• Should one generally develop a client library for REST services to help prevent API breakages?

  We have a project where UI code will be developed by the same team but in a different language (Python/Django) from the services layer (REST/Java). The code for each layer exits in different code repositories and which can follow different release cycles. I'm trying to come up with a process that will prevent/reduce breaking changes in the services layer from the perspective of the UI layer. I've thought to write integration tests at the UI layer level that we'll run whenever we build the UI or the services layer (we're using Jenkins as our CI tool to build the code which is in two Git repos) and if there are failures then something in the services layer broke and the commit is not accepted. Would it also be a good idea (is it a best practice?) to have the developer of the services layer create and maintain a client library for the REST service that exists in the UI layer that they will update whenever there is a breaking change in their Service API? Conceivably, we would then have the advantage of a statically-typed API that the UI code builds against. If the client library API changes, then the UI code won't compile (so we'll know sooner that there was a breaking change). I'd also still run the integration tests upon building the UI or services layer to further validate that the integration between UI and the service(s) still works.

• My computer keeps crashing and I just want it FIXED

  So long story short, I had my brother build me a computer for my birthday last year. I saw how good his was (also built by him) so I decided I would have him build me one. About a month after this was all finished, my computer started crashing when I when run over 3 programs. For example, an online game, a music player (spotify), skype, and a browser with a few tabs open. The way it would crash is the screen will freeze and a buzzing noise will come from whatever audio device I am using (headset, speakers) I took it to a computer tech guy and he told me my cooling system was inadequate. SOOO he led me to buy a CORSAIR H75 Liquid cooling system. Everything was good for about a week, and now it just did the same thing again. I am so freaking over this guys and I really need some help figuring out what the heck is wrong, I dont care how long it takes, just please help me.

• How to compile FFmpeg with x265 support?

  Today I found out that x265 is already present in ffmpeg so I compiled ffmpeg with this guide Sadly libx265 did not work on ubuntu, however on windows I tried the same thing with zeranoe ffmpeg build and it worked without a problem. So do you think i did something wrong or it is not yet implemented in linux build (using that guide)? • Can't change folder background

  I tried to change via dragging from the Backgrounds and Emblems window, but the icon just goes back to that window rather than changing the folder background.However, I can change the task bar by this drag-n-drop. Probably it is something about changing ownership permission? if so how to change that? • Running own DNS Server for learning purpose

  I would like to run my own DNS server in my laptop for learning purpose. I recently used Google Public DNS and liked it. I wanted to build some thing similar and small for my web browsing. What I vaguely dream of is to use my own DNS server as Primary DNS server and Google public DNS as secondary DNS server. I would like to build my own DNS server gradually by editing the configuration files (If it can be automated it will be great, but have no clues there). Sometimes it sounds like a stupid idea to me, but I am fine with editing config file for each site I want to add to my DNS server. Any pointers/suggestion is welcome.

• Would Using a PHP Framework Be Beneficial in My Context?

  I've just started work at a small start-up company who mainly uses PHP to develop their front-end apps. I had no prior PHP experience before joining, and this has led to my apps becoming large pieces of spaghetti code. I essentially started by adding code to implement an initial feature, and then continued to hack in more code to implement further features – without much thought for the overall design. The apps themselves output XML to render on small mobile devices. I recently started looking into frameworks that I could use. I reckon an advantage would be that they seem to force developers to modularise their programs using good-practice design patterns. This seems great for someone in my position. The extra functions they provide, for example: interfacing with databases in such a way as to make SQL injection impossible, would be very useful too. The downside I can see is that there will be a lot of overhead for me in terms of the time taken to learn the framework itself (while still getting to grips with PHP itself). I'm also worried that it will be overkill for the scale of the apps we develop. They tend to be programs that interface with a fairly simple back-end DB, and will generate about 5 different XML screens. Probably around 1 or 2 thousand lines of code. The time it takes just to configure the frameworks may not be worth it. The final problem I can see is that developers in the company – who have to go over my code, and who do not know the PHP framework I may use – will have a much harder time understanding it. Given those pros and cons, I'm still not sure on what the best course of action will be; so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Until few days back, $1million dollar question was how to change the integrated WLS port number?So, heres the answer after some R&D. In the view menu, click on "Application Server Navigator". Right click on Integrated Weblogic server.1) If it is the first time that you are trying to start the server, then there is a menu "Create Default Domain". If you click on this, a window will be displayed where it asks for the preferred port number. • Comparing the Performance of Visual Studio's Web Reference to a Custom Class

  As developers, we all make assumptions when programming. Perhaps the biggest assumption we make is that those libraries and tools that ship with the .NET Framework are the best way to accomplish a given task. For example, most developers assume that using ASP.NET's Membership system is the best way to manage user accounts in a website (rather than rolling your own user account store). Similarly, creating a Web Reference to communicate with a web service generates markup that auto-creates a proxy class, which handles the low-level details of invoking the web service, serializing parameters, and so on. Recently a client made us question one of our fundamental assumptions about the .NET Framework and Web Services by asking, "Why should we use proxy class created by Visual Studio to connect to a web service?" In this particular project we were calling a web service to retrieve data, which was then sorted, formatted slightly and displayed in a web page. The client hypothesized that it would be more efficient to invoke the web service directly via the HttpWebRequest class, retrieve the XML output, populate an XmlDocument object, then use XSLT to output the result to HTML. Surely that would be faster than using Visual Studio's auto-generated proxy class, right? Prior to this request, we had never considered rolling our own proxy class; we had always taken advantage of the proxy classes Visual Studio auto-generated for us. • Complex Release Vehicle Management

  I'm looking into improving our build and release system. We are a .Net/Windows shop, and I don't see any really good tools for Windows for generating the files that are to be dropped in patch or hotfix. We are currently using TFSBuild 2010 with Windows Workflows for our continuous integration builds as well as our daily full build which includes an Installshield package for deployment. What is a good way of generating the list of files to be included in a "patch" style release, where one does not redistribute all the files, but only those necessary to accomplish the necessary changes? Are there any open source tools that work well for this, or do teams usually roll their own? I have considered using Beyond Compare but I would prefer something open source. The file "patch" creation must be 100% automatable. Which release vehicles really ought to be patch style? And which releases should replace all system files related to our application? Assume we have a very large amount of resources necessary to maintain. Is there any established material that is trusted within the industry for strategies about this? I realize it is different for "enterprise" rather than with typical websites. I am looking more for "enterprise" strategies due to our product distribution style. tl;dr Looking for info on how to ship more reliable packages?

However, the logs posted by those people indicate that the descriptor file was correctly read by Tomcat and their problem was with the WAR file itself. I'm assuming this is some kind of syntax error with the idp.xml, but cannot determine what it might be. Also - setting the Tomcat logging level to FINEST does not provide any additional information in the logs for this error.

• Ubuntu 12.04 OpenCL with Intel and Radeon?

  I want to setup my Ubuntu 12.04 with OpenCL(Open Computing Language) support for i7 2600k and Radeon HD5870. My Monitor is connected to the integrated Graphics of the i7. Intel OpenCL SDK is installed and working. Iteration of avaliable OpenCL devices shows 2 entries for Intel. As recommended I installed AMD APP SDK 2.6 first and then the fglrx driver. I installed fglrx from Ubuntu repositories. This works fine till here. When I run aticonfig --inital -f and restart the system I get into trouble.   What are "custom software companies"? By "custom software companies" I mean companies that make their money primarily from building custom, one off, bits of software. Example are agencies or middle-ware companies, or contractors/consultants like Redify. What's the opposite of "custom software companies"? The oposite of the above business model are companies that focus on long term products, whether they be deployable desktop/mobile apps, or SaaS software. A sure fire way to build up technical debt: I work for a company that attempts to focus on a suite of SaaS products. However, due to certain constraints we sometimes end up bending to the will of certain clients and we end building bits of custom software that can only be used for that client. This is a sure fire way to incur technical debt. Now we have a bit of software to maintain that adds nothing to our core product. If custom work is a sure fire way to build technical debt, how do agencies handle it? So that got me thinking. Companies who don't have a core product as the center of their business model, well they're always doing custom software work. How do they cope with the notion of technical debt? How does it not drive them into technical bankruptcy?

  One of the common queries when importing the tables via JDBC with 11gR2 is determining why the import wizard doesn’t display the tables that you think it should. I often just use the script below to dump out the schemas, tables and columns that the JDBC driver is returning. This is useful in a few areas; to figure out what the schema name is returned to double check with the schema name you have used in the location (this is used in the DatabaseMetaData.getTables API call within the basic JDBC metadata import. to figure out the data types returned from the JDBC driver when you see columns skipped because of no datatype supported messages. also…I can do it via scripting and don’t need to recompile classes and stuff :-) Edit the tcl script and set the JDBC driver, the connection URL and the username and password (they are at the bottom of the script), the script then calls a basic tcl procedure which writes to standard out the schemas, tables and columns with various properties. For example I executed it using the XML JDBC driver from ODI over a simple customers XML file and it writes the following metadata; You can add more details as you need and execute from the OMBPlus panel within OWB.   Notepad++ does auto-complete for html and also for JavaScript. but the auto-completion depends on file extension.html file supports completion for html only. Is there a way to enable auto-completion for javascript in the script tag of an html file? I mean, other than copying the auto-completion keyword list from "javascript.xml" to "html.xml" files... As suggested on stackoverflow, asking on superuser, as I could not find a satisfactory answer there. If anyone has any idea, please let me know! (I hope I am not the only one having this kind of an requirement! :))

• Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 in a VirtualBox: Gnome desktop not working

  I had Ubuntu 13.04 running in a VirtualBox (the host is WinXP). I've upgraded it to 13.10 but I've some issues: Gnome desktop is not working correctly (I can log in but the main menu bar remains empty - I can only log out with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) I cannot build and install the VirtualBox Guest Addons: When trying to build it, it says: me@virtuntu:/etc/init.d$ sudo ./vboxadd setup Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done. Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. • Message Driven Bean JMS integration

  In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 and above the product introduced the concept of real time JMS integration within the Framework for interfacing. Customer familiar with older versions of the Framework will recall that we used a component called the Multi-purpose Listener (MPL) which was a very light service bus for calling interface channels (including JMS). The MPL is not supplied with all products and customers prefer to use Oracle SOA Suite and native methods rather then MPL. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 (and for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 via Patches 9454971, 9256359, 9672027 and 9838219) we introduced real time JMS integration natively for outbound JMS integration and using Message Driven Beans (MDB) for incoming integration. The outbound integration has not changed a lot between releases where you create an Outbound Message Type to indicate the record types to send out, create a JMS sender (though now you use the Real Time Sender) and then create an External System definition to complete the configuration. When an outbound message appears in the table of the type and external system configured (via a business event such as an algorithm or plug-in script) the Oracle Utilities Application Framework will place the message on the configured Queue linked to the JMS Sender. The inbound integration has changed. In the past you created XAI Receivers and specified configuration about what types of transactions to process. This is now all configuration file driven. The configuration files for the Business Application Server (ejb-jar.xml and weblogic-ejb-jar.xml) define Message Driven Beans and the queues to monitor. When a message appears on the queue, the MDB processes it through our web services interface. Configuration of the MDB can be native (via editing the configuration files) or through the new user exit capabilities (which is aimed at maintaining custom configuration across upgrades). The latter is better as you build fragments of configuration to make it easier to maintain. In the next few weeks a number of new whitepaper will be released to illustrate the features of the Oracle WebLogic JMS and Oracle SOA Suite integration capabilities.

• MSDeploy - possible to call setAcl on multiple destinations in one go?

  I'm building a nice little continuous integration environment for our development team, based on TeamCity. It's working rather nicely, as it can build a mix of .NET and PHP projects, and push them to our internal and external platforms. I'm primarily using MsDeploy to push everything to the internal platform, as that's all IIS based. However, there's a number of builds where I need to set directory permissions on the destination directory. I can use the setAcl operator just fine, but that only seems to take a single destination as an argument. Therefore, if I need to alter the permissions on 5 destination directories, I need to call MsDeploy 5 times, which seems a lot of overhead. Is there a sensible way around this? Reading the documentation, I don't think MsDeploy takes more than a single argument for the setAcl operator, but could be wrong. Is there a better way for a build server to set multiple directory permissions in one go?
