• Struggling with proper way to setup Permissions on Linux/Apache Web Server

  Your expert experience and assistance is great, greatly appreciated here. I have been running a LAMP server for a long time, yet I still struggle with the best way to set file & directory permissions for FTP and WWW protocol activity. My Control panel is WHM/cPanel (not that it makes a difference), and out-of-the box: files are owned by the user account setup in WHM (eg, "abc") files have a group setting of "abc" as well file permissions are created with 644 directories are owned by "abc" directories have a group setting of "abc" directories permissions are created with 0755 Again, these are the default permission settings. Now everything is fine with FTP activity, but please advise me if any of these file/directory settings create issues, especially with security. Here's where my struggle comes into play. I have PHP apps that allow a visitor to create, edit, rename, delete, etc. sub-directories and files in certain selected directories. PHP runs as "nobody" on my server. So in order to get my PHP/Web apps to work, I have had to: chown nobody * chgrp nobody * chmod 0777 * to everything in these certain & selected sub-directories. I know this is probably a huge security whole (so don't ask me for any links :) but how should I set all the permissions to allow my FTP user to do his thing while allowing the PHP apps to do their thing will also "minimizing" any security risks and exposures? I know that big CMS systems like Drupal, Joomla, WordPress and so on, handle this. Thanks ahead of time for reading through this and offering your expert advice!

• How to disable monitor "sleep" on Ubuntu without access to X?

  I just received a CuBox (basically a tiny ARM based PC). It comes pre-installed with Ubuntu, and I did not (yet) want to fiddle with the OS itself. My aim is to have it automaticall start a browser in fullscrren upon boot. Using chromium with the "--kiosk" flag works perfectly in that regard. But now I have the problem that the screen turns off after a certain time. I managed to turn off the screen saver using: gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled --type=bool false And tried to turn off the power management using: gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/ac_sleep_display --type=int 0 and gconftool-2 -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout/sleep_display_ac --type=int 0 Neither of the power-management commands worked. Theoretically I could hook up a mouse and keyboard and configure it manually. But I want to learn how to do it over the console. The box will eventually be only reachable via SSH. So I'd like to be able to trouble-shoot it later. I don't quite know where to look for. I searched the gconf tree using gconftool-2 -S for anything related to the terms power, idle and sleep but did not find anything promising. Maybe it's not even gconf related... Any ideas what else I could look for?

• Can sendmail be configured to discard routed email that has been rejected by the next hop?

  Background: We have a handful of hosts (running sendmail) acting as the MXs for a few domains each. Each domain is handled via the sendmail/cf /etc/mail/virtusertable, with a set of known recipients and a catch-all reject rule. Mail to postmaster on each host is aliased to root, and root is aliased to root+<host>@ourdomain.com. The MX for ourdomain.com is Google Apps, and [email protected] is a simple group that forwards to the admins. Google Apps will reject some emails at the SMTP stage, usually because of illegal attachments (instead of accepting them and filing them as spam). Problem: Given a particular spam email sent to a domain in a virtusertable entry: If the recipient address rejects the mail, then sendmail will try and send a DSN to the sender. If that sender also rejects the mail (because it's a falsified sender, and the MX for the sender rejects the mail as spam), then sendmail sends a DSN to the postmaster. The routing detailed above takes place, and...Google Apps rejects the mail as well. sendmail now gives up with a "savemail panic", and leaves the mail in the queue forever. Our mail queue fills up with garbage Is there any way I can get sendmail to discard messages that have been rejected by the next virtusertable hop (i.e. after step 1 in the Problem description)? Or does anyone have any other solutions to this?

• How to speed up request/response to django using apache or another solution?

  Hey all, I'm mainly a developer, but every now and again I jump into the sys-admin position. For the most part I've gotten away with deploying php and python apps using apache. I write today because I'm starting to research faster alternatives to apache, yet still have some of the core features I require like put and delete methods and the ability to connect to a socket via apache. ( This I have not tried, but might be a nice whistle if I ever employ comet on my apps. ) As you've probably guessed, I use javascript exclusively for all my websites utilizing deep linking for SEO support. The main areas that I'm looking to increase performance is the connection between the django apps and the web server to the client response. Every day I work my best to keep the smallest memory foot print as possible, however I am getting to the end of my rope when it comes to working with apache. In general, keep in mind that I'm just starting this research so I'm looking more for material to read then solutions at this moment. My main questions: Am I missing something about apache that makes it faster then everything else? What would be a good server environment to deploy just static files one? What are some of the leading open-source and paid alternatives?

• Windows Server 2008 IIS Random disconnect

  I am having a bit of a quirk with my IIS server. I'm running my IIS with 2 sets of IPs configured, one in the 192 range and the other in 172 range. I then have multiple apps which will talk to this server for information. Server has no AV or firewalls configured. I noticed that my apps when talking to the server on the 172 range, at random intervals, the server would just not respond. My apps would then disconnect and just try again, and every thing would be fine. This doesn't happen on the 192 range. So what I did is on a Linux box I did a watch command and to wget a file every half second on the 172 and 192 IPs. I noticed the same issue, every once in awhile wget on the 172 range would not get through, but there is no issues at all on 192. Thus I went around to Wireshark and did a dump. • Is there a remote desktop or vnc app for the IPad that properly handles Bluetooth keyboard shortcuts?

  I've tried 4 or 5 remote desktop apps, the most notable being Jump Desktop and Splashtop Streamer. Most of these remote desktop apps have some sort of on-screen keyboard for typing with the IPad, including special keys like shift, control, alt. The special keys act like "sticky keys" meaning they stay depressed until another key is pressed, to make it easier to do key combinations. Even non-standard keyboard combinations like shift+enter work, in this sticky sense. When using a Bluetooth keyboard with the remote desktop apps, both Jump and Splashtop Streamer recognize the shift + letter combination for doing capital letters. However, generically pressing shift, cntrl, or alt does not depress the sticky on screen shift buttons or do anything at all. Only a few combinations are recognized (again like shift+letter, cntrl+C). Most combinations do not work (shift+enter, alt+tab). Even having the keyboard shortcuts work like sticky keys (press shift then enter, not both at once) would be much better than the limited functionality they have now. Is there an app, jailbreak app, or workaround that lets me use bluetooth keyboard properly with remote desktop on the ipad?

• OS X Application icons missing after filesystem tampering

  A while back I installed some Google software, I forget what it was, but it was something that attached itself to Google Chrome and was un-uninstallable short of uninstalling all of Chrome. It was a total pain in the a$$. Anyways, I was trying to put up a fight before going nuclear and just wiping Chrome, and during that fight, something went wrong (i.e., I didn't know what I was doing). I remember messing around with the Applications folder somehow. I don't remember what exactly I did, but it perhaps involved some interchanging between the /Applications and /User/Username/Applications folders? Definitely some tampering in those areas, I'm sure at least about that. Anyways, I've since updated and restarted my computer. Now, while all my apps work fine, many of them have blank icons - not on the Dock, those icons are fine, but in Spotlight search results, etc. Currently, my /Applications folder contains only OS X-cooked-in applications. My ~/Applications folder contains cooked in apps AND post-OS/third-party apps. There hasn't been any functionality deficit so far, but I don't like working on a machine where something isn't how it should be. I know my information was vague, but does anyone know what went wrong / how to fix it? OS X Mavericks 10.9.3

• Server redirect

  I have asp.net app XYZ which requires SSL. I am supposed to work with IIS that has only one Web Site - DefaultWebSite - containing multiple apps and virtual directories (3rd party). So, my app is located at domain.com/XYZ. I have to meet these conditions: 1.) requesting DefaultWebSite (domain.com) will run my app. It could redirect to ../XYZ, but I would rather not to. If it has to be done this way, requesting DefaultWebSite or my app over both HTTP and HTTPS will always ends up with redirecting to https://domain.com/XYZ 2.) I can't touch any other apps or virtual directories, can't create additional Web Site, can't set DefaultWebSite to require SSL, ... EDIT: 3.) transmitted data (GET or POST) must be preserved I tried to: set Web Site root directory to my app, but it this caused other apps to crash because of my Web.config (not sure why). set up HTTP redirect on DefaultWebSite to https://domain.com/XYZ. This seems to work correctly, but this doesn't work if user requests my app directly (redirected to domain.com/XYZ/XYZ, or redirect loop). set up Default Document, but this seems to work only if it is located in the Web Site root directory. I know I could write simple .aspx with Response.Redirect, but... is there any better solution? Am I missing something?

  I'm trying to create android apps which able sending data through wifi connection to my laptop Apache Server and MySQL database. I use the samsung galaxy tab 10.1 as my mobile device. and the protocol i used is HttpGet or HttpPost. And i use XAMPP( with Apache& SQL) to do the server and process the php. But, due to android cannot detect adhoc network from laptop, i use Virtual Router ( for window 7) to create virtual access point and make the tablet able connect to my laptop. But the problem is: [1] in my apps (client-android), where the httpget or httppost to which url? localhost in my laptop- 127.0.0.1 or localhost in android 10.0.0.1? or the ip address of the virtual router? [2]so, if i want access from android to the localhost(laptop-Apache) to call the php to run? which port? which ip address /url that i need to put in android apps(httpget)? and do i need to modify anything in httpconfig for XAMPP? thanks alot.

  I have an app that's accessible via 1.2.3.4/myapp. The app is installed in /var/www/myapp. I've set up a subdomain(apps.mydomain.com) that points to 1.2.3.4. I want the server to point to var/www/myapp if I type apps.mydomain.com/myapp, how do I do that? I have experience creating virtual hosts(lots of them) locally but I'm lost because it's now in production and it's a little different. • Android app crashes on emulator - logCat shows no errors

  I have just added the SherlockActionBar library to my android project. After some small changes (FragmentActivity - SherlockFragmentActivity, getActionBar() - getSupportActionBar(), imports) it all compiled nicely. After I run the app, however, the debugger stops, as though it had encountered an exception. However, there are no errors shown in the LogCat output. I just can't wrap my head around what's going on. • How did my email end up in spam? Spam only filters this specific email, other email contents work

  My website has users buy our products and when the purchase completes, it sends the user an email. However, this email always ends up in spam! When the user first registers, the site also sends an email, this email however is not filtered and goes into the normal inbox. I'm not quite sure why this is so, gmail vaguely tells me that " It's similar to messages that were detected by our spam filters." So I'm thinking that I need to reword the following email better. Can I get some tips? • How to Sync Any Browser’s Bookmarks With Your iPad or iPhone

  Apple makes it easy to synchronize bookmarks between the Safari browser on a Mac and the Safari browser on iOS, but you don’t have to use Safari — or a Mac — to sync your bookmarks back and forth. You can do this with any browser. Whether you’re using Chrome, Firefox, or even Internet Explorer, there’s a way to sync your browser bookmarks so you can access your same bookmarks on your iPad. Safari on a Mac Apple’s iCloud service is the officially supported way to sync data with your iPad or iPhone. It’s included on Macs, but Apple also offers similar iCloud bookmark syncing features for Windows. On a Mac, this should be enabled by default. To check whether it’s enabled, you can launch the System Preferences panel on your Mac, open the iCloud preferences panel, and ensure the Safari option is checked. If you’re using Safari on Windows — well, you shouldn’t be. Apple is no longer updating Safari for Windows. iCloud allows you to synchronize bookmarks between other browsers on your Windows system and Safari on your iOS device, so Safari isn’t necessary. Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome via iCloud To get started, download Apple’s iCloud Control Panel application for Windows and install it. Launch the iCloud Control Panel and log in with the same iCloud account (Apple ID) you use on your iPad or iPhone. You’ll be able to enable Bookmark syncing with Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome. Click the Options button to select the browser you want to synchronize bookmarks with. (Note that bookmarks are called “favorites” in Internet Explorer.) You’ll be able to access your synced bookmarks in the Safari browser on your iPad or iPhone, and they’ll sync back and forth automatically over the Internet. Google Chrome Sync Google Chrome also has its own built-in sync feature and Google provides an official Chrome app for iPad and iPhone. If you’re a Chrome user, you can set up Chrome Sync on your desktop version of Chrome — you should already have this enabled if you have logged into your Chrome browser. You can check if this Chrome Sync is enabled by opening Chrome’s settings screen and seeing whether you’re signed in. Click the Advanced sync settings button and ensure bookmark syncing is enabled. Once you have Chrome Sync set up, you can install the Chrome app from the App Store and sign in with the same Google account. Your bookmarks, as well as other data like your open browser tabs, will automatically sync. This can be a better solution because the Chrome browser is available for so many platforms and you gain the ability to synchronize other browser data, such as your open browser tabs, between your devices. Unfortunately, the Chrome browser is slower than Apple’s own Safari browser on iPad and iPhone because of the way Apple limits third-party browsers, so using it involves a trade-off. Manual Bookmark Sync in iTunes iTunes also allows you to sync bookmarks between your computer and your iPad or iPhone. It does this the old-fashioned way, by initiating a manual sync when your device is plugged in via USB. To access this option, connect your device to your computer, select the device in iTunes, and click the Info tab. This is the more outdated way of synchronizing your bookmarks. This feature may be useful if you want to create a one-time copy of your bookmarks from your PC, but it’s nowhere near ideal for regular syncing. You don’t have to use this feature, just as you really don’t have to use iTunes anymore. In fact, this option is unavailable if you’ve set up iCloud syncing in iTunes. After you set up bookmark syncing via iCloud or Chrome Sync, bookmarks will sync immediately after you save, remove, or edit them.

The highlights include: iPhone and iPad connectivity support via a new iOS SDK Integrated Authentication so developers can configure user authentication via Microsoft Account, Facebook, Twitter, and Google. New server-side Mobile Service script modules Access to Structured Storage, Windows Azure Blob, Table, Queues, and ServiceBus Email services through partnership with SendGrid SMS & voice services through partnership with Twilio Mobile Services hosting expanded to west coast US The iOS SDK I’m excited to share that we've announced the release of an under-development iOS client SDK for Windows Azure Mobile Services. The iOS SDK joins the Windows 8 SDK launched with Windows Azure Mobile Services as well as client SDKs released by Xamarin for MonoTouch and MonoDroid.  The native iOS SDK is for developers programming in Objective-C on the iPhone and iPad platforms. The SDK gives developers the same level of access to data storage using dynamic schematization that is available for Windows 8. Also, iOS applications can use the same authentication options available in Mobile Services. While full iOS support is still in development, the libraries are currently available on GitHub. • How Can I Start an Incognito/Private Browsing Window from a Shortcut?

  Sometimes you just want to pop the browser open for a quick web search without reloading all your saved tabs; read on as we show a fellow reader how to make a quick private-browsing shortcut. Dear How-To Geek, I came up with a solution to my problem, but I need your help implementing it. I typically have a ton of tabs open in my web browser and, when I need to free up system resources when gaming or using a resource intense application, I shut down the web browser. The problem arises when I find myself needing to do quick web search while the browser is shut down. I don’t want to open it up, load all the tabs, and waste the resources in doing so all for a quick Google search. The perfect solution, it would seem, is to open up one of Chrome’s Incognito windows: it loads separate, it won’t open up all the old tabs, and it’s perfect for a quick Google search. Is there a way to launch Chrome with a single Incognito window open without having to open the browser in the normal mode (and load the bazillion tabs I have sitting there)? Sincerely, Tab Crazy That’s a rather clever work around to your problem. Since you’ve already done the hard work of figuring out the solution you need, we’re more than happy to help you across the finish line. The magic you seek is available via what are known as “command line options” which allow you to add additional parameters and switches onto a command.   By appending the command the Chrome shortcut uses, we can easily tell it to launch in Incognito mode. (And, for other readers following along at home, we can do the same thing with other browsers like Firefox). First, let’s look at Chrome’s default shortcut: If you right click on it and select the properties menu, you’ll see where the shortcut points: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" If you run that shortcut, you’ll open up normal browsing mode in Chrome and your saved tabs will all load. What we need to do is use the command line switches available for Chrome and tell it that we want it to launch an Incognito window instead. Doing so is as simple as appending the end of the “Target” box’s command line entry with -incognito, like so: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -incognito We’d also recommend changing the icon to it’s easy to tell the default Chrome shortcut apart from your new Incognito shortcut. When you’re done, make sure to hit OK/Apply at the button to save the changes. You can recreate the same private-browsing-shortcut effect with other major web browsers too. Repeat shortcut editing steps we highlighted above, but change out the -incognito with -private (for Firefox and Internet Explorer) and -newprivatetab (for Opera). With just a simple command line switch applied, you can now launch a lightweight single browser window for those quick web searches without having to stop your game and load up all your saved tabs.   Google has rolled their wallet out for several chains; I see the NFC readers in Walgreen's when I'm sent their for milk.  But Isis has been relatively quiet until now.  As of last week they have finally launched in their two test cities: Austin, and Salt Lake City.  Below are the supported carriers and phones as of now, but more phones will be added later. Of course iPhone owners have no wallet since Apple didn't included an NFC chip. To start using Isis, you have to take your NFC-capable phone to your carrier's store to get the SIM replaced with a more sophisticated one that has a secure element configured for Isis.  The "secure element" is the cryptographic logic that secures mobile payments.  Carriers like the secure element in the SIM while non-carriers (like Google) prefer the secure element in the phone's electronics. (I'm not entirely sure if you could support both Isis and Google Wallet on the same phone.  Anybody know?) Then you can download the Isis app from Google Play and load your cards.  Most credit cards are supported, and there's a process to verify the credit cards are valid.  Then you can select from the list of participating retailers to "follow."  Selecting a retailer allows that retailer to give you offers via the app. The app is well done and easy to use.  You can select a default payment type and also switch between them easily.  When the phone is tapped on the reader, there are two exchanges of information.  The payment information is transferred, and then the Isis "SmartTap" information which includes optional loyalty number and digital coupons.  Of course the value of mobile wallets comes from the ease of handling all three data types (i.e. payment, loyalty, offers). • Incomplete upgrade 12.04 to 12.10

  Everything was running smoothly. Everything had been downloaded from Internet, packages had been installed and a prompt asked for some obsolete programs/files to be removed or kept. After that the computer crashed and and to manually force a shutdown. I turned it on again and surprise I was on 12.10! Still the upgrade was not finished! How can I properly finish that upgrade? • Social Search: Looking for Love

  For marketers and enterprise executives who have placed a higher priority on and allocated bigger budgets to search over social, it might be time to notice yet another shift that’s well underway. Social is search. Search marketing was always more of an internal slam-dunk than other digital initiatives. Even a C-suite that understood little about the new technology world knew it’s a good thing when people are able to find you. Google was the new Yellow Pages. Only with Google, you could get your listing first without naming yourself “AAAA Plumbing.” There were wizards out there who could give your business prominence in front of people who were specifically looking for what you offered. Other search giants like Bing also came along to offer such ideal matchmaking possibilities. But what if the consumer isn’t using a search engine to find what they’re looking for? And what if the search engines started altering their algorithms so that search placement manipulation was more difficult? Both of those things have started to happen. Experian Hitwise’s numbers show that visits to the major search engines in the UK dropped 100 million through August. Search engines are far from dead, or even challenged. But more and more, the public is discovering the sites and brands they need through advice they get via social, not search. You’ll find the worlds of social and search increasingly co-mingling as well. Search behemoths Google and Bing are including Facebook and Google+ into their engines. Meanwhile, Facebook and Twitter have done some integration of global web search into their platforms. So what makes social such a worthwhile search entity for brands? First and foremost, the consumer has demonstrated a behavior of acting on recommendations from social connections. A cry in the wilderness like, “Anybody know any good catering companies?” will usually yield a link (and an endorsement) from a friend such as “Yeah, check out Just-Cheese-Balls Catering.” There’s no such human-driven force/influence behind the big search engines. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and others call it “Friend Mining.” It is, in essence, searching for answers from friends’ experiences as opposed to faceless code. And Facebook has all of those friends’ experiences already stored as data. eMarketer says search in an $18 billion business, and investors are really into it. So no shock Facebook’s ready to leverage their social graph into relevant search. What do you do about all this as a brand? For one thing, it’s going to lead to some interesting paid marketing opportunities around the corner, including Sponsored Stories bought against certain queries, inserting deals into search results, capitalizing on social search results on mobile, etc. Apart from that, it might be time to stop mentally separating social and search in your strategic planning and budgeting. Courting your fans on social will cumulatively add up to more valuable, personally endorsed recommendations for your company when a consumer conducts a search on social. Fail to foster those relationships, fail to engage, fail to provide knock-em-dead customer service, fail to wow them with your actual products and services…and you’ll wind up with the visibility you deserve in social search results.

• Is hidden content (display: none;) -indexed- by search engines? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How bad is it to use display: none in CSS? We've established on this site before (in this question) that, since there are so many legitimate uses for hiding content with display: none; when creating interactive features, that sites aren't automatically penalised for content that is hidden this way (so long as it doesn't look algorithmically spammy). Google's Webmaster guidelines also make clear that a good practice when using content that is initially legitimately hidden for interactivity purposes is to also include the same content in a <noscript> tag, and Google recommend that if you design and code for users including users with screen readers or javascript disabled, then 9 times out of 10 good relevant search rankings will follow (though their specific advice seems more written for cases where javascript writes new content to the page). JavaScript: Place the same content from the JavaScript in a tag. If you use this method, ensure the contents are exactly the same as what’s contained in the JavaScript, and that this content is shown to visitors who do not have JavaScript enabled in their browser. So, best practice seems pretty clear. What I can't find out is, however, the simple factual matter of whether hidden content is indexed by search engines (but with potential penalties if it looks 'spammy'), or, whether it is ignored, or, whether it is indexed but with a lower weighting (like <noscript> content is, apparently). (for bonus points it would be great to know if this varies or is consistent between display: none;, visibility: hidden;, etc, but that isn't crucial). This is different to the other questions on display:none; and SEO - those are about good and bad practice and the answers are discussions of good and bad practice, I'm interested simply in the factual 'Yes or no' question of whether search engines index, or ignore, content that is in display: none; - something those other questions' answers aren't totally clear on. One other question has an answer, "Yes", supported by a link to an article that doesn't really clear things up: it establishes that search engines can spot that text is hidden, it discusses (again) whether hidden text causes sites to be marked as spam, and ultimately concludes that in mid 2011, Google's policy on hidden text was evolving, and that they hadn't at that time started automatically penalising display:none; or marking it as spam. It's clear that display: none; isn't always spam and isn't always treated as spam (many Google sites use it...): but this doesn't clear up how, or if, it is indexed. What I will do will be to follow the guidelines and make sure that all the content that is initially hidden which regular users can explore using javascript-driven interactivity is also structured in way that noscript/screenreader users can use. So I'm not interested in best practice, opinions etc because best practice seems to be really clear: accessibility best practices boosts SEO. But I'd like to know what exactly will happen: whether any display: none; content I have alongside <noscript> or otherwise accessibility-optimised content will be be ignored, or indexed again, or picked up to compare against the <noscript> content but not indexed... etc.

• View overlapping with RelativeLayout on Android 1.5

  I am having a problem with views overlapping in a RelativeLayout on Android 1.5... Everything is working fine on Android 1.6 and above. I do understand that Android 1.5 has some issues with RelativeLayout, but I was not able to find anything on StackOverflow or the android beginners group for my specific problem. My layout consists of four sections, each of which are made up of a TextView, a Gallery, and another TextView aligned vertically: Running Apps Recent Apps Services Processes When all four sets of these items are displayed everything works fine. However, my app allows the user to specify that some of these are not displayed. If the user turns off Running Apps, Recent Apps, or Services then the remaining sections all of a sudden overlap eachother. Here is my code for the layout. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.
