• Web Deploy 3.0 Installation Fails

  I am having difficulty installing Microsoft Web Deploy 3.0 to a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. I have tried installing with both the Web Platform Installer and the MSI package but installation fails while trying to execute the MSI custom action ExecuteRegisterUIModuleCA. This server is a VM and a member of a farm but shared config is disabled while I'm installing. • Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz Virus Impossible to get rid of?!

  Hi Guys I'm new to this forum so I'm unsure whether this is the right place for a question like this. I have a Trojan Horse infection that lives in memory and seems to be impossible to get rid of. I've tried a vew AntiVirus products (Norton, Windows Essentials & AVG Free) all to no avail & I've recently tried a few bootable antivirus solutions I found here: http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/ Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2008 (failed - it wouldn't even load the UI, is there a newer one out there?) F Secure Rescue Disk (Updates & Scanner ran, found 10 infections, said it was going to delete or repair them, but didn't get rid of them) Avira found a load of infections but it froze when I tried to interact with the UI after the scan. Every time I run these I'll load Windows after & run AVG, and it still finds Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz (in Services.exe) & Trojan Horse Generic.16.ARSU (in svchost.exe) Is anyone familiar with a virus like this? Can anyone suggest how to approach a solution? Thanks Dave

• How to completely disable laptop sound?

  I have a HP Pavillion DV7 laptop with win 8 pro. The laptop has an unidentified problem with sound drivers or hardware that sometimes causes volume to constantly jiggle up and down. This is very annoying because of these consequences: Renders mute unusable - as the volume changes the sound unmutes automatically Causes an annoying win 8 "surface UI" notification to appear constantly in the upper left corner, which is distracting enough by itself, but more importantly Renders the whole "surface UI" unusable, because it loses focus whenever the sound changing notification appears When the jiggling happens, the laptop also loses the ability to redirect sound to earphones - sound comes out of the speakers even if earphones are connected. To solve these issues I want to completely disable sound in the laptop (I've tried reinstalling drivers several times to no end). I have tried disabling all sound related drivers and devices in the Device Manager but Windows re-enables those automatically whenever I restart the laptop. The BIOS doesn't have any settings to disable sound hardware either. Please don't suggest having the laptop sound serviced or fixed. It's not worth the expense. I just want to remove sound support so I can use it normally. It is very unusable as it is now.

• Migrated SCOM 2007 R2 Reporting Services but reports are gone

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportServerException: The item '/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Alert' cannot be found. (rsItemNotFound) at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReport.GetExecutionInfo() at Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ServerReport.GetParameters() at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Mom.Internal.UI.Reporting.Parameters.ReportParameterBlock.Initialize(ServerReport serverReport) at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Mom.Internal.UI.Console.ReportForm.SetReportJob(Object sender, ConsoleJobEventArgs args) The report doesn't exist on the reporting services side. how do I re-deploy this reports? • chef clients behind firewall

  I am currently learning about chef. What I understood so far: I have to install chef-server on an own server or use the hosted chef. I have to install chef-client on the servers that I want to manage aka nodes (manually or using knife bootstrap). I installed several chef tools on my own PC that I can use to manage the nodes, e.g. knife. Now in my case the specialty is that the nodes are behind a firewall/load balancer/proxy. The nodes can access servers on the outside via NAT (http works and I can configure chef-specific hosts to work as well). However they can only be contacted from the outside via a ssh tunnel. There is really much documentation about chef available but I did not find an answer to these questions: When using knife, is it enough when I set up a ssh tunnel manually on my own PC or does the chef server need to contact the nodes? When using knife, can I configure it to setup a ssh tunnel automatically? When using the chef server web ui can I configure it to connect to the nodes via ssh tunnel or do I need a setup where I setup the tunnel myself e.g. using monit? Is this even possible with hosted chef? Instead of using knife or the web ui: Can I issue the same management commands directly on the nodes using chef-client? What solution would you recommend? • Are web service handler chains possible under IIS / ASP.NET

  I'm working with a client who wants me to implement a particular design in an IIS/ASP.NET environment. This design was already implemented in Java, but I am not sure it is possible using Microsoft technologies. In a Tomcat/Java environment one can create so call Handler Chains. In essence a handler runs on the server on which the web service is running and it intercepts the SOAP message coming to the web service. The handler can perform a number of tasks before passing control to the web service. Some of these tasks may refer to authentication and authorization. Moreover, one can create handler chains, such that the handlers can run in a particular sequence before passing control to the web service. This is a very elegant solution, as certain aspects of authentication and authorization can be automatically performed, without the developer of the client application and of the web service having to invest anything in it. The code for the client application and the web service is not affected. You may find a number of articles on internet on this subject by searching on Google for "web service handler chain". I performed searches for web service handlers in IIS or ASP.NET. I get some hits, but apparently handlers in IIS have another meaning than that described above. My question therefor is: Can handler chains (as available in Java and Tomcat) be created in IIS? If so, how (any article, book, forum...)? Either a negative or a positive answer will be greatly appreciated. Mike

• New keyboard for linux: Adesso Tru-Form or MS Natural Keyboard 4000?

  Hi folks! I'm going to buy a new ergonomic keyboard for my laptop. In the following, keep in mind I live in Italy. I considered the following models: Adesso PCK-308UB - Adesso Tru-Form™ Pro - Contoured Ergonomic Keyboard with TouchPad-PS2 Pro: has a built-in touchpad in the same position of my laptop somewhat cheaper than the alternative below Cons: the surface doesn't seem to be bowl-shaped. keys seem to lay on a straight slightly-inclined surface. It seems an idea used extensively in other ergonomic keyboards according to a few comments on the net, new Adesso keyboards seem to lack robustness, they're likely to loose small parts after a few weeks or months. Other users, instead, seem to never had any problem in years and swear by their quality and comfortability. Those who had problems, however, lamented a lack of responsiveness from the manufacturer. I'm not sure whether the keyboard, at least the standard keys, and the touchpad will both be recognized correctly under linux distros (I mostly use FC btw) last time I checked, Adesso didn't have local resellers in my country Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard Pro: recognized as one of the most comfortable keyboards reliable customer service operating in my country AFAIK there are several documented ways to get extra buttons work with linux Cons: it doesn't have a builtin touchpad and has a numeric keypad wasting space to reach mouse But there could be other keyboards I haven't considered yet, so here follows my ideal keyboard wishlist, ordered by priority linux compatible basic ergonomic design, which entails split tilted keyboard and pads advanced ergonomic design, like true-ergonomic's or kinesis , where special keys (like enter, caps-lock...) are placed symmetrically in the middle to be used by thumbs a builtin touchpad/trackball placed under the keyboard. I just love this on my notebook. I think it's pretty effective, since it allows my hand to rest naturally everytime I use it. Any opinion on this? high-quality switches, like cherry's (unsure about this one) additional programmable keys placed near usual ones, to simplify typing shortcuts TIA Andrea

• How do photoshop slices and layer comps interact?

  I'm interested in using Photoshop (I have CS2) for some user interface design. I was hoping to be able to use slices and layer comps to mark out particular elements, and use Javascript scripting to export multiple graphics files and text descriptions (positions and sizes of slices mainly) that will be used by my program. My problem is that I've never used Photoshop for web design, or otherwise used slices, and I'm not confident that I understand how they interact with layer comps. This is what I believe (and hope) is correct... Manual slices aren't affected by layer comps in any way - they aren't saved as part of a layer comp. The same manual slices will be active irrespective of which layer comp is selected. Layer-based slices aren't directly affected by layer comps, but they are indirectly affected in that the layer comp saves details of layer position and style. Thus selecting a layer comp may move a layer and change its style, affecting the location and size of its layer-based slice, or may effectively disable the slice by hiding the layer. Automatic slices aren't directly affected by layer comps, but are indirectly affected due to changes to the layer-based slices. So, layer based slices (which are my main interest) may move, may change size (to accomodate a style such as a drop shadow), and may be effectively disabled by the layer being hidden. Other details (and all details of manual slices) will remain constant irrespective of which layer comp is active. Is that correct?

• Overclock Failed

  This morning when I tried to turn on my computer, the monitor would not display anything. The computer is on, but no UI on the monitor and no beep. I turned off the computer and turn it back on again. This time, the computer was on for about 2 seconds and automatically turned itself off for about 2 second and automatically turned itself back on. This happened two times without the monitor displaying any UI. On the third try, the computer did the same thing but when it turned itself back on, the monitor displayed this: American Megatrends Asus P8P67 Le ACPI bios Revision 1011 CPU Intel Core i5 2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz Speed: 3300MHz Total Memory 4096 MB (DDR3-1333) USB Devices Total: 0 Drive, 1 Keyboard, 1 Mouse, 2 Hubs Detected ATA/ATAPI Deivces SATA6G_2 Hitachi HDs821010CLA 332 SATA3G_1 Corsair force 3 SSD SATA3G_2 HL-DT-ST DB-RE UH12CS28 Overclocking Failed! Please enter setup to reconfigure your system. Press F1 to Run Setup. After I pressed F1, it went into the Asus EF1 Bios Utility. I couldn't do anything in there so I just exited. After which, the computer auto turned off and on again and I was able to use the PC like regular. This has never happened to this computer before and the day before, nothing seemed wrong, just regular use and some gaming.

• Which Linux distribution for vehicle LCD instrument panel

  I will be designing an instrument panel for a vehicle to display the common gauges that you would find in a car - (speedometer, rpm, fuel level, oil pressure, etc.). We have selected a 7" LCD and are in the process of narrowing down the hardware (This will use an ARM processor). The idea is to read these values off of the CAN Bus and update the UI with those values. This needs to have a fairly quick boot time, 5-10 seconds would be acceptable from the time the ignigtion is turned on to the time the UI is running. I have been doing a lot of research on which linux distribution to use, but I wanted to ask the question here to get the community's suggestions. I have been a .NET programmer for years, so linux is a new world to me. Here is what I have found so far... Tizen is geared for In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) (plus some others). However, this project is not an IVI, and I do not need the phone dialer, navigation, etc. Meego is dead, and Tizen seems to be the replacement Angstrom, Debian... would either of these be useful? I am not tied to a particular programming language or IDE. Any help and direction is appreciated!

• Can't Configure IBM 8275-416 Switch Via Serial

  I am attempting to configure an IBM 8275-416 switch (I found a manual here) via serial connection. However, when I connect with HyperTerminal, the output contains a lot of garbage characters. It's pretty much unusable, because there's enough layout-breaking text-gunk that it's very difficult to determine what's actually being displayed. . I was able to reset the switch to factory defaults via the terminal interface, so I know that it's not entirely broken. It also performs basic functions all right (i.e., you plug in clients and Ethernet cables - they can connect to clients plugged into other ports) - but I'd like it to do more than that (VLANs yay). I don't know if its in-band UI is operational or not, because I can't get the terminal interface to behave well enough to properly turn on the web/SNMP UI. So that's not available. Things I've tried: - Changing the encoding: HyperTerminal lets me choose between Standard JIS and Shift-JIS. Neither setting fixes the issue. - Checking emulation settings: The manual demands VT100, 19200 baud, 8 data bits, and such: I have faithfully applied these settings, both in HyperTerminal's settings and in the properties of the COM1 port in Device Manager (connecting from a Windows machine). - Restoring to factory defaults: See above. Things that it could be, but that seem unlikely: - Cabling: Couldn't find a proper null-modem cable, so used two 232-to-RJ45 adapters. But if it was a problem with the cable, wouldn't it be more likely to not connect or do input at all, rather than just garble the text? Since I was actually able to perform the reset-to-factory defaults operation, I don't think it's this. - Device as a whole broken: It is a decade and change old, so it's possible that it's just dying slowly. Again, though, it seems like there would be more symptoms than just garbled text in the terminal. What else can I try to get a sane interface to this switch?

• Xbox Music ignores Asus FN media keys in Desktop Mode

  I have an Asus PRO64JQ laptop, and I recently upgraded to Windows 8. The FN keys stopped working, so I tried to install default drivers using the CD that came with my laptop. Unfortunately, the CD does not support Windows 8. Asus Support does not help me either. It seems that Asus does not support Windows 8 on my model, since I can't find it in their list of Windows 8 upgradable models. Also, the support page of my laptop does not allow me to select Windows 8 as OS. That's why I'm asking my question here. I fixed (most of) the FN keys by installing the ATKPackage, and I was happy to find out that the media keys (play/pauze, next, previous) works with the Xbox Music app. But the keys only work in the Metro UI. In Desktop Mode, pressing FN+? (play/pause) starts up Windows Media Player. Disabling Windows Media Player through the control panel stops it from popping up, but Xbox Music still only responds to them in the Metro UI. I remember that I had similar problems when I tried to make these media keys to work with iTunes on Windows 7. The fix there was a small iTunes plug-in. So tell me, do you know how to fix my problem?   I have a database, and i want to force a restore over top of it. I check the option: Overwrite the existing database (WITH REPLACE) But, as expected, SSMS is unable to overwrite the existing database. Of course i don't want different filenames; i want to overwrite the existing database. How do i force a restore over an existing database? And for Google search crawler: File '%s' is claimed by '%s'(4) and '%s"(3). The WITH MOVE clause can be used to relocate one or more files. RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3176) Update The script (before i deleted the database, because i needed to get it done) was: RESTORE DATABASE [HealthCareGovManager] FILE = N'HealthCareGovManager_Data', FILE = N'HealthCareGovManager_Archive', FILE = N'HealthCareGovManager_AuditLog' FROM DISK = N'D:\STAGING\HealthCareGovManager10232013.bak' WITH FILE = 1, MOVE N'HealthCareGovManager_Data' TO N'D:\CGI Data\HealthCareGovManager.MDF', MOVE N'HealthCareGovManager_Archive' TO N'D:\CGI Data\HealthCareGovManager.ndf', MOVE N'HealthCareGovManager_AuditLog' TO N'D:\CGI Data\HealthCareGovManager.ndf', MOVE N'HealthCareGovManager_Log' TO N'D:\CGI Data\HealthCareGovManager.LDF', NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 10 I used the UI to delete the existing database, so that i could use the UI to force an overwrite of the (non)existing database. Hopefully there can be an answer so that the next guy can have an answer. No, nobody was in the context of the database (The error message from other connections is quite different from this error, and i only got to see this error after i killed the other connections).

• Disable Windows 7 taskbar grouping. Not combining.

  I've look near and far but I cannot find a way (setting or hack) to prevent Windows 7 from grouping taskbar buttons together that are "related". I'm not talking about the option to combine or collapse related buttons into one item. I can find that setting at: Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Taskbar Taskbar buttons: This is what I an not looking for: How to Enable or Disable Windows 7 Taskbar Button Grouping I'm talking about how Windows 7 seams to think that it's doing me a favor by grouping all my Google Chrome buttons together and grouping all my Explorer buttons together etc. My workflow in Windows XP was to use the program Taskbar Shuffle to allow me to reorganize my taskbar buttons into related task "groups" I was working on. For example: [Start Button] | [iTunes] [Outlook Express] [Chrome Gmail] [layered design folder] [Photoshop CS4] [exported images folder] [website root folder] [Dreamweaver CS4] [Chrome www.MyAwesomeWebsiteImBuilding.com] [Chrome Recent web search] [some unrelated folder] Windows 7 doesn't seem to let me do this. • Why does 64-bit Windows need a separate "Program Files (x86)" folder?

  I know that on a 64-bit version of Windows the "Program Files" folder is for 64-bit programs and the "Program Files (x86)" folder is for 32-bit programs, but why is this even necessary? By "necessary", I don't mean "why could Microsoft not have made any other design decisions?" because of course they could have. Rather, I mean, "why, given the current design of 64-bit Windows, must 32-bit programs have a separate top-level folder from 64-bit programs?" There are plenty of questions on Super User and elsewhere that assert "one is for 32-bit programs, one is for 64-bit programs", but none that I can find give the reason. From my experience, it doesn't seem to matter whether a 32-bit program is installed in the correct place or not. Does Windows somehow present itself differently to a program running out of "Program Files (x86)"? Is there a description that shows exactly what's different for a program installed in "Program Files (x86)" instead of "Program Files"? I think it's unlikely that Microsoft would introduce a new folder without a legitimate technical reason.

• ClickOnce manifest problem

  We are currently deploying a WPF 4 app via click once and there is a scenario when the installation fails. If the user does not have .Net 4.0 Full install and attempts to install our app the framework installs fine but the app fails to install. If we re-run the installation again the app installs fine. • Authoritative sources about Database vs. Flatfile decision

  <tldr>looking for a reference to a book or other undeniably authoritative source that gives reasons when you should choose a database vs. when you should choose other storage methods. I have provided an un-authoritative list of reasons about 2/3 of the way down this post.</tldr> I have a situation at my company where a database is being used where it would be better to use another solution (in this case, an auto-generated piece of source code that contains a static lookup table, searched by binary sort). Normally, a database would be an OK solution even though the problem does not require a database, e.g, none of the elements of ACID are needed, as it is read-only data, updated about every 3-5 years (also requiring other sourcecode changes), and fits in memory, and can be keyed into via binary search (a tad faster than db, but speed is not an issue). The problem is that this code runs on our enterprise server, but is shared with several PC platforms (some disconnected, some use a central DB, etc.), and parts of it are managed by multiple programming units, parts by the DBAs, parts even by mathematicians in another department, etc. These hit their own platform’s version of their databases (containing their own copy of the static data). What happens is that every implementation, every little change, something different goes wrong. There are many other issues as well. I can’t even use a flatfile, because one mode of running on our enterprise server does not have permission to read files (only databases, and of course, its own literal storage, e.g., in-source table). Of course, other parts of the system use databases in proper, less obscure manners; there is no problem with those parts. So why don’t we just change it? I don’t have administrative ability to force a change. But I’m affected because sometimes I have to help fix the problems, but mostly because it causes outages and tons of extra IT time by other programmers and d*mmit that makes me mad! The reason neither management, nor the designers of the system, can see the problem is that they propose a solution that won’t work: increase communication; implement more safeguards and standards; etc. But every time, in a different part of the already-pared-down but still multi-step processes, a few different diligent, hard-working, top performing IT personnel make a unique subtle error that causes it to fail, sometimes after the last round of testing! And in general these are not single-person failures, but understandable miscommunications. And communication at our company is actually better than most. People just don't think that's the case because they haven't dug into the matter. However, I have it on very good word from somebody with extensive formal study of sociology and psychology that the relatively small amount of less-than-proper database usage in this gigantic cross-platform multi-source, multi-language project is bureaucratically un-maintainable. Impossible. No chance. At least with Human Beings in the loop, and it can’t be automated. In addition, the management and developers who could change this, though intelligent and capable, don’t understand the rigidity of this ‘how humans are’ issue, and are not convincible on the matter. The reason putting the static data in sourcecode will solve the problem is, although the solution is less sexy than a database, it would function with no technical drawbacks; and since the sharing of sourcecode already works very well, you basically erase any database-related effort from this section of the project, along with all the drawbacks of it that are causing problems. OK, that’s the background, for the curious. I won’t be able to convince management that this is an unfixable sociological problem, and that the real solution is coding around these limits of human nature, just as you would code around a bug in a 3rd party component that you can’t change. So what I have to do is exploit the unsuitableness of the database solution, and not do it using logic, but rather authority. I am aware of many reasons, and posts on this site giving reasons for one over the other; I’m not looking for lists of reasons like these (although you can add a comment if I've miss a doozy): WHY USE A DATABASE? instead of flatfile/other DB vs. file: if you need... • How do I prove I should put a table of values in source code instead of a database table?

  <tldr>looking for a reference to a book or other undeniably authoritative source that gives reasons when you should choose a database vs. when you should choose other storage methods. I have provided an un-authoritative list of reasons about 2/3 of the way down this post.</tldr> I have a situation at my company where a database is being used where it would be better to use another solution (in this case, an auto-generated piece of source code that contains a static lookup table, searched by binary sort). Normally, a database would be an OK solution even though the problem does not require a database, e.g, none of the elements of ACID are needed, as it is read-only data, updated about every 3-5 years (also requiring other sourcecode changes), and fits in memory, and can be keyed into via binary search (a tad faster than db, but speed is not an issue). The problem is that this code runs on our enterprise server, but is shared with several PC platforms (some disconnected, some use a central DB, etc.), and parts of it are managed by multiple programming units, parts by the DBAs, parts even by mathematicians in another department, etc. These hit their own platform’s version of their databases (containing their own copy of the static data). What happens is that every implementation, every little change, something different goes wrong. There are many other issues as well. I can’t even use a flatfile, because one mode of running on our enterprise server does not have permission to read files (only databases, and of course, its own literal storage, e.g., in-source table). Of course, other parts of the system use databases in proper, less obscure manners; there is no problem with those parts. So why don’t we just change it? I don’t have administrative ability to force a change. But I’m affected because sometimes I have to help fix the problems, but mostly because it causes outages and tons of extra IT time by other programmers and d*mmit that makes me mad! The reason neither management, nor the designers of the system, can see the problem is that they propose a solution that won’t work: increase communication; implement more safeguards and standards; etc. But every time, in a different part of the already-pared-down but still multi-step processes, a few different diligent, hard-working, top performing IT personnel make a unique subtle error that causes it to fail, sometimes after the last round of testing! And in general these are not single-person failures, but understandable miscommunications. And communication at our company is actually better than most. People just don't think that's the case because they haven't dug into the matter. However, I have it on very good word from somebody with extensive formal study of sociology and psychology that the relatively small amount of less-than-proper database usage in this gigantic cross-platform multi-source, multi-language project is bureaucratically un-maintainable. Impossible. No chance. At least with Human Beings in the loop, and it can’t be automated. In addition, the management and developers who could change this, though intelligent and capable, don’t understand the rigidity of this ‘how humans are’ issue, and are not convincible on the matter. The reason putting the static data in sourcecode will solve the problem is, although the solution is less sexy than a database, it would function with no technical drawbacks; and since the sharing of sourcecode already works very well, you basically erase any database-related effort from this section of the project, along with all the drawbacks of it that are causing problems. OK, that’s the background, for the curious. I won’t be able to convince management that this is an unfixable sociological problem, and that the real solution is coding around these limits of human nature, just as you would code around a bug in a 3rd party component that you can’t change. So what I have to do is exploit the unsuitableness of the database solution, and not do it using logic, but rather authority. I am aware of many reasons, and posts on this site giving reasons for one over the other; I’m not looking for lists of reasons like these (although you can add a comment if I've miss a doozy): WHY USE A DATABASE? instead of flatfile/other DB vs. file: if you need... Random Read / Transparent search optimization Advanced / varied / customizable Searching and sorting capabilities Transaction/rollback Locks, semaphores Concurrency control / Shared users Security 1-many/m-m is easier Easy modification Scalability Load Balancing Random updates / inserts / deletes Advanced query Administrative control of design, etc. SQL / learning curve Debugging / Logging Centralized / Live Backup capabilities Cached queries / dvlp & cache execution plans Interleaved update/read Referential integrity, avoid redundant/missing/corrupt/out-of-sync data Reporting (from on olap or oltp db) / turnkey generation tools [Disadvantages:] Important to get right the first time - professional design - but only b/c it's meant to last s/w & h/w cost Usu. over a network, speed issue (best vs. best design vs. local=even then a separate process req's marshalling/netwk layers/inter-p comm) indicies and query processing can stand in the way of simple processing (vs. flatfile) WHY USE FLATFILE: If you only need... • Null-free "maps": Is a callback solution slower than tryGet()?

  In comments to "How to implement List, Set, and Map in null free design?", Steven Sudit and I got into a discussion about using a callback, with handlers for "found" and "not found" situations, vs. a tryGet() method, taking an out parameter and returning a boolean indicating whether the out parameter had been populated. Steven maintained that the callback approach was more complex and almost certain to be slower; I maintained that the complexity was no greater and the performance at worst the same. But code speaks louder than words, so I thought I'd implement both and see what I got. The original question was fairly theoretical with regard to language ("And for argument sake, let's say this language don't even have null") -- I've used Java here because that's what I've got handy. Java doesn't have out parameters, but it doesn't have first-class functions either, so style-wise, it should suck equally for both approaches. (Digression: As far as complexity goes: I like the callback design because it inherently forces the user of the API to handle both cases, whereas the tryGet() design requires callers to perform their own boilerplate conditional check, which they could forget or get wrong. But having now implemented both, I can see why the tryGet() design looks simpler, at least in the short term.) But, on a hunch, I added some garbage collection, and the performance penalty vanished. This fits with my instinct, which is that we're basically talking about taking the same number of method calls, conditional checks, etc. and rearranging them. But then, I wrote the code, so I might well have written a suboptimal or subconsicously penalized tryGet() implementation. Thoughts?

• Why won't my AJAX controls work? (and ajax for .net 4 not working?)

  I'm totally new to ajax. I'm using VS2005. I just downloaded .NET framework 4 and so then I downloaded ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net4 via [http://ajaxcontroltoolkit.codeplex.com/releases/view/43475] (as opposed to ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net35 for .NET 3.5), but when I try to load the ajaxcontroltoolkit.dll into my toolbox (as said in the tutorials), I get the following error msg: "'C:......\ajaxcontroltoolkit.dll' is not a microsoft .NET module." First question: Why is this happening? So I tried downloading the "Recommended" ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net35, and it accepted the .dll file and loaded all my controls. So, I started a new website and tried to check out a combobox, and it displays, but IE is giving the follow error msg: 'Sys.Extended.UI.PositioningMode.BottomLeft' is null or not an object.' 2nd question: Why is this happening?
