• What's new in Solaris 11.1?

  Solaris 11.1 is released. This is the first release update since Solaris 11 11/11, the versioning has been changed from MM/YY style to 11.1 highlighting that this is Solaris 11 Update 1.  Solaris 11 itself has been great. What's new in Solaris 11.1? Allow me to pick some new features from the What's New PDF that can be found in the official Oracle Solaris 11.1 Documentation. The updates are very numerous, I really can't include all.  I. New AI Automated Installer RBAC profiles have been introduced to enable delegation of installation tasks. II. The interactive installer now supports installing the OS to iSCSI targets. III. ASR (Auto Service Request) and OCM (Oracle Configuration Manager) have been enabled by default to proactively provide support information and create service requests to speed up support processes. This is optional and can be disabled but helps a lot in supportcases. For further information, see: http://oracle.com/goto/solarisautoreg IV. The new command svcbundle helps you to create SMF manifests without having to struggle with XML editing. (btw, do you know the interactive editprop subcommand in svccfg? The listprop/setprop subcommands are great for scripting and automating, but for an interactive property editing session try, for example, this: svccfg -s svc:/application/pkg/system-repository:default editprop )  V. pfedit: Ever wondered how to delegate editing permissions to certain files? It is well known "sudo /usr/bin/vi /etc/hosts" is not the right way, for sudo elevates the complete vi process to admin levels, and the user can "break" out of the session as root with simply starting a shell from that vi. Now, the new pfedit command provides a solution exactly to this challenge - an auditable, secure, per-user configurable editing possibility. See the pfedit man page for examples.   VI. rsyslog, the popular logging daemon (filters, SSL, formattable output, SQL collect...) has been included in Solaris 11.1 as an alternative to syslog.  VII: Zones: Solaris Zones - as a major Solaris differentiator - got lots of love in terms of new features: ZOSS - Zones on Shared Storage: Placing your zones to shared storage (FC, iSCSI) has never been this easy - via zonecfg.  parallell updates - with S11's bootenvironments updating zones was no problem and meant no downtime anyway, but still, now you can update them parallelly, a way faster update action if you are running a large number of zones. This is like parallell patching in Solaris 10, but with all the IPS/ZFS/S11 goodness.  per-zone fstype statistics: Running zones on a shared filesystems complicate the I/O debugging, since ZFS collects all the random writes and delivers them sequentially to boost performance. Now, over kstat you can find out which zone's I/O has an impact on the other ones, see the examples in the documentation: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26502_01/html/E29024/gmheh.html#scrolltoc Zones got RDSv3 protocol support for InfiniBand, and IPoIB support with Crossbow's anet (automatic vnic creation) feature.  NUMA I/O support for Zones: customers can now determine the NUMA I/O topology of the system from within zones.  VIII: Security got a lot of attention too:  Automated security/audit reporting, with builtin reporting templates e.g. for PCI (payment card industry) audits.  PAM is now configureable on a per-user basis instead of system wide, allowing different authentication requirements for different users  SSH in Solaris 11.1 now supports running in FIPS 140-2 mode, that is, in a U.S. government security accredited fashion.  SHA512/224 and SHA512/256 cryptographic hash functions are implemented in a FIPS-compliant way - and on a T4 implemented in silicon! That is, goverment-approved cryptography at HW-speed.  Generally, Solaris is currently under evaluation to be both FIPS and Common Criteria certified.  IX. Networking, as one of the core strengths of Solaris 11, has been extended with:  Data Center Bridging (DCB) - not only setups where network and storage share the same fabric (FCoE, anyone?) can have Quality-of-Service requirements. DCB enables peers to distinguish traffic based on priorities. Your NICs have to support DCB, see the documentation, and additional information on Wikipedia. DataLink MultiPathing, DLMP, enables link aggregation to span across multiple switches, even between those of different vendors. But there are essential differences to the good old bandwidth-aggregating LACP, see the documentation: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26502_01/html/E28993/gmdlu.html#scrolltoc VNIC live migration is now supported from one physical NIC to another on-the-fly  X. Data management:  FedFS, (Federated FileSystem) is new, it relies on Solaris 11's NFS referring mechanism to join separate shares of different NFS servers into a single filesystem namespace. The referring system has been there since S11 11/11, in Solaris 11.1 FedFS uses a LDAP - as the one global nameservice to bind them all.  The iSCSI initiator now uses the T4 CPU's HW-implemented CRC32 algorithm - thus improving iSCSI throughput while reducing CPU utilization on a T4 Storage locking improvements are now RAC aware, speeding up throughput with better locking-communication between nodes up to 20%!  XI: Kernel performance optimizations: The new Virtual Memory subsystem ("VM2") scales now to 100+ TB Memory ranges.  The memory predictor monitors large memory page usage, and adjust memory page sizes to applications' needs OSM, the Optimized Shared Memory allows Oracle DBs' SGA to be resized online XII: The Power Aware Dispatcher in now by default enabled, reducing power consumption of idle CPUs. Also, the LDoms' Power Management policies and the poweradm settings in Solaris 11 OS will cooperate. XIII: x86 boot: upgrade to the (Grand Unified Bootloader) GRUB2. Because grub2 differs in the configuration syntactically from grub1, one shall not edit the new grub configuration (grub.cfg) but use the new bootadm features to update it. GRUB2 adds UEFI support and also support for disks over 2TB. XIV: Improved viewing of per-CPU statistics of mpstat. This one might seem of less importance at first, but nowadays having better sorting/filtering possibilities on a periodically updated mpstat output of 256+ vCPUs can be a blessing. XV: Support for Solaris Cluster 4.1: The What's New document doesn't actually mention this one, since OSC 4.1 has not been released at the time 11.1 was. But since then it is available, and it requires Solaris 11.1. And it's only a "pkg update" away. ...aand I seriously need to stop here. There's a lot I missed, Edge Virtual Bridging, lofi tuning, ZFS sharing and crypto enhancements, USB3.0, pulseaudio, trusted extensions updates, etc - but if I mention all those then I effectively copy the What's New document. Which I recommend reading now anyway, it is a great extract of the 300+ new projects and RFE-followups in S11.1. And this blogpost is a summary of that extract.  For closing words, allow me to come back to Request For Enhancements, RFEs. Any customer can request features. Open up a Support Request, explain that this is an RFE, describe the feature you/your company desires to have in S11 implemented. The more SRs are collected for an RFE, the more chance it's got to get implemented. • insertNewObjectForEntityForName: inManagedObjectContext: returning NSNumber bug?

  I'm relatively well versed in CoreData and have been using it for several years with little or no difficulty. All of a sudden I'm now dumbfounded by an error. For the life of me, I can't figure out why insertNewObjectForEntityForName:inManagedObjectContext: is all of a sudden returning some sort of strange instance of NSNumber. GDB says the returned object is of the correct custom subclass of NSManagedObject, but when I go to print a description of the NSManagedObject itself, I get the following error: *** -[NSCFNumber objectID]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3f26f50 What's even stranger, is that I'm able to set some relationships and attributes using setValue:forKey: and all is good. But when I try to set once specific relationship, I get this error: *** -[NSCFNumber entity]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3f26f50 Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? I've tried clean all targets, restarting everything, even changing the model to the relationship in question is a to-one instead of a to-many. Nothing makes any difference.

  hi, i'm coding a little app for controlling soulseek - what i want do is clicking the "Search Files" button by code. i've got the handle to the tabbed control (SysTabControl32) and managed to change the tab with following code: rc1 = SendMessage(hwnd, TCM_SETCURFOCUS, ByVal 0, ByVal 0&) the problem: the tab control is changing to the proper button, but nothing happens. i assume i also also have to send a mouseclick to it, as when clicking by mouse, the button goes down and up again. any ideas how to do this? thx

  Hi, I am planning to implement a cache solution into an existing web app. Nothing complicated: basically a concurrent map that supports overflowing to disk and automatic eviction. Clustering the cache could be requirement in the future, but not now. I like ehcache's copyOnRead and copyOnWrite features, because it means that I don't have to manually clone things before modifying something I take out of the cache. Now I have started to look at Infinispan, but I have not found anything equivalent there. Does it exist? • How can I make a DateTimePicker display an empty string?

  I would like to be able to display a DateTimePicker that has a default value of nothing, i.e. no date. For example, I have a start date dtTaskStart and an end date dtTaskEnd for a task, but the end date is not known, and not populated initially. I have specified a custom format of yyyy-MM-dd for both controls. Setting the value to null, or an empty string at runtime causes an error, so how can I accomplish this? I have considered using a checkbox to control the enabling of this field, but there is still the issue of displaying an initial value.. Edit: Arguably a duplicate of the question DateTimePicker Null Value (.NET), but the solution I found for my problem is not a solution for that question, so I think it should remain here for others to find..

• In ASP.NET, Can I Delete a row in GridView while the primary key of that table is not loaded into the gridview?

  Hi, I have a table with primary key whose importance is technically high and none business wise. So, when I display the table data to user, I would like not to show him the primary key. Even if I load it in sqldatasource and dont show (I did this by removing the cloumn in "Columns" tag of GridView), I am not able to update or delete row using the built-in UpdateCommand & DeleteCommand. I have created the delete paramters but it does nothing when I hit the delete button. How to get around it? Thanks R S Reddy

If you run this, it outputs I think the var is a when clearly it's 0. Now, I'm most certain this has something to do with the fact that we're using strings in our switch statement but the variable we're checking is an integer. Does anyone know why PHP behaves this way? It's nothing too major, but it did give me a bit of a headache today. Thanks folks!

• Init modules in apache2

  Hello, I used to write apache modules in apache 1.3, but these days I am willing to pass to apache2. The module that I am writing at the moment has is own binary data, not a database, for performance purposes. I need to load this data in shared memory, so every child can access it without making his own copy, and it would be practical to load/create the binary data at startup, as I was used to do with apache 1.3. Problem is that I don't find an init event in apache2, in 1.3 in the module struct, immediatly after STANDARD_MODULE_STUFF you find a place for a /** module initializer */, in which you can put a function that will be executed early. Body of the function I used to write is something like: if ( getppid == 1 ) { // Load global data here // this is the parent process void* data = loadGlobalData( someFilePath ); setGlobalData( config, data ); } else { // this is the init of a child process // do nothing } I am looking for a place in apache2 in where I can put a similar function. • System.Diaganostics.Process.Id Isn't the Same Process Id Shown in Task Manger. Why?

  I'm using c#'s System.Diagnostic.Process object. One of its properties is Id. The Id this produces is not the same as the PID, shown in Windows Task Manager. Why is this? You see, once this process is started. It launches two other unmanaged processes, for which I can't explicitly get IDs for by object property references. I have to search through all processes to find them by process name via System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcesses(). I'm trying to find a reliable way to kill this process and all associated processes by PID, the one that shows in Task Manager. Is there a better way? I can't just kill all processes with the associated process names, because that might kill other instances of those processes that have nothing to do with my program.

  I have a list that I need to parse where the all but the last element needs to be parsed by one parser, and the last element needs to be parsed by another parser. a = "p1 p1b ... p2" or a = "p2" Originally I tried parser = do parse1 <- many parser1 parse2 <- parser2 return AParse parse1 parse2 The problem is that parse1 can consume a parse2 input. So parse1 always consumes the entire list, and leave parse2 with nothing. Is there a way to say to apply parse1 to everything besides the last element in a string, and then apply parse2?

• WCF Blocking problem with mutiple clients!!

  Hi I seem to have a blocking issue with WCF. Say I have two users and each have created their own instance of a class exposed on a WCF host using net.tcp with endpoint something like this "net.tcp://localhost:32000/SymHost/". The class is PerSession context and concurrency is reentrant. The class exposes two methods Alive() which return a bool of true straight away and an AliveWait which I inserted which does a Thread.Sleep for 4 seconds before returning true (testing purposes). Now client 1 calls AliveWait() during which time he is blocked which is fair enough but then if client 2 makes a call to Alive() on its own instance he has to wait until client 1's call is returned - this behaviour is not what I would have expected? I would have expected client 2 to carry on as if nothing has happened or is this to do with the fact that they both share the same endpoint? Can anyone explain what is going on and how I can make sure that client 2 can call its own instance uninterrupted? Any help much appreciated!

The list of objects is a property in the codebehind file in the format list<object> When i add one object programatically, it appears fine. But when i try to bind the ItemSource of the ListBox to the list of objects, nothing shows up. • How do I refresh TinyMCE for the code that I add with JavaScript

  Hi, I need to insert code for flash to TinyMCE with JavaScript. If I insert the same code using HTML menu of TinyMCE, it automatically add flash icon to the editor. But if I insert the code using JavaScript, the actual code is inserted but it shows nothing on the screen. One trick I found is toggle TinyMCE to normal textarea and back to TinyMCE. Then, it shows the flash icon. Is there a better way to do that? Thanks. Sam

• NSNotification center may not respond to -object ?

  Hi, I'm trying to make simple use of the NSNotification center inside my iPhone application, but I seem to be doing something wrong in this case. I was under the impression that it was possible to retrieve an object associated with a particular message, or at least a reference to the object, but using the following example code I'm getting a warning, "NSNotification center may not respond to -object" - (void)addNewBookmark:(NSNotificationCenter *)notification { Bookmark *newBookMark = (Bookmark *)[notification object]; //Do some stuff with the bookmark object } Indeed, when I compile and run the code, basically nothing I try to do with the contents of the object actually gets carried out - it's simply ignored. The post code is as follows, - (IBAction)save:(id) sender{ //Sending the message with the related object [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] postNotificationName:@"addNewBookmark" object:bookmark]; } and the bookmark object itself is just a dictionary. I also tried using the "userInfo" argument and passing the bookmark object through that, but the result was the same. How should I be doing this? What am I doing wrong?

• What should a PHP generate to give back to a jQuery AJAX request?

  Perhaps it's a syntax error, but I never assume that. I have a -dead- simple AJAX test set up: http://www.mcphersonindustries.com/bucket/api.php is a file with simply: <?php echo "test"; ?> And I have Apache as localhost with this jQuery bit running: $(document).ready(function() { function doAjaxPost() { $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "http://www.mcphersonindustries.com/bucket/api.php", data: "null", success: function(resp){ console.log("Response: '" + resp + "'"); }, error: function(e){ console.log('Error: ' + e); } }); } doAjaxPost(); }); So Firebug spits out Response: '' each time, but nothing's coming through the request.   Hey all, I'm using this colorpicker (http://www.eyecon.ro/colorpicker) and am trying to capture the hex value so that I can use it on the server side to store the selected color. Then, I tried pulling the value using some simple jQuery calls, but got nothing... Please help....

• Externalising Google Maps InfoWindow Content When Marker Is Selected

  Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to take the content of a Google Maps InfoWindow and place it in an external DIV when the marker on the map is clicked? I've had a good dig around both the API docs and Google to see if I can find any examples or information relating to this but have had no luck so far. However I've not had a lot of time since I got asked about this one so I have had to skim a bit so it could be that I've missed something but nothing seems to be jumping out at me. Essentially I'd just like to know if this is indeed possible so that I don't waste anymore time researching something that is currently not possible with Google Maps. • haystack's RealTimeSearchIndex causes django to hang on data entry

  I'm using django-haystack and a xapian backend with real time indexing (haystack.indexes.RealTimeSearchIndexing) of model data and it works fine on my Ubuntu server. However, it causes django to hang upon data entry when I deployed the app on a RHEL5 server. Everything is hunky dory if I switch to a standard SearchIndex. Running ./manage.py rebuild_index manually works fine too. The major differences between the two setups would be the versions of Python (2.4.3 vs 2.6.4) and the xapian (1.0.4-1 vs 1.0.15). Any suggestions on what may be the problem? Nothing interesting appears in the logs, and I've tried different databases (mysql, sqlite3) and deployment methods (mod_python, wsgi) with no luck yet. I have noted the warning on the haystack docs stating that RealTimeSearchIndex is only handled gracefully with a Solr backend, however I'm running a very traffic site with only occasional writes so I'm fine with some CPU overheads on writes.

• Mono ASP.NET COM Reference

  I am sure this is a very dumb question to be asking for such a platform as Mono, but I am really stuck with .NET on one of my only remaining projects on MS platforms and would like to move away from it. The only problem is that the web site is dependent on a COM library that is simply a socket wrapper enforcing a messaging protocol. I could reverse the code (I actually made a 10k line attempt) but there's nothing better than the original if it works. Is there any way to reference a tlb export on Mono? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  Hi I need to segment text using fullstops using PHP/Javascript.The problem is if I use "." to split text then abbreviations , date formatting (12.03.2010 ) or urls as well split-ed , which I need to prevent.There are many such possibilities , I might not be able to imagine. How to recognize that the "." is used as fullstop and nothing else ? When I googled I found about SRX http://www.lisa.org/fileadmin/standards/srx20.html , is any opensource PHP project segment text using these rules ? I can do with any Linux based command line utility as well unless it is not paid. Thanks
