• What is the difference between running a Windows service vs. running through shell?

  I am trying to troubleshoot an issue on a Windows 2008 server where running attempting to connect to a "Timberline Data Source" ODBC driver crashes if the call is in a "service" context, but succeeds if the call is initiated manually in a Remote Desktop session. I have set the service to run as my user. I'm wondering if, all else being equal (user, machine, etc), are there any fundamental security/environment differences between running a process as a service vs manually? --- Implementation Details --- In case it is helpful for anyone, I had a system that started as an attempt to connect to a Timberline Database using ODBC and a Python CGI script called via IIS 7. The script itself works fine, however, as soon as I attempt to perform the ODBC connect function, the script crashes without throwing an exception. The script was able to connect fine when executed via command line. The same thing happened when using a C#/.net service, attempting to run via Apache, Windows Scheduler or even a 3rd party scheduling tool. With the last option (the 3rd party scheduling tool, pycron) I set the service up log in as my user and had the same issue (I confirmed via Task Manager that the process running user was, in fact, me). It just doesn't make sense to me why a service, which should be running as my user, appears to still be operating in a different security context or environment. Also, if it's important, the Timberline database is referenced by computer name on the network ("\\timberline-server\Timberline Office\Accounts\AT" or something to that effect) I also realized that, as Joel pointed out, the server DOES have a mapped drive ("Y:" which is mapped to "\\timberline-server\Timberline Office") The DSN is set up at the "System DSN" level which, according to the ODBC Administration Tool, means that the DSN is available to users and services Since I'm not allowed to answer this question yet, I'll post the solution that I arrived on: As Joel Coel mentioned, there actually was a mapped drive scenario. I didn't realize this because the DSN specified a path using UNC. However, it seems as though the actual Timberline Driver referred to a mapped drive. Since services don't start with the mapped drive, I was forced to add the drive mapping code into my service. Since it was written in python, I used code from a Stackoverflow answer that was able to map the drive on the fly.

• Nginx https rewrite turns POST to GET

  My proxy server runs on ip A and this is how people access my web service. The nginx configuration will redirect to a virtual machine on ip B. Everything that hits the public IP will hit 443 because of the rewrite. Internally, we are forwarding to 80 on the virtual machine. But when I run a python script such as the one below to test our configuration import requests data = {'username': '....', 'password': '.....'} url = 'http://IP_A/api/service/signup' res = requests.post(url, data=data, verify=False) print res print res.json print res.status_code print res.headers I am getting a 405 Method Not Allowed. In nginx we found that when it hit the internal server, the internal nginx was getting a GET request, even though in the original header we did a POST (this was shown in the Python script). So it seems like rewrite has problem. Any idea how to fix this? When I commented out the rewrite, it hits 80 for sure, and it went through. Since rewrite was able to talk to our internal server, so rewrite itself has no issue. It's just the rewrite dropped POST to GET. Thank you! (This will also be asked on Nginx forum because this is a critical blocker...)

If I can make the conversion using the commandline that would be perfect. Yes I know notepad can do that but this is meant to be automated.

  I need to add startup and shutdown scripts from a CLI through a Powershell/Python/CMD script. Ideally, I would like to have the same functionality as gpedit.msc, but it is important that the tasks of adding and removing such scripts do not require user interaction and can be done entirely within the context of a script. • URL not responding on OS X, fine on other machine

  For some reason I can't access anything on python.org. nslookup resolves the IP address, but no browser or curl command will fetch anything. It works fine on a VMWare Ubuntu virtual machine and on a Windows machine on the same network. I've checked there's nothing funny in /etc/hosts I don't know where else to go looking for issues, can anyone suggest anything? Running OS X 10.5 Leopard

I would also like a section that shows the tasks for today and another for high-priority tasks coming up within a week. I have not programmed in Excel before. I am a regular applications and systems programmer with no real idea of how to even get started. I have tried to start a few times, rails, django, tornado, web.py, cherrypy, but always get discouraged and quit. The most web programming I have done was in HTML during 1995 for my geocities site. I have pretty decent experience with regular programming in C, Python, Assembly and Java. Just looking for a way to get started and get a good overview of the different technologies and frameworks. I am not doing this for a job or employment, just to learn.

We decide this based on what i seen in cocos2d iphone games , but i don't get very clear if cocos2d-iphone is just a porting with just a little more features or is far more better than cocos2d for pc. If you can get me out of this dilemma it would be great.   Apple launched its new programming language Swift at WWDC14. In the presentation, they made some performance comparisons between Objective-C and Python. The following is a picture of one of their slides, of a comparison of those three languages performing some complex object sort: There was an even more incredible graph about a performance comparison using the RC4 encryption algorithm. Obviously this is a marketing talk, and they didn't go into detail on how this was implemented in each. I leaves me wondering though: How can a new programming language be so much faster? Are the Objective-C results caused by a bad compiler or is there something less efficient in Objective-C than Swift? How would you explain a 40% performance increase? I understand that garbage collection/automated reference control might produce some additional overhead, but this much?

  Revolution R Enterprise is available as a red-hat rpm file. Normally I would use alien to install an rpm file, but the instructions for installing this package have an install.py file that I am supposed to execute. When I ./install.py, I get the following instructions: rpm: please use alien to install rpm packages on Debian, if you are really sure use --force-debian switch. See README.Debian for more details. There is no README.Debian file in the directory, and although I am not proficient in python, I can tell that there are at least four different directories with *rpm files in them. Has anyone had success with this? If possible, I'd prefer to install the Enterprise version instead of community version in the Ubuntu repository so that I can test it out.

• Modern programming language with intuitive concurrent programming abstractions

  I am interested in learning concurrent programming, focusing on the application/user level (not system programming). I am looking for a modern high level programming language that provides intuitive abstractions for writing concurrent applications. I want to focus on languages that increase productivity and hide the complexity of concurrent programming. To give some examples, I don't consider a good option writing multithreaded code in C, C++, or Java because IMHO my productivity is reduced and their programming model is not intuitive. On the other hand, languages that increase productivity and offer more intuitive abstractions such as Python and the multiprocessing module, Erlang, Clojure, Scala, etc. would be good options. What would you recommend based on your experience and why?

Coming from a very rural part of the country where there is a huge opportunity for charity events like this, it got me wondering. Are there other large movements like GiveCamp that are out there? GiveCamp is sponsored by Microsoft, so of course most are run through .NET user groups. Are there other flavors of it? Different types? Java/Python/other open source charity movements? If not, how do you give back?

• Autocad on linux ubuntu 11.10!

  I am trying 3 years now installing autocad,3ds max and revit architecture on ubuntu with the help of wine!Every year i am very optimistic cause i see the new wine versions already improved.So, now i am starting again in a clean ubuntu install to install the autocad 2013 with the wine version wine1.4.I am not trying to have an answer only for me but i want all this ubuntu community try for this and finally we can achieve that!The winetricks have already net framework 4 to install which is the reason i have not already ran in the pas autocad.So, i would like to remove completely my windows 7 partition from my pc and go on a linux machine without loosing the powerfull architectural programms.I know all about blender and staff so i just want you to help find a solution on that because i know there is a solution!Maybe i will have to learn all the c++ or python etc staff.But i am sure that a solution can come with the help of all of us!Any suggestion about this problem will be very nice and helpfull. • Is Haskell worth learning?

  I am looking at this question primarily from a career point of view, so I hope you answer it accordingly. I am fairly proficient with Python, can write C++ and I am a final year student of computer science engineering I am looking to learn Haskell because I have heard a lot about it. My question is: apart from learning it because of all the good I have heard about it, is it any good for my career? Is it used in the industry? I am curious to learn it but unless it helps me somehow in my career, I am not willing to make that change at this stage. Looking for some personal experiences here. Thanks!
