• How can I make Mac OS X Address Book display a person’s home address from an LDAP server?

  Hi, (I've posted this question on Stack Overflow first, but someone told me it belonged here.) I have a custom LDAP server, which I can customize to generate whichever object class and attributes I need. I'm trying to display people from that server in the Mac OS X address book. Names and organizations display correctly, as well as work-related phone and address. However, I've never been able to have a home address displayed in the address book. • Staying anonymous while hosting your site?

  I don't mean anonymous surfing. I mean hosting and having your own domain and such. The reason is that my blog is about religious/political topics which may cause me trouble in the future. This is the domain I am working on: www.james-croft.com I know that using Whois search my name can come up: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/james-croft.com The solution to that, as far as I understood, is to buy a privacy package from the domain registrar. in my case it is lucky register: http://i.stack.imgur.com/uvOdc.png Also hosting is a concern. I use the same hosting service for multiple websites. My question is this: Can my hosting be tracked and be used to identify me? Also: Are there other methods of finding out my identity from either Google Adsense or Amazon affiliate programs? I couldn't find any relevant articles online. • Replace text with spaces in MySQL

  I'm trying to do a global replace of search in my database, which has a lot of articles with a double carriage return because of this code: <p> </p> I'd like to replace this in my WordPress blog so instead of that appears... nothing, and so I can delete the CR. I've tried this on my database UPDATE wp_posts set post_content = replace (post_content,'<p> </p>',''); but didn't work. Why? Do I have to add special thinks to consider the space between the <p>and the</p>? Mmm. Good points, both Jon Angliss and Wim. Jon, as you could have guessed, the database shows no entries with that text string. So there's something going on inside the post_content field. Wim, the famous   was replaced previously, but there are still hundreds of posts that for some reason have something different between the p and the /p tags. I've tried to replace <p>?</p>, but again, no results. There's some character (or several) there, but I don't know how to discover that. Maybe it's the character set of my terminal, but I've accessed the database from phpmyadmin and in that case there's a space character between the p and the /p. Weird.

  I have been doing some reading about CPU clock speeds and how CPU clock speeds are calculated. After reading several articles, I have come to the understanding that your CPU clock speed is determined by: CPU clock speed = cpu multiplier x mobo clock speed A few questions came about after reading this which I cannot seem to find the answer to anywhere: If the CPU clock speed is dependent upon the mobo clock speed, then how is the clock speed of the CPU predetermined upon buying the CPU (i.e. written on the box without knowing what mobo is being used)? After installation, does the CPU adjust it's multiplier based upon the mobo clock speed to achieve advertised speeds? For example, if the CPU clocks speed is advertised at 2.4GHz and the mobo clock speed is 100MHz, will the multiplier be automatically set to 24x? Why does mobo clock speed seem to not be very important / talked about? For example, when I search on Newegg, mobo clock speed never seems to be listed. When I search enthusiast forums and overclocking forums, mobo clock speed is rarely mentioned. To me, it seems like the mobo clock speed would be pretty important. If I am understanding things correctly, a lower mobo clock speed means that you CPU must work harder to achieve advertised clock speeds. I guess that I should stop there with the questions for now, as I may be asking my questions based on incorrect assumptions. Thanks!

• Alternatives to Splunk?

  I'm pretty impressed with Splunk, especially version 4. Pretty graphs, alerting (Enterprise only), and fast, accurate, searching. It's a great product. However, the cost just way too high to consider for full production use for our company. All we really need is to be able to index different logs in a central place, and have reasonable searching on that. Having alerts based on a saved search is also really nice. We don't really go beyond that. In fact, our biggest usage has been in deploying new applications. Everything gets logged via log4net to either the Event log on Windows or a text file on Linux. Splunk makes it pretty easy to quickly search across those to make sure all the parts of the app are working ok -- that's saved us tons of time versus hunting down individual logging sources. What alternatives exist in this market? I have a sinking feeling Splunk's pricing is so high because they have the best product by far, and they know it. We want the server to run on Windows. I'd be open to a split model, using one product for general logs (collect via syslog/Snare), and a dedicated product for our custom apps (like Log4Net Dashboard). Would using a simple syslog server such as Kiwi, sent to SQL Server (perhaps with fulltext enabled) work? I'd hope the cost should be well under 5 figures, USD. (And yes, I know, we're cheap. We're a startup with little money, and BizSpark takes care of all our MS licensing.) Edit: I should add, we have about 10 physical servers, 20 VMs, and a couple firewalls and switches. 90% is Windows.

• Workstations cannot see new MS Server 2008 domain, but can access DHCP.

  The XP Pro workstations do not see the new replacement domain upon boot; they only see their cached entry for the old (server 2003) domain controller. The old_server is not connected to the network. I have DHCP working with the same scope as the old_server. The DC netbios is city01 while the domain's FQDN is city.domain.org (I think this is mistaken and should have been just domain.org) But, the second link led me to a post which I believe answers my question. I did as they instructed by opening Local Area Connection Properties, then selecting TCP/IPv4 and setting the sole preferred DNS server to the local hosts static IP (10.10.1.1). I am hoping to reach the point where I can define users and user groups. Also, does TechNet have a single theoretical overview document I could read. I really don't like treating comps as magic. • LDAP not showing secondary groups

So, I went and setup LDAP on a couple of my debian VMs, using libpam-ldapd and I discovered this odd problem. • Dual booting Linux/Win7, Grub refuses to load Win7

  Decided to give Linux Mint a try (Ubuntu's interface annoys me), so I installed it with the intention of dual booting with Windows 7. Installation went fine, but now I can only boot into Linux Mint. Grub lists two Windows 7 menu options, but selecting either of them causes an "unknown file system" error and dumps me into a Grub recovery prompt. There, I have to manually reset the root and prefix options, as they reset hd0,msdos6 when they should be hd0,msdos5. I ran Boot Repair twice, once to fix grub errors, once to rebuild the MBR, but it didn't fix anything. • Spotlight can't see anything in Applications

  There have been other threads on this but none of the solutions mentioned have helped me. Spotlight has stopped showing any results for my Applications. I've tried reindexing and removing the index so it rebuilds it. No change. I've tried adding Applications to the Privacy tab and removing it, no change. I tried repairing disk permissions and redoing the above, no change. I've tried removing everything from the index except Applications and then I just get nothing for any search at all (except dictionary entries). I tried adding a symlink in my homedir to Applications and reindexing, but no change. Any ideas on what to do? I'm running Snow Leopard. This is driving me crazy! Update: I've noticed that when I start a reindex with sudo mdutil -E / and then immediately do a spotlight search for an app that the app shows up temporarily until spotlight gets disabled due to active indexing. After the indexing is done the app entries go away.

• Can PaperPort be used to convert a non OCR PDF to OCR PDF?

  My scanner came with the following software: ScanSoft PageViewer ScanSoft PaperPort ScanDirect I believe it also comes with a basic version of OmniPage I'm not sure which of these programs is the one that actually performs the OCR. When I scan a document, it can perform OCR on it and convert it to a searchable PDF. Is there any way I can take an existing image or PDF file and run the same OCR engine on it in order to create a searchable PDF?

  I'm trying to run a rather large query that is supposed to run nightly to populate a table. I'm getting an error saying Incorrect key file for table '/var/tmp/#sql_201e_0.MYI'; try to repair it but the storage engine I'm using (whatever the default is, I guess?) doesn't support repairing tables. how do I fix this so I can run the query? We are under pressure to get this table loaded for a client.

• Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

  I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about. • Error occurs when Win 7 opens

  I have an HP customized laptop barely a week old. Since yesterday it has given me an error message while opening Windows- every time. it gives error code (0x40000015) refers to an exception at location (0x0033fa4d). I have 64 bit Win 7 and had been transferring files. And installing programs. 8 GB Ram 650 gb hard drive. Not sure which program caused this. Q's that I've seen with this error code all say it occurs while shutting down. A search re. error code told me to use a removal tool. When I downloaded the tool,I got a message saying it is not compatible with Windows 7. Is that really possible? Search re. location code yielded nothing I am an intermediate user. I can restore to an earlier time but I don't know which program might do this again.

• Nexus functionality is limited after installation

  I have a CentOS based server with Sonatype Nexus 2.0.4-1 installed. The issue is that there are no standard "Artifact Search", "Advanced Search", "Browse Index", "Refresh Index" Nexus features, as well as Artifact Information tab after selection of any artifact (only Maven Information tab). I tried to Google, but was amazed that there're no information about this issue. • How do I find funny pictures?

  No, not lolcats. And I'm not really looking for a specific site, either. I have often wished that I had some funny picture to illustrate a presentation, a website, a post, an email, or something else. Google image search and stock photo services have hardly ever helped me, although that may be because I'm doing something wrong. Jeff Atwood seems to have no problem to find funny pictures for his codinghorror and stackoverflow blogs, as well as for the error messages on the trilogy sites. One of my favourites was this elephant. Other bloggers also seem to be quite good at it. I'm wondering if I simply lack the creativity or if there's sources or methods I don't know about. I could think of the following ways to get pictures, but I'm not sure whether this is really "how they do it". keep a collection of pictures that you stumbled upon and liked (takes quite some time to build up to a proper library), when you need a picture, there's one in there maybe have pictures on paper, too, like from magazines or ads. when you are looking for a picture, search online (Flickr, Google, stock photos). This has never really worked for me, I don't know why. produce the pictures yourself, i. e. have a good library of source material or find some online and apply some creativity and suitable software. I could imagine that this could work well once you have the practice.

• Free web-based software for team collaboration/documentation

  Looking for some advice here, as my search has turned up to be pretty fruitless. My group (9 people - SAs, programmers, and two network guys) is looking for some sort of web tool to... ahem... "facilitate increased collaboration" (we didn't use a buzzword generator, I swear). At the moment, we have an unified ticketing system that's braindead, but is here to stay for political/logistical reasons. We've got 2 wikis ("old" and "new"), neither of which fulfill our needs, and are therefore not used very often. We're looking for a free (as in both cost and open source) web-based tool. Management side: Wants to be able to track project status, who's doing what, whether deadlines are being met, etc. Doesn't want full-fledged "project management" app, just something where we can update "yeah this was done" or "waiting for Bob to configure the widgets". TeamBox (www.teambox.com) was suggested, but it seems almost too gimmicky, and doesn't meet any of the other requirements: Non-management side: - flexible, powerful wiki for all documentation (i.e. includes good tables, easy markup, syntax highlighting, etc.) - good full text search of everything (i.e. type in a hostname and get every instance anyone ever uttered that name) - task lists or ToDo lists, hopefully about to be grouped into a number of "projects" - file uploads - RSS or Atom feeds, email alerts of updates We're open to doing some customizations (adding some features, notification/feeds, searching, SVN integration, etc.) but need something F/OSS that will run under Apache. My conundrum is that most of the choices I've found so far fall into one of these categories: project management/task tracking with poor wiki/documentation/knowledge base support wiki with no task tracking support ticketing system with everything else bolted on (we already have one that we're stuck with) code-centric application (we do little "development", mostly SA work) Any suggestions? Or, lacking that, any comments on which software would be easiest to add the lacking features to (hopefully ending up with something that actually looks good and works well)?

• directory services group query changing randomly

  I am receiving an unusual behaviour in my asp.net application. I have code that uses Directory Services to find the AD groups for a given, authenticated user. The code goes something like ... string username = "user"; string domain = "LDAP://DC=domain,DC=com"; DirectorySearcher search = new DirectorySearcher(domain); search.Filter = "(SAMAccountName=" + username + ")"; And then I query and get the list of groups for the given user. The problem is that the code was receiving the list of groups as a list of strings. With our latest release of the software, we are starting to receive the list of groups as a byte[]. The system will return string, suddenly return byte[] and then with a reboot it returns string again. • Cannot install SQL 2008 Workstation Components on Windows XP SP2

  Hi, i am trying to install the workstation components of sql server 2008 on my windows xp sp2 machine and during the setup, the only options i have to install are the database engine and sdk. all of the other options including books, workstation components are missing. Using the same installer disks i was able to install the whole works on a server. I do not have any version of sql currently installed on the xp machine.. am i doing something wrong?
