes seemingly incompatible) parts and people, something comes together that works, is cool, and helps make a better world. Right now, there are hundreds of little islands of planning, all busy answering questions for JavaOne: What sessions get selected? What goes in the Mason street tent (until a few weeks ago, Will there be a tent on Mason street?), What do the JUGS need? Which Oracle ACEs will be there? Can we do a surf theme at the OTN party? And, somehow, like an Iron Man suit, they all come together and work to make a great event. At least, we hope it will be great. That's for you to decide. I am now trying to do it the right way and upload to a PPA. • Troubleshooting Oracle Java 7 with Firefox

  I run Ubuntu 13.04 with up-to-date Firefox and Oracle Java 7 is installed from the package oracle-java7-installer from the ppa:webupd8team/java PPA. Java doesn't work in Firefox. When I start firefox from the command line, and open a webpage with some java, the java applet doesn't work and in the terminal firefox prints: $ firefox (process:28565): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size == 0' failed java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java": error=13, Permission denied at java.lang.ProcessBuilder.start(ProcessBuilder.java:1041) at sun.plugin2.jvm.JVMLauncher.start(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.main.server.JVMInstance.startImpl(Unknown Source) (and some 20-30 lines more) (I guess the GLib-line can be ignored here.) Also, when I close the tab that contained the java applet, firefox freezes and I have to kill it. However, the permissions look fine: $ ls -l /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5746 Jul 22 17:35 /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/bin/java So, what could be wrong here?
