• TransportWithMessageCredential & Service Bus – Introduction

  Recently we have been working on a project using the Windows Azure Service Bus to expose line of business applications. One of the topics we discussed a lot was around the security aspects of the solution. Most of the samples you see for Windows Azure Service Bus often use the shared secret with the Access Control Service to protect the service bus endpoint but one of the problems we found was that with this scenario any claims resulting from credentials supplied by the client are not passed through to the service listening to the service bus endpoint. As an example of this we originally were hoping that we could give two different clients their own shared secret key and the issuer for each would indicate which client it was. If the claims had flown to the listening service then we could check that the message sent by client one was a type they are allowed to send. Unfortunately this claim isn't flown to the listening service so we were unable to implement this scenario. We had also seen samples that talk about changing the relayClientAuthenticationType attribute would allow you to authenticate the client within the service itself rather than with ACS. While this was interesting it wasn't exactly what we wanted. By removing the step where access to the Relay endpoint is protected by authentication against ACS it means that anyone could send messages via the service bus to the on-premise listening service which would then authenticate clients. In our scenario we certainly didn't want to allow clients to skip the ACS authentication step because this could open up two attack opportunities for an attacker. The first of these would allow an attacker to send messages through to our on-premise servers and potentially cause a denial of service situation. The second case would be with the same kind of attack by running lots of messages through service bus which were then rejected the attacker would be causing us to incur charges per message on our Windows Azure account. The correct way to implement our desired scenario is to combine one of the common options for authenticating against ACS so the service bus endpoint cannot be accessed by an unauthenticated caller with the normal WCF security features using the TransportWithMessageCredential security option. Looking around I could not find any guidance on how to implement this correctly so on the back of setting this up I decided to write a couple of articles to walk through a couple of the common scenarios you may be interested in. • BizTalk Orchestration & Port Tutorial Part 2

  In Part 1 I showed how to create and publish a simple Orchestration demo. Now we’ll finish configuring it in the admin console and test it. Open the BizTalk Server 2009 Administration Console, and expand BizTalk Server 2009 Administration, then Applications. You should have an entry for OrchestrationPortDemo – expand it as well. First, we’ll add the Receive Port – the place that we’ll drop the test file. Right-click on Receive Ports and select New One-way Receive Port. On the General tab, name it InputPort, then click over to Receive Locations.   Click New to add a new location. Your receive location can be FTP, SQL, WCF, SharePoint, or many other choices, but for this demo we’ll add a File location. Click the Configure button and set a receive folder (something like “C:\PortDemo\”) and a file mask (stick with “*.xml” for now) and click OK three times to create your Receive Port.   Next we’ll create the Send port – the location where BizTalk will drop the file. Right-click on Send Ports and choose New Static One-way Send Port. Give it an appropriate name, and configure the FILE Transport Properties as shown:   Click OK twice and your Send Port will be created. Now we’ll configure the Orchestration Bindings. Click on Orchestrations, then right-click the orchestration itself and select Properties. Select the Bindings tab. Choose BizTalkServerApplication as the host, and select the Send and Receive ports you previously created, as shown:   Now it’s time to fire everything up. Right-click on the send port you created and click Start. Once the Status column displays “Started”, click on Receive Locations and Enable the Receive Location previously created. Finally, start the Orchestration. Now, time to test! Create a simple xml file like: <root>    <Node1>Test</Node1>    <Node2>Test</Node2> </root> And drop it into the C:\PortDemo folder. After a couple of seconds the file should disappear – this indicates BizTalk has picked it up for processing. Look in the C:\PortDemo\Output folder and you should see an xml file with a GUID for a name, like {7C50104F-FC3E-4A49-B2FA-4F560A37636D}.xml. Open it to verify that it matches your input file. Practically, this demo doesn’t do a whole heck of a lot, but it shows you the basics for building, publishing and running an orchestration.

• Weird vps server issue

  I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop. • HowTo import Certificate (pfx) with private key in WinXP

  Hello, I tried the whole day just to import a cetrificate in winXP, but I allways failed. I did following: Create the certificate with private key (no pasword): makecert -sr LocalMachine -ss My -pe -sky exchange -n "CN=TestCert" -a sha1 -sv TestCert.pvk TestCert.cer Then put certificate and private key together into pfx file: pvk2pfx.exe -pvk TestCert.pvk -spc TestCert.cer -pfx TestCert.pfx Import pfx file with commandline tool (German System): winhttpcertcfg.exe -i TestCert.pfx -a NT-AUTORITÄT\NETZWERKDIENST -c LOCAL_MACHINE\My Error: Unable to import contents of PFX file. Please make sure the filename and path, as well as the password, are correct. Hint: "NT-AUTORITÄT\NETZWERKDIENST" -- "NT-AUTHORITY\NETWORKSERVICE" Filename is ok, password was not set. Even if I set the password (e.g. "MyPassword") in Step 1 and type at the end of step 3: ... -p MyPassword I got the same error. Then I tried to import in the certificate console (mmc with certificate snap-in). There i got following error: "Der private Schlüssel, den Sie importieren, erfordert möglicherweise einen Dienstanbieter, der nicht installiert ist." -- "The imported private key may requires a service-supplier which is not installed". But the Microsoft Crypto-Service is up and running. What else can I do? On Windows Vista and Windows 7 I got this running without these problems. I need this Certificate to run a WCF Service.   Last week I was fortunate enough to spend time in Redmond on Microsoft’s campus for the 2011 Microsoft MVP Summit. It was great to hang out with a number of old friends and get the opportunity to talk tech with the various product teams up at Microsoft. The weather wasn’t exactly sunny but Microsoft always does a great job with the Summit and everyone had a blast (heck, I even got to run the bases at SafeCo field) While much of what we saw is covered under NDA, there a ton of great things in the pipeline from Microsoft and many things that are already available (or just became so) that I wasn’t necessarily aware of. The purpose of this post is to share some of the info I learned on resources and tools available to .NET developers today. Please let me know if you have any questions (or if you know of something else cool which might benefit others). Enjoy! Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Microsoft has issued the RTM release of Visual Studio 2010 SP1. You can download the full SP1 on MSDN as of today (March 10th to the general public) and take advantage of such things as: Silverlight 4 is included in the box (as opposed to a separate install) Silverlight 4 Profiling WCF RIA Services SP1 Intellitrace for 64-bit and SharePoint ASP.NET now easily supports IIS Express and SQL CE Want a description of all that’s new beyond the above biased list (which arguably only contains items I think are important)? Check out this KB article. Portable Library Tools CTP Without much fanfare Microsoft has released a CTP of a new add-in to Visual Studio 2010 which simplifies code sharing between projects targeting different runtimes (i.e. Silverlight, WPF, Win7 Phone, XBox). With this Add-In installed you can add a new project of type “Portable Library” and specify which platforms you wish to target. Once that is done, any code added to this library will be limited to use only features which are common to all selected frameworks. Other projects can now reference this portable library and be provided assemblies custom built to their environment. This greatly simplifies the current process of sharing linked files between platforms like WPF and Silverlight. You can find out more about this CTP and how it works on this great blog post. Visual Studio Async CTP Microsoft has also released a CTP of a set of language and framework enhancements to provide a much more powerful asynchronous programming model. Due to the focus on async programming in all types of platforms (and it being the ONLY option in Silverlight and Win7 phone) a move towards a simpler and more understandable model is always a good thing. This CTP (called Visual Studio Async CTP) can be downloaded here. You can read more about this CTP on this blog post. MSDN Code Samples Gallery Microsoft has also launched new code samples gallery on their MSDN site: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/. This site allows you to easily search for small samples of code related to a particular technology or platform. If a sample of code you are looking for is not found, you can request one via the site and other developers can see your request and provide a sample to the site to suit your needs. You can also peruse requested samples and, if you find a scenario where you can provide value, upload your own sample for the benefit of others. Samples are packaged into the VS .vsix format and include any necessary references/dependencies. By using .vsix as the deployment mechanism, as samples are installed from the site they are kept in your Visual Studio 2010 Samples Gallery and kept for your future reference. If you get a chance, check out the site and see how it is done. Although a somewhat simple concept, I was very impressed with their implementation and the way they went about trying to suit a need. I’ll definitely be looking there in the future as need something or want to share something. MSDN Search Capabilities Another item I learned recently and was not aware of (that might seem trivial to some) is the power of the MSDN site’s search capabilities. Between the Code Samples Gallery described above and the search enhancements on MSDN, Microsoft is definitely investing in their platform to help provide developers of all skill levels the tools and resources they need to be successful. What do I mean by the MSDN search capability and why should you care? If you go to the MSDN home page (http://msdn.microsoft.com) and use the “Search MSDN with Big” box at the very top of the page you will see some very interesting results. First, the search actually doesn’t just search the MSDN library it searches: MSDN Library All Microsoft Blogs CodePlex StackOverflow Downloads MSDN Magazine Support Knowledgebase (I’m not sure it even ends there but the above are all I know of) Beyond just searching all the above locations, the results are formatted very nicely to give some contextual information based on where the result came from. For example, if a keyword search returned results from CodePlex, each row in the search results screen would include a large amount of information specific to CodePlex such as: Looking at the above results immediately tells you everything from the page views to the CodePlex ratings. All in all, knowing that this much information is indexed and available from a single search location will lead me to utilize this as one of my initial searches for development information.

• Cannot start listening on a certain TCP port, but there's nothing currently listening on it

  I have Windows Service that uses a WCF service host to listen for connections on TCP port 61000. When I try to start the service, I get the error: Service cannot be started. System.ServiceModel.AddressAlreadyInUseException: HTTP could not register URL http://+:61000/ because TCP port 61000 is being used by another application. ---> System.Net.HttpListenerException: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process at System.Net.HttpListener.AddAll() at System.Net.HttpListener.Start() at System.ServiceModel.Channels.SharedHttpTransportManager.OnOpen() --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at System.ServiceModel.Channels.SharedHttpTransportManager.OnOpen() at System.ServiceModel.Channels.TransportManager.Open(TransportChannelListener channelListener) at System.ServiceModel.Channels.TransportManagerContainer.Open(SelectTransportManagersCallback selectTransportManagerCallback) at System.ServiceModel.Channels.HttpChannelListener.OnOpen(TimeSpan timeout) at System.ServiceModel.Channels.CommunicationObject.Open(TimeSpan timeout) at System.ServiceModel.Dispatcher.ChannelDispatcher.OnOpen(TimeSpan timeout) at... A quick netstat -a shows there is nothing listening on port 61000. I've also found several posts online that mention reserving namespaces using netstat, but the account that the service runs under has administrator privileges so that shouldn't be necessary. Any other ideas as to why I'm getting this message? This service is running on 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.

• What should I do to make sure that IIS does not recycle my application?

  I have a WCF service app hosted in IIS. On startup, it goes and fetches a really expensive (in terms of time and cpu) resource to use as local cache. Unfortunately, IIS seems to recycle the process on a fairly regular basis. So I am trying to change the settings on the Application Pool to make sure that IIS does not recycle the application. So far, I've change the following: Limit Interval under CPU from 5 to 0. Idle Time-out under Process Model from 20 to 0. Regular Time Interval under Recycling from 1740 to 0. Will this be enough? And I have specific questions about the items I changed: What specifically does Limit Interval setting under CPU mean? Does it mean that if a certain CPU usage is exceeded, the application pool will be recycled? What exactly does "recycled" mean? Is the application completely torn down and started up again? What is the difference between "Worker Process shutdown" and "Application Pool recycling"? The documentation for the Idle Time-out under Process Model talks about shutting down the worker process. While the docs for Regular Time Interval under Recycling talk about application pool recycling. I don't quite grok the difference between the two. I thought the w3wp.exe is the worker process which runs the application pool. Can someone explain the difference to the application between the two? The reason for having IIS7 and IIS7.5 tags is because the app will run in both and hope the answers are the same between the versions. Image for reference:

• Does IIS Sometimes Allocate More Worker Processes Than Configured?

  We have an IIS 7.5 web service on Windows Server 2008 that handles WCF requests from C# clients. This service is configured to have Maximum Worker Processes = 1, so it is not a web garden. IIS is setup to recycle itself at the same time every day (3 AM). I am trying to debug gnarly connection issues, so I wanted to be sure the application pool was not recycling itself. I configured the pool to log an event when it recycles itself. To my surprise, I see the following entries in the System event log: Level: Information Date/Time: 3/23/2012 3:00:00 AM - Source: WAS - Event ID: 5076 A worker process with process id of '6636' serving application pool 'MyAppPool' has requested a recycle because it reached its scheduled recycle time. Level: Information Date/Time: 3/23/2012 2:59:39 AM - Source: WAS - Event ID: 5076 A worker process with process id of '9364' serving application pool 'MyAppPool' has requested a recycle because it reached its scheduled recycle time. IIS is correctly recycling the application pool at 3 AM. However, I do not understand why I would be getting two recycle events in the log within a few seconds of each other. The maximum number of processes is 1. Does IIS sometimes allocate multiple processes for an application pool that is specified as having 1 process? -- edit -- I connected at about 4 PM today and only saw 1 w3wp.exe process. There are no other event log entries that would indicate a crash.

• MS Dynamics CRM users disappear

  Recently we came across quite a weird issue. The administrators say that once in a while they notice that user accounts in MS Dynamics CRM are lost . When a new user is added to the system, the administrators add him/her to the Active Directory first. Then, they go to Dynamics CRM interface, then to system configuration -> administration -> users and add the new user to the CRM, add roles to this user, grant them relevant permissions. Then the user is able to use a custom application, which connects to the Dynamics CRM via WCF. After a while (few weeks or months) the user is unable to use the custom application because Dynamics CRM cannot authorise this user. When administrators open the Dynamics CRM user management interface (configuration -> administration -> users ) and browse through the list of CRM users they cannot find the user in the list. When they try to add the user to Dynamics CRM back, the CRM fails with the error message "User already exists". Moreover, the user still exists in the Active Directory. The admins are very sure the user had been added to the CRM before he/she started to work. The only fact the the user was able to use the custom application normally says that the user had been indeed registered in the CRM. How come the user is not listed in the CRM user management interface at all? Have anyone faced any issues like that? Seen or heard of disappearing CRM users somewhere? Any help is appreciated. Where can one start digging?

• javax.ejb.NoSuchEJBException after redeploying EJBs

  Using Glassfish 3.0.1 ... If I have a web application accessing EJBs in another application remotely, and the remote application containing the EJBs is redeployed, I get a javax.ejb.NoSuchEJBException (see stacktrace below). Shouldn't this work? I can see that the EJB in question was successfully deployed, using the exact same JNDI name. Is there any other way to fix this than to restart the web application?   I'm trying to build a Google map application but keep receiving this in my LogCat. I have all the permissions and meta-data set in my manifest, but am still dumbfounded by this error. Have looked everywhere on SO for this specific error but found nothing relating to com.google.android.gms.checkin A little bit about my structural hierarchy. MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity with three tabs underneath actionbar. Each tab has it's own fragment. On the gMapFragment I create a GPSTrack object from my GPSTrack class which extends Service and implements LocationListener. The problem is that when I start the application I get this message: I have all my libraries imported properly and I even added the google-play-services.jar into my libs folder. I also installed Google Play Services APKs through CMD onto my emulator. Furthermore the LocationManager lm = = (LocationManager) mContext.getSystemService(LOCATION_SERVICE); in my GPSTrack class always returns null. Why is this and how can I fix these issues? • Copied Netbeans IDE Maven Web project failes to compile

  If I am going to make serious changes to my project I like to make a copy (right click project and select copy). I have created copies of my projects many times (maven web applications included) without issue. Now all I do is copy the project making no changes, leaving the copy settings on default (project name etc) and then try to run it and spring decides to take issue with it. Again I try running the original and it works. I deleted the faulty copy, restarted and tried again and still it does not work. • SSH tunneling with Synology

  I try to tunnel SMB and AFP services through SSH to acces my NAS shares on my machine. I already do it successfully with my ReadyNAS using the following command line (ran as my user on my mac) : ssh -Nf -p 22 -c 3des-cbc USER@SERVER -L 8888/127.0.0.1/548 -L 9999/127.0.0.1/139 but I cannot reproduce the same with the Synology NAS. Connecting using this command gives me the following error : channel 4: open failed: administratively prohibited: open failed I also tried with a windows client (used bitvise tunneler): it works with the ReadyNAS but not the Synology and get the following error msg : server denied request for client-side server-2-client forwarding on 127.0.0.1:139 I modified /etc/ssh/sshd_config : MaxSessions 10 PasswordAuthentication yes PermitEmptyPasswords no AllowTcpForwarding yes GatewayPorts yes PermitTunnel yes Is there any way to make it work ? I must add that I can successfully connect via SSH to the NAS so I donnot think this is a firewall issue between the Synology and my computer. Thanks for you answers

• VMWare Server 2 Install is Failing w/ Error 25032: "failed to customize windows logon process"

  VMWare Server 2 install question here.* Straightforward question that would probably require a VMWare expert to pull apart, given that Google has been totally worthless on this. On a patched Windows XP machine, any attempt to install VMWare Server 2.0.1 results in failure, just prior to completion (progress bar is full but I can tell network adapter stuff hasn't been fired yet and most of the services haven't been instaled). The error: Error 25032. Failed to customize Windows logon process (). Please contact your administrator. Upon dismissing the error, you're treated to: Warning 25033. Failed to remove Windows logon customization (VMGINA.DLL). Please contact your administrator. Clicking "OK" rolls back your installation. Killing the installer and hoping that it somehow leaves a working install behind was also unproductive. *I hope install troubleshooting isn't outside the purview of serverfault, I'm typically an SO user.

  The following error is preventing me from cloning a Windows 7 64bit computer. Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754754 (0x80042302) I'm using VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone Client 4.0.1. Any ideas on what might be causing this? When I checked the services running, I noticed that the Volume Shadow Copy Service was set to manual. So I started the service and switched it to automatic. It still didn't work after that. I checked the event logs and I got the following errors: Event ID: 22 Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered. This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider. • Sharepoint 2010, 404 error after installation

  Running Windows Server 2008 Standard R2, SQL Server 2008 Enterprise, Team Foundation Server 2010, I installed Sharepoint Server 2010 (single server). It installed correctly, and the wizard configured it without errors. When accessing the sharepoint server through http://localhost/ I get a 404 error. I also get a 404 when trying to access the admin interface on port 42620. Sharepoint, TFS and Reporting services are the only application on my IIS. NOT sharing the same port, so that can't be the error. Do you have any ideas what the problem can be? Is there some way that I can debug this?

  Microsoft Active Directory Federation Services 2.0 has been recently released, and it has passed interoperability tests for SAML 2.0. Does this mean that is can be used to authenticate users of Google Apps which also uses SAML? Has anyone successfully setup Google apps with ADFS 2.0 for single sign on? If you have gotten it to work please tell us what is required to get this working? To put it another way, does someone have a good HOWTO for using ADFS 2.0 and Google Apps together? I was not able to find anything through a search of the web.

  I've seen this issue floating around the net the last few weeks and I'm facing exactly the same issue. My servers are set to auto install updates using Windows update (not clever, I know), and since about 2 months ago, I've been getting strange Exceptions. The first thing that happens is that MMC.exe just crashes randomly and sometimes on startup of the console. The exception in the Windows Application log is as follow: Faulting application name: mmc.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bc808 Faulting module name: mscorwks.dll, version: 2.0.50727.5448, time stamp: 0x4e153960 Secondly, on the same server, I have some custom Windows services which constantly crash with exceptions : Faulting application name: Myservice.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f44cb11 Faulting module name: clr.dll, version: 4.0.30319.239, time stamp: 0x4e181a6d Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000378aa The exception is not in my code. • Web server connection to SQL Server: Response Packet [Malformed Packet]

  I am seeing very, very sluggish performance between my web server (which handles HTTP web services connections) and a separate server running Microsoft SQL Server 2008. I have been capturing packet traffic on the web server trying to understand why things are running so slowly. I am using Wireshark to capture the packet traffic. The apparent problem is that the web server is sending TDS packets to the data server--each packet followed by a response from the data server with Response Packet [Malformed Packet] in the Info field. The packet sent from the web server appears to have an invalid checksum. Has anyone seen this type of problem before? Any ideas?

  Hello everyone, I have a client who wants to ensure his upload is secure, so we are trying to enable SFTP for him on our Linux PLESK server. I have enabled SSH access to bin/bash for FTP accounts, and created a new user. When I attempt to SFTP using either the IP address or the domain name, this is the error FileZilla is giving me: Error: Authentication failed. Error: Critical error Error: Could not connect to server Here is some basic information regarding the server: Operating system Linux 2.6.24.5-20080421a Plesk Control Panel version psa v8.6.0_build86080930.03 os_CentOS 5 I had read in some places that I should reboot the SSH Service in Server - Services, however, there is no SSH Service within the list. I'm not really a server guy so it's quite possible I'm missing something obvious. Thanks for any help that you guys can provide!

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Accessing NFS share without AD or NIS

  I'm trying to mount an NFS share on our NetApp SAN on Windows 2008 R2. Using XP I have no problem mounting this share without a username/NIS/pswd file etc, but the new functionality in 2008 seems to insist on either using AD or an NIS server (to "streamline" Services for NFS MS removed user account mapping) see Technet. When I go to map the share using "map network drive" no combination of "root", no username, no password, my username works. Using the command line mount -o anon \\172... :n or mount -o -u:root \\172... :n either gives me a network error 53 or 67 error Is it possible with 2008 to mount an NFS share without AD or NIS? If so what am I doing wrong? (Security is taken care off by IP address permissions and VLANs)
