Which SOA architecture is most appropriate for a Java application?

I am currently working on a pretty large Java 6 application where we are looking to split some of our functionality out into a service oriented architecture. It seems that the primary SOA framework for the application space is OSGi and I have been looking into Felix and Knopplerfish but I wanted to make sure that this isn't my only option. Does it make sense to use an actual web service protocol for our application like SOAP, even though we are not building a web app? Is this even acceptable? Have any of you used an implementation of OSGi (Felix, etc.) with your desktop application? if so, how did it go? Do you know of anything better? We're all pretty new to SOA here so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Video Streaming

First I need to state that I am not the developer so I will state the issue in business terms but please respond with a technical solution as I will be passing on your posts to the developer. We are building a web based application in SilverLight and WPF that consists of communication between a customer service rep and a customer. The application will inlcude a webcam that will provide the customer with the ability to see the customer service rep and the rep will also be able to see an image of themselves but will not be able to see the customer. Similar functionality to a live web chat with video component. There could potentially be bandwidth issues and we do not want the customer to have to download anything. Any recommendations on how to do this?

StreamInsight 2.1, meet LINQ

Someone recently called LINQ “magic” in my hearing. I leapt to LINQ’s defense immediately. Turns out some people don’t realize “magic” is can be a pejorative term. I thought LINQ needed demystification. Here’s your best demystification resource: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mattwar/archive/2008/11/18/linq-links.aspx. I won’t repeat much of what Matt Warren says in his excellent series, but will talk about some core ideas and how they affect the 2.1 release of StreamInsight. Let’s tell the story of a LINQ query. Compile time It begins with some code: IQueryable<Product> products = ...; var query = from p in products where p.Name == "Widget" select p.ProductID; foreach (int id in query) { ... When the code is compiled, the C# compiler (among other things) de-sugars the query expression (see C# spec section 7.16): ... var query = products.Where(p => p.Name == "Widget").Select(p => p.ProductID); ... Overload resolution subsequently binds the Queryable.Where<Product> and Queryable.Select<Product, int> extension methods (see C# spec sections 7.5 and 7.6.5). After overload resolution, the compiler knows something interesting about the anonymous functions (lambda syntax) in the de-sugared code: they must be converted to expression trees, i.e.,“an object structure that represents the structure of the anonymous function itself” (see C# spec section 6.5). The conversion is equivalent to the following rewrite: ... var prm1 = Expression.Parameter(typeof(Product), "p"); var prm2 = Expression.Parameter(typeof(Product), "p"); var query = Queryable.Select<Product, int>( Queryable.Where<Product>( products, Expression.Lambda<Func<Product, bool>>(Expression.Property(prm1, "Name"), prm1)), Expression.Lambda<Func<Product, int>>(Expression.Property(prm2, "ProductID"), prm2)); ... If the “products” expression had type IEnumerable<Product>, the compiler would have chosen the Enumerable.Where and Enumerable.Select extension methods instead, in which case the anonymous functions would have been converted to delegates. At this point, we’ve reduced the LINQ query to familiar code that will compile in C# 2.0. (Note that I’m using C# snippets to illustrate transformations that occur in the compiler, not to suggest a viable compiler design!) Runtime When the above program is executed, the Queryable.Where method is invoked. It takes two arguments. The first is an IQueryable<> instance that exposes an Expression property and a Provider property. The second is an expression tree. The Queryable.Where method implementation looks something like this: public static IQueryable<T> Where<T>(this IQueryable<T> source, Expression<Func<T, bool>> predicate) { return source.Provider.CreateQuery<T>( Expression.Call(this method, source.Expression, Expression.Quote(predicate))); } Notice that the method is really just composing a new expression tree that calls itself with arguments derived from the source and predicate arguments. Also notice that the query object returned from the method is associated with the same provider as the source query. By invoking operator methods, we’re constructing an expression tree that describes a query. Interestingly, the compiler and operator methods are colluding to construct a query expression tree. The important takeaway is that expression trees are built in one of two ways: (1) by the compiler when it sees an anonymous function that needs to be converted to an expression tree, and; (2) by a query operator method that constructs a new queryable object with an expression tree rooted in a call to the operator method (self-referential). Next we hit the foreach block. At this point, the power of LINQ queries becomes apparent. The provider is able to determine how the query expression tree is evaluated! The code that began our story was intentionally vague about the definition of the “products” collection. Maybe it is a queryable in-memory collection of products: var products = new[] { new Product { Name = "Widget", ProductID = 1 } }.AsQueryable(); The in-memory LINQ provider works by rewriting Queryable method calls to Enumerable method calls in the query expression tree. It then compiles the expression tree and evaluates it. It should be mentioned that the provider does not blindly rewrite all Queryable calls. It only rewrites a call when its arguments have been rewritten in a way that introduces a type mismatch, e.g. the first argument to Queryable.Where<Product> being rewritten as an expression of type IEnumerable<Product> from IQueryable<Product>. The type mismatch is triggered initially by a “leaf” expression like the one associated with the AsQueryable query: when the provider recognizes one of its own leaf expressions, it replaces the expression with the original IEnumerable<> constant expression. I like to think of this rewrite process as “type irritation” because the rewritten leaf expression is like a foreign body that triggers an immune response (further rewrites) in the tree. The technique ensures that only those portions of the expression tree constructed by a particular provider are rewritten by that provider: no type irritation, no rewrite. Let’s consider the behavior of an alternative LINQ provider. If “products” is a collection created by a LINQ to SQL provider: var products = new NorthwindDataContext().Products; the provider rewrites the expression tree as a SQL query that is then evaluated by your favorite RDBMS. The predicate may ultimately be evaluated using an index! In this example, the expression associated with the Products property is the “leaf” expression. StreamInsight 2.1 For the in-memory LINQ to Objects provider, a leaf is an in-memory collection. For LINQ to SQL, a leaf is a table or view. When defining a “process” in StreamInsight 2.1, what is a leaf? To StreamInsight a leaf is logic: an adapter, a sequence, or even a query targeting an entirely different LINQ provider! How do we represent the logic? Remember that a standing query may outlive the client that provisioned it. A reference to a sequence object in the client application is therefore not terribly useful. But if we instead represent the code constructing the sequence as an expression, we can host the sequence in the server: using (var server = Server.Connect(...)) { var app = server.Applications["my application"]; var source = app.DefineObservable(() => Observable.Range(0, 10, Scheduler.NewThread)); var query = from i in source where i % 2 == 0 select i; } Example 1: defining a source and composing a query Let’s look in more detail at what’s happening in example 1. We first connect to the remote server and retrieve an existing app. Next, we define a simple Reactive sequence using the Observable.Range method. Notice that the call to the Range method is in the body of an anonymous function. This is important because it means the source sequence definition is in the form of an expression, rather than simply an opaque reference to an IObservable<int> object. The variation in Example 2 fails. Although it looks similar, the sequence is now a reference to an in-memory observable collection: var local = Observable.Range(0, 10, Scheduler.NewThread); var source = app.DefineObservable(() => local); // can’t serialize ‘local’! Example 2: error referencing unserializable local object The Define* methods support definitions of operator tree leaves that target the StreamInsight server. These methods all have the same basic structure. The definition argument is a lambda expression taking between 0 and 16 arguments and returning a source or sink. The method returns a proxy for the source or sink that can then be used for the usual style of LINQ query composition. The “define” methods exploit the compile-time C# feature that converts anonymous functions into translatable expression trees! Query composition exploits the runtime pattern that allows expression trees to be constructed by operators taking queryable and expression (Expression<>) arguments. The practical upshot: once you’ve Defined a source, you can compose LINQ queries in the familiar way using query expressions and operator combinators. Notably, queries can be composed using pull-sequences (LINQ to Objects IQueryable<> inputs), push sequences (Reactive IQbservable<> inputs), and temporal sequences (StreamInsight IQStreamable<> inputs). You can even construct processes that span these three domains using “bridge” method overloads (ToEnumerable, ToObservable and To*Streamable). Finally, the targeted rewrite via type irritation pattern is used to ensure that StreamInsight computations can leverage other LINQ providers as well. Consider the following example (this example depends on Interactive Extensions): var source = app.DefineEnumerable((int id) => EnumerableEx.Using(() => new NorthwindDataContext(), context => from p in context.Products where p.ProductID == id select p.ProductName)); Within the definition, StreamInsight has no reason to suspect that it ‘owns’ the Queryable.Where and Queryable.Select calls, and it can therefore defer to LINQ to SQL! Let’s use this source in the context of a StreamInsight process: var sink = app.DefineObserver(() => Observer.Create<string>(Console.WriteLine)); var query = from name in source(1).ToObservable() where name == "Widget" select name; using (query.Bind(sink).Run("process")) { ... } When we run the binding, the source portion which filters on product ID and projects the product name is evaluated by SQL Server. Outside of the definition, responsibility for evaluation shifts to the StreamInsight server where we create a bridge to the Reactive Framework (using ToObservable) and evaluate an additional predicate. It’s incredibly easy to define computations that span multiple domains using these new features in StreamInsight 2.1! Regards, The StreamInsight Team

Caching for a Custom Repositiory Adapter for WebSphere Portal Virtual Member Manager

I'm looking at writing a custom repository adapter to interact with Virtual Member Manager on WebSphere Portal 6.1. Basically, its a layer that takes a request in the form of a commonj.sco.DataObject and passes that on to an external web service, to get various information on our logged in users that is not otherwise available in LDAP. I'm concerned about the performance hit of going to a service every time we want to pull some permission from the back end. My question is, can the Virtual Member Manager handle caching of data going in and out of the custom repository adapters, or is that something I'm going to have to build into the adapter myself?

Has anyone managed to get jdotnetservices working on Android ?

I am trying to use jdotnetservices (http://www.jdotnetservices.com/), which is a java SDK for Windows Azure AppFabric, in an Android application. I have had to make some tweaks but only minor ones because jdotnetservices is written to target Java 1.6 and Android uses 1.5. I can get it to compile and run OK but I'm getting errors when I try to access the service bus ACS. Specifically, if I try to get a token from the service bus ACS I get this : Hostname mysolution-sb.accesscontrol.windows.net was not verified. Can anyone give me some pointers as to why this might be ? I can browse to the url of the ACS from Android : https://mysolution-sb.accesscontrol.windows.net/wrapv0.9 which gives me a certificate error, could this be why ? Any way round this ?

Analysis Services with excel as front end - is it possible to get the nicer UI that powerpivot provi

I have been looking into PowerPivot and concluded that for "self service BI" and ahoc buidling of cubes it has its uses. In particular I like the enhanced UI that you get from using PowerPivot rather than just using a PivotTable hooked up to an analysis services datasource. However it seems that hooking up PowerPivot to an existing analysis services cube is not a solution for "organisational BI". It is not always desireable to suck millions of rows into excel at once and the interface between PowerPivot and analysis services is very poor in my book. Hence the question is can an existing analysis services solution get the enhanced ui features that power pivot brings, withoout using powerpivot as the design tool? If powerpivot is aimed ad self service/personal BI then it seems bizare that the UI for this is better than for bigger/more costly analysis services solutions.

Testing with Unittest Python

Hello, I am runninig test's with Python Unittest. I am running tests but I want to do negative testing and I would like to test if a function throw's an exception, it passes but if no exception is thrown the test fail's. The script I have is: try: result = self.client.service.GetStreamUri(self.stream, self.token) self.assertFalse except suds.WebFault, e: self.assertTrue else: self.assertTrue This alway's passes as True even when the function work's perfectly. I have also tried various other way's including: try: result = self.client.service.GetStreamUri(self.stream, self.token) self.assertFalse except suds.WebFault, e: self.assertTrue except Exception, e: self.assertTrue Does anyone have any suggestions? It's a service that converts values between different units. The units are stated in the WSDL. Now, is there any way to read those units and, say, populate a Spinner to let users choose the units they want to work with? A code solution will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Deploying Multiple Environments in Spring-MVC

Currently all web apps are deployed using seperate config files:  <import bean... development/> This has disadvantages, even if you only need to swap out one config file, that I'm sure everyone is familiar with (wondering what just deployed without searching through XML is one of them) I want to add Logging to my application that basically says 'RUNNING IN PRODUCTION MODE', with a description of the services deployed and what mode they are working in. RUNNING IN PRODUCTION MODE Client Service - Production Messaging Service - Local and so on... Is this possible in Spring using a conventional deployment (putting a war on a server)? What other things do people do to manage deployments and software configurations? If not, what other ways could you achieve something similar?

Websphere Java application startup

I have two Java applications running on a Websphere application server. The first application is COTS software (Plateau) I will call App1 and includes an API which can be used in custom applications to interact with App1. This app takes a couple minutes to start in Websphere. The second application is custom software I will call App2 and is deployed as a web service which utilizes the App1 API to interact with App1; so it is dependent on App1. This app takes just seconds to start in Websphere. I run into a problem in certain App1 functionality when we bounce Websphere and the App2 web service is called by a client before the App1 application has fully started. Is there a way I can delay App2 from starting until App1 is fully started in Websphere? Is there a way to design App2 to programmatically check that App1 is available before it attempts to use the API?

Why is this unwanted ">" character being displayed when displaying this PHP document in a browser?

This page takes an asset id from $_GET of the url and displays some info about the asset after querying a mysql database. When I view the page in my browser there is an unwanted "" character within the page and I have no idea why. I've commented where it appears. It appears before the < table create tag right afterward. The < table tag was originally outside the php script section but I threw it in to see if it made a difference. It did not. Thank you all. I am viewing the page in Firefox. Dynamic Multiple Choice (Like a Wizard) - How would you design it? (e.g. Schema, AI model, etc.)

This question can probably be broken up into multiple questions, but here goes... In essence, I'd like to allow users to type in what they would like to do and provide a wizard-like interface to ask for information which is missing to complete a requested query. For example, let's say a user types: "What is the weather like in Springfield?" We recognize the user is interested in weather, but it could be Springfield, Il or Springfield in another state. A follow-up question would be: What Springfield did you want weather for? 1 - Springfield, Il 2 - Springfield, Wi You can probably think of a million examples where a request is missing key data or its ambiguous. Make the assumption the gist of what the user wants can be understood, but there are missing pieces of data required to complete the request. Perhaps you can take it as far back as asking what the user wants to do and "leading" them to a query. This is not AI in the sense of taking any input and truly understanding it. I'm not referring to having some way to hold a conversation with a user. It's about inferring what a user wants, checking to see if there is an applicable service to be provided, identifying the inputs needed and overlaying that on top of what's missing from the request, then asking the user for the remaining information. That's it! :-) How would you want to store the information about services? How would you go about determining what was missing from the input data? My thoughts: Use regex expressions to identify clear pieces of information. These will be matched to the parameters of a service. Figure out which parameters do not have matching data and look up the associated question for those parameters. Ask those questions and capture answers. Re-run the service passing in the newly captured data. These would be more free-form questions. For multiple choice, identify the ambiguity and search for potential matches ranked in order of likelihood (add in user history/preferences to help decide). Provide the top 3 as choices. Hi, I was wondering if anyone might be able to explain to me why it's taking nearly 30 seconds each time my Java web app sends an email using Gmail's SMTP server? See the following timestamps: 13/04/2010-22:24:27:281 DEBUG test.service.impl.SynchronousEmailService - Before sending mail. 13/04/2010-22:24:52:625 DEBUG test.service.impl.SynchronousEmailService - After sending mail. I'm using spring's JavaMailSender class with the following settings: email.host=smtp.gmail.com [email protected] email.password=mypassword email.port=465 mail.smtp.auth.required=true Note that the mail is getting sent and I'm receiving it fine, there's just this delay which is resulting in a slow experience for the application user. If you know how I can diagnose the problem myself that would be good too :)

I have a web service that is deployed in tomcat, and it is rejecting a soap request over https. However, I can't see any logs as to why it is doing so. I have the following set in my service endpoint implementation file: System.setProperty("javax.net.debug", "all"); System.setProperty("java.security.debug", "all"); And I pass the following parameters to tomcat: -Dcom.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.HttpAdapter.dump=true -Dcom.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.client.HttpTransportPipe.dump=true Is there anything else I need to do to see the internal jaxws logs? Are there some other loggers I need to enable?

Java Caching on distributed environment

Hi, I am supposed to create a simple replicated cache using java for internal purpose which will be used in a distributed environment. I have seen oracle has implemented Replicated Cache Service. http://wiki.tangosol.com/display/COH32UG/Replicated+Cache+Service The problem I am facing is while doing an update or remove, I acquire lock on other cache's to the point the cache get's updated and notifies others of the change. This is eventually going into a dead lock situation, while removing. Is there any strategy I should follow while updating or removing from cache's. Runtime.exec causes duplicate JVM to hang indefinitely until killed (Solaris 10)

All, We are running a J2EE application on WebLogic server 9.2 MP2 with a jrockit 64-bit JVM (27.3.1) on Solaris 10. We call use runtime.exec to call an executable called jfmerge to create PDF documents. We have found that in Solaris, when runtime.exec is called, a duplicate JVM is temporarily spawned to kick off the jfmerge process. While this is inefficient (our JVM is 5 GB, thus the duplicated shell JVM is also 5 GB), the major problem lies in the fact that when there is heavy load on this functionality (PDF generation) in our application, sometimes the duplicated JVM never exits. When the JVM hangs, the servers create large issues (extreme application slowness and terminated user sessions) as the entire duplicate JVM get's all of its 5 GB of process size written to disk swap. Is there a suitable public license for my needs (see body)?

I would like to license my project with the flowing conditions: Personal and educational usage of the program and its source codes is to be free. In case of publishing of derivative works the original work and author (me) must be mentioned (incl. textual link to my website in a not-very-far-hidden place) and the derivative work must have different name. A derivative work can be closed-source. In every case of commercial (when the end-user is a commercial body (as a company (expect of non-profit companies), an individual entrepreneur or government office)) usage of my work or any of derivative works made by anyone, the end-user, service provider or the derivative author must buy a commercial license from me. I mean no guarantees or resoinsibilities, either expressed or implied... (except the case when one explicitly purchases a support service contract from me and the particular contract specifies a responsibility). Is there a known common license for this case? May it be OSI-approved?

DRb connecting to linux client from windows

I have a few DRb services running on different windows machines and they can all connect and talk with each other just fine. When I put these DRb services on Linux machines and try to connect from windows nothing happens and I get a DRB:ConnError ... the service on Linux is never touched. So I did a netstat on the linux box and the service(port) were not listed anywhere even though the program is clearly running. Is there someting that I'm missing when talking to DRb services on Linux from a windows machine?

WCF Caching Solution - Need Advice

The company I work for is looking to implement a caching solution. We have several WCF Web Services hosted and we need to cache certain values that can be persisted and fetched regardless of a client's session to a service. I am looking at the following technologies: Caching Application Block 4.1 WCF TCP Service using HttpRuntime Caching Memcached Win32 and Client Microsoft AppFabric Caching Beta 2 Our test server is a Windows Server 2003 with IIS6, but our production server is Windows Server 2008, so any of the above options would work (except for AppFabric Caching on our test server). Does anyone have any experience with any of these? This caching solution will not be used to store a lot of data, but it will need to be fetched from frequently and fast. Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to run Microsoft's .NET Framework Configuration Tool (Mscorcfg.msc). I have Visual Studio 2008 installed. I also have the following installed on my PC: Microsoft .Net Framework v1.0.3705 Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 Microsoft .Net Framework v4.0.30319 I'm not sure why, but I can't start "Mscorcfg.msc" the usual way (as suggested in the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2bc0cxhc(VS.80).aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2bc0cxhc.aspx URL). I looked for "Mscorcfg.msc" on my PC and found only 1 occurence (in the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder). When I double-click on the .msc file in Windows Explorer, I get the "MMC could not create the snap-in." message. What should I do ? Thanks
