• What languages should I learn before I go to college? [closed]

  I've been working with PHP, MySQL, and some html for the past 3-4 years now just as a hobby. I'm only 19 and college is going to come soon, I want to go for Web and Software development and/or Network Security and Administration, I know the networking is a whole different ballpark, but as for programming, which languages do you suggest I get under my belt before college? I was thinking the C languages (C++, C#), Java, .NET; Should I learn any more Server Side Scripting languages? Python, Perl, Ruby? I used to be somewhat familiar with writing Java, but haven't written in Java in a good while, what would you suggest? Thanks!

• Need some help fixing fonts (11.04 Alpha 3)

  Hi I changed my Application Font and Window Font to something much better looking but it has a few problems. The font is Umpush Light. It's doing this in the software center: http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/8307/workspace1004.png If I increase the font size from 11 to 12, that problem goes away, but then everything is too large. When I increase it this also happens: http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/6231/workspace1006e.png It starts moving the text in the search box up, and the "All Applications" drop down gets messed up too. It seems like there is too much padding around the font or something. Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?

• Installed ubuntu on Win7 but no application found (no terminal, no browser ?)

  I have installed ubuntu yesterday on my Win7 laptop. Everything was all right. Really nice and easy installation. Congratulations to all you. But I have a problem, I couldnt find any application even no terminal in the installation. And even not possible to install in system settings or software update menu. Sorry for my ignorance but how can I download or install some applications ? Thanks for your support. Marsel

Im upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04 and it says "extracting the upgrade failed there may be a problem with the network or the server." Also when I hit check it says "Could not download all repository indexes The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. • Spurious resets on Ubuntu

  I have a PC running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit, and I do weekly updates, so everything should be up-to-date. Everything is running fine, but sometimes, once-twice a week a complete reset happens. I think it must be software or hardware (perhaps Videocard) related, but I can't figure out what could be wrong. Can anybody suggest some ways, log files, where I could continue to search? By looking just at dmesg/dmesg.0 and Xorg.0.log I got nowhere. I cant find even a user application segfault. Any help is really appreciated.

  I'm putting together a Dom0 and three DomU (all Gentoo) with kernel 3.5.7 and Xen 4.1.1. Each Dom has it's own md (md0 for Dom0, md1 for Dom1 etc). Dom0 works fine so far, however, I'm stuck trying to create DomUs. Checklist: Confirmed no software rendering is taking place (ms performance tool and checking RenderCapability.Tier) Calling freeze on any imaginable object Running app on dual core machine with decent graphic card (NVidia 9600) Disabled any bitmap effect and transparency Checked all marquee controls out there (same issues) Any ideas (or better yet code example)?

  I would like to export some records from an EndNote (reference management software) library and import into a MySQL database. Does anyone have any experience with this? I've tried creating custom EndNote "output styles" containing either comma-delimited values or even SQL code, but have had mixed results, either because EndNote filters out some characters (like `) or because EndNote doesn't (or I can't work out how to make it) escape text, which might include characters like ' and ". I realize this might be a bit off-topic but any help would be appreciated.

  So the wonderful low down on this doozie of a problem: short version: We are building a distribution system for this item of software we're using. Basically we take out build artifact, store it on an ftp server which passes it to multiple clients which execute scripts to patch their servers. Long version: 1 distribution server multiple client servers software: jython 2.5.1, ant 1.8.0, pyro 3.10 The distribution server has an FTP server and a PYRO client running on it. Each client server has a PRYO server running on it. When the PYRO client is told to start the patch procedure then it reads a machine list which contains a list of all the client servers. Then connects to each of the PYRO servers one by one and execute the patch procedure. The procedure is: getPatch (gets the latest patch for that server), StopServer (stops the software that may or maynot be accessing what needs to be patched), Apply patch, StartServer. Each of the processes calls an ANT script that passes with some folder names and other config passes around. The fun part happens when you go to apply the patch. See below for error log. I had to remove the folder names because of NDA reasons. This is where it gets interesting. Running each section of the procedure individually. i.e. running getPatch, StopServer, etc. one at a time manually. This bug doesn't happen. Physically goign to the machine and running the processes it doesn't happen. Only when we call all 4 of the processes one after the other. It occurs during the ApplyPatch phase when an ANT replace script is called on multiple files. We think it might have something to do with the JVM keeping hold of the file for a split second or 2. however this is meant to have been patched according to the bug notes on ant. so in short: • Can't Deploy or Upload Large SSRS 2008 Report from VS or IE

  So far in this project I have two reports in VS2008/BIDS. The first one contains 1 tablix and is about 100k. The second one contains 3 tablixes (tablices?) and is about 257k. I can successfully deploy the smaller report from VS and I can upload it from the Report Manager in IE. I can view/run it from Report Manager and I can get to the Report Server (web service) URL from my browser just fine. Everything is done over HTTPS and there is nothing wrong with the certificates. With the larger report, the error I get in VS is "The operation has timed out" after about 100 seconds. The error when I upload from IE is "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send" after about 130 seconds. In the RSReportServer.config file I tried changing Authentication/EnableAuthPersistence from true to false and restarting the service, but still get the error. I have the key "SecureConnectionLevel" set to 2. Changing this to 0 and turning off SSL is not going to be an option. I added a registry key named "MaxRequestBytes" to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters and set it to 5242880 (5MB) and restarted the HTTP and SRS services as suggested in a forum post by Jin Chen of MSFT. I still cannot upload the larger report. This is on MS SQL 2008 and WS 2003.   I'm running Windows Server 2008 64-bit "workstation" and would like to get corflags.exe. Which SDK do I need to download? Edit: I know about .NET Framework 2.0 Software Development Kit (SDK) (x64) and Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 but I was hoping to find something smaller as these are quite large downloads. Also the note about 2.0 SDK seems to suggest to download the 3.5 one, should I follow that?

My custom WCF application hosting software (written because Windows Server 2008 is not yet available and I'm using WCF TCP bindings) detects this and wants to report itself as down until it can recover the errant service. • How to be a verified publisher ?

  I wrote an app and I want to sell it online, so I uploaded it to my website and tried to download and run it as a test, but a window appeared, it said : "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software ?", and it also said : "Publisher : Unknown Publisher". It's actually a self-signed Java jar file wrapped into an exe file, I self-signed it with Netbeans6.7. I wonder what should I do to be a "known" publisher ? Frank

• Application Specific Paths for DLL Loading when DLL is loaded dynamically

  Hi: I am building a program that uses a very simple plugin system. So far, so good! As you can see the plugins are loaded from a folder, and within the folder are several dll's that are needed but the plugin. My problem is that I can't get the plugin to 'see' the dlls, it just searches the launching applications startup folder, but not the folder where the plugin was loaded from. I have tried several methods: 1. Changing the Current Directory to the plugins folder. 2. Using an inter-op call to SetDllDirectory 3. Adding an entry in the registry to point to a folder where I want it to look (see code below) None of these methods work. What am I missing? As I load the dll plugin dynamically, it does not seem to obey any of the above mentioned methods. What else can I try? • NSIS Silent Install changing default options

  I have a third party application I would like to silent install from the command line. The application is PPLive available at: http://www.pptv.com/en/ It is an NSIS installer, and currently when silently installed, installs toolbars, and additional pieces of software, launches on completion etc. Without repackaging it, how do I control the checkbox options on the pages of the normal installer from the silent command line install. Is it even possible?
