• What was the first consumer-oriented hardware/software solution?

  We all know the story of the personal computer as a consumer-oriented product. But I just thought that real end user solution should have appeared before that time. So a product that was probably expensive, but allowed using it as a service charging for it, for example computer-terminal for transport time-table access or game machine. On the other site, the video terminals as we know them appeared not so long ago. So if there was something like this, this could be hardware/software most likely offering no interactivity, but probably printing some information based on user actions.

• Why is my fan constatnly blowing in Ubuntu?

  I have installed Ubuntu 13.04 (64-bits) alongside Windows 7 on different partition on my second desktop. It's working nice. I have updated everything. However, I have problems with my fan. It's blowing non-stop and very fast(loud). I haven't these problems in Windows 7 where it works nicely. How to update drivers for my fan or something else? My desktop is: HP Pro 3410 Microtower PC. Graphic card: AMD Radeon HD 6570 Board: 2A9C 1.1 Bus Clock: 133 megahertz BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 6.14 11/05/2010 Processor: 3,20 gigahertz Intel Core i3 550 DRIVERS I HAVE TRIED FOR MY GRAPHIC CARD: I have tried these drivers so far: xserver-xorg-video-ati, version: 1:7.1.0-0ubuntu2 fglrx Version: 2:9.010-0ubuntu3 fglrx-updates Version 2:9.012-0ubuntu1 But the fan is still blowing like a maniac. I have tried to install Linux Mint 15 previously and I have had the same problems with the fan. Any idea how to fix it?

• What is the ideal self hosted search engine?

  I have an internal (intranet) site that is comprised of several blogs and forums, hundreds of static pages, lots of PDF files and several other document types. Its been glued together loosely over the last couple of years and now its my job to maintain it. I'm looking for a search engine that I can host myself that ideally: Allows for searching the Blog / Forum databases directly if given the database information and tables to search. Handles most text documents (PDF/DOC/ODF) Is open source, or allows access to the source code once purchased It doesn't matter to me what language or platform it is written in. Normally, I'd just use Google site search, but that's not an option for an intranet.

• How can I get H.264 support?

  Canonical Limited is shown as a licensee of H.264. I am interested in being able to play H.264 video online when using the Chrome web-browser in Ubuntu (and in the future on Firefox when Firefox supports H.264). Is H.264 support enabled on self-installs of Ubuntu? If not, is there some way I can buy H.264 support for my Ubuntu install? Assume a scenario where I self-installed Ubuntu on a computer that came pre-installed with Windows OS. I'd like to know any and all options available to me for getting H.264 to work on Ubuntu.

• Kernel panic: "Machine check: processor context corrupt" after install

  I am new to Linux and I am having issues installing. I have tried multiple versions and all seem to give me the same issue. The LiveCD worked and I used it to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7. Here's a few screen shots of what I get. I am currently trying to install most the most recent version of Ubuntu. System specs: x58 motherboard 12GB RAM Core i7 processor 2 Nvidia GTX 580 video cards in SLI configuration Thanks in advance and please feel free to simplify your answers as I am pretty new at this.

• Where can I find more documentation on bulding an Ubuntu-based cloud infrastructure?

  I've been reading: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuCloudInfrastructure It's fascinating stuff, but documentation seems a bit sparse. Where I work, we have this aging, clunky VMWare ESXi setup for all our internal servers. I'd really like to read up on possible migration or just information on Orchestra, integration with Juju, etc that isn't a bunch of loosely connected blog posts. :p This is concerning 11.10 and, presumably, 12.04. To make this less vague, specifically documentation on: Orchestra - features, comparisons, videos, etc Integrating Juju with Orchestra - I'm familiar with using Juju for deploying on AWS, but that wiki page glances over connecting it to orchestra Building a private cloud - Advantages, using/deploying Openstack, etc Working with internal networks - Configuring DMZs, setting rules, etc Any recommended books would be appreciated too. I didn't intend for this to be a 'do all my homework for me! LMGTFY' post, I'm just hungry for information and haven't found a good repository of knowledge for much of this.

• Will we ever lose the human touch?

  I was at a conference two weeks ago, which was targeted to sales and marketing professionals. The discussions around the changing scenario in sales was very interesting. More and more of selling is moving to the internet- sales people are delivering more of their presentations online, or via the phone. Budget constraints and new technologies have dramatically decreased the need for face-to-face interactions. At the same time, customers are also researching for products on their own, taking the advice of peers, making up their mind, and then contacting the vendor. That takes care of more than half of the usual selling process. But humans are social animals, and because of that I believe that despite these changing trends and technologies, the need to maintain the human touch will always be necessary. One of the presenters at the conference shared this video, which stayed in my mind.

  Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. In our booth we were showing off some of the work of the Hydra Consortium whose goal it is to leverage the emerging smart grid infrastructure to securely enable the delivery of personal health data (weight, blood pressure, etc) from the home to your doctor. • Marek's JAX-RS 2.0 content from Devoxx 2011

  Marek Potociar, one of the two co-spec leads for the upcoming JAX-RS 2.0 had a very well-attended session at Devoxx and wrote a blog post about it detailing his conference experience (1st time at Devoxx) and running through the new features of the specification. A link to slides is also included in his post. The work by the expert group seems very solid at this point as you can read for yourself in details in the recently published early draft document. Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2006 Auto Generate Script to Delete Deprecated Fields in Current Database In early career everytime I have to drop a column, I had hard time doing it because I was scared what if that column was needed somewhere in the code. Due to this fear I never dropped any column. I just renamed the column. If the column which I renamed was needed afterwards it was very easy to rename it back again. However, it is not recommended to keep the deleted column renamed in the database. At every interval I used to drop the columns which was prefixed with specific word. This script is 6 years old but still works. Give it a look, I am open for improvements. 2007 Shrinking Truncate Log File – Log Full – Part 2 Shrinking database or mdf file is indeed bad thing and it creates lots of problems. However, once in a while there is legit requirement to shrink the log file – a very rare one. In the rare occasion shrinking or truncating the log file may be the only solution. However, one should make sure to take backup before and after the truncate or shrink as in case of a disaster they can be very useful. Remember that truncating log file will break the log chain and while restore it can create major issue. Anyway, use this feature with caution. 2008 Simple Use of Cursor to Print All Stored Procedures of Database Including Schema This is a very interesting requirement I used to face in my early career days, I needed to print all the Stored procedures of my database. Interesting enough I had written a cursor to do so. Today when I look back at this stored procedure, I believe there will be a much cleaner way to do the same task, however, I still use this SP quite often when I have to document all the stored procedures of my database. Interesting Observation about Order of Resultset without ORDER BY In industry many developers avoid using ORDER BY clause to display the result in particular order thinking that Index is enforcing the order. In this interesting example, I demonstrate that without using ORDER BY, same table and similar query can return different results. Query optimizer always returns results using any method which is optimized for performance. The learning is There is no order unless ORDER BY is used. 2009 Size of Index Table – A Puzzle to Find Index Size for Each Index on Table I asked this puzzle earlier where I asked how to find the Index size for each of the tables. The puzzle was very well received and lots of interesting answers were received. To answer this question I have written following blog posts. I suggest this weekend you try to solve this problem and see if you can come up with a better solution. If not, well here are the solutions. Solution 1 | Solution 2 | Solution 3 Understanding Table Hints with Examples Hints are options and strong suggestions specified for enforcement by the SQL Server query processor on DML statements. The hints override any execution plan the query optimizer might select for a query. The SQL Server Query optimizer is a very smart tool and it makes a better selection of execution plan. Suggesting hints to the Query Optimizer should be attempted when absolutely necessary and by experienced developers who know exactly what they are doing (or in development as a way to experiment and learn). Interesting Observation – TOP 100 PERCENT and ORDER BY I have seen developers and DBAs using TOP very causally when they have to use the ORDER BY clause. Theoretically, there is no need of ORDER BY in the view at all. All the ordering should be done outside the view and view should just have the SELECT statement in it. It was quite common that to save this extra typing by including ordering inside of the view. At several instances developers want a complete resultset and for the same they include TOP 100 PERCENT along with ORDER BY, assuming that this will simulate the SELECT statement with ORDER BY. 2010 SQLPASS Nov 8-11, 2010-Seattle – An Alternative Look at Experience In year 2010 I attended most prestigious SQL Server event SQLPASS between Nov 8-11, 2010 at Seattle. I have only one expression for the event - Best Summit Ever. Instead of writing about my usual routine or the event, I wrote about the interesting things I did and how I felt about it! When I go back and read it, I feel that this is the best event I attended in year 2010. Change Database Access to Single User Mode Using SSMS Image says all. 2011 SQL Server 2012 has introduced new analytic functions. These functions were long awaited and I am glad that they are now here. Before when any of this function was needed, people used to write long T-SQL code to simulate these functions. But now there’s no need of doing so. Having available native function also helps performance as well readability. • How to stop gecko-mediaplayer from buffering endlessly?

  I'm using the gecko-mediaplayer plugin (formerly "mplayerplug-in"). The totem plugin was not always working correctly with Opera, and I'm actually depending on the [Copy URL] feature of gecko-mediaplayer. However that plugin does some inept buffering of videos. It seems to default to 20% caching regardless of what you set in the preferences window. This is quite annoying for big video files. But appearantly it's by design http://groups.google.com/group/gecko-mediaplayer/browse_thread/thread/b7f0f5a3cedc8979 The Gentoo forums listed some workaround http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-816690.html - but ~/.config/gecko-mediaplayer/gecko-mediaplayer.conf is not working in the Ubuntu version. Does anyone know the actual way to configure the cache= size. Which is the real configuration filename under Ubuntu?

• Smartassembly 5: it lives! Early Access builds now available

  I'm pleased to announce that, late last week, we put out the first early access build for Smartassembly 5, Red Gate's fantastic code protection and error reporting tool, which we acquired last September. You can download it via: http://www.red-gate.com/messageboard/viewforum.php?f=116 It's obviously pretty early days, so please do not try to use this to protect a production application, but we've already done a lot of work in some key areas: We're simplifying and streamlining the licensing model (you won't see this yet, but a lot of the work on this has already been done). We've improved usability of the product, with a better menu, reordering of project settings, and better defaults. We've also fixed a load of bugs, which I'll let Alex blog about in more detail. On a slightly more trivial level, the curly braces are also no more. Over the coming weeks, we'll be adding more improvements, and starting usability tests.   Paul Randal of SQLskills.com does a great job of answering the question of why there are so many undocumented DBCC commands in his post Why are so many DBCC commands undocumented? I would like to go on to say that not only does this apply to the DBCC commands but is some respect to all parts of SQL, other Servers, IDE's, Operating Systems, just about everywhere. There is always something that just does not make it into the official documentation. And as Paul points out probably never will make it. That could be why there are so many "Tips & Tricks" types of books, blog post, etc. everywhere you look. And I also agree with Janos's comments on Paul's post, which was "I'm fine with them undocumented. All of us who need to use these commands know where to find "documentation" and whom to ask ".
