  A couple of my friends run a business and they asked me to build them a public website. It will only be used for information about the company with soe pictures. No transactions will be involved. Right now I work for a company where I build internal websites, and do alot of backend programming in C#. I understand html, css, jquery, etc. so I feel like I am completely capable of building a website for them. However, I do not know all the basic knowledge to building one. For example, where should we host the files, what type of security issues do I need to be aware of, what's the best software to use for developing websites (I use visual studio at work), where can I find some design techniques, etc. Any help is appreciated.

  I am from Nepal and it's faster to download apps from server for nepal using through ubuntu software center. But when i use np.archive.ubuntu.com server. There is no updated softwares and few softwares and nvidia driver are outdated. for e.g. i cannot even install openshot when i user server for nepal. It provides error which cannot be solved. I want to know how can the server for nepal be updated frequently with us.archive.ubuntu.com. i use ubuntu 12.10. and i want to use server for nepal since the download speed faster than 2x than from us server.

• Why to let / not let developers test their own work

  I want to gather some arguments as to why letting a developer testing his/her own work as the last step before the product goes into production is a bad idea, because unfortunately, my place of work sometimes does this (the last time this came up, the argument boiled down to most people being too busy with other things and not having the time to get another person familiar with that part of the program - it's very specialised software). There are test plans in this case (though not always), but I am very much in favor of making a person who didn't make the changes that are tested actually doing the final testing. So I am asking if you could provide me with a good and solid list of arguments I can bring up the next time this is discussed. Or to provide counter-arguments, in case you think this is perfectly fine especially when there are formal test cases to test.

• How do I get one monitor on top of the other?

  I'm using a laptop and a monitor (wall mounted) over my laptop. I would like to reflect this physical hardware setup in my software screen setup. So that I can move my mouse upward, out of my laptop screen and use the monitor on the wall. I have been searching for a solution for a while, and I hope somone can help me out. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 "out of the box". Side by side screen setups works just fine, over/under is doesn't work.

• Sharing Files between Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 8

  I have Ubuntu and Windows 8 installed on one System. I am trying to share files between these two operating systems using an NTFS Partition wich was created by Windows. I don't have trouble accessing the data on this partition from Ubuntu, however if i create a file in Ubuntu, this file doesn't show up when I boot into Windows. Does anyone know how to do this. From what I have read file sharing should work without installing any additional Software, as I am not trying to access the Linux ext4 Partition from Windows.

• How To Purchase An MSDN License In India [closed]

  I need to purchase a single license for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN. The MSDN buy site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb841434.aspx) does not allow purchases from India. It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate? • Is there such a thing as having too many private functions/methods?

  I understand the importance of well documented code. But I also understand the importance of self-documenting code. The easier it is to visually read a particular function, the faster we can move on during software maintenance. With that said, I like to separate big functions into other smaller ones. But I do so to a point where a class can have upwards of five of them just to serve one public method. Now multiply five private methods by five public ones, and you get around twenty-five hidden methods that are probably going to be called only once by those public ones. Sure, it's now easier to read those public methods, but I can't help but think that having too many functions is bad practice.

• How can I restore a country specific apt-get update mirror?

  While configuring my new 13.10 installation, I chose to change the default update server using the "Software & Updates" GUI tool available in the System settings panel. Before this change the selected update server was "Server for Italy" (I live there). Now it's one of the mirrors available in the list of mirrors (one of italian ones). How is "Server for COUNTRY" chosen in the list of mirrors for a country? How can I restore the "Server for Italy" option? Is it advisable to do so? I want to revert that setting because I found that the selected mirror is not up to date (checked from Here).

• What are the most important languages to localize for on the App Store?

  It's obvious that to gain more customers on any given platform, one of the most important steps to take would be to localize your software into many languages: as many as possible, ideally. However, with independently developed apps, it tends to be difficult to localize into many different languages, due to not having the budget and / or time to do so. My question is if I were to localize my apps into languages other than English on the iOS App Store, which languages should I prioritize? (Maybe the top three or four most important.) (Also, let's pretend this is a generic app that won't cater more to one language demographic than another.)

• Installling a brother printer in Ubuntu 12.04 (MFCJ6510DW)

  I am trying to install a Brother MfCJ6510DW printer on Ubuntu 12.04. I have tried various ways, but nothing woks for me. I have downloaded the drivers from the solutions brother.com I tried to install from the "System setting- printing" on the pull-down menu. There I get the message "failed to read PPL file - it says something about a missing Asterisk in colum1 Line 1 In the terminal I get the message cannot find file or directory. Under localhost:631/printer, I get the message " no such file or directory" I tried to install the file I downloaded from the Brothers Solution Center on the Ubuntu Software Centre, there I get the message " The package is of bad quality" Help I downloaded Mfcj6510dwlpr-3.0.0-1.i386.deb and mfcj6510dwcupswrapper-3.0.0-1.i386 I also downloaded linux-bprinter-installer-1.0.0-1.gz, but this does not help either.

  My friend is a project manager for a software company. The most frustrating thing for him is that his engineers frequently leave their jobs. The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. • Is there a correlation between complexity and reachability?

  I've been studying cyclomatic complexity (McCabe) and reachability of software at uni recently. Today my lecturer said that there's no correlation between the two metrics, but is this really the case? I'd think there would definitely be some correlation, as less complex programs (from the scant few we've looked at) seem to have 'better' results in terms of reachability. Does anyone know of any attempt to look at the two metrics together, and if not, what would be a good place to find data on both complexity and reachability for a large(ish) number of programs?   I'm working on a resume and I'm trying to figure out the right terminology for the different types of software development. Right now, the only development term I know is 'web development.' But, I've also done a lot of Java and C# development for applications on the desktop. Obviously, this isn't web development; but, I'd like to be able to group these under a single term that is known within the community (it's a resume).   Since I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 I'd only missed one thing. A program which could launch typewriter sounds while typing. For instance, in Windows I used this: http://www.colorpilot.com/soundpilot.html for a long time. I learned then that this writing program: http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/ had the sounds but only for the program itself. However, sometimes I'm writing an email, writing on the web or doing more complex writing tasks in LibreOffice - all places where these long missed typing sounds don't apply. • How can set up a file sharing server to allow remote access over a WAN?

  I want to set up a server to allow remote access over a WAN. The purpose is to allow people to remote connect and download specific files from a specified folder hosted on the server. Is there software available to achieve this, preferably with an interface so I can easily add and remove users, plus monitor who is connected at any time? I have looked around and only found terminal references, and not very clear how to set up. I have a service running on my Win server, but I am hoping to move from that to Ubuntu for my file sharing. I do not want people who access the server to have any local accounts or any access to any folder/files apart from authorised folders/files. Thanks

• Better way to search for text in two columns

  Here is the scenario. I am making a custom blogging software for my site. I am implementing a search feature. It's not very sophisticated - basically it just takes the search phrase entered and runs this query: $query="SELECT * FROM `blog` WHERE `title` LIKE '%$q%' OR `post` LIKE '%$q%'"; Which is meant to simply search the title and post body for the phrase entered. Is there a better way to do that, keeping in mind how long it would take to run the query on up to 100 rows, each with a post length of up to 1500 characters? I have considered using a LIMIT statement to (sometimes) restrict the number of rows that the query would examine. Good idea?

  After reading some projects, I find that it is not the architecture of the software that is really hard to know. It is not hard to figure out the architecture immediately if the project is clearly designed and implemented, if it's hard and never seen before, some day later I can find out some pattern similar to the one I read in the same domain. The difficulty is that the concepts and mechanism defined by the author are really hard to guess, and these concepts may spread in the whole project which makes it hard to grasp. The situation is normal and universal and you can ask questions to your colleague when in a company. However, it gets worse if nobody around you knows these details. How do you handle these details which block your reading?

• ubuntu 12.10 graphic does not works correctly

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 but my graphic does not works correctly. I used this command to installation: sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle fglrx-dev But after the restarting my system, the side panel and upper one does not appear any more! I guessed it maybe that I used some incompatible packages so I removed the graphic card driver by this command: sudo apt-get purge fglrx fglrx-amdcccle fglrx-dev and tried it from graphical way from system setting > Software Sources > Aditional drivers and choosed the second option then applied change. But the resault waas such as before way!! I belive it is because of the Ubuntu does not know my graphic card. I am using VAIO VPCEA2TGX (N/A) and my graphic cart version is Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series if it is matter. So now what is the exact problem and what I have to solve this?
