• I cannot boot Ubuntu from WUBI install with windows 7, get an error message every time

  i have tried several times to install ubuntu using wubi, i can't use a disc as i have a notebook computer and there is no optical drive. the download and installation all seem to work well but whenever i try to boot ubuntu at the windows 7/ubuntu menu it comes up with this error screen. I have used both the C: drive and the D: drive to install Ubuntu several times each, it's always unsuccessful. "Windows has failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer Choose your language settings and then click 'next' Click repair your computer. If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000000F Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt." I use an ASUS x501a with windows 7. What do i do to fix this? I want to be able to dual boot Windows 7 and ubuntu. Thanks a lot :)

• HDA NVidia (GT520) - Sound Issue

  I have an GT520 graphics card and I am trying to get the sound working with my XBMC setup and I'm having trouble. • Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons. • How can I play 24Bit 96000Hz vinyl rips?

  I am getting music through the Nvidia HDMI but it is all down-sampled to 44000Hz. I have spent at least 3 hours searching for an answer yesterday. I use Pulse Volume and I even changed the default settings in the Pulse folder to 96000 but it does not work. Though 5.1 sound works perfectly. They all work well in Windows 7, but I prefer to use Ubuntu. All the config files for all the programs are in the etc folder, then look in the pulse folder, and there are 3 three files, 2 of these I changed the permissions and I changed 16 and 44000 to 24 and 96000 as I had read in another forum, but it worked for them and not for me. Though 5.1 works as I have special mp4 file that can check each channel. I did alot of restarts and checking after these changes as nothing had happened, my amp tells me the freq of the signal, which does work which I have tested on Windows 7. I have also gone to systems to download the latest driver for mu Nvidia card. But even if it does not work, I guess I can always play Cd's. But I think my player have become more unstable since I changed the configs, so I may uninstall and install Pulse Volume Control again.

• Fail to boot after installation onto ASUS PC 1015PX

  My new ASUS 1015PX has the usual Windows on the SDA1 partition - 100Gb, followed by SDA2 - 15Gb - as the recovery partition for Windows, and SDA3 with 183Gb for drive D:\ for windows. ASUS uses SDA4 - 19Mb for it's own use. 11.10 on an USB will load Ubuntu on a try basis and it seems OK, but every time I attempt an install, Ubuntu quickly shuts down and the restart process begins. This repeats endlessly. I've tried 10.04 Netbook Remix but that will not boot at all with the machine reporting - unknown keyword in config file gfxboot vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image. I've gone through the above about 6 times each with the same results. I have also tried the above with the partitioning unchanged, and using gparted, with SDA3 formatted to ext4, windows D:\ reduced to 8Gb providing a 175Gb unallocated space - all to no avail. Further information: During my attempt to load 11.10, I notice that on the page which offers 3 options of loading, the first in the list includes the statement 'install INSIDE windows...' whereas the on line help shows 'install ALONGSIDE windows...'. (my caps for emphasis) I have double checked that I am using the correct download - not the install within windows option.

• Problems to boot, Ubuntu entry does not work anymore

  A few months I decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my PC alongside with my Windows 7 partition. In order to do that and avoid any mistake, I followed these steps: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/05/17/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7/2/ Everything was going well until I decided to update to the 12.10 realese. I don't know what happened, but after I updated my Ubuntu, it stoped working, it didn't even launched, when I turned on my pc and choose to run "Ubuntu 12.04" on the Grub Screen, a weird messaged appeared. Well, so I decided to install the Ubuntu 12.10 and forget about the 12.04 partition, no problem. I erased the partitions used for the Ubuntu 12.04 with EaseUS partition Manager. However, when I start my PC, there is still the option of "Ubuntu 12.04" to chose, is that bad? And what about now, can I use the Windows Installer of Ubuntu ( http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/install-ubuntu-with-windows ) to install the Ubuntu 12.10 ? What should I do to have Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7 in dual boot again? Thanks; Thales.

• Whats a good host for an active vBulletin site?

  I've been switching hosts using a VPS each time and I'm just really not sure I'm finding the right VPS's. I've used a VPS from burst.net & rubyringtech and I just feel like it's slowly killing my site because of the slow speed. I really don't know if it's the network or the VPS itself but I really wish to fix this. When I TOP into the VPS peak times it shows this: top - 03:18:56 up 16:33, 1 user, load average: 1.33, 1.40, 1.33 Tasks: 30 total, 1 running, 29 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 27.2%us, 13.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 59.2%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 1048576k total, 679712k used, 368864k free, 0k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached And pages take atleast a good 2-3 minutes to load. I have only like 50-60 members on the forum also. I had a shared hosting account and the forum was lightning fast.... Is a VPS a bad idea? :\ What should I do to fix this? I'm running lighttpd with xcache, and the latest mysql + php version. The server is a intel i7 2600 w/ 1gb uplink (I think the 1gb uplink is a lie because I've tested the network and the highest download speed I've seen was 20mb/s from a code.google page) All in all I've seen people talking about linode. Should I try them? I honestly don't need a dedicated server yet it's only 50-70 members online. What should I do? I really want a VPS because I enjoy root access. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• How can I reduce the amount of time it takes to fully regression test an application ready for release?

  An app I work on is being developed with a modified version of scrum. If you are not familiar with scrum, it's just an alternative approach to a more traditional watefall model, where a series of features are worked on for a set amount of time known as a sprint. The app is written in C# and makes use of WPF. We use Visual C# 2010 Express edition as an IDE. If we work on a sprint and add in a few new features, but do not plan to release until a further sprint is complete, then regression testing is not an issue as such. We just test the new features and give the app a good once over. However, if a release is planned that our customers can download - a full regression test is factored in. In the past this wasn't a big deal, it took 3 or 4 days and the devs simply fix up any bugs found in the regression phase, but now, as the app is getting larger and larger and incorporating more and more features, the regression is spanning out for weeks. I am interested in any methods that people know of or use that can decrease this time. At the moment the only ideas I have are to either start writing Unit Tests, which I have never fully tried out in a commercial environment, or to research the possibilty of any UI Automation API's or tools that would allow me to write a program to perform a series of batch tests. I know literally nothing about the possibilities of UI automation so any information would be valuable. I don't know that much about Unit testing either, how complicated can the tests be? Is it possible to get Unit tests to use the UI? Are there any other methods I should consider? Thanks for reading, and for any advice in advance.

• Incomplete Ubuntu 12.04 install dual-boot XP

  This weekend has been the 1st time I've tried to install Ubuntu. On the initial install, (I am using a USB) the installation went all the way through and asked to restart when completed. I was not able to get grub to boot and kept going through Windows. After some research I found some articles on updating/reinstalling grub, so I followed those. I finally got grub to load after a day but there was no Windows option only the Ubuntu 12.04 which when I selected it only gave me a fatal error 17. I booted from the USB again and deleted the partitions and installed again. This time I got an error 15. I then booted through XP and downloaded the WUBI.exe and uninstalled Ubuntu and reinstalled again. The installation went to the very end and then gave an error message (which I don't remember exactly what it said) something along the lines of checking my logs on my C drive. I then uninstalled Ubuntu and removed the wubi.exe file and wiped my USB and did the download to the USB again. Booted through USB and ran the install process again. It again went through the install process but after creating username and password and hitting continue, the installation dialogue box disappears and the mouse spinning wheel is displayed, but I do not receive the prompt to restart. I can still access the side menu for Ubuntu but the wheel keeps spinning. How do I get Ubuntu to install properly?

  Over the weekend I worked a little more on my ACS2 sample. Instead of writing it all down, I decided to quickly record four short videos that cover the relevant features and code. Have fun ;) Part 1 – Overview This video does a quick walkthrough of the solution and shows the web application part. This includes driving the sign in UI via JavaScript (thanks Matias) as well as the registration logic I wrote about here. watch Part 2 – SOAP Service and Client The sample app also exposes a WCF SOAP service. This video shows how to wire up the service to ACS and hows how to create a client that first requests a token from an IdP and then sends this token to ACS. watch Part 3 – REST Service and Client This part shows how to set up a WCF REST service that consumes SWT tokens from ACS. Unfortunately there is currently no standard WIF plumbing for REST. For the service integration I had to combine a lot of code from different sources (kzu, zulfiq) as well as the WIF SDK and OAuth CTPs together. The Silverlight Client shows ho to sign in to the application using a registered identity provider (including web identities) and using the resulting SWT token to call our REST service. • Can we use Google Earth images by applying our Unity3D mesh ?

  We are developing a commercial app for iOS and Android. The app will display development plans(architectural drawings) in a real world 3D environment. The app will work by creating a Unity3D mesh, applies a google earth image as the texture then draws out 3d lines(architectural drawings) over the Unity Mesh. Question: We are unsure if this is allowed under Google's terms and agreements? See quoted text below. In the bold text below its a little vague whether what we are doing(explained above) is violating their terms and agreements. What do you think? Does anyone know how we contact google to ask them? You may not mass download or use bulk feeds of any Content, including but not limited to extracting numerical latitude or longitude coordinates, geocoding, text-based directions, imagery, visible map data, or Places data (including business listings) for use in other applications. You also may not trace Google Maps or Earth as the basis for tracing your own maps or geographic materials. For full details, please read section 10.3.1 of the Maps/Earth API Terms of Service. • LiveCD not booting/can't install Ubuntu 11.04

  So, i got a new laptop somedays ago and as usualy, i went formated it to install Ubuntu. Download 11.04 and burned it on my pendrive using my old laptop (running 11.04). When i tryed to boot from the LiveUSB on my new laptop, it just showed me some weird graphics and if i select any option (can't see what im selecting), it gives me a black screen and that is all. Then i tryed to boot with this LiveUSB on my old laptop, and it worked just fine ._. Burned a CD with Ubuntu 11.04 (64bits) and the problem continue. Then i tought it could be my CD Driver, since the laptop is new and all... burned a Windows 7 64 bits DVD and it worked just fine. Also, if i check the CD/Pendrive inside Windows Seven, all the files there are ok. Anyone have any idea of what can be? I found lots of questions about this, but none of them had the weird menus i'm getting ._. oohh... i also get a "prefix is not set" before the weird menu appears :S My sis specs: Intel Core i5 2400 Intel HD 3000 4gb DDR3 If anyone can help, i will be really greatfull ._.

• Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on install using VMware Player on Windows 7

  At my job, we're migrating to Ubuntu 12.04 from 10.10 (we skipped a generation), so everyone needs to make one or more new Virtual Machines for 12.04 on their Windows 7 workstation. The problem is, only some have had success while most encounter a hang during install. I was tasked with researching this problem and here are my findings (while somewhat inconclusive) I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware Player, using versions 4.0.2, 4.0.4, and 5.0.0 but every install hangs at "retrieving file 55 of 129." Additionally I have installed before updating the VMware tools, as well as after (one can pre-download them) with every install hanging at "retrieving file 55 of 129." The file i was using for the above two is called: ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso I have burned a disc with ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso and tried to install it, and later tried ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso (which is not what i want but i wanted to see if it would work), but both times I get "PXE-E53: No boot filename recieved PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. Operating System not found" This is all in VMware and the goal is to find a settings recipe that will allow an unbroken 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 install from an .iso hosted on the Windows OS. • How to mount a network drive?

  Ok so I'm trying to set-up a home file server. I'm thinking about just setting it up as an FTP server, no particular reason other than I'm familiar with FTP and samba tends to be very frustrating. Basically the set-up I'm going for, is to be-able to create multiple user accounts for the server and restrict or allow access to specific folders on each user. FTP is the only way (that I know of) to accomplish a set-up like that. My question is how can I mount an FTP server as a drive in Ubuntu so that all my applications can access it just like any other driver or folder. An example would be downloading 12.10 via torrent when it comes out, I would like to be able to tell transmission to just download the file straight to my ftp server. I know how to do this in Windows, its actually very easy. But I cant figure it out in Ubuntu. I have tried using the "connect to server" option in nautilus, and it works, but it doesn’t give me the result I want, most applications don’t see the folder, while others can. Also I am open to options other than FTP if anyone has any suggestions. I've looked into FreeNAS but that doesn’t seem to allow me to control the user accounts the way I want to. Then after all is said and done I would still need a way to mount the shares as a drive in Ubuntu. The ability to mount network drives in windows is one of my favourite features, but seeing how Ubuntu is now my daily OS and has been for about 4 years, I really need a way to accomplish the same thing in Ubuntu. Also a GUI would be preferable, seeing as there will be multiple people using this server, I would like it to be as easy as possible. EDIT: this link here seems to be almost exactly what I'm wanting to do, if I could find a GUI that can do this ill be almost set. then I would just need to find a way to hide specific folders from certain users.

• Trouble installing Java

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I wanted to install Java and so I downloaded the 32-bit self extracting .bin file from http://www.java.com and tried to install it according to their instruction. First I made the file an executable one. Then created /usr/java/. After that I have to run this command: ./jre-7u<version>-linux-i586.bin. But I'm stuck here. My Java version is Java 6 u32. When I enter the command it says "no such file or directory". What to do? Please help. Also I'm trying to install 32-bit Java on my 64-bit Precise. Could that possibly be the problem? I tried to follow second answer by Jonas Christensen. I tried to open it, it says file is an unknown type. I tried the terminal command: ./jre-6u31-linux-i586.bin. But it gave this: Unpacking... Checksumming... Extracting... ./jre-6u32-linux-i586.bin: 86: ./jre-6u32-linux-i586.bin: ./install.sfx.5736: not found Failed to extract the files. Please refer to the Troubleshooting section of the Installation Instructions on the download page for more information.

• ATI HD5450 w/ Ubuntu 14?

  So, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 right now. Last night I realised that I'm way behind as we're up to 14! Decided to run the updater and figured I'd take the path of least resistance (but lengthy choice) of going 12.04 - 12.10 - 13.xx - 14.xx. So I download the first packet and then get an error message about my graphics card perhaps not working in 12.10. Now part of the reason I was looking to upgrade is because I get (and have always had) this strange occasional flickering - now that I have two screens it's just on the second monitor.....oddly this is not the same port that was giving issues before). The graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD5450 and I have the Catalyst (I think it's 13 or 14) driver installed - last night. It could be that the graphics card has never worked properly...I bought the PC new and with an "upgraded" video card and it's always suffered with this flicker. I just figured that the drivers weren't right or something. So I have 3 questions: 1) is my video card broken or is the driver letting it down and causing the flicker? 2) will it be able to handle the upgrade to 14 via 13? Or should I cut my losses and get something newer? 3) if I should get something newer....what should I get ( Thanks in advance....

• A quick tip for those working with the Windows Phone 7 AD SDK.

  One thing that I’ve noticed in several apps in the Windows Phone 7 marketplace is the ad chopping off on the right hand side. I decided that my next Windows Phone 7 app will be ad supported so why not sign up for the Advertising SDK and investigate this issue. *Note: If you want to see this in an actual app then download the free app called “Road Rage”. So here is an example of what I am talking about: You will notice that the right hand side of the AD is chopped off using the default ad banner. You can see the border on the left hand side clearly. So, what exactly is going on? Let’s take a look at this in the designer. From this image we can see it clearer, the margin of the grid that the ad is contained in needs to be removed. By default, the ContentPanel in a Windows Phone Page has a margin already set on it. See below for an example of this: <!--ContentPanel - place additional content here--> <Grid x:Name="ContentPanel" Grid.Row="1" Margin="12,0,12,0"> </Grid> If you simply remove that margin then your ad will display properly as shown below. It’s strange that I’ve seen this in multiple WP7 applications in the marketplace. If you are trying to make money off Ads, you would probably want to make sure the full ad is displayed. • Day in the Life of Agile - The Forge Michigan November 27, 2012

  Went to training at The Forge yesterday and did a Day in the life of Agile with Pillar.  It was pretty good. Check them out at: http://pillartechnology.com/ Abstract: A single-day agile project simulation that is engaging, educational, provocative, and fun. This simulation introduces concepts like time-boxed iterations, User Stories, collective estimation, commitment to a product owner for iteration scope, formal verification ritual at iteration conclusion, tracking velocity, and making results big and visible through charts. The exercise is designed to simulate not only how agile teams and practices work, but the inevitable challenges that arise as teams attempt to adopt such practices. One of the best parts of this training was getting some hands on experience with agile.  We used a program called Scratch to create an arcade video game.  Our team chose Frogger.  We had 3 iterations at 20 minutes each.  I think we did pretty good but in the panic of trying to get a bunch done in only 20 minutes made it interesting.
