• Using Interface Builder efficiently

  I am new to iPhone and objective c. I have spent hours and hours and hours reading documents and trying to understand how things work. I have RTFM or at least am in the process. My main problem is that I want to understand how to specify where an event gets passed to and the only way I have been able to do it is by specifying delegates but I am certain there is an easier/quicker way in IB. So, an example. Lets say I have 20 different views and view controllers and one MyAppDelegate. I want to be able to build all of these different Xib files in IB and add however many buttons and text fields and whatever and then specify that they all produce some event in the MyAppDelegate object. To do this I added a MyAppDelegate object in each view controller in IB's list view. Then I created an IBAction method in MyAppDelegate in XCode and went back to IB and linked all of the events to the MyAppDelegate object in each Xib file. However when I tried running it it just crashed with a bad read exception. My guess is that each Xib file is putting a MyAppDelegate object pointer that has nothing to do with the eventual MyAppDelegate adress that will actually be created at runtime. So my question is...how can I do this?!!!

So the two questions are what is the best logic of finding a business by its categories using the latter form and number two how to get that in a pretty URL all through RESTful routes in Rails.

• Hierarchical Data in MySQL is as fast as XML to retrieve?

  i've got a list of all countries - states - cities (- subcities/villages etc) in a XML file and to retrieve for example a state's all cities it's really quick with XML (using xml parser). i wonder, if i put all this information in mysql, is retrieving a state's all cities as fast as with XML? cause XML is designed to store hierarchical data while relational databases like mysql are not. the list contains like 500 000 entities. so i wonder if its as fast as XML using either of: Adjacency list model Nested Set model And which one should i use? Cause (theoretically) there could be unlimited levels under a state (i heard that adjacency isn't good for unlimited child-levels). And which is fastest for this huge dataset? Thanks!

• How to configure git repository so a branch other than master is checked out after a cloning?

  I am trying to set up a git server with bunch of repositories. I am planning to use the branching model described in http://nvie.com/git-model article. So I will have at least two branches (named master and develop) in the repository. After a clone the master branch is checked out by git. Is there a git config option so that develop branch will be checked out instead? In effect I want git clone my_repo_url to behave as git clone -b develop my_repo_url.

• Django Initial for a ManyToMany Field

I would like to use the form to pass all the values as hidden with an inital values of username defaulting to the logged in user so that it becomes a subscribe form. • uniimageview not updating after views tranistion

  Hi I have one main view where I display an image, in the method viewDidLoad: ballRect = CGRectMake(posBallX, 144, 32.0f, 32.0f); theBall = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame:ballRect]; [theBall setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"ball.png"]]; [self.view addSubview:theBall]; [laPalla release]; Obviously, the value of posBallX is defined and then update via a custom method call many times in the same class. theBall.frame = CGRectMake(posBallX, 144, 32, 32); Everything works, but when I go to another view with [self presentModalViewController:viewTwo animated:YES]; and come back with [self presentModalViewController:viewOne animated:YES]; the image is displayed correctly after the method viewDidLoad is called (I retrieve the values with NSUserDefaults) but no more in the second method. In the NSLog I can even see the new posBallX updating correctly, but the Image is simply no more shown... The same happens with a Label as well, which should print the value of posBallX. So, things are just not working if I come back to the viewOne from the viewTwo... Any idea??????? Thanks so much!

• Repository vs Data Access

  Hi guys In the context of the n-tier application, is there a difference between what you would consider your data access classes to be and your repositories? I tend to think yes but I just wanted to see what other thought. My thinking is that the job of the repository is just to contain and execute the raw query itself, where as the data access class would create the context, execute the repository (passing in the context), handle mapping the data model to the domain model and return the result back up... What do you guys think? Also do you see any of this changing in a Linq to XML scenario (assuming that you change the context for the relevant XDocument)? Cheers Anthony

• Django admin output extra HTML in ModelSite

  Ultimately, I want to add an <iframe> to the display of a particular model on Django's admin page. Django is already rendering the form for this model correctly, but I want to add this <iframe> in addition to Django's form. The src attribute needs to involve the primary key for the currently-displayed record. I've learned how to properly override the change_form.html template through Django's documentation, and I can add markup to the right block, but I can't figure out how to access the primary key value. (No amount of determined Googling has helped at all.) Alternatively, is there a direct way to specify that I want to produce extra output in my ModelSite definition?

  Hi All, I am experimenting with the Google App Engine and have a question. For the sake of simplicity, let's say my app is modeling a computer network (a fairly large corporate network with 10,000 nodes). I am trying to model my Node class as follows: class Node(db.Model): name = db.StringProperty() neighbors = db.SelfReferenceProperty() Let's suppose, for a minute, that I cannot use a ListProperty(). Based on my experiments to date, I can assign only a single entity to 'neighbors' - and I cannot use the "virtual" collection (node_set) to access the list of Node neighbors. So... my questions are: Does SelfReferenceProperty limit you to a single entity that you can reference? If I instead use a ListProperty, I believe I am limited to 5,000 keys, which I need to exceed. • How to create a test environnement on the production FTP

  Hello, I'm currently working on a symfony webapp, which is already on production. To develop and add/delete/modify functionnality of the model, I work on my laptop, using symfony 'dev' environnemment. I test if everything work fine, then I pray a little and deploy it on the prod server (with all the risk of data error, like when I add new not null attributes on the model, prod server configuration special stuff, version of php/apache etc.). The problem is that I would like to setup a "staging" server, which would be a copy of the production server (same database, same configuration apache/php), so that, if the deployment goes bad, the production user stay untouched and working, only the staging server is down. But my client has only 1 FTP available. So, the question is : can I run 2 symfony project, with different models, on the same FTP ? Or is there another way to do what I want to do ? Thank you !

  I've designed an EF4 model (quite complex inheritance, lots of small tables incl. multiple self-referencing), generated (table-per-type) a database and inserted some basic data manually. It works fine in an ASP.Net Dynamic Data Entities web application with full automatic scaffolding. But when in a WinForms application using the same model (I share it as a part of a class library) I construct a query and bind a combo box to it (the way it's shown here), I get an InnerException {"Internal .NET Framework Data Provider error 1004, 0, Unable to find property... I've found a question about the same problem here (incl. a sample to reproduce the error) but no answer. I use final Visual Studio 2010, no beta.

• How does Rails find models and controllers? How can I get it to load more models?

  I'm trying to create a non-ActiveRecord model in app/models/gamestate.rb. Then inside my controller (PlayController) I should be able to do GameState.new, right? No go: NameError (uninitialized constant PlayController::GameState): app/controllers/play_controller.rb:23:in `play' (at least in the development environment) But! If I do have a model called app/models/play.rb, then it's automatically loaded and I can do Play.new. So my question is: how does Rails know which classes to load? What sort of name mangling does it do to get from play#action to PlayController to app/controllers/play_controller.rb to app/models/play.rb? It seems awfully fragile, but maybe a better understanding of how this works would help. And finally, how can I get it to load app/models/gamestate.rb?

• lots of backbone views - performance issues?

  tl;dr: I wonder if having lots (100+ for the moment, potentially up to 1000/2000 or more) of backbone views (as a cell of a table) is too heavy or not The project I'm working on revolves around a planning view. There one row per user that covers 6 hours of a day, each hour splitted in 4 slots of 15mn. This planning is used to add "reservations" when clicking on a slot, and should handle hovering of the correct slots, and also handle when it is NOT possible to make a reservation - ie. prevent user click on an "unavailable" slot. There is many reasons why a slot can't be clicked on: the user is not available at this time, or the user is in a reservation; or the app needs to "force" a delay slot between two reservations. Reservations (a div) are rendered in a slot (a cell of a table), and by toying with dimensions, hovers the right number of slots. All this screen is handled with backbone. So For each slot I'm hovering on, I need to check wether I can do a reservation here or not. As of this moment, I use this by toying with the data attributes on the slots : when a reservation object is added, the slots covered are "enhanced with (among others) the reservation object (the backbone view object). But in some cases I don't quite have a grasp on now, it mixes up, and when the reservation view is removed, the slots are not "cleaned up" : the previous class is not reset correctly. It is probably something I've done wrong or badly, but this is only going to get heavier; I think I should use another class of Backbone views here, but I'm afraid the number of slots and thereof of views objects will be high and cause performance issue. I don't know mush about js perf so I'd like to have some feedback before jumping on that train. Any other advice on how to do this would be quite welcomed too. Thanks for your time. • Trying to understand MVC Models, Advice?

  I am writing my own MVC for the purpose of learning it. I have pretty much everything "down-pat" and my main stuff written besides models due to some trouble understanding them and lack of viable examples. Now, I've been told a model should reprecent a single row, someone told me, your model class should on update/insert and delete rows, anything that involves fetching a single or multiple rows - a "finder" class should be used. So... a) what is a finder class, b) how do I implement it in a useage example, c) Is what I've been told about models correct or is there a better way than "finders"? Advice is much appricated :)

• UITableView only pushes to one controller

  So I have my UITableView, with 2 sections and 1 cell in each, and if I click the first one, it works, then the second one, it goes to the first controller. RootViewController is a navigationController, trying to push to ViewControllers. • How to allow users to customize a DAL

  Hi, I'm working in ASP.NET in an application where often users want to add fields or change field names. I'd like to be able to have an xml schema in place that is parsed and a dynamic object model created from it that can be accessed throughout the application. My initial reaction is that this is not realistic. I think there is flexibility about the dynamic nature of it. I think the people I'm trying to build this for wouldn't mind recompiling. Even if the app recompiled, I don't know how to abstract away enough in my code access the data to allow for users changing property names, etc. How can you write LINQ when the properties might change? In short, there's two questions here: 1) is there a way to dynamically generate an object model of the database and 2) is there a way to abstract away enough so that code accessing the database doesn't break when properties change?

• Redirecting users after destroy

  I have 3 models: Questions, Answers, and Profiles (I know, it should be called "Users"). When you view a question Q, I query the database for the answers to Q. (They are linked by id.) I want it to redirect to /questions/Q. What's the best way to do this? I know that there's a redirect_to method, but I don't know how to implement it when I want to redirect to an action for a different controller. It also needs to remember the question from which the answer is being deleted. I tried passing something like :question_id in link_to as: #{link_to 'Delete my answer', a, :confirm => 'Are you sure?', :question_id => @question.id, :method => :delete} In AnswersController#destroy: def destroy @answer = Answer.find(params[:id]) @answer.destroy respond_to do |format| format.html { redirect_to(answers_url) } format.xml { head :ok } end @question = Question.find(params[:question_id]) redirect_to question_path(@question) end The :question_id information is not passed to the destroy method, so I get this error: Couldn't find Question without an ID To confirm, I added a puts call before Question.find, and it returned nil.

• binding to arraycollection does not work

  Hi, I am using flex SDK 3.5. I have model.as and in it i have an ArrayCollection (name it arr_mod) which is Bindable. From my mxml i link to this arr_mod in two ways: 1) in DataGrid i set dataprovider={arr_mode} ... 2) in Button i add new item to the arr_mod this way: 3) in textBox i want to add mx:TextBox text="{mySpecialCounterFunc(arr_mod)}" note that in the Script of mxml arr_mod is Bindable as well as in the class definition in model.as The problem is, that when clicking on button, mySpecialCounterFunc is not called! it should be called, since i use {} and this should listen to changes in arr_mod (a change that was made in the button should cause a new item to be added.. and than the listener to respond).
