• Raspberry Pi and Java SE: A Platform for the Masses

  One of the more exciting developments in the embedded systems world has been the announcement and availability of the Raspberry Pi, a very capable computer that is no bigger than a credit card.  At $35 US, initial demand for the device was so significant, that very long back orders quickly ensued. After months of patiently waiting, mine finally arrived.  Those initial growing pains appear to have been fixed, so availability now should be much more reasonable. At a very high level, here are some of the important specs: Broadcom BCM2835 System on a chip (SoC) ARM1176JZFS, with floating point, running at 700MHz Videocore 4 GPU capable of BluRay quality playback 256Mb RAM 2 USB ports and Ethernet Boots from SD card Linux distributions (e.g. Debian) available So what's taking place taking place with respect to the Java platform and Raspberry Pi? A Java SE Embedded binary suitable for the Raspberry Pi is available for download (Arm v6/7) here.  Note, this is based on the armel architecture, a variety of Arm designed to support floating point through a compatibility library that operates on more platforms, but can hamper performance.  In order to use this Java SE binary, select the available Debian distribution for your Raspberry Pi. The more recent Raspbian distribution is based on the armhf (hard float) architecture, which provides for more efficient hardware-based floating point operations.  However armhf is not binary compatible with armel.  As of the writing of this blog, Java SE Embedded binaries are not yet publicly available for the armhf-based Raspbian distro, but as mentioned in Henrik Stahl's blog, an armhf release is in the works. As demonstrated at the just-completed JavaOne 2012 San Francisco event, the graphics processing unit inside the Raspberry Pi is very capable indeed, and makes for an excellent candidate for JavaFX.  As such, plans also call for a Pi-optimized version of JavaFX in a future release too. A thriving community around the Raspberry Pi has developed at light speed, and as evidenced by the packed attendance at Pi-specific sessions at Java One 2012, the interest in Java for this platform is following suit. • nomachine NX: Text missing on all gtk interface (Unity and Gnome Classic)

  [Edit] I later realized my issue only occurs when I am using NX to remote access my machine. Therefore I edited the title and description. I have also found the temp solution, which is to "disable render extension" in the custom display settings. But doing so makes the NX experience very slow laggy, and not that nice to look at. [/EDIT] I did a fresh install on a new computer, and was trying to setup my fonts. When I log in remotely via NX, my the text are missing on all gtk based interfaces. That means most menues (except for unity), right click menues, applications themselves, terminal, and so on. About the only thing unaffected is firefox. all the texts are showing just fine for firefox. So that probably already says something about text permissions. I went to check if my fonts have the correct permissions and they do. I removed my custom settings from /etc/fonts/config.d, and still the texts are missing. There is a work around by using "disable render extension" in the custom display settings. How do I fix this issue permanently?

• Missing driver ASUS PCE-N53 11n N600 PCI-E Adapter

  I have problems with getting an Asus PCE-N53 11n N600 PCI-E Adapter card to work on my desktop computer. As far as I can tell no drivers are installed for the card. I know I can manually download the drivers directly from Asus, but I would rather not go that route. If there are anyone that knows about any packages or other things I can do to make this work would be much appreciated. Some systems details: $ lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. • Downloading videos from a flash website

  There are those plugins that can capture flash videos from websites like Youtube and others. There's also the browsing cache which keeps the videos and I can copy them somewhere else and have them stored on my computer. I know of these, but how can I download a video from a website that (I think) is all flash because the address doesn't change wherever you navigate to and so it stays the same when you play a video that's on the website? No plugin I've tried (realplayer, ant video downloadr, IDM) have worked with it and nothing gets cached from that website.

• USB port not recognising mouse on first bootup

  On a computer here when first powered on the USB wired mouse is not recognised. The light under the mouse is not lit up. Other usb hub's and keyboards work fine. Disconnecting it and reconnecting it fixes the issue, even after a restart - after the pc is switched off for a length of time (for example overnight) the problem reappears. I swapped the mouse, updated the bios and installed updated intellimouse drivers, turned of power saving on the usb ports. Any ideas?

• Cannot terminate proces: access is denied

  Skype and Spotify remain active after I close them. When I try to close them via Task Manager Details End Task, I get the following error: The operation could not be completed. Access is denied. So I have to reboot to get rid of these programs or to log in to Skype again. Also, running a CMD as administrator and executing taskkill /f /im skype.exe results in an Access is denied error. What is going on? (this is Windows 8 RTM x64) update I have to kill skype.exe because it crashed and when I restart skype, I get the following error: It says: Could not open Skype, you are already signed in on this computer. update 2 The process is owned by my own username.

• Is ActionScript 3 used by Serious Indie Developers?

  This question is for dedicated independent game developers: My dream is to be a game developer. I am a senior in high school who has taken Computer Science for all four years. I have used Java the whole time, but last year I started using PHP and ActionScript 3 (with Flixel). I also used Game Maker for a brief period. I apologize for this, I wanted to get that out of the way and clarify the fact that I have experience of some kind with game development. I am stuck at the moment because I don't quite know what language to use to develop games at a professional level. I am seriously interested in becoming a dedicated game developer, but this issue is really bothering me. I would like to know what the best option would be for my case, based on your experiences. Any advice is appreciated. Things to consider: I am only interested in making 2D games (I am not worried about 3D support) It would be ideal to use something that can be ported to multiple platforms (so as not to run into this problem later) I can't seem to figure out what the industry likes to use So far, this is what I have: I can't decide if it would be wise to stick with ActionScript 3, or move to C++ I know Flash would be for browser games, but what if I want to make a downloadable game, like Plants Vs. Zombies or Super Crate Box? Would Flash be a smart choice for standalone games, or did they use something else? Thank you for reading this, as I would like to stop worrying about this and make some games! • Boot from external usb hdd won't work in 12.04

  I've been running 10.04 on an external USB HDD without problems for years. I installed 12.04 on an external USB HDD and it worked until I upgraded to all the new packages. But after that it wouldn't boot. I just got into the grub prompt. So then I tried installing on the disk inside the computer and that worked fine. But when I take it out and use it as an external USB HDD I just get: error: hd0 out of disk. grub rescue> How can I fix this? So why do I want this you might wonder? Well I have a laptop at home and a somewhat similar at work. And I just move the disk between them and don't have to move a heavy laptop. So I really hope I can continue doing this with 12.04! The old disk is only 80Gb but the new one is 320Gb (7200rpm Toshiba). I'm using 12.04 on a 64Gb SSD as an external drive and it warns about out of disk but it boots anyway most of the times.

• Problem deleting folder and files from "Program Files" folder in Win 7

  How do you delete folders and files from the "Program Files" folder in Win 7? I am trying to do this on someone else's computer and I don't know what rights their user account is. It says that I don't have permission to delete the folder. I thought it was an administrator account because when I do "Run as Administrator" for other things it doesn't ask for a password, so it must be an administrator account. Should I be able to delete a folder out of "Program Files" if the account has administrator rights? Or do I need to do something else, such as "Take Ownership" of the folder.

• Using PowerShell, in Active Direcotry, how would I change all the DNS A records that have a given IP to a new IP?

  We've been moving data centers and I have a lot of old records that were not correctly but in DNS as CNAME records, but A records that have a direct IP (e.g. 192.168.100.n) and they're all moving to a new subnet (10.19.100.n). I just need to write a powershell script to change all those records. I don't understand how to iterate over all the entries in each of the zones. Also, all the examples I've seen involve adding new zones, but there aren't any examples I can find on modifying existing A records.

• Extending C drive not possible

  This is my computer partition list. You can see my C drive is running very low on disk space. I wanted to extend my disk space, so I used mmc Disk managment to shrink a volume, but I can't extend it to the C drive because the extended volume in dropdown list of C is not clickable. I've tried many packages, but none were able to do it. My C drive is simple, basic, NTFS, healthy (boot, crash dump, primary partition). The MMC Windows: What should I do?

• File permissions issue with an NFSv4 share, uploaded from a Mac Lion

  I have an NFSv4 share that was working fine, with Macs using Snow Leopard, to share files across the network. The NFS share has one cloned user/group that all clients autoconnect as. However, when I use a Lion Mac to copy a file from their user directory to the NFS, no other computer (mac SL/mac Lion/Win7) can edit/delete/write to the file that was uploaded - despite having the correct read/write/ex permissions visible on the NFS and through terminal. Attempting to edit the file permissions through Finder completely locks the file. I suspect this has something to do with Lion's ACLs (or maybe its version control) conflicting with NFSv4. Is there a way to disable or ignore extended ACLs or extended file permissions on the NFSv4 side, that would allow users to not run into this conflict? The work around currently is to use NFS Manager and set automounts to ignore ownership but installing NFS manager and configuring automounts for all of the computers seems more troubling than attempting to reconfigure the NFS settings. Advice?

• OS X Snow Leopard, change file permissions on copy

  I work with OS X, Snow Leopard and need to allow users to make copies of files (templates) located in a read-only repository for subsequent editing. The repository is located on a separate physical drive mounted to the OS X boot volume. As this is a shared computer in a school environment, all users access the machine via a single login ("user_local"). Whether using POSIX permissions or ACLs, the use case requires the file permissions to change from "read" to "read write" as they get copied to the "user_local" home directory. Googling around has not yielded anything that would indicate that this is possible via the Snow Leopard permission system. Question 1: Is this in fact possible via the permission system? If so, how? Question 2: If not possible, how would one go about solving this problem? I imagine this to be a fairly common use case so there must be a workable solution for it out there. Thanks.

  Hi I have a domain controller that I have installed active directory onto and have set up an account that I want to use for my SQL server installation on another computer that is linked onto the domain. I can search for the account in active directory and I am able to select it into the add new user section in MSSMS, however, when I click add I get 'Windows NT user or group 'DOMAIN\user' not found. Check the name again. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15401) I have googled the Error code and I havent found a solution that has fixed the error. If you have any help I would be greatful Thanks :)

• Installed 4GB memory but Windows XP 32 bit only reporting 2GB?

  I've just taken an existing XP Pro 32 bit system that had only 0.5GB of memory installed and maxed it out to 4GB. The BIOS reports the 4GB ram however when XP is booted and I look at the computer properties only 2GB of RAM is reported. Can anyone explain this? Before we go up any blind allys the /3GB switch is not the answer here, I have no need for a single process to use more the 2GB of memory. I'm wondering if the the 32 bit XP Pro is deliberately limited to 2GB. I seem to remember seeing an excellent table on a Microsoft site listing all the various SKUs of Windows and what each one was limited to. However I can't seem to find that table now.

• PS/2 vs USB keyboards: performance and energy consumption

  As far as I know, PS/2 keyboards are interrupt driven, while USB are polled. Typically a PS/2 keyboard was assigned IRQ_1 on Windows. I'm no hardware expert, but at a first glance seems like the PS/2 keyboards are more efficient. So here are my questions: On modern day computers, are PS/2 keyboard better (or faster), and if so, would it be noticeable at all? (e.g.: in gaming) Since they don't need polling, do PS/2 keyboards save energy compared to USB? (notice I'm not talking only about the peripheral here, but about the overall computer energy consumption). In case PS/2 had any advantage over USB, would adding a PS/2 adapter to my USB keyboard make the device as good as an actual PS/2 keyboard? Conversely, would adding a USB adapter to a PS/2 make it as bad as a USB KB? Thanks in advance.

• Analyzing Memory Usage: Java vs C++ Negligible?

  How does the memory usage of an integer object written in Java compare\contrast with the memory usage of a integer object written in C++? Is the difference negligible? No difference? A big difference? I'm guessing it's the same because an int is an int regardless of the language (?) The reason why I asked this is because I was reading about the importance of knowing when a program's memory requirements will prevent the programmer from solving a given problem. What fascinated me is the amount of memory required for creating a single Java object. Take for example, an integer object. Correct me if I'm wrong but a Java integer object requires 24 bytes of memory: 4 bytes for its int instance variable 16 bytes of overhead (reference to the object's class, garbage collection info & synchronization info) 4 bytes of padding As another example, a Java array (which is implemented as an object) requires 48+bytes: 24 bytes of header info 16 bytes of object overhead 4 bytes for length 4 bytes for padding plus the memory needed to store the values How do these memory usages compare with the same code written in C++? I used to be oblivious about the memory usage of the C++ and Java programs I wrote, but now that I'm beginning to learn about algorithms, I'm having a greater appreciation for the computer's resources.

  My computer specs: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3 OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate CPU Socket: LGA775 CPU: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4300 (2M Cache, 1.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) After I bought new hard drive (Western Digital 250GB, 7200rpm, 32MB, Sata III, Caviar Blue, WD2500AAKX) I saw that my processor temperature started to raise to higher value then before. Now while surfing internet it goes to 70°C. Cleaned my motherboard - nothing; cleaned fan - nothing; replaced thermal paste - nothing; replaced thermal paste with care - still nothing. So I went to friend just to check if he doesn't have any spear fan, and he did. But with fan he had another processor that he didn't need and he wanted to give it to me, but I told him that I will think about this. So my CPU, he's CPU (Intel® Pentium® D Processor 820 (2M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)). Question: which proccesor is better for gaming and for recording games?

• Stacks in C++

  So some more basics… One of the things you will be taught at any college after conquering arrays is different derivatives of collections. Stack is one of the simplest of those and very useful… A stack is a LIFO (last in first out) data structure and has at least two basic method calls – push & pop. Push, “pushes” an item on the top of the stack. Pop, removes the top most item off the stack. Because all elements on a stack are of the same type, one can use an array to implement a stack or a linked list. With the array based approach, the first element in a stack would be the first element in the array, the second on the stack would be the second on the array, etc. One limitation with an array implementation of a stack is that unless the array is dynamic, one would have to have a preset max stack size (based on the bounds of the array). Linked lists is another approach that gets past this boundary by allowing you to dynamically grow or shrink a collection of data. Stacks have many applications… a typical computer science example would be Postfix Expression Calculator, where the LIFO principle is maintained.

• how can I discover what keys are being sent when I press a mouse button?

  I'd like to map my Logitech MX Revolution keys in Visual Studio. More importantly, I'd like to do it without installing any software. Is this possible? I specifically want to map the two side buttons to View.NavigateBackward and View.NavigateForward. But I'm not sure what those keys are mapped to right now. I thought they were mapped to Ctrl-Tab and Shift-Ctrl-Tab, since they seem to behave that way in Notepad++, but that isn't working in VS. I'm on the work computer, which means 2 problems: I'm in Windows XP and installing software is frowned upon/monitored.

• Can't run Ubuntu from disc

  When I place the boot CD in my CD drive and boot from it, I get the Ubuntu menu. I have these options Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer Install Ubuntu Check disc for defects Test memory Boot from first hard disk I can use the cursor keys to select them, and I can push F1 for help etc. However, I can not select an option. I've highlighted the first and tried enter, space bar etc. I do have a KVM, so I plugged in a 2nd USB keyboard and tried it but no go either. I can push escape and then got to the prompt. Am I doing something wrong?

• Copssh, how to add users?

  I installed copssh on Windows Vista (64-bit) here, and the installation seemed to go fine. It requires you to explicitly add users to log in, which is fine, so I opened the COPSSH Control Panel (really just an app), went to the Users tab, clicked Add, Forward, and the "User:" popup is empty. The "Domain:" popup has exactly one entry: my computer name. The "Documentation" shortcut in the start menu group is broken, but I found the folder it's supposed to point to, and I only see docs for command-line tools (which I'll investigate next). Is there something I'm missing? Is the COPSSH Control Panel just plain broken?

• Trying to create a git repo that does an automatic checkout everytime someone updates origin

  Basically, I have a server with a git repo 'origin'. I'm trying to have another repo auto-pull from origin every time someone pushes code to it. I've been using the hooks in origin, specifically post-receive. So far, my post receive looks something like this: #!/bin/sh GIT_DIR=/home/<user>/<test_repo> git pull origin master But when I push to origin from another computer, I get the error: remote: fatal: Not a git repository: '/home/<user>/<test_repo>' However, test_repo most definitely is a git repo. I can cd into it and run 'git pull origin master' and it works fine. Is there an easier way to do what I'm trying to do? If not, what am I doing wrong with this approach? Thanks in advance. Edit, to clarify: The repo is a website in progress, and I'd like to have a version of it available at all times that is fully up to date.

• Radeon 4670 Card Has 2 DVI Outs But Only Works When One is used in Win7 x64

  I have an ATI XFX Radeon 4670 1GB video card in a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 setup. If I only use one monitor, all is well. If I plug in a second DVI cable to the card, both monitors go dark. I can get one or the other to display, but only when it is the only one plugged into the card. I'm really hoping for a dual-monitor setup here as that was the point of the card. I'm using ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series video drivers dated 11/24/09 (8.681.0.0) which are the latest from their site and are supposed to work with Vista or Win7 x64. When the computer boots with both displays connected, both monitors display the inital bios and boot screens. The Win7 splash screen also displays, but by the time it goes to the login screen, one monitor is offline.
