  I'm writing permanent file deletion tool and accessing raw disk clusters. Since Windows Vista writing into raw disk is a bit more complicated. I have tried on my external data device first and worked fine, however one of the steps was dismounting of the volume, not sure if it is a good idea to dismount main volume where the Windows are. Want to ask that is possible consequences and if it safe/unsafe/very unsafe.

• Converting SVG to UFO files

  I am working in PhotoImpact X3, whose native file format is .UFO. I want to bring an SVG file into it, but it doesn't recognize SVG format. All online converters I find (trying to convert it to .PSD, which PhotoImpact X3 recognizes) convert the SVG to a raster format, first, and I don't want that. Does anyone know a way to import an SVG file into PhotoImpact X3? Preferably as a .UFO or .PSD file, but any scaleable vector file format will work.

• User not able to change permissions on folder in network share for Windows Server 2003

  I have a user that has rights to change permissions within a certain folder on a Windows Server 2003 network share. Although I grant this person the rights to change permission and ownership this person cannot change any permissions. The network share is also set to allow everyone full control. (I understand it is bad practice yet this is how it was first configured) Is there any reason why this domain user cannot modify permissions on the folder and files they create?

Every windows that is currently in focus, if I press the left shift-key alone, pops up the current window menu. I have no idea how and why this has happened, or how to disable it.   I would like to know if there is any way a file can be moved only if the destination does not exist - in other words, move only if it does not lead to overwriting. mv --update seemed first to be the solution, however, if the timestamp of the source path is newer than the destination, move will overwrite it and all attempts to circumvent this by modifying the timestamp before the move will fail. I need this behaviour to implement a simple file based lock where existence of a 'lock' file indicates that the lock is acquired.

• RHEL json gem installation requires make?

  When I try to install json gem (gem install json), at first it fails to do so, because of some dev package issue. After fixing it, it fails saying that "sh: make: command not found" and "ERROR: Error installing json: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.". Why is it failing on make? Notice this is not Mac, this is in RHEL 5 (4 or 5, not sure). Why is it not able to do some "build gem native extension"?

  I have 2 mail profiles - one profile has a single Exchange 2010 account and the other has a single IMAP account. I want to open an instance of Outlook for each. I execute outlook.exe /profile MyExchangeProfile for the Exchange profile and outlook.exe /profile MyIMAPProfile for the IMAP profile and the result is that I get 2 instances of Outlook each with the MyExchangeProfile. In fact, whichever profile I load first is always the one that gets loaded no matter what profile I specify on separate executions.

  I'm on a work laptop. If I do a 'net send' to all computers on the domain while not VPN'd into the network, and it says it's successful, one of the following is true: It failed, but thinks it's successful, and it won't send anything. It failed, but it will send next time it's on the work domain. I know I was off the domain when I sent it (I made sure of that first). What will happen?

• ImageMagick's `convert` utility takes *too much* memory with PDF input

  I often use ImageMagick's convert for *-PNG conversion, but when PDF has more than 50 pages — convert eats more that 3 Gib (!!!) of memory. I guess it first loads everything. That's unacceptable. It should read PDF page by page, why the heck all of them at once! Maybe there's a way to tune it somehow? Or any good alternatives?

  My Visual Studio 2008 freezes under some conditions. First, after a restart it is fine, but once it starts updating IntelliSense and counting down items it stops on the same number (the number slightly changed with further changes in the project). After that I get a sure freeze for: right-click in the code to get a context-menu changing from Debug to Release and vice versa quitting visual studio After a freeze I have to kill the process. • Specify drive letters during installation

  Hi all, The hard drive has two partitions. I'm installing Windows 7 on the second one. It automatically gets assigned the drive letter C (and the first partition becomes D). Is there any way to override this assignment during installation? It's a dual-boot system, and I want drive letters to be consistent. On the vanilla drive selection dialog, there's no letter assignment UI.
