• SQL Server deadlocks between select/update or multiple selects

  All of the documentation on SQL Server deadlocks talks about the scenario in which operation 1 locks resource A then attempts to access resource B and operation 2 locks resource B and attempts to access resource A. However, I quite often see deadlocks between a select and an update or even between multiple selects in some of our busy applications. I find some of the finer points of the deadlock trace output pretty impenetrable but I would really just like to understand what can cause a deadlock between two single operations. Surely if a select has a read lock the update should just wait before obtaining an exclusive lock and vice versa? This is happening on SQL Server 2005 not that I think this makes a difference.

• Voice Recognition Connection problem

  I,m trying to work through and test a Voice Recognition example based on the VoiceRecognition.java example at http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/example/android/apis/app/VoiceRecognition.html but when click on the button to create the activity, I get a dialog that says Connection problem. My Manifest file is using the Internet Permission, and I understand it passes the to the Google Servers. Do I need to do anything else to use this. Code below UPDATE 2: Thanks to Steve, I have been able to install the USB Driver and debug the app directly on my Droid. • Biztalk Ordered Delivery direct bound to multiple ports

  Hi, another ordered delivery problem. We have an orchestration which is bound to a send port which has ordered delivery true. Another send port also picks up these messages through filtering, this port also has ordered delivery. Now for some reason when there are multiple ports using the message and one of these is directly port binded only one of the ports is being used. I mean that not both ports give an output. If i unenlist one of the ports it's always outputted, this works in both ways. We used to have this with 2 ports which both used filters instead, this worked but we had to change one to a direct port, the problem occured since then. Also the choice of ports for BizTalk is pretty random, because on our server it for example chooses port A and when I recreate the same problem on my local machine it for example choses port B. It's kind of a weird problem and we have no idea what could be the cause.

  I have recently moved my solution from my main dev machine using vs2010 pro sp1 to a new machine. The setup is supposed to be the same except its failing to build. Its giving errors like c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets(1360,9): warning MSB3258: The primary reference "C:\rep\hms\trunk\ikassystemv3\ikasDAL\bin\Debug\ikasDAL.dll" could not be resolved because it has an indirect dependency on the .NET Framework assembly "mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" which has a higher version "4.0.0.0" than the version "2.0.0.0" in the current target framework. However all all the libraries in question are set to use the .net 2 framework and I need it this way or else it will break stuff that uses them. However for some reason it seems to think that somehow my .net 2 system libs are somehow referencing .net 4 stuff.   I need to take an array of three lines in a text file and sort them base on the first line in Java. I also need to manipulate this as well and then print to screen. I have a test file that is formatted like this: 10 Michael Jackson 12 Richard Woolsey I need to input this from a text file and then rearrange it based on the number associated with the name. At that point, I need to use a random number generator and assign a variable based on the random number to each name. Then I need to print to screen the variable I added and the name in a different format. Here is an example of the output: 12: Woolsey, Richard Variable assigned 10: Jackson, Michael Other variable assigned I highly appreciate any help. • How can I get TFS 2010 to build each project to a separate directory?

  In our project, we'd like to have our TFS build put each project into its own folder under the drop folder, instead of dropping all of the files into one flat structure. To illustrate, we'd like to see something like this: DropFolder/ Foo/ foo.exe Bar/ bar.dll Baz baz.dll This is basically the same question as was asked here, but now that we're using workflow-based builds, those solutions don't seem to work. The solution using the CustomizableOutDir property looked like it would work best for us, but I can't get that property to be recognized. I customized our workflow to pass it in to MSBuild as a command line argument (/p:CustomizableOutDir=true), but it seems MSBuild just ignores it and puts the output into the OutDir given by the workflow. I looked at the build logs, and I can see that the CustomizableOutDir and OutDir properties are both getting set in the command line args to MSBuild. I still need OutDir to be passed in so that I can copy my files to TeamBuildOutDir at the end. Any idea why my CustomizableOutDir parameter isn't getting recognized, or if there's a better way to achieve this?

I want the line breaks to be preserved. • WPF Custom Control - ItemsControl template not being applied.

  I'm building a custom WPF control that derives from TabControl. In the ControlTemplate, I'm using a ItemsControl to display a list that is being bound from the template (an observable collection of type FileMenuItem). During program execution, I'm getting the following error in the output window: ItemTemplate and ItemTemplateSelector are ignored for items already of the ItemsControl's container type; Type='FileMenuItem' The type FileMenuItem is derived from MenuItem. I googled the error and couldn't find anything about it, has anyone run into this while developing custom controls? I can post more code if it would help. Thanks!

• Annotating axis in ggplot2

  I am looking for the way to annotate axis in ggplot2. The example of the problem can be found here: http://learnr.wordpress.com/2009/09/24/ggplot2-back-to-back-bar-charts. The y axis of the chart (example graph in the link) has an annotation: (million euro). Is there a way to create such types of annotations in ggplot2? Looking at the documentation there is no obvious way, since the ggplot does not explicitly let you put objects outside plotting area. But maybe there is some workaround? One of the possible workarounds I thought about is using scales: data=data.frame(x=1:10,y=1:10) qplot(x=x,y=y,data=data)+scale_y_continuous(breaks=10.1,label="Millions") But then how do I remove the tick? And it seems that since ggplot does not support multiple scales, I will need to grab the output of the scale_y_continuous, when it calculates the scales automaticaly and then add my custom break and label by hand. Maybe there is a better way?

  Hi, I'm a bit confused about a strange behavior of my JPA's related objects. I have three bundle : The User bundle does contain some user-related objects, but mainly the User object. The Energy bundle does contain some energy-related objects, and particularly a ConsumptionTerminal which contains a List of User. The Index bundle does contain an Index object that has no dependency at all. My OSGi environment is the following : A DataSource bundle that provide 2 services : dataSource and jpaVendorAdapter. The three bundles. They consume dataSource and jpaVendorAdapter. And finally, I'm using EclipseLink as Jpa provider and Spring DM (+ Spring DM Server in the development process) The problem is the following : When the User bundle is deployed, I'm able to persist User objects. When the User bundle and Energy bundles are both deployed, I'm not able to persist User objects (neither the Energy object). But I don't have any exception at all ! There is no problem at all with the Index bundle. The bug is dataSource independent (I tried with PostgreSQL and MySQL so far). My first conclusion was that the <class>net.nextep.amundsen.security.domain.User</class> in both persistence unit was causing the trouble. I tried without it (and hiding the User dependent object in the Energy bundle) but it failed too. I'm a bit confused about that bug. I'm also not quite sure about the transaction management in this context. I wasn't the one who designed this architecture (but I tell my intern OK without testing it.. shame on me) but if I could understand this bug and maybe fix it without rewrite the bundle (and break my intern work), I would appreciate. Am I doing something wrong ? (it's obvious, but what..) Did I miss something while reading documentation ? By the way, I'm also looking for some best practices or advices when it comes to JPA, EclipseLink (or whatever JPA Provider) and Spring DM (and OSGi in general).   I've just installed Visual Studio 2010 and have created a new MVC2 project so that I can learn about the changes and updates and have discovered an issue with areas that I'm not sure what to make of. I created a new EMPTY MVC2 project I right clicked the project and, from the context menu, added a new area called "Test" In the new test area, I added a controller called "Data". • Create Excel (.XLS and .XLSX) file from C#

  What is the best tool for creating an Excel Spreadsheet with C#. Ideally, I would like open source so I don't have to add any third party dependencies to my code, and I would like to avoid using Excel directly to create the file (using OLE Automation.) The .CSV file solution is easy, and is the current way I am handling this, but I but I would like to control the output formats. EDIT: I am still looking at these to see the best alternative for my solution. Interop will work, but it requires Excel to be on the machine you are using. Also the OLEDB method is intriguing, but may not yield much more than what I can achieve with CSV files. I will look more into the 2003 xml format, but that also puts a Excel 2003 requirement on the file. I am currently looking at a port of the PEAR (PHP library) Excel Writer that will allow some pretty good XLS data and formatting and it is in the Excel_97 compatible format that all modern versions of Excel support. • Weak-linking with static libraries

  I have declared an external function with a GCC weak attribute in a .c file: extern int weakFunction( ) __attribute__ ((weak)); Compiled object file has weakFunction defined as a weak symbol. Output of nm: 1791: w weakFunction I am calling the weak defined function as follows: if (weakFunction != NULL) { weakFunction(); } When I link the program by defining the object files as parameters to GCC (gcc main.o weakf.o -o main.exe) weak symbols work fine. If I leave the weakf.o out of linking, the function address is NULL in main.c and the function won't be called. Problem is, when weakf.o is inside a static library, for some reason the linker doesn't find the function and the function address always ends up being NULL. Static library is created with ar: ar rcs weaklibrary weakf.o Anyone had similar problems?

  Hi I'm getting a strange error when building my WCF RIA Services Silverlight project in VS2008. In the output I have this message: C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\Silverlight\v3.0\Microsoft.Ria.Client.targets(261,5): error : Failed to write the generated contents of 'C:\projects\[Path_To_Silverlight_Project]\Generated_Code\Analytics.Web.g.cs' to Visual Studio. ...and Visual Studio opens a dialog while building with the following: An editor or project is attempting to save a file that is modified in memory. Saving files during a build is dangerous and may result in incorrect build outputs in the future. Continue with save? The other members on my team seems to be doing just fine, but I can't get past this point (I can if I click 'Continue' which then generate the file just fine but I'm reluclant to do so). There must be some setup or similar that I'm missing here... PS: I'm currently on WinXP and WCF RIA Service beta

• Crontab no error but doesn't execute script

  I'm trying to execute a shell script from cron on Freebsd. To test wether crontab is working at all, i wrote the line * * * * * echo "Hello" /home/myuser/logile and it work fine. But when trying to execute any script it doesn't do anything, not even an error. (In the script i tried to run is just the same echo command) Below is the output of crontab -l: SHELL=/bin/sh PATH=/etc:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin HOME=/home/myuser MAILTO=myuser * * * * * /home/myuser/shellscript.sh /home/myuser/logfile why is the script not getting executed, although crontab is obviously running? permission for all files are set to rwxr-xr-x

  Hi, We were connecting to Oracle from our code with a simple (custom) JDBC connector class. This class reads the connection properties from a resource file and tries to make a connection to Oracle (thin connection). However, recently the database have moved to a RAC and now the application is unable to connect to the DB.
