  • Synchronising a remote folder with a local one.

    I am using a network disk (that's connected to my router by USB) to store several data files. A simple .NET application that I've created is supposed to read and modify these data files. However, some security issues are preventing this application to access these files directly. (Actually, these have been built-in to my application on purpose since it's not going to support NAS disks.) Since this disk is shared with several computers, I just want to have a simple synchronisation method, which will copy the files to a local folder where3 my application can access them. And, once modified, it should send back the modified files to the NAS disk again. I have two options: 1) Build a second application to do my own synchronisation. 2) Find some build-in function inside Windows 7 Ultimate which can do this for me. Option 2 is preferred. Option 1 is something I can do easily, if need be. I don't need third-party tools. (Still, feel free to add some references to good tools, although I won't accept them as answers.) Basically, is this possible with Windows 7 and if so, how?

    In the Event Viewer in Windows 7 there is a Source column that is set by my Windows Service application. The value is set to TOS and usually when a log entry is associated to my application, it has TOS as the Source column value. However, when the service fails to start (or some other kind of error occurs) I get a Source of one of the following values: Application Error Service Control Manager .NET Runtime I don't understand why the value is not always TOS Also, is it possible to force it to use TOS every time?

  • Monitoring AWS Systems Behind ElasticBeanStalk

    So I'm getting a company set up in the Amazon Cloud -- creating IAAS protocol/solutions/standardized implementation, etc while also being the SysAdmin for individual systems, app environments, and day-to-day uptime. One of the biggest issues I'm having is tracking various system/application logs, as well as logging/monitoring/archiving system metrics like memory usage, cpu usage, etc etc In a centralized fashion. E.g. -- Nagios + Urchin. The BIGGEST impediment to my endeavors is the following: The company application is deployed in the form of a Java *.WAR file, uploaded to an Elastic BeanStalk application environment, load balancing and auto-scaling between 3(min) and 10(max) servers, and the EC2's that run the application are fired up and disposed of ad-hoc. That is to say, I can't monitor the individual EC2's for very long because so many are being terminated then auto-provisioned/auto-scaled on the fly -- so I'd constantly be having to "monitor what I'm monitoring", and continuously remove/add EC2 machine addresses to my monitoring lists. IS there some sort of way to use monitoring tools like Zabbix or Nagios to monitor the ElasticBeanStalk, and have it automatically add on new EC2's, and remove terminated/failed EC2's from its monitoring list automatically? Furthermore, is there anything I can do with GrayLog to achieve similar results with the aggregation/centralization of my application logs from multiple EC2 instances into ONE consolidated set of logs/events? If not GrayLog, is there ANYTHING LIKE GrayLog that can automatically detect what EC2 members are being added/removed from the environment, and collect the logs from them automatically?   • Very High Network out in ec2 instance

    I launched an ubuntu-14.04-64bit instance in Amazon EC2 two days back. And I started Tomcat 7.0.54 in that instance and deployed my application war files. It has no other software installed other than tomcat and the default ones. In the past 2 days, its shows 858 GB of Data Transfer(Network Out) from that instance. I have attached a graph of Amazon CloudWatch Metric "Network Out" My application does not do any data download/upload. Its a Java Spring application and the front end is in HTML&Javascript. My application traffic was very low (less than 20 hits) in those 2 days. Is there a way to find out why these data transfers happened and also to find what data has been transferred. If you can see in graph, network out was 20gb per minute. Some more info: Network in was negligible CPU Utilization was very high Everything else was low

  • Intel GMA 4500MHD flickering in opengl

    I have an application that uses OpenGL for its display. When this application is run on a laptop with an Intel GMA 4500MHD on Windows XP the OpenGL content appears to flicker/shudder between 2 frames. I have experienced the exact same problem when running this application on nVidia Quadro FX hardware, however with nVidia the problem can be corrected by disabling the "Unified Back Buffer" (UBB) feature in the driver. Does anybody know how I can disable the corresponding feature in the Intel driver?

  • Accessing localhost via IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 very slow

    (I've asked this over on stackoverflow already, but thought I'd ask here as well) I'm currently running an ASP.NET application on IIS 7.5 on Windows 7. When I access this application on Internet Explorer (either 6, 7 or 8) it is incredible slow and often fails to load at all. There are messages at the bottom saying: Waiting for http://localhost/....... or sometimes waiting for about:blank (I've read that this can be a virus, but I've run all the usual checks and it's not). constantly, but it returns with the usual: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" I've also tried this by using 127.0.0.1 and the machine name, with the same results. I've tried the same application on the latest Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera and they all work fine. I've also installed the same application on a Windows Server 2003 machine, and it all works fine via Internet Explorer. I've also turned off the IPv6 setting on the LAN connection. Soes anyone have any ideas why this doesn't work with Internet Explorer and yet does with other browsers?

    I currently have a relatively complicated application that sends emails via a nightly job through an SMTP server on Windows Server 2008. Is there a way to configure IIS/SMTP to send a copy of every email that's relayed to another email address? Essentially, can I add a BCC on the fly through IIS/SMTP configuration? Because of the complexity of the application, we would prefer to change the behavior this way if it's possible as opposed to making code changes to the application.

  • How to create an alias for a named SQL Server instance

    On my developer computer I have an SQL Server instance named *developer_2005*. In the resource setting files of a C# application we are creating, the instance name is set to foobar (not really, but just as an example). So when I run the application (in debug or realease) it tries to connect to an SQL Server on localhost, named foobar. I am wondering if it is possible to create an alias or something like that, so that the application actually finds an SQL Server on localhost named foobar, but it is actually connecting to the instance named *developer_2005*. The connection string in the config file of the application is Data Source=localhost\foobar;Initial Catalog=barfoo;Integrated Security=True with provider name System.Data.SqlClient. If I change localhost\foobar to *localhost\developer_2005* then the application can connect like it should. How can I create an alias so that I won't have to change the string in the file? I tried, in SQL Server Management Studio, to create a Server Registration with registered server name "localhost\developer", but this didn't seem to do any good. Not even sure what that really did... But then I discovered SQL Server Configuration Manager\SQL Native Client COnfiguration\Aliases. And I kind of assume this is where the solution lies. But I can't quite figure out how to add a new one... When creating a new one, I have to provide Alias Name, Port No, Protocol and Server, and I don't really have a clue what to put in either of them.

  • Can't serve files without extension because they "appear to be script" on IIS7.5

    I created a certain number of static JSON files with no extension in a subfolder of my site. I want to use them for tests. The problem is that IIS is refusing to serve them because : HTTP Error 404.17 - Not Found The requested content appears to be script and will not be served by the static file handler. The folder is a subfolder of an ASP.NET application and I can't create an application just for it, neither can I change the parent application's application pool. Actually, I don't have access to the IIS configuration other than through the web.config file in the folder in question. I assume there must be a way to get a web server to serve static files, right?

  • Improving performance by using an additional static file server

    Hello there, I´m planning for a large website that includes many static assets (js, css, images and thumbnails) in the generated pages. That website will use TYPO3 as CMS (is is a customer requirement). I guess I could seriously improve performance / page load times by using a two server setup. One server where the main application (PHP) runs and another one where the static files sit being served by a trimmed down version of apache or something like lighthttpd. Including e. g. js or css files from the file server is of course no big deal. Just use an absolute url http://static.example.com/js/main.js and be done with it. But: that website will have pages with MANY thumbnails of e. g. product images on it. So I see two problems when the main application tries to create a thumbnail of some image: the original image like products/some.jpg is uploaded on the static file server and therefore not on the same server as the PHP application which tries to create the thumbnail. TYPO3 writes created thumbnails to a temp directory which is expected to be on the same server. Therefore, hundreds of thumbnails will be written and served from that temp directory which is on the same server as the main application - the static file server is in that case basically useless, all thumbnails will be requested from the server of the main application. So, my question is: how to overcome this shortcomings? Is it possible to "symlink" some directories to another server? So, for example, if PHP tries to open the original products image for thumbnail creation with imagecreate("products/some.jpg") the products folder actually "points" to the products folder on the static image server? I know something like this can be done with .htaccess but is it possible on file system level?

    I get daily critical errors from Kaspersky involving Explorer.exe... The file in question is almost always in the Recycle Bin, or something on the desktop. Not sure if it's a bug, something to be concerned about, or an easy fix, etc. I usually just empty the recycle bin for a temporary fix, but would like to get to the root of the error. Thoughts?

  • How to allow password protected start-stop-daemon functionality?

    I would like to use Ubuntu's start-stop-daemon to start my application, but the application protects some sensitive information, so I have a mechanism where the application prompts for a password that's then used to generate a hashkey, which is used as the secret key for a symmetric encryption (AES) to encrypt and decrypt things from a database. I'd like to daemonize this application and have it run from start-stop-daemon, so that sudo service appname stop and sudo service appname start would work, but, I'm not sure how to go about doing this with the added complexity of a password prompt. Is there something that supports this or do I have to program it from scratch? I figured I should ask first before re-inventing the wheel. Thanks in advance.

  • Group traffic shaping with traffic control?

    I'm trying to limit the output bandwidth generated by an application with linux tc. This application sends me the source port of the request that I use has a filter to limit each user at a given downloadspeed. I feel that my setup could be managed way better if I had a better knowledge of linux tc. At the application level users are categorized as members of a group, each group have a limited bandwidth. Example : Members of group A : 512kbit/s Members of group B : 1Mbit/s Members of group C : 2Mbit/s When a user connects to the application, it retrieves the source port to the origin of the request from the user and sends me the source port and the bandwidth at which the user must be limited depending on group to which it belongs. With these informations I must add the appropriate rules so that the user (the source port in reality) is limited to the right bandwidth. If the user that connect isn't a member of any group it should be limited at a default bandwidth speed. I'm actually managing this by using a self made daemon that add or remove rules from when it receive a request from the application. With my little knowledge of tc I'm not able to limit other users (ones that aren't in a group, all others in fact) at a default speed and my configuration seems awful to me. I would like to know how to manage the fact that for all other users (request/source port, whatever you name it) could be limited at a given speed each. I mean that each connection should be able to use at max 100kbit/s for example, not a shared 100kbit/s. I also would like to know if there is a way to simplify my rules. I don't know if it is possible to use only one class per group and associate multiple filters to the same class so each users could be handled by one class and not one class per user.     Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101, but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? Their specific requirements are: For my application to authenticate against their Active Directory, and Only allow access to the application from within their network If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client?

  • File sharing problem on Windows Server 2003 x64

    Hi, We have a customer that hosts our .NET application server on Windows Server 2003 x64. The problem is, its file sharing gets totally disabled after about 10-30 minutes. The only way to re-enable it is to restart the server but the same thing happens again after each restart. This server contains SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, .NET Framework 3.5 and our .NET based application server. We haven't had such a problem with any other customer before so we asked them to prepare another server to deploy our application on it. We installed our application server on the new machine and let SQL Server remain on the old one. Unfortunately the same problem happened to the new machine too. Now the old machine works only as database server and the new one works as application server but both of them have the same file sharing problem. File sharing on both machines doesn't get disabled on the same time but it eventually happens to both of them. I wonder why is this happening and how to find the reason to this problem. Any suggestion or solution is much appreciated.

  • Multiple subdomains resolving to one domain?

    I'm trying to host an application, but allow the customer to use their own sub domain so that it does not confuse their own customers. So for example, by application would run on app.mydomain.com, but my customer would access it via their own subdomain (app.somedomain.com and/or app.anotherdomain.com). Is this even possible? (Possibly relevant information: my application is hosted on media temple and uses Apache) Thanks!
