• What are the prerequisites for learning embedded systems programming ?

  I have completed my graduation in Computer engineering. We had some basic electronics courses in Digital signal processing, Information theory etc but my primary field is Programming. However, i was looking to get into Embedded sytems programming with NO knowledge of how it is done. However, i am very keen on going into this field. My questions : what are the languages used to program embedded system programs ? Will i be able to learn without having any basics in electronics ? any other prerequisites that i should know ?

• Google Drive Update keeps throwing an error when I try to save a thumbnail

  The Base64 string checks out fine. I was able to export it to another website and download it again as my image. When I try to do an update using the Drive Javascript api, it just keeps returning this error: Invalidvaluefor:Notavalidbase64bytestring I also true making the string URL safe. Per this page https://google-api-client-libraries.appspot.com/documentation/drive/v2/python/latest/drive_v2.files.html Am I doing something wrong here, the documentation says send Base64, the string is valid and, the string is intact throughout the process, but Google will not accept it? I am using the javascript api, I think there is maybe a bug sending the thumbnail using the javascript api. • Is there a DRMAA Java library that works with Torque/PBS?

  Does anybody know a Java implementation of the DRMAA-API that is known to work with PBS/Torque cluster software? The background behind this: I would like to submit jobs to a newly set-up linux cluster from java using a DRMAA compliant API. The cluster is managed by PBS/Torque. Torque includes PBS DRMAA 1.0 library for Torque/PBS that contains a DRMA-C binding and provides in libdrmaa.so and .a binaries. I know that Sun grid engine includes a drmaa.jar providing a Java-DRMAA API. In fact I opted to use SGE but it was decided to try PBS first. The theory behind that decision was: 'DRMAA is a standard and therefore a Java API needs only a standards compliant drmaa-c binding.' However, I couldn't find such 'general DRMAA-C-java API' and now assume that this assumption is wrong and that the Java libraries are engine specific. Are we stuck here? Any comments appreciated.

• How to associate Wi-Fi beacon info with a virtual "location"?

  We have a piece of embedded hardware that will sense 802.11 beacons, and we're using this to make a map of currently visible bssid -> signalStrength. Given this map, we would like to make a determination: Is this likely to be a location I have been to before? If so, what is its ID? If not, I should remember this location: generate a new ID. Now what should I store (and how should I store it) to make future determinations easier? This is for an augmented-reality app/game. We will be using it to associate particular characters and events with "locations". The device does not have internet or cellular access, so using a geolocation service is out of consideration for the time being. (We don't really need to know where we are in reality, just be able to determine if we return there.) It isn't crucial that it be extremely accurate, but it would be nice if it was tolerant to signal strength changes or the occasional missing beacon. It should be usable in relatively low numbers of access points (e.g. rural house with one wireless router) or many (wandering around a dense metropolis). In the case of a city, it should change location every few minutes of walking (continuously-overlapping signals make this a bit more tricky in naive code). A reasonable number of false positives (match a location when we aren't actually there) is acceptable. The wrong character/event showing up just adds a bit of variety. False negatives (no location match) are a bit more troublesome: this will tend to add a better-matching new location to the saved locations, masking the old one. While we will have additional logic to ensure locations that the device hasn't seen in a while will "orphan" any associated characters or events (if e.g. you move to a different country), we'd prefer not to mask and eventually orphan locations you do visit regularly. Some technical complications: signalStrength is returned as 1-4; presumably it's related to dB, but we are not sure exactly how; in my experiments it tends to stick to either 1 or 4, but occasionally we see numbers in between. (Tech docs on the hardware are sparse.) The device completes a scan of one-quarter of the channel space every second; so it takes about 4-5 seconds to get a complete picture of what's around. The list isn't always complete. (We are making strides to fix this using some slight sampling period randomization, as recommended by the library docs. We're also investigating ways to increase the number of scans without killing our performance; the hardware/libs are poorly behaved when it comes to saturating the bus.) We have only kilobytes to store our history. We have a "working" impl now, but it is relatively naive, and flaky in the face of real-world Wi-Fi behavior. (The "near-perfect match" code above would appear to make it harder to match in the future... It's mostly to keep new powerful APs from being associated with other locations, but you'd think we'd need something to counter this if e.g. an AP doesn't show up in the next 10 times I match a location.) I have a feeling that we're missing some things from set theory or graph theory that would assist in grouping/classification of this data, and perhaps providing a better "confidence level" on matches, and better robustness against missed beacons, signal strength changes, and the like. Also it would be useful to have a good method for mutating locations over time. Any useful resources out there for this sort of thing? Simple and/or robust approaches we're missing?

• How do I search using the Google Maps API?

  Hello all, I'm trying to figure out how to search for nearby businesses in an iPhone app using the Google Maps API. I'm completely new to Javascript, and have waded through some of Google's sample code easily enough. I found how to grab the user's current location. Now I want to search for "restaurants" near that location. I'm just building on the sample code from here. • System.Drawing.Image for Images in Business Objects?

  Hi Folks I'd like to store an image in a business object. In MSDN I saw that the System.Drawing-namespace provides lots of GDI+-features, etc. Is it okay to store an Image in an System.Drawing.Image class in business layer (which is a class library "only"), and thus including a reference to System.Drawing too? I slightly feel just kind of bad doing that, 'cause it seems like I have UI-specific references in business code. Moreover, the code could become unnecessarily platform-dependant (though this is only a problem in theory, because we do not develop for multiple platforms). If it isn't right that way, which type would fit best? Thank you for any response! Matthias

  I've thought about this before and this topic has often steered me away from Open Source projects. Recently DotNetPanel has changed it's name to WebSitePanel and gone Open Source. The rumor mill is speculating that Microsoft is behind this. My question (in multi-part) is quite simple. Can somebody please explain to me how quality assurance works on Open Source projects? How can a closed application get "only better" when Open Source? Doesn't the "too many cooks in the kitchen" theory apply when too many developers contribute (possibly bad) code to a project?

  Referencing http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1827997/is-facebook-an-openid-provider here. This is kind of an additional question based on it. I have also read the article at : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2264266/what-is-the-openid-url-of-facebook - but I am still pretty confused on the whole ordeal. The goal is for people who use facebook to easily login to our website, not to neccessarily integrate with facebook and add things to it (yet). I have read the documentation on facebook connect and am still having trouble grasping exactly what we need to do to accomplish this. I notice that it says that facebook accepts openid logins - so in theory someone with a facebook account could login to a site that took other openid logins, correct? Or do I have to code a separate 'facebookconnect' system just to accept logins from facebook accounts?

• Entity with Guid ID is not inserted by NHibernate

  I am experimenting with NHibernate (version 2.1.0.4000) with Fluent NHibernate Automapping. My test set of entities persists fine with default integer IDs I am now trying to use Guid IDs with the entities. Unfortunately changing the Id property to a Guid seems to stop NHibernate inserting objects. • How to remove a model object from an EMF model and its GEF Editor via Adapter

  This question is principally a follow-up to my question about EMF listening mechanisms. So, I have a third-party EMF model (uneditable) which is based on a generic graph model. The structure is as follows: Project | ItemGraph | Item | Document | DocumentGraph / | \ Tokens Nodes Relations(Edges) I have a GEF editor which works on the DocumentGraph (i.e., not the root object, perhaps this is a problem?): getGraphicalViewer().setContents(documentGraph). THe editor has the following edit part structure: DocumentGraphEP / \ Primary Connection LayerEP LayerEP / \ | TokenEP NodeEP RelationEP PrimaryLayerEP and ConnectionLayerEP both have simple Strings as model, which are not represented in the EMF (domain) model. They are simply used to add a primary (i.e., node) layer, and a connection layer (with ShortestPathConnectionRouter) to the editor. Problem: I am trying to get myself into the workings of EMF adapters, and have tried to make use of the available tutorials, mainly the EMF-GEF Eclipse tutorial, vainolo's blog, and vogella's tutorial. I thought I'd start with an easy thing, so tried to remove a node from the graph and see if I get it to work. Which I didn't, and I don't see where the problem is. I can select a node, and have the generic delete Action in my toolbar, but when I click it, nothing happens. Here is the respective source code for the different responsible parts. Please be so kind to point me to any errors (of thinking, coding errors, whathaveyou) you can find.   Hi, I want to detect when my touchpad is clicked! I normally use a usb mouse, so I don't use the touchpad for anything. Instead I'd like to make it possible to perform an action in .NET, when the touchpad is clicked. This way I can use it as a shortcut: One tap and something cool happens. Is this possible, and if yes, any clue how? I'd prefer if it could be working in VB.NET or C#. My theory is that I'd have to make a mousehook, which then somehow determines which device the click is coming from. If the click is determined to be from the touchpad, then cancel the click and doWhatever(). Thanks!

• Grand Central Strategy for Opening Multiple Files

  I have a working implementation using Grand Central dispatch queues that (1) opens a file and computes an OpenSSL DSA hash on "queue1", (2) writing out the hash to a new "side car" file for later verification on "queue2". I would like to open multiple files at the same time, but based on some logic that doesn't "choke" the OS by having 100s of files open and exceeding the hard drive's sustainable output. Photo browsing applications such as iPhoto or Aperture seem to open multiple files and display them, so I'm assuming this can be done. I'm assuming the biggest limitation will be disk I/O, as the application can (in theory) read and write multiple files simultaneously. Any suggestions? TIA

• Top techniques to avoid 'data scraping' from a website database

  I am setting up a site using PHP and MySQL that is essentially just a web front-end to an existing database. Understandably my client is very keen to prevent anyone from being able to make a copy of the data in the database yet at the same time wants everything publicly available and even a "view all" link to display every record in the db. Whilst I have put everything in place to prevent attacks such as SQL injection attacks, there is nothing to prevent anyone from viewing all the records as html and running some sort of script to parse this data back into another database. Even if I was to remove the "view all" link, someone could still, in theory, use an automated process to go through each record one by one and compile these into a new database, essentially pinching all the information. Does anyone have any good tactics for preventing or even just dettering this that they could share. Thanks

• Python Pari Library?

  Pari/GP is an excellent library for functions relating to number theory. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be an up to date wrapper for python anywhere around, (pari-python uses an old version of pari) and I'm wondering if anyone knows of some other library/wrapper that is similar to pari or one that uses pari. I'm aware of SAGE, but it's far too large for my needs. GMPY is excellent as well, but there are some intrinsic pari functions that I miss, and I'd much rather use python than the provided GP environment. NZMATH, mpmath, scipy and sympy were all taken into consideration as well. On a related note, does anyone have any suggestions on loading the pari dll itself and using the functions contained in it? I've tried to very little success, other than loading it and learning about function pointers.

Everyone suggests The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward Tufte and that's spot on for what I'm looking for, so anything related to that would be great. Now I want to get a couple of other numbers which are not x or y, but are also between 0 and 49 (I am using Objective C but this is more of a general theory question I think?). • Does the .NET CLR Really Optimize for the Current Processor

  When I read about the performance of JITted languages like C# or Java, authors usually say that they should/could theoretically outperform many native-compiled applications. The theory being that native applications are usually just compiled for a processor family (like x86), so the compiler cannot make certain optimizations as they may not truly be optimizations on all processors. On the other hand, the CLR can make processor-specific optimizations during the JIT process. Does anyone know if Microsoft's (or Mono's) CLR actually performs processor-specific optimizations during the JIT process? If so, what kind of optimizations?
