• apache httpd cannot browse through browser

  i've setup apache and php on a virtual machine. everything works fine in the virtual machine. im able to execute php files and run up phpmyadmin connecting to mysql. on my host machine, im able ping and ssh into the remote machines. however, im unable to browse the php files on the host browser using the ip address. in my httpd.conf, im listening to port 80. i enabled the ServerName 192.168.75.102:80 am i missing some settings? port settings maybe?

• Using a CDN for CMS software (multiple sites)

  I'm currently researching ideas for the media management side of a CMS I'm writing. I was looking at having images served from a CDN which is fine on a single site, but I want all sites that run the CMS to make use of a CDN (which will most likely be a custom developed one, rather than a third party service like S3). My main question is: Is a multi-site CDN a good idea? I can't think of a downside, but have probably missed something - obviously they won't share the same folder, as I invisage the requests to be css.cdnsite.com/example.com/style.css or something along those lines. Having multiple sites in the same place will obviously make it easier for us to manage, as well as being cheaper, but then I wonder if it'll be worth it... Long story short: How should the CMS handle user uploaded media (separate installations) Just keep a local copy of all assets and serve them from the same site, like in days of yore? Keep a local copy, force site to use www. and have CDN subdomains per site? Or use a single separate CDN for all sites? Apologies for the length of this question, not sure if this should be multiple questions or not, as all parts are kind of related and could affect each other.

• Allow visitor to print something they bought only 1 time

  I am doing a website that needs to only let the customer print out what they bought 1 time. There are websites that currently do this and they mentioned Adobe Flash Player, Adobe AIR and the Sheet Music Plus AIR application. We would need to block programs like adobe distillation and any virtual printers while only allowing an instant print after purchase. I am not an adobe air developer. Would their be any other ways to accomplish this and what would be the easiest. Thank you. Would their be a way to not allow printing to a virtual printer ie adobe pdf?

• Results stored in a session - good idea?

  To give a bit of background, lets say it's a generic results page, which is paginated so there are X results per page. Generally to do this, I have two queries on the page: to get the total number of results to get the results, limiting by the correct page's resultset However, recently I've been trying to cut down on the queries the site is making, and I thought one way to do this would be to only do the query if any parameters to the page have changed (except of course the page number)? This would then cache all the result id's in a session, which can be sliced when I need to return the correct resultset for that page. I was trying to look around the net to see if there are downsides of this method, but I've found very little information about it. Has anyone done this before? Is it a good idea?

  Is it possible to set timeout directives within a location block to prevent nginx returning a 504 from a long running PHP script (PHP-FPM? location /myurlsegment/ { client_body_timeout 1000000; send_timeout 1000000; fastcgi_read_timeout 1000000; } This has no effect when making a request to example.com/myurlsegment. The timeout occurs after approximately 60 seconds. PHP is configured to allow the script to run until completion (set_time_limit(0)) I don't want to set a global timeout for all scripts.

• Single complex or multiple simple autoload functions [on hold]

  Using the spl_autoload_register(), should I use a single autoload function that contains all the logic to determine where the include files are or should I break each include grouping into it's own function with it's own logic to include the files for the called function? As the places where include files may reside expands so too will the logic of a single function. If I break it into multiple functions I can add functions as new groupings are added, but the functions will be copy/pastes of each other with minor alterations. Currently I have a tool with a single registered autoload function that picks apart the class name and tries to predict where it is and then includes it. Due to naming conventions for the project this has been pretty simple. if has namespace if in template namespace look in Root\Templates else look in Root\Modules\Namespace else look in Root\System if file exists include But we are starting to include Interfaces and Traits into our codebase and it hurts me to include the type of a thing in it's name. So we are looking at instead of a single autoload function that digs through the class name and looks for the file and has increasingly complex logic to it, we are looking at having multiple autoload functions registered. But each one follows the same pattern and any time I see that I get paranoid about code copying. function systemAutoloadFunc logic to create probable filename if filename exists in system include it and return true else return false function moduleAutoloadFunc logic to create probable filename if filename exists in modules include it and return true else return false Every autoload function will follow that pattern and the last of each function if filename exists, include return true else return false is going to be identical code. Or is it just that, paranoia and the multiple functions with some identical code is the best option?

My application relies heavily on the joomla platform, but uses very few features of the CMS (I have to login users etc so I use the _users component of the CMS). Question What is the best way to start removing some of the excess CMS that I don't need? For example when I being building my production site, I will want to avoid creating a load of joomla component database tables etc. I have read that an application can be build from the ground up using just the joomla platform, but i still want to include the _users component and would also like to avoid having to start coding all the session handling aspects. We current have all of our third-party code committed in our repository (after changing .gitignore files) to ensure stability. According to Proper Programming Practices™, we are not supposed to have any third-party packages in our repo. We are supposed to pull them down and include them at build time. How are we to do proper QA and debugging when at any given time our dependencies could push an update that breaks functionality?

• Should I encrypt data in database?

  I have a client, for which I'm going to do an Web application about patient care, managing patients, consults, history, calendars, everything about that basically. The problem is that this is sensitive data, patient history and such. The client insists on encrypting the data at the database level, but I think this is going to deteriorate the performance of the web app. ( But maybe I shouldn't be worried about this ) I've read the laws about data protection on health issues ( Portugal ), but isn't very specific about this ( I just questioned them about this, I'm waiting for their response ). I've read the following link, but my question is different, should I encrypt the data in the database, or not. One problem that I foresee in encrypting data, is that I'm going to need a key, this could be the user password, but we all know how user passwords are ( 12345 etc etc ), and generating a key I would have to store it somewhere, this means that the programmer, dba, whatever could have access to it, any thoughts on this? Even adding an random salt to the user password isn't going to solve the problem since I can always access it, and therefore decrypt the data.

I have been trying on Windows, Linux (Ubuntu) and Mac OS X. So far my favorite environment is on Mac OS X. I have tried a number of IDE's and debuggers as well.  IDE's Eclipse with the PDT Add On The PDT version of Eclipse Aptana Zend Netbeans  Debuggers Zend XDebug So far the only environments that I could get running quickly were Zend and Netbeans. Eclipse is a nightmare of versions and capabilities. I could only get Eclipse working well on Windows. On Ubuntu I was able to get the debugger working once. Thats it, one session, then it never worked again. I love the Zend tools and environment and it worked well everywhere I tried it, but it was beyond my budget.  Aptana also worked best on Windows, on Mac OS X it was fragile and I never could get debugging to work.  Netbeans worked first time, every time, every where. With one oddity, after several debugging sessions the debugger would refuse to connect. On every platform, I would end having to reboot to restore debugging, which would then work correctly for quite some time. I am sure I will discover that some process is hanging and there is a less intrusive way to clear the issue, but for now rebooting always works. In a future post I will go over how exactly I set my environment up, for now I have decided to stay with OS X. By the way, I did NOT use MAMP or the Zend Server, I stuck with PHP compiled and built from source, as well as Apache and MySQL installed locally. I use Homebrew as a package manager for OS X. I tried PORT but did not like the fact I had to sudo all the time to use it, and it installed things in /opt which I was not used to. Homebrew does sandbox the apps but it is nice enough to symlink them to their "normal" locations usually in /usr/local.

  I'm told to think about caching of images that will be displayed on the page. The images will be repeated throughout the website on different pages and I'm told to figure out the best way to cache these images. There could be few to dozen of images on single page. Here's few questions: Will browser caching work to display the same images across different web pages? Should I rather store images in stringified form in a memory instead, using JavaScript arrays?   I have apache version 2.2 and php 5.3.15 on a single server. I configured virtual hosting and a default vhost. 0_default_.conf - goes to /var/www/default sub.domain.com.conf - goes to /var/www/sub.domain.com My question is, how could I set the default documentroot to sub.domain.com permanently? That means all request should be redirected to sub.domain.com. I try to remove 0_default_.conf but when viewing the page it display the php source code of sub.domain.com. Here is my configurations -- http://pastebin.com/4e3awUJ4 Although I can create index.php to /var/www/default and permanently redirect to sub.domain.com site but it's not viable solution for me because what if I didn't point the ip address of sub.domain.com to the server so user cannot view that subdomain.   In the coming months we're going to begin a project where we take a system we've built for a client (v1) and rebuild it from scratch. Our goal with v2 is to make it modular, so that this specific client will have their own set of modules they use, then another client may use a different set of modules altogether. The trick here is that Company A might have a series of checkout and user modules that change how that system works. Company B might stick with the standard checkout procedure but customize how products are browsed. What are some good approaches to application architecture when you're building an application from scratch that you want to have a Core that's shared among all clients while still maintaining the flexability for anything to be modified specifically for a client? I've seen CodeIgniter's hooks and don't think that's a good solution as we could end up with 250 hooks and it's still not flexible enough. What are some other solutions? Ideally we won't need to draw a line in the sand.
