• How to automate changing my ip?

  I am very new to OSX. I will use my MBP at work and home. I would like to be easily able to switch my ip when changing location. Thus far I have dabbled with the automator, hoping to do something like this: [pseudocode] If IP = 192.168.0.10 root# changeip 192.168.0.10 10.0.0.15 else root# changeip 10.0.0.15 192.168.0.10 The reason for this is that my IP from home will not allow me access at work and vice versa. I have friends and family who drop in now and then, multiple wireless devices set up for the home IP range. Changing all of that to accommodate one new device (the Macbook) would make me reconsider my foray into OSX. I'd rather have the MBP adapt to me than I to it.

• Changing the cell range of conditional formatting in LibreOffice Calc

  Is there any way of changing the range of conditional formatting in LibreOffice Calc (version 3.6)? I have a set applied already to a range of cells, but there is no obvious way of changing which cells a given set of conditional formatting is applied to. I either have to copy and paste the formatting, which results in multiple entries in the conditional formatting (which makes it difficult to manage), or delete the entire thing and create a new one every single time I want to change the range of cells. • Coders For Charities

  Last weekend I had the opportunity to give back to the community doing what I love. As geeks we don’t usually have this opportunity. The event is called Coders 4 Charities (C4C) and it’s a grueling weekend of coding for nearly 30 hours over the weekend. When you finish you get to present to the charity and all of the other groups what you have completed. From the site: Coders For Charities is a 3-day charity event that pairs charities and local software developers. Charities often do not have the funds to implement a new website or intranet or database solution. Software developers often do not volunteer for charities because their skills do not apply. This event is the perfect marriage of these two needs; software developers volunteering their time to help charities better serve their community though the latest technology! The actual event was lined with multiple charities and about 50 developers, designers, business analysts, etc, each working with a different charity to come up with a solution that they could implement in less than 3 days. C4C provided a place and food for us so that we wouldn’t have to leave much during the time we had to implement our solution. They also provided games like Rock Band so we could get away and clear our minds for a few moments if necessary. I don’t think we made it down there to play, but the food and drinks were a huge help for us. The charity we we picked was Harvest Home. They had a need for an online intranet site where they could track membership and gardening. Over the next few days we worked on a site we could give them. Below is a screen shot with private data marked out. It was an awesome and humbling experience to be able to give back to a charity and I’m happy I was a part of it. I would definitely do it again. How often do we get to use our abilities to volunteer our time to a charity?

• Setting up fail2ban to ban failed phpMyAdmin login attempts

  We've been using fail2ban to block failed ssh attempts. I would like to setup the same thing for phpMyAdmin as well. As phpMyAdmin doesn't log authentication attempts to a file (that I know of), I'm unsure of how best to go about this. Does a plugin / config exist that makes phpMyAdmin log authentication attempts to a file? Or is there some other place I should look for such an activity log? Ideally I will be able to find a solution that involved modifying fail2ban config only, as I have to configure fail2ban with the same options on multiple servers, and would prefer not to also modify the various phpMyAdmin installations on said servers.

• iOS: Using Jenkins for nightly internal builds (TestFlight), plus frequent client builds

  I'm an iOS dev, working for a small agency. I'm currently on a few smaller projects where I'm the only developer. We recently acquired a Jenkins server, but each project is left to fend for themselves as for how to use it. I'd like to use it for making and distributing builds. My ideal would be: Every commit is built as a single IPA that is placed in a HTTP-accessible location. (It only needs to keep the latest one, otherwise the disk would fill up — some of our apps are 500MB or more.) Once a day it makes a build, signs it with our internal provisioning profile, tacks a build number onto the end of the version number, and sends it to our internal TestFlight team. When manually prompted, it builds the latest commit, gives it a manually specified version number, signs it with the client's provisioning profile and sends it to TestFlight. I'm pretty new to Jenkins. The developer who set up the server is running it on one of our projects, so I know it has the right stuff installed to do Xcode builds. I believe he's only using it to run unit tests though, not to do any of the code signing, IPA creation or TestFlight stuff. So my questions: I've listed three distinct kinds of build. How does Jenkins cope with that? I see there's a "build triggers" section in the config for a Jenkins project, but it doesn't seem to mention different types of build. Should I just set up multiple Jenkins projects, called "App X (continuous)", "App X (nightly)" and "App X (client)"? How do I specify the provisioning profile through Jenkins? If there isn't a way, I guess I could make different configurations in the Xcode project… Has anyone else used Jenkins to actually do the release (i.e. build and push to TestFlight) of beta builds of their apps? Is it a good idea? Or should I continue just doing it manually?

• SQL Azure Pricing

  Microsoft’s pricing for SQL Server in the cloud, SQLAzure has been announced: $9.99   per month for 0 – 1GB $99.99 per month up to 10GB. There’s currently a 10GB maximum size cap for SQLAzure. For larger data storage needs, you’ll need to break the databases into smaller sizes. Scaling SQL Azure Applications If you think you’re going to need 100GB in the near term, it probably makes sense to break your application up into multiple separate databases from the get-go (10 x $9.99 = $99.99 anyway) and just make really sure none of the individual databases exceed 10GB. Beep Beep, Back That Database Up The bandwidth costs for SQL Azure are $.15 per GB of outbound bandwidth.  Assuming that you don’t compress the data before you pull it out of the cloud, that means daily backups of a 1GB database will add another $4.50 per month, and a 10GB database will add another $45/month.  Daily backups will cost about half of what your monthly service charges cost. It’s not completely clear from the press release, but if Microsoft follows Amazon’s pricing model, bandwidth between the Microsoft cloud services will not incur a cost.  That would mean it might make sense to spin up an Windows Azure computing application for $.12 per hour, use that application to compress your SQL Azure database, and then send the compressed data off to Azure storage for backup.  That would eliminate the data in/out costs, and minimize the Azure storage costs ($.15/GB).  Database administrators would back up their SQL Azure data to Azure Storage, keep a history of backups there, and restore them to SQL Azure faster when needed. Of course, there’s no native backup support in SQL Azure, and it’s not clear whether Windows Azure will include tools like SQL Server Integration Services. • SQL Server 2008 Express - "Best" backup solution?

  What backup solutions would you recommend when using SQL Server 2008 Express? I'm pretty new to SQL Server, but as I'm coming from an MySQL background I thought of setting up replication on another computer and just take Xcopy backups of that server. But unfortunately replication is not available in the Express Edition. The site is heavily accessed, so there has to be no delays and downtime. I'm also thinking of doing a backup twice a day or something. What would you recommend? I have multiple computers I can use, but I don't know if that helps me since I'm using the Express version.

• Light Voip and IM server for small teams

  So I have a small group that would need a self hosted Im/voip and possibly video conferencing solution. My goal is for a small group of people (no more than 40) to be able to collaborate within a local area network. I need something that is self hosted, so unfortunately outside solutions like Skype and hosted Lync would not work. I'm looking for something that would allow both one on one, and group communication, so and IRC server would not work. I'm hopefully looking for something that does not require multiple servers, or is too complex to set up. As a student, I have a license of Lync 2013, but setting that up on a single server without active directory is practically impossible. Would Lync 2010 be easier to do on a single server? Are there any other good solutions? Thanks

• Oracle SOA Suite customer panel: Successful Application Integration & SOA Projects

  At the recent SOA Suite customer panel, Roger Brown from UNS Energy, Fabio Ravagni from Cencosud and Paras Jain from Cisco discussed their recent SOA Suite implementations, business drivers and challenges, architecture and lessons learned. Roger started by describing how UNS redesigned their internet portal to improve their customer experience and reduce manual steps in their business processes. Through the use of Oracle Service Bus, Oracle BPEL Process Manager and Oracle Business Activity Monitoring, they provided more self-service functionality, automated their business processes and increased the use of their web site by 12.98% for number of visits and 33.58% for average visit duration. The screenshot below shows the UNS architecture: > Next Fabio described the challenges Cencosud faced through continuous expansion of their business, different standards and levels of expertise and large volumes of information. By introducing Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle Enterprise Repository, and with the help of Oracle Consulting, they significantly simplified their integration model, reduced their maintenance effort and increased their integration governance. • Magic Mouse problems dragging and dropping files in finder (Mac OSX 10.6.3)

  I have an issue dragging files around in the finder with my Magic Mouse. For example, I was trying to select and drag multiple files from the desktop onto an external hard drive. However, whenever I do so, the files either end up deselected (and the move doesn't happen). If I try to drag a single file, finder ends up doing whatever it does to enable the file to be renamed. Reverting back to the touchpad works fine. Is there a problem with drag-and-drop with this mouse, or is there a setting that I am missing (I've scoured the settings, and nothing is jumping out at me). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

• Caching of path environment variable on windows?

  I'm assisting one of our testers in troubleshooting a configuration problem on a Windows XP SP3 system. Our application uses an environment variable, called APP_HOME, to refer to the directory where our application is installed. When the application is installed, we utilize the following environment variables: APP_HOME = C:\application\ PATH = %PATH%;%APP_HOME%bin Now, the problem comes in that she's working with multiple versions of the same application. So, in order to switch between version 7.0 and 8.1, for example, she might use: APP_HOME = C:\application_7.0\ (for 7.0) and then change it to: APP_HOME = C:\application_8.1\ (for 8.1) The problem is that once this change is made, the PATH environment variable apparently still is looking at the old expansion of the APP_HOME variable. So, for example, after she has changed APP_HOME, PATH still refers to the 7.0 bin directory. Any thoughts on why this might be happening? It looks to me like the PATH variable is caching the expansion of the APP_HOME environment variable. Is there any way to turn this behavior off?

• Quickly open Windows Mobility Center in Windows 8 "tablet" mode

  I am using a Surface Pro (2013). I would like to know if there is a quick way to open the Windows Mobility Center desktop program. I like to use this program because it is easy to manipulate during the "tablet" (non-keyboard, no-mouse) mode. This program has multiple ways to be started, according to From How to Open and Use Mobility Center in Windows 7 and Windows 8: (Windows 8) Press Windows key + X and select Mobility Center Open the Control Panel and select "Windows Mobility Center" Open the Run dialog and type "mblctr.exe" and press Enter key. None of these are quick and easy when in "tablet" mode. I would ideally like to swipe from right screen edge into to open the Settings pop up and select one icon that opens the Mobility Center. Alternatively, another way I would like to have implemented would be to touch the Windows icon on the tablet screen outside of the viewing area and touch an "app" to launch the Mobility Center. Alternatively, it would be nice to have a Live Tile App that duplicates this functionality.

One problem thought their 'tutorial' is really NOT noob friendly I have basic DNS knoledge but what's in there is out of my league. Any help in setting up this DNS server please ? I need to have multiple sites on this CentOs server I've recently got my hands on :). They also need to receive email. • Performance difference between MacBook Pro (2.8 GHz) vs Air (1.7 GHz)?

  I'm comparing these two Apple laptops: MacBook Pro (13", 2011 model): 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor with 4MB shared L3 cache 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 memory on 2.4GHz configuration MacBook Air (13", 2011 model): 1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 onboard memory Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory There's definitely a gap between them in terms of CPU speed and graphics, but what practical difference would this make on a day-to-day basis? On the one hand, I love the sleek, thin appearance of the Air. On the other hand, I don't want a machine that's going to be dog-slow when doing tasks such as running Virtual Machines, dual-booting to Windows and running multiple instances of Visual Studio, and maybe some light gaming. Is there going to be a major difference that makes the MacBook Pro a more attractive purchase?

• Other games that employ mechanics like the game "Diplomacy"

  I'm doing a little bit of research and I'm hoping you can help me track down any games, other than Diplomacy (online version here), that employ all or some of the mechanics in Diplomacy (rules, short form). Examples I'm looking for: Simultaneous orders given prior to execution of orders In Diplomacy, players "write down" their moves and execute them "at the same time" Support, in terms of supporting an attacker or defender "take" a territory. In Diplomacy, no one unit is stronger than another you need to combine the strength of multiple units to attack other territories. Rules for how move conflicts are resolved Example, 2 units move into a space, but only one is allowed, what happens. I may add to this list later, but these are the primary things I'm looking for. If you need clarification on anything just let me know. Note: I tried asking this on GamingSE, but it was shot down. So, I am unsure where else I could post this. Since I am researching this for game development purposes, I assume this post is on topic. Please let me know if this is not the case. Please also feel free to re-categorize this. Thanks!

• How to reference other locations in making multi-boot live cd

  There is a tool in pen drive linux that allows you to boot directly with multiple iso files. And here is a sample in the menu.lst which allows you to choose which iso file you want to boot. title Fedora 13 find --set-root /Fedora-12-i686-L.iso map /ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso (0xff) map --hook root (0xff) kernel /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper persistent iso-scan/filename=/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso splash initrd /casper/initrd.lz I'm just using it on my 8gb flash drive and the location of the iso file is in the flash drive itself. Is it possible to reference other locations. So that I could boot from it, without limitations. because the flash drive can only contain 8gb of data. Is it possible? Anyone here tried this before?

• SkyDrive and Consumer Cloud Services

  Paul Thurrrott recently posted an article on the future of SkyDrive and I was asked what I thought about its future by @UserCommunity.  So let’s take a look. The breakdown from Microsoft that Paul described I believe is an accurate representation of users and usages. While I can’t say that I leverage SkyDrive to the extent that it was meant to be I do enjoy having OneNote hosted their and being able to consult and edit it from the desktop, web and Windows Phone. Taking that one step further is the Midwest Geeks group which started as the community of Microsoft related user groups in our region uses SkyDrive groups and shares calendars and documents.  This collaboration aspect isn’t new in itself, but having it connected with the rest of your cloud assets makes life easier. Another recent usage of this type of cloud service is storing your personal music files in order to get that same universal access.  This is a scenario that has some arguments for and against.  On the one hand own once and listen anywhere is great, but the on the other hand the bandwidth cost becomes a giant downside.  This is especially the case since most carriers are now doing away with unlimited data packages. • Web workflow solution - how should I approach the design?

  We've been tasked with creating a web based workflow tool to track change management. It has a single workflow with multiple synchronous tasks for the most part, but branch out at a point to tasks running in parallel which meet up later on. There will be all sorts of people using the application, and all of them will need to see their outstanding tasks for each change, but only theirs, not others. There will also be a high level group of people who oversee all changes, so need to see everything. They will need to see tasks which have not been done in the specified time, who's responsible etc. The data will be persisted to a SQL database. It'll all be put together using .Net. I've been trying to learn and implement OOP into my designs of late, but I'm wondering if this is moot in this instance as it may be better to have the business logic for this in stored procedures in the DB. I could use POCO's, a front end layer and a data access layer for the web application and just use it as a mechanism for CRUD actions on the DB, then use SP's fired in the DB to apply the business rules. On the other hand, I could use an object oriented design within the web app, but as the data in the app is state-less, is this a bad idea? I could try and model out the whole application into a class structure, implementing interfaces, base classes and all that good stuff. So I would create a change class, which contained a list of task classes/types, which defined each task, and implement an ITask interface etc. Put end-user types into the tasks to identify who should be doing what task. Then apply all the business logic in the respective class methods etc. What approach do you guys think I should be using for this solution?

• Are SANs unreliable?

  So at the place where I wear one of my various hats, this one representing a development rather than admin role, there's been an initiative to move to SANs. So far, I have been spectacularly unimpressed. First it was this behavior where, when MySQL databases are on the SAN, the first few tables that anything tries to hit after the system boots come up as nonexistent and MySQL has to be restarted before it realizes they're actually there. Then today, on multiple systems (including the primary SVN repository, ever-so-wonderfully) we get SAN mounts spewing IO errors and the filesystems going into read-only, which is the kind of behavior I expect from directly mounted naked disks, not fault-tolerant managed storage. Right now, I'm at the point where if I were putting together a project and somebody said "hey we should use SANs", my response would be "GTFO". So basically I want to know whether my experience is typical or even common, or whether I'm having some kind of freakishly bad luck with SANs. The systems these SANs are attached to are all CentOS machines, if that's relevant.

  Since I do not want to pay money for my testing, the free limit size is 10G. I can know the root device root for some default AMI such as Amazon Linux AMI 2012.03 The Amazon Linux AMI 2012.03 is an EBS-backed, PV-GRUB image. It includes Linux 3.2, AWS tools, and repository access to multiple versions of MySQL, PostgreSQL, Python, Ruby, and Tomcat. Root Device Size: 8 GB And the last row displayed 8GB. However, if I find AMI in Community Page, it does not show the root device size. Can anyone know how to use the instance such as centOS that is not provided by default but it is under 10GB so that I can still free use?

• Exclude IPs from FQDN Resolution

  Is there a way to EXCLUDE IPs on an interface from FQDN resulution? Here's my use case; I have a domain joined Windows Server 2008 R2 machine that hosts multiple Web sites. We ahve DNS A records for the various sites that resolve to different IP addresses. I've added those IPs to the single NIC in the machine and the sites work just fine. The problem is that the FQDN of the machine now resolves any of the IPs on the machine. I only want the primary IP associated with the FQDN on the internal DNS servers. Is there ANY way to accomplish this? jon

  I'm working on a simple "DB" for some people at work and I don't want to do anything fancy. the fields should be something like name , number , notes , File:resume, notes (where file:notes is the acutall embedded resume. I cant see any obvious way to do this but i thought i would ask just the same. Is there a way to take a (pdf , doc , docx , txt) and throw it into a cell so a user can click on it and it will open the file in the approate program note: this db is going to be floating around between multiple sites so linking won't work.

Using the database, our client wants its customers to be able to log into a frontend web site and then be able to view, modify and download their company’s invoices. Given the size of the database and the large number of customers who may log into the web site at any time, we are concerned about data base engine performance and web page invoice rendering performance. The 1 million invoice database is for just 90 days sales, so we will remove invoices over 90 days old from the database. Most of the invoices have multiple line items. We can easily convert our invoices into various data formats so for example it is easy for us to convert to and from SQL to XML with related schema and XSLT. Any data conversion would be done on another server so as not to burden the web interface server. We have tentatively decided to run the web site on a .NET Framework IIS web server using MS SQL on MS Azure. How would you suggest we structure our database for best performance? For example, should we put all the invoices of all customers located within the same 5 digit or 6 digit zip codes into the same table? Or could we set up a separate home directory for each customer on IIS and place each customer’s invoices in each customer’s home directory in XML format? And secondly what would you suggest would be the best method to render customer invoices on a web page and allow customers to modify for best performance? The ADO.net XML Data Set looks intriguing to us as a method, but we have never used it.
