• Apps crashing with EXC_BAD_ACCESS when changing to a custom keyboard layout

  I have a custom layout installed (svdvorak_mac6.keylayout). After a reboot another keyboard layout was selected, so I selected my usual one instead. This lead to a lot of apps suddenly starting to crash (Chrome, Skype, Adium etc). I can change to any other built in layout for OS X, but as soon as I choose one custom installed one (either form ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ or from /Library/Keyboard Layouts/) the apps crash. The only thing I can remember that I did before the reboot was to install Google's video chat plugin for the browser. • Win7 playback of dvr-ms files stutters

  I've just had to install Windows 7 on my Media Center machine because my Vista installation had a faulty drive. I've got the latest drivers that I can find - Intel 945GM integrated Graphics, Realtek audio drivers. Things are working OK with one exception. Playback of old recordings, from dvr-ms format files, is choppy. The picture freezes for a fraction of a second, then quickly catches up. The sound is uninterrupted and doesn't pause. These freezes happen once every 5 seconds or so. It's very regular. Playback of Live TV from the digital tuner is perfectly smooth. DVD playback is perfectly smooth. As an experiment, I used the MPEG editing package VideoReDo to create a small test file in three different formats. This program takes the raw MPEG streams and repackages them into the desired container. I took the same clip and created three files in three formats: dvr-ms (Microsoft's old recorded TV format); mpg (standard MPEG); and ts (raw MPEG transport stream of the kind often produced by PVRs). When these three files are played back under Windows 7, the mpg and ts files play smoothly, but the dvr-ms file stutters. The last piece of data I have is that two other Windows 7 machines can play back dvr-ms files smoothly with no stuttering. One is a netbook, with less grunt than the media centre. So there must be something specific about my Media Center machine that's causing the problem. Does anyone have any idea where I can look now? I don't know much about AV software, codecs, filter graphs etc. but I suspect that's where the problem lies. Rendering the video isn't the problem, but extracting the streams is. How would I go about diagnosing the problem? Edited to add: I just used the GraphStudio tool to look at the filter graph on the offending PC. The filter graph it uses by default for dvr-ms looks identical to the other machines, and, interestingly, when I play the files using GraphStudio they run smoothly. Under Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center they stutter. I'd like to see the filter graph for WMP but GraphStudio won't show it. It looks like WMP and WMC are using a different decoding path to GraphStudio. Edited again to add: Today I purchased a new HDTV. The same Media Center driving the TV at 1080p is now playing back the old Recorded TV files smoothly, without stuttering. So whatever the cause of the original problem, using a different resolution seems to have removed the problem. It might also explain why nobody else has had this problem. I doubt many people use Media Centre with a 14in portable TV.

• Disk performance below expectations

  this is a follow-up to a previous question that I asked (Two servers with inconsistent disk speed). I have a PowerEdge R510 server with a PERC H700 integrated RAID controller (call this Server B) that was built using eight disks with 3Gb/s bandwidth that I was comparing with an almost identical server (call this Server A) that was built using four disks with 6Gb/s bandwidth. Server A had much better I/O rates than Server B. Once I discovered the difference with the disks, I had Server A rebuilt with faster 6Gbps disks. Unfortunately this resulted in no increase in the performance of the disks. Expecting that there must be some other configuration difference between the servers, we took the 6Gbps disks out of Server A and put them in Server B. This also resulted in no increase in the performance of the disks. We now have two identical servers built, with the exception that one is built with six 6Gbps disks and the other with eight 3Gbps disks, and the I/O rates of the disks is pretty much identical. This suggests that there is some bottleneck other than the disks, but I cannot understand how Server B originally had better I/O that has subsequently been 'lost'. Comparative I/O information below, as measured by SQLIO. The same parameters were used for each test. It's not the actual numbers that are significant but rather the variations between systems. In each case D: is a 2 disk RAID 1 volume, and E: is a 4 disk RAID 10 volume (apart from the original Server A, where E: was a 2 disk RAID 0 volume). • JNDI Datasource Problem on Tomcat 6, Hibernate

  I am using Tomcat 6 as application server, Struts-Hibernate and MyEclipse 6.0. My application uses JDBC driver but I should modify it to use JNDI Datasource. I followed steps as described in tomcat 6.0 howto tutorial. • What is a good method to solve cabal install problems?

  I've used the cabal package manager for Haskell programs to install libraries and new projects that I've cloned from some repositories. More often than not, I keep running into problems. Most projects make installing them seem super easy, but in my case that's not always true - sometimes they are very hard to get running. Some are so hard, in fact, that I've lost interest in the project solely because of not being able to install it. So instead of complaining, I'd like to ask what I should do to better this situation. I'd like to use my most recent problem as an example. I'm interested in trying out the Gitit project. It's a promising looking personal wiki that runs on various version control systems. So here's what I've done: Clone from Github run cabal install in the project directory like I'm told on the project install page: mika@eka:~/git/gitit$ ls BLUETRIP-LICENSE CHANGES HCAR-gitit.tex LICENSE Network README.markdown RELANN-0.6.1 Setup.lhs TANGOICONS YUI-LICENSE data expireGititCache.hs gitit.cabal gitit.hs plugins mika@eka:~/git/gitit$ cabal install Resolving dependencies... cabal: cannot configure happstack-server-7.0.7. • The server rejected the session-establishment request: WCF hosted on IIS

  Background: I'm working on a project where we have about a dozen distinct WCF services implemented in an IIS application, communicating over net.tcp on the default port (808), using the Microsoft Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service. I recently added a self-test method to the base class of each of these services so that I could remotely hit the service and get back a status string verifying that it was in operation. We implement this app in a ladder of environments - Development, QA, UAT, and finally production. My problem: My test program, which instantiates a connection to each service in turn and invokes the self-test method, works fine on all the environments below production. We recently moved the app to production, and I'm getting a weird error that I can't explain: On the first of the services that I hit, I get back an exception: "The server at [URL] rejected the session-establishment request". All the other services respond fine. I initially thought there was something wrong with the particular service that was failing, but I tried rearranging the list of services into a different order, and it SEEMS to always be the first service that I hit that fails. (I say SEEMS because it think once in the early iterations of testing, I saw it happen on the second service that it hit. But I haven't been able to reproduce that.) I've looked at application startup delays, and that doesn't seem to be the problem, because I can come back and run the test again as soon as it finishes - a delay of only a minute or two - and get the same error. Also, in the lower level environments, there is a start up delay of probably 30 seconds to a minute, but the result still comes back as expected. I've tried accessing the services over http from INetManager, and I get intermittent failures on all the services - a particular service will return a yellow screen of death on on invocation, then come up with the expected link to the WSDL on the next one seconds later. I'm completely at a loss to explain this behavior, or how to resolve it. I've googled the error message, and not found anything helpful. It may be a configuration issue - the production servers are newly provisioned VM's, and we may not have the config exactly right (whereas all the lower level environments have been running this and other similar apps for some time), but I have not idea what to look for. I've looked at the properties of the app pool that the app is running on and compared it to the lower level environments without finding any differences. If somebody can point me in the right direction, you would have my undying gratitude.

  This is actually a question from an exam, but I believe it could help others troubleshooting a similar situation. In a system, an e-mail needs to be sent to a certain mailbox. The following Java code, which is part of a larger system, was developed for that. • SQL Server 2008 R2 upgrade fails on upgrade rule check

  I'm trying to upgrade an evaluation instance of SQL Server 2008 to a fully licensed instance of SQL Server 2008 R2. I made it most of the way through the installer, but I'm getting stopped at the Upgrade Rules page - the SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check is failing. The specific error I get: Rule "SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check" failed. The current instance of the SQL Server Analysis Services service cannot be upgraded because the Analysis Services service is disabled or not online. Please start the service and then run the upgrade rules check again. Simple enough - just need to start the service. Here's where it gets troublesome. When I open Services and go to start the SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service, it provides me the following message: The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. Trying from the command line as Administrator yields: PS C:\Windows\System32 net start MSSQLServerOLAPService The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting... The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service could not be started. The service did not report an error. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534. I've tried changing the logon setting of this service to Administrator, a user with admin privileges, and both the Local System and Network Service accounts - nothing works. In addition, when I look at the service through the SQL Server Configuration Manager (also run as Administrator), attempting to change the logon setting for the service results in the message: The server threw an exception. [0x80010105] I have no need for analysis services themselves - all I need is for this one service to be running long enough to do the R2 upgrade, then it can shut down again. Any thoughts on how to get the Analysis Services service running? Update: Checking the event log, I found an error logged to the Application log from the MSSQLServerOLAPService. It has event ID 0, task category (289), and says: The service cannot be started: XML parsing failed at line 1, column 4: Unrecognized input signature.

• Windows 7 playback of dvr-Microsoft files stutters

  I've just had to install Windows 7 on my Media Center machine because my Vista installation had a faulty drive. I've got the latest drivers that I can find - Intel 945GM integrated Graphics, Realtek audio drivers. Things are working OK with one exception. Playback of old recordings, from dvr-Microsoft format files, is choppy. The picture freezes for a fraction of a second, then quickly catches up. The sound is uninterrupted and doesn't pause. These freezes happen once every 5 seconds or so. It's very regular. Playback of Live TV from the digital tuner is perfectly smooth. DVD playback is perfectly smooth. As an experiment, I used the MPEG editing package VideoReDo to create a small test file in three different formats. This program takes the raw MPEG streams and repackages them into the desired container. I took the same clip and created three files in three formats: dvr-Microsoft (Microsoft's old recorded TV format); mpg (standard MPEG); and ts (raw MPEG transport stream of the kind often produced by PVRs). When these three files are played back under Windows 7, the mpg and ts files play smoothly, but the dvr-Microsoft file stutters. The last piece of data I have is that two other Windows 7 machines can play back dvr-Microsoft files smoothly with no stuttering. One is a netbook, with less grunt than the media centre. So there must be something specific about my Media Center machine that's causing the problem. Does anyone have any idea where I can look now? I don't know much about AV software, codecs, filter graphs etc. but I suspect that's where the problem lies. Rendering the video isn't the problem, but extracting the streams is. How would I go about diagnosing the problem? Edited to add: I just used the GraphStudio tool to look at the filter graph on the offending PC. The filter graph it uses by default for dvr-Microsoft looks identical to the other machines, and, interestingly, when I play the files using GraphStudio they run smoothly. Under Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center they stutter. I'd like to see the filter graph for Windows Media Player but GraphStudio won't show it. It looks like Windows Media Player and WMC are using a different decoding path to GraphStudio. Edited again to add: Today I purchased a new HDTV. The same Media Center driving the TV at 1080p is now playing back the old Recorded TV files smoothly, without stuttering. So whatever the cause of the original problem, using a different resolution seems to have removed the problem. It might also explain why nobody else has had this problem. I doubt many people use Media Centre with a 14in portable TV.

• Unusual Apache->Tomcat caching issue.

  Right now, I have an Apache setup sitting in front of Tomcat to handle caching. This setup has been given to an external service to manage, and since the transition, I've noticed odd behavior. Specifically, when I request a swf file from the web server, I hit the Apache cache (good), but occasionally I'll receive a truncated file. Once I receive this truncated file, the cache will NOT refresh until I manually delete the cache and let the swf pull down from tomcat again. The external service claims that the configuration is fine, but I don't see any way this could be happening aside from improper configuration. Now, there are two apache and two tomcat servers under a load balancer, and occasionally one apache cache will break while another does not (leading to 50% of all requests getting bad, truncated data). Where should I start looking to debug this issue? What could POSSIBLY be causing this odd behavior?   I have found that my server's filesystem is continuously entering read-only mode. There have been some issues with the raid1 array, but I have removed the bad disk from the array. However, it is still physically plugged into the system because I haven't had a chance to go over to the datacentre, I suspect udev and the system kernel is still picking up the bad disk and throwing errors. When this happens, my system becomes non-operational which kind of defeats the purpose of having a raid1. Note, ata1 is the bad disk (I think ata1 corresponds to /dev/sda because they are both first in line). Under mdadm, /dev/sda1,2 is no longer being used, but I can't prevent the system kernel from continuing to query that disk when I am no longer using it and throwing these errors. Is there a way to prevent my filesystem from automatically going into read-only mode? Furthermore, is it safe to do so? Thanks in advance. My router forwards port 53 TCP and UDP from outside IP (router WAN) to this server. For the external clients everything works fine. In order to organize the internal view, I decided to add the exception to /etc/dnsmasq.conf server=/mydomain1.com/192.168.1.1 server=/mydomain2.com/192.168.1.1 server=/mydomain3.com/192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1 - IP address of the NS server) According to dnsmasq manstrong text: More specific domains take precendence over less specific domains, so: --server=/google.com/1.2.3.4 --server=/www.google.com/2.3.4.5 will send queries for *.google.com to 1.2.3.4, except *www.google.com, which will go to 2.3.4.5 this domain name with all the sub-domains is supposed to be forward to my NS server. • Postfix: How to apply header_checks only for specific Domains?

  Basically what I want to do is rewriting the From: Header, using header_checks, but only if the mail goes to a certain domain. The problem with header_check is, that I can't check for a combination of To: and From: Headers. Now I was wondering if it was possible to use the header_checks in combination with smtpd_restriction_classes or something similar. I've found a lot information about header_checks and multiple header fields, when searching the net. All of them basically telling me, that one can't combine two header for checking. But I didn't find any information if it was possible to only do a header check if a condition (eg. mail goes to example.com) was met. Edit: While doing some more Research I've found the following article which suggests to add a Service in postfix master.cf, use a transportmap to pass mails for the Domain to that service and have a separate header_check defined with -o. The thing is that I can't get it to work... What I did so far is adding the Service to the master.cf: example unix - - n - - smtpd -o header_checks=regexp:/etc/postfix/check_headers_example Adding the followin Line to the transportmap: example.com example: Last but not least I have two regexp-files for header checks, one for the newly added service, and one to redirect answers to the rewritten domain. check_headers_example: /From:(.*)@mydomain.ain>(.*)/ REPLACE From:[email protected]>$2 Obviously if someone answers, the mail would go to nirvana, so I have the following check_headers defined in the main postfix process: /To:(.*)<(.*)@mydomain.example.com>(.*)/ REDIRECT [email protected]$2 Somehow the Transport is ignored. Any help is appreciated. Edit 2: I'm still stuck... I did try the following: smtpd_restriction_classes = header_rewrite header_rewrite = regexp:/etc/postfix/rewrite_headers_domain smtpd_recipient_restrictions = (some checks) check_recipient_access hash:/etc/postfix/rewrite_table, (more checks) In the rewrite_table the following entries exist: /From:(.*)@mydomain.ain>(.*)/ REPLACE From:[email protected]>$2 All it gets me is a NOQUEUE: reject: 451 4.3.5 Server configuration error. I couldn't find any resources on how you would do that but some people saying it wasn't possible. Edit 3: The reason I asked this question was, that we have a customer (lets say customer.com) who uses some aliases that will forward mail to a domain, let's say example.com. The mailserver at example.com does not accept any mail from an external server that come from a sender @example.com. So all mails that are written from example.com to [email protected] will be rejected in the end. An exception on example.com's mailserver is not possible. We didn't really solve this problem, but will try to work around it by using lists (mailman) instead of aliases. This is not really nice though, nor a real solution. I'd appreciate all suggestions how this could be done in a proper way.

• Looking for Fiddler2 help. connection to gateway refused? Just got rid of a virus

  I use Fiddler2 for facebook game items, and it's been a great success. I accessed a website to download some dat files I needed. I think it was eshare, ziddu or megaupload, one of those. Anyway, even before the rar file had downloaded, I got this weird green shield in the bottom right hand corner of my computer. It said a Trojan was trying to access my computer, or something to that extent. It prompted me to click the shield to begin anti-virus scanning. It turns out this rogue program is called Antivirus System Pro and is pretty hard to get rid of. After discovering the rogue program, I tried using Fiddler and got the following error: [Fiddler] Connection to Gateway failed.Exception Text: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:5555 I ended up purchasing SpyDoctor + Antivirus, which I'm told is designed specifically for getting rid of these types of programs. Anyway, I did a quick-scan last night with spydoctor and malware bytes. Malware picked up 2 files, and Spydoctor found 4. Most were insignificant, but it did find a worm called Worm.Alcra.F, which was labeled high-priority. I don’t know if that’s the Anti-Virus Pro or not, but SpyDoctor said it got rid of all of those successfully. I tried to run Fiddler again before leaving home, but was still getting the "gateway failed" error. Im using the newest version of firefox. When I initially set up the Fiddler 2.2.8.6, I couldn’t get it to run at first, so I found this faq on the internet that said I needed to go through ToolsOptionsSettings and set up an HTTP Proxy to 127.0.0.1 and my Port to 8888. Once I set that up and downloaded this fiddler helper as a firefox add-on, it worked fine. When I turn on fiddler, it automatically takes my proxy setting from no proxy (default) to the 127.0.0.1 with Port 8888 set up. It worked fine until my computer detected this virus. Anyway, hopefully I've given you sufficient information to offer me your best advice here. Like I said, Spydoctor says the bad stuff is gone, so maybe the rogue program made some type of change in my fiddler that I could just reset or uncheck or something like that? Or will I need to completely remove fiddler and those dat files and rar files I downloaded? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

• Jetty interprets JETTY_ARGS as file name

  I'm running Jetty (version "null 6.1.22") on Ubuntu 10.04. It's running fine until I need JSP support. According to several blog posts I need to set the JETTY_ARGS to OPTIONS=Server,jsp. However, if I put this into /etc/default/jetty: JETTY_ARGS=OPTIONS=Server,jsp and restart Jetty via /etc/init.d/jetty stop && /etc/init.d/jetty start, it reports success, but does not accept connections.
