Is this understanding all right? Q2. About COM My naive understanding is that: a COM DLL seems to be just a new logical way to organize the functions and types exported by a standard Windows DLL. A COM DLL exports both functions such as DllRegisterServer() and DllGetClassObject(), and also the Classes which implements the IUnknown interface. Is this understanding all right? Q3. *.def & *.idl *.def is used to define the functions exported by a Windows DLL in the traditional way, such as DllGetClassObject(). *.idl is used to define the interface implemented by a COM coclass.   I'm curious why only some System.Web.UI.WebControl controls implement certain interfaces when they have the same properties of an interface. For instance, there are plenty of controls that have a Text property but only the following implement ITextControl: Label Literal DataBoundLiteral TextBox ListControl (TextBox and ListControl actually implement IEditableTextControl which implements ITextControl) TableCell, Button, HyperLink and others don't so I have to write code like this ITextControl textControl = control as ITextControl; TableCell tableCell = control as TableCell; if (textControl != null) { textControl.Text = value; } else if (tableCell != null) { tableCell.Text = value; } instead of this control.Text = value; Was this a design decision or an oversight?

  Hi, Is there a way to open a window from the current page using a javascript bookmarklet, and once the the child window has finished loading, setting the value of one of the elements in its DOM to some value from the current page, say for example the currently selected text. I know that this can be done in plane javascript, and also, by appending the value to the URL, and reading it from the web service opened in the new child window. I want to know if there is any other way, as the appending URL method does not let you send text more than two thousand odd characters long. Appreciate any help I can get!

• boost pool_alloc

  Why is the boost::fast_pool_allocator built on top of a singleton pool, and not a separate pool per allocator instance? Or to put it another way, why only provide that, and not the option of having a pool per allocator? Would having that be a bad idea? I have a class that internally uses about 10 different boost::unordered_map types. If I'd used the std::allocator then all the memory would go back to the system when it called delete, whereas now I have to call release_memory on many different allocator types at some point. Would I be stupid to roll my own allocator that uses pool instead of singleton_pool? thanks

• Migrating Ruby Site from EngineYard to Heroku

  As part of a larger project I've been tasked with migrating some existing Ruby on Rails sites (built with an old version of refinerycms 0.9.6.34, at least that's the version listed in the Gemfile included with the source). I don't normally work with Ruby so I'm at a bit of a loss. The previous developers simply handed over the latest git dump as well as a db dump. I'm working first with trying to get the site up working locally on an Ubuntu 11.10 local machine before pushing up to at test Heroku install. If it's possible to just push directly to Heroku with the files they gave, then I can try that, but it's my understanding I need to get everything working and then use Heroku's tools to deploy. The previous devs said they're using ruby 1.8.7 so in Ubuntu I've done the following: aptitude install ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev ruby1.8-full aptitude install rubygems1.8 I've restored the database and in the config directory I've made changes to the database.yml to point to the restored database. • UISlider returns two Touch Up Inside events, why does that happen?

  I have a slider that I'm using to set a float value somewhere. I connect Value Changed to a method in my viewController. That part works fine. I need to know when the user starts touching the control but not necessarily every single instant that the slider changes (I receive the Value Changed events for that). So I connected a Touch Up Inside event to another method in the viewController. The problem it, that method gets called twice when the user touches the UISlider control. WTF? It doesn't work that way with UIButtons or other touch events like Touch Down. I can work around it, I think, but it seems like a bug in the way the slider control handles touches. Does anybody know why it happens? BTW: the double touch event happens even when Touch Up Inside is the only connected event.

They are Don't send diffs 500 lines 1000 lines 5000 lines Send entire diff The problem is that spaces, special characters are not a part of identifiers and even cannot start with a number, so I would be sanitizing these values to only chars, numbers and _ To keep the original values I thought of putting these strings in the DescriptionAttribute, such that the final Enum should look like public enum DiffBehvaiour { [Description("Don't send diffs")] Dont_send_diffs, [Description("500 lines")] Diff_500_lines, [Description("1000 lines")] Diff_1000_lines, [Description("5000 lines")] Diff_5000_lines, [Description("Send entire diff")] Send_entire_diff } Then later using code I will retrieve the real string associated with the enumeration value, so that the correct string can be sent back the web service to get the correct resource. I want to know how to create the DescriptionAttribute using System.Reflection.Emit Basically the question is where and how to store the original string so that when the Enumeration value is chosen, the corresponding value can be retrieved. I am also interested in knowing how to access DescriptionAttribute when needed.

  I want to change the color on the navigation bar and the documentation states not to attempt to change the 'alpha' value. So, how can I set a color that is not the SDK defined values (e.g., [UIColor redColor], brownColor, etc.) if all the constructors provide an alpha value? I tried getting the current alpha value but that did not help. When I use a custom color, it causes the navigation bar to look like an x-ray (a scraggy, black-on-white).   Hello people, I'm getting crazy with a small problem here, I keep getting an error and I cant seem to figure out why, the code is supposed to change the range of a list, so if we give it a list with values (1 2 3 4) and we want to change the range in 11 to fourteen the result would be (11 12 13 14) the problem is that the last function called scale-list will give back an error saying: Debugger entered--Lisp error: (wrong-type-argument number-or-marker-p nil) anybody has a clue why?   So the site I'm working on has a filter system that operates by passing a key and value system through a querystring. The whole site is going through a re-factor soon and I'm maintaining the existing site so before we discuss the RIGHT way to implement this, I just need ideas for changing my delimiter. The current format is like this: cf=<key>:<value> The problem is, I've recently run into an issue because some of our new values for this filter contain : in them. I.e: cf=MO_AspectRatio:16:10 The value is being UrlEncoded, but the browsers are de-coding %3a into : on the fly because the : doesn't inherently break the urls. I need some suggestions for url-safe delimiters that aren't :,-,_,&,? that makes sense. I'm not looking for a solution like () or something wild.

  If you have a simple Linq query like: var result = from record in db.Customer select new { Text = record.Name, Value = record.ID.ToString() }; which is returning an object that can be mapped to a Drop Down List, is it possible to dynamically specify which fields map to Text and Value? Of course, you could do a big case (switch) statement, then code each Linq query separately but this isn't very elegant. What would be nice would be something like: (pseudo code) var myTextField = db.Customer["Name"]; // Could be an enumeration?? var myValueField = db.Customer["ID"]; // Idea: choose the field outside the query var result = from record in db.Customer select new { Text = myTextField, Value = myValueField };

• Ruby on Rails: strange voting increment behavior

  So I have an up and a downvote button that inserts a vote with a value of 1 or -1 into the database. This works correctly. Then, I display the total vote count for that element by summing up its votes' values. However, this isn't working correctly, because the vote sum display is acting really strange: The first vote on a video doesn't seem to increment it at all. Then the second vote does. If I go from an upvote to a downvote, it increments up once, and then the next downvote is down. This is difficult to explain, but maybe you can figure out what is wrong with my code.   I have a small app I'm working on where I'm trying to use Django's built in filesizeformat. Currently, the format looks like this: {{ value|filesizeformat }} I understand I need to define this in my view.py file but, I can't seem to figure out how to do that. I've tried to use the syntax below: def filesizeformat(bytes): """ Formats the value like a 'human-readable' file size (i.e. 13 KB, 4.1 MB, 102 bytes, etc). """ try: bytes = float(bytes) except (TypeError,ValueError,UnicodeDecodeError): return u"0 bytes" if bytes < 1024: return ungettext("%(size)d byte", "%(size)d bytes", bytes) % {'size': bytes} if bytes < 1024 * 1024: return ugettext("%.1f KB") % (bytes / 1024) if bytes < 1024 * 1024 * 1024: return ugettext("%.1f MB") % (bytes / (1024 * 1024)) return ugettext("%.1f GB") % (bytes / (1024 * 1024 * 1024)) filesizeformat.is_safe = True I've then replaced 'value' with 'bytes' in the template but, this does not seem to work. • Chnaging Displayed Image on a Webpage Using Javascript

  Hi all, I'm having some trouble changing an image being displayed on a page by way of a dropdown menu selection. This works fine.. getting the dropdown menu to give me an alert when I make a selection. Even though the menu is embedded within a division, paragraph, and label tag, it still works. "availableImages" is the name of my menu. function imageSelect() { var index = document.getElementById("myForm").availableImages.selectedIndex; var value = document.getElementById("myForm").availableImages.options[index].value; alert("test " + value); // alert box pops up upon list item selection } However, within the same division, I am having an issue with changing the source of my image tag...
