  • What exactly is bootstrap admin-template and how it is supposed to be used

    So this is my second ASP.NET MVC 4 project. It's decided that for this one we will use this template and it was said in a way that I felt really stupid for not knowing how exactly this template will help us and what exactly we gain by using it. I'm used to using HTML/CSS for the UI combined with jQuery. Now it seems that instead of jQuery we will be using bootstrap which as far as I understand is just another JS library created from twitter, so if that's it then this part is clear. What I really need to clarify for myself is what exactly this theme is used for, what is offering, why one would want to use such a theme? From what I see in the live demo maybe it's just a stack of premade controls that you can use in the front end along with bootstrap.js and maybe I'm just confused because on the page is shown as much as possible just for presentational purposes. If that's right, still I wonder where I can find info for the current theme, the controls that it offers and the functionality that I get and not least - how to use it. But still those are just my assumptions. What I really need is a clarification on what exactly is this theme for, what is the advantage using it, is there a good tutorials about how to use such themes in the context of ASP.NET MVC 3+. Also any additional info about this theme and generally on using themes in ASP.NET MVC will be much appreciated.

  • Going from webforms, VS 2008, 3.5 framework to the "next level" based on my goals

    I've got a few choices to make as I develop some business websites that will run for the next two to three years. Currently I run ASP.NET 3.5 with Visual Studio 2008. I do my development rather crudely in WebForms because that's what I learned and am most productive with. I don't use Membership or any other frameworks in my projects. I use a simple class that maintains a few session keys for each user based on basic database tables for users and roles. (I have about 3,000 users). So far I've kept the data simple, using ADO.NET against SQL Server and a data access class (Circa 2000, I know) to build my sites. My questions are as follows: Under what conditions would I be better off moving to MVC? Under what conditions would I find LINQ and ORM a better way to go than standard ADO.NET? Would I benefit, in my current state of development, from going from Studio 2008 to Studio 2010?

  • How to run 2 X sessions with different display managers?

    I read about the virtual terminals a little and that gave me an idea. I searched for a way to have two X sessions simultaneously. I had a look at these sites : 1. How to run multiple user X sessions on the same computer, at the same time? 2. How to drag windows between 2 X servers? I tried startx -- :1 but my earlier terminal (on Ctrl+Alt+F7) hung up. How do I ensure this does not happen? My main need is to get Unity on :0 and Gnome-shell on :1 and switch between them like workspaces. As per 2., switching is not recommended as it is not easy. But if I get at least 1., then I'd be happy. I have Ubuntu 12.04 64bit.

    MVVM Light and PRISM offer messenger to implement event system. the approximate interface looks like the following one: interface Messanger { void Subscribe<TMessageParam>(Action<TMessageParam> action); void Unsubscribe<TMessageParam>(Action<TMessageParam> action); void Unsubscribe<TMessageParam>(objec actionOwner); void Notify<TMessageParam>(TMessageParam param); } Now this model seems beneficial comparing to classic .net events. It works well with Dependency Injection. Actions are stored as weak references so memory leaks are avioded and unsubscribe is not a must. The only annoyance is the need to declare new TMessageParam for each specific message. But everything comes at a cost. And what I'm really worried about is that I see no shortcomings of this approach. Has anoyne the experience of some troubles with this design pattern?

    I am using WPF, Prism and Unity to develop the user interface for a .net application. The UI will run from a PC, but I also need to develop a separate complex server component that will provide services to the PC component via WCF. Prism and Unity have proved to be of great value in creating a modular application, at least as far as the user interface is concerned. I would also like to make the server component modular, but I cannot find anywhere what techniques, patterns and technologies are suitable. I have considered: Unity or one of the other DI containers Selected parts of Prism, such as modules and events Are these suitable for developing a modular server component? Or are these UI technologies only and should I be looking at something completely different?

    I have been a C++ programmer for last several years with a bit of C# here and there. In my latest job, I work heavily on C#. I picked most of my C# by following the code-base or random google searches on what I wanted to do at that point (like threading in C#). I feel a time has come to invest some time into understanding the language internals and also understanding the .NET framework from an architectural point of view. Can someone recommend the "gold standard" text/resource for accomplishing these? What about that resource makes it the best? What were your experiences with it?

  • How to set individual NTFS partitions permissions behaviour for each user account?

    I have two NTFS partitions (DOWNLOADS for downloaded files and VM for my VirtualBox .vdi file) for which i must have full permissions for my allday use account. They should be also automounting when i login to this account. But i've also set Guest account for guests. For Guest account, i want make VM partition fully disabled and invisible (and thus it mustn't automount) but DOWNLOADS partition should be shared with limited privileges with Guest account. Editing fstab i'm able to share DOWNLOADS partition with Guest on limited privileges but VM can be only set to limited and have disabled automounting - so guest can't mount it but it still can be seen in Nautilus, plus I must always mount it manually when i login to allday account. Is there some trick to make what i want?   • Is there anything in .NET that allows me to define a grammar and generate a programming language?

    I have a course in which the proffesor has asked us to create a DSL for a our final project. He presented us in the first courses xText with Eclipse. This being a new course, I am still a bit fuzzy on what Domain Specific Languages means. This is my current understanding: a domain specific language is a language that is created for specific problems in software development. Examples of DSL's are PHP, SQL, JavaScript and on the opposite are languages like Java , C# , C++ , Ruby etc. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. What I would like to know: is there is any tool for .NET/Visual Studio that is similar to Xtext, that allows me to define a grammar and be allowed to generate a programming language based on that with an activity diagram?

  • Alternatives to using cookies?

    Whate are alternatives to using cookies/client-side storage for a PHP/MySQL based site on Apache. Scenario/Requirements: I want to try using some anti-bot code to prevent specific scrapers etc. from accessing the site. I would like to run this code before launching the rest of the site (before DB access etc.). I don't want to constantly run the same code on every page-load after a visitor has passed the initial check. I'd like to avoid the use of Cookies/Client side storage if at all possible. The only solution I can currently think of is to write files to the server based on the visitors IP/UA, or to write a list of them to a single file. Yet this has the limitation of multiple users through a proxy/same connection, etc ... So, any ideas/suggestions? Or am I simply over working the issue?

    Hi everybody, I am having the worst trouble getting around a bug, and am hoping that I can get some advice on this site. In short, I am trying to make an asynchronous web service call from my VB.NET application. But my "client_DownloadDataCompleted" callback is NEVER being called when the download is complete. There are a number of questiosn on StackOverflow that ALMOST hit this topic head on, but they are either for other technologies, reference obsolets information or don;t supply an answer that I can suss out. So pardon the almost duplication :) I have a working ADO.NET Data Service, and a WPF client that hits it. Now that they are working fine I want to add authentication / security to the system. My understanding of the steps so far is... Turn on forms authentication and configure it on the server (I have an existing asp.net membership service DB for other aspects of this app, so that isnt a problem) so that it is required for the service URL In WCF apply for and recieve a forms authentication "ticket" as part of a login routine Add that "ticket" to the headers of the ADO.NET service calls in WPF Profit! All well and good - but does anyone have a line on a soup to nuts code sample, using the modern releases of these technologies? Thanks!

    Good morning, everyone. I'm on a short-term contracting gig, trying to patch some vulnerabilities in their legacy code. The application I'm working on is a combination of Classic ASP(VBScript) and .Net 2.0 (C#). One of the tools they have purchased is Fortify 360. Let's say that this is a current classic ASP page in the application: <%@ Language=VBScript %> <% Dim var var = Request.QueryString("var") ' do stuff Response.Redirect "nextpage.asp?var=" & var %> I know, I know, short and very dangerous. So we wrote some (en/de)coders and validation/verification routines: <%@ Language=VBScript %> <% Dim var var = Decode(Request.QueryString("var")) ' do stuff if isValid(var) then Response.Redirect "nextpage.asp?var=" & Encode(var) else 'throw error page end if %> And still Fortify flags this as vulnerable to Header Manipulation. How or what exactly is Fortify looking for? The reason I suspect that Fortify is looking for specific key words is that on the .Net side of things, I can include the Microsoft AntiXss assembly and call functions such as GetSafeHtmlFragment and UrlEncode and Fortify is happy. Any advice?

    I'm building a 4 layered ASP.Net web application. The layers are: Data Layer Entity Layer Business Layer UI Layer The entity layer has my data model classes and is built from my entity data model (edmx file) in the datalayer using T4 templates (POCO). The entity layer is referenced in all other layers. My data layer has a class called SourceKeyRepository which has a function like so: public IEnumerable<SourceKey> Get(SourceKey sk) { using (dmc = new DataModelContainer()) { var query = from SourceKey in dmc.SourceKeys select SourceKey; if (sk.sourceKey1 != null) { query = from SourceKey in query where SourceKey.sourceKey1 == sk.sourceKey1 select SourceKey; } return query; } } Lazy loading is disabled since I do not want my queries to run in other layers of this application. I'm receiving the following error when attempting to access the information in the UI layer: The ObjectContext instance has been disposed and can no longer be used for operations that require a connection. I'm sure this is because my DataModelContainer "dmc" was disposed. How can I return this IEnumerable object from my data layer so that it does not rely on the ObjectContext, but solely on the DataModel? Is there a way to limit lazy loading to only occur in the data layer?

    I have a .Net object which I've been serializing to Xml and is decorated with Xml attributes. I would now like to serialize the same object to Json, preferably using the Newtonsoft Json.Net library. I'd like to go directly from the .Net object in memory to a Json string (without serializing to Xml first). I do not wish to add any Json attributes to the class, but instead would like for the Json serializer use the existing Xml attributes.
