• shared hosting: ssl domain receives all server's ssl requests, google gets it wrong

  This website is hosted on a shared server. I've recently had my hosting provider secure our website using SSL (https://domain.com instead of http://domain.com). Ever since then, all https requests sent to the server are redirected to my website. https://otherdomain.com leads to a warning, then, if you continue, to my website. Ok, my fault, i should have known SSL means 1 IP, otherwise, this thing can happen. But... Google Search results for my website's target keywords is now displaying these websites above my own, even though they have nothing even remotely related to the target keywords! already done: provide canonical url in the html page. told the problem to the server manager, who tells me it's normal but he'll look for a solution. This was one week ago, no answer since. I have no idea why Google is providing these https urls: i thought someone would have to submit them, or have them inside an html page in order for Google to actually index dummy https domains, but i see no reason why someone would do that. Any suggestion on how to solve this situation? Golive is in one week and SEO looks really bad because of that.

• When I try to click and launch some of the links set to open in new window, it is being treated as a pop-up window [migrated]

  For the past few days, we are facing issue with the chrome browser behavior. This is related to opening links set to open in new tab/window. The details are as follow: I have a collection of links and each link points to different resource to be opened in a new tab/window. The code is as follow: <a class="cssClass" rid="1114931" href="http://www.domain.com/resources/abc.html" title="Link1" tabindex="4">Link 1</a> And there are few checks/filters over accessing the resources which have been implemented as onClick handler over the links. In case any of the validations fails, the onClick handler returns false and the default behavior of the link does not happens i.e. links does not get open. One of such (last) checks includes AJAX call in sync mode. In case all of the checks are passed and onClick handler returns true, sometimes the resource get opened in a new tab/window and sometimes it get opened as a pop-up (which should never). Tried to capture any pattern but could not succeed. Any solution or even helping in understanding behavior would be really appreciated.

• How can I do Ubuntu Lucid Desktop installation with HTTP preseed file and desktop installation CD?

  Installation media: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso I tried a lot of different boot parameters, but either the installer ignored the preseed configuration, or it boot itself directly as LiveCD. An example of the boot parameters I've tried: auto url=http://mydomain.com/path/preseed.cfg boot=casper only-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- If I remove only-ubiquity, it boots as a LiveCD. If I remove boot=casper, it won't boot. If I add vga=normal locale=en_US console-setup/layoutcode=us console-setup/ask_detect=false interface=auto, it still can't do automatic install. If I remove auto, it's the same. What am I missing? From the apache log of the server hosting preseed.cfg, I see that the installer has no problems fetching the preseed file. My preseed file is almost identical to the one at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt. Moreover, I have run debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg to ensure that the preseed file is correct. Any ideas?

• My old Conchango blog posts are currently not accessible

  Some of you reading this may be aware that I used to blog at http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson. That URL later changed to http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson after Conchango (my employer) got taken over by EMC. In my last post on that site: I stated that I had 676 blog posts on that site. Unfortunately, as of today, those 676 posts are inaccessible. If you try to get to http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson today you will see this: I am not the only one affected either; it seems that EMC have taken the same action for many blog sites of my old colleagues (e.g. http://consultingblogs.emc.com/merrickchaffer is also inaccessible). Early indications are that EMC have removed all blog posts by any former employees although that is yet to be confirmed.   A few of us former employees are endeavouring to get this situation rectified so watch this space. I am aware that many people in the SSIS community still refer to those old blog posts so please be aware that any attempt to access any of them will be futile for the foreseeable future. @Jamiet UPDATE: Looks like I managed to get through to the right person. its back http://consultingblogs.emc.com/jamiethomson/

• How do I install a CentOS 5.5 in Xenserver?

  When I try to install CentOS 5.5 in a new VM, I get an error that the installer is unable to retrieve stage2.img. I have verified the URL and I am able to download this file from a web browser. I suspect it is a networking/routing issue, but I can't figure out what is wrong. This is a new install of XenServer 5.6 on a new server. This server is remote, so I don't have physical access to the box - only ssh access. Can anyone give me some tips on what might be wrong here? Do I need to do something special to get a net install to work? For what its worth, I see the same error trying to install Debian Woody using a similar process. Thanks.

• Getting Query Parameters in Javascript

  I find myself needing to get query parameters that are passed into a web app on the URL quite often. At first I wrote a function that creates an associative array (aka object) with all of the parameters as keys and returns it. But then I was looking at the revealing module pattern, a nice javascript design pattern designed to hide private functions, and came up with a way to do this without even calling a function. What I came up with was this nice little object that automatically initializes itself into the same associative array that the function call did previously. // Creates associative array (object) of query params var QueryParameters = (function() {     var result = {};     if (window.location.search)     {         // split up the query string and store in an associative array         var params = window.location.search.slice(1).split("&");         for (var i = 0; i < params.length; i++)         {             var tmp = params[i].split("=");             result[tmp[0]] = unescape(tmp[1]);         }     }     return result; }()); Now all you have to do to get the query parameters is just reference them from the QueryParameters object. • mod_status: 403 Forbidden

  I have configured mod_status like this in my Apache 2 config file: <Location /server-status> SetHandler server-status Order Deny,Allow </Location> I also tried: Order Deny,Allow allow from all And: Order Allow,Deny allow from all And: Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Allow from 145.xxx.xx.xx And of course I restarted Apache after each configuration change. I tried the configurations above in my main config file and under a VirtualHost directive. When I place the configuration under VirtualHost or in a NameVirtualHost block I get a 404 instead of 403. But I get only get 403 Forbidden when I visit example.com/server-status/ I don't use an .htaccess file. It works now! I placed the server-status code right above the definitions of the virtual hosts. I didn't test the right configuration on the right virtual host. On the virtual host without htaccess files it works, on virtual hosts with an app installed I get 404 because of url rewrites in the htaccess file.

• Variable parsing with Bash and wget

  I'm attempting to use wget in a simple bash script to grab a jpeg image from an Axis camera. This script outputs a file named JPEGOUT, instead of the desired output, which should be a timestamp jpeg (ex: 201209292040.jpg) . Changing the variable in the wget statement from JPEGOUT to $JPEGOUT makes wget fail with "wget: missing URL" error. The weird thing is wget parses the $IP vairable correctly. No luck on the output file name. I've tried single quotes, double quotes, parenthesis: all to no luck. Here's the script !/bin/bash IP=$1 JPEGOUT= date +%Y%m%d%H%M.jpg wget -O JPEGOUT http://$IP/axis-cgi/jpg/image.cgi?resolution=640x480&compression=25 Any ideas on how to get the output file name to parse correctly?

• What's the value of a Facebook fan?

  In his blog posting titled "Why Each Facebook Fan Is Worth $2,000 to J. Crew," Joe Skorupa lays out a simplistic calculation for assigning a value to social media efforts within Facebook. While I don't believe the metric, at least its a metric that can be applied consistently. Trying to explain the ROI to management to start a program, then benchmarking to show progress isn't straightforward at all. Social media isn't really mature enough to have hard-and-fast rules around valuation (yet). When I'm asked by retailers how to measure social media efforts, I usually fess-up and say I can't show an ROI but the investment is so low you might was well take a risk. Intuitively, it just seems like a good way to interact with consumers, and since your competition is doing it, you better do it as well. Vitrue, a social media management company, has calculated a fan as being worth $3.60 per year based on impressions generated in Facebook's news feed. That means a fan base of 1 million translates into at least $3.6 million in equivalent media over a year. Don't believe that number either? Fine, Vitrue now has a tool that let's you adjust the earned media value of a fan. Jump over to http://evaluator.vitrue.com/ and enter your brand's Facebook URL to get an assessment of the current value and potential value. For fun, I compared Abercrombie & Fitch (1,077,480 fans), Gap (567,772 fans), and Wet Seal (294,479 fans). The image below shows the results assuming the default $5 earned media value for a fan. The calculation is more complicated than just counting fans. It also accounts for postings and comments. Its possible for a brand with fewer fans to have a higher value based on frequency and relevancy of posts. The tool gathers data via the Social Graph API for the past 30 days of activity. I'm not sure this tool assigns the correct value either, but hey, its a great start.

• IE Kerberos failure on some machines with CNAME web server (with SPN for host's A record)

  It's fairly well known that IE doesn't like to do Kerberos against hosts that are registered in DNS as CNAMEs. What happens is that IE turns around and uses the underlying A record for the host for looking up the Service Principal Name (SPN). On a test network we are able to get Kerberos working by having the SPN registered for the A record of the host, so that Kerberos authentication happens successfully when accessing the web server via it's CNAME in the browser. Kerberos authentication works properly when directly accessing the web server with the A record host in the URL, but for various reasons that are beyond my control, it is desired to use the CNAME. On the production network, this same configuration fails though and I can't figure out why. Any thoughts? This is a java web application using the SPNEGO library - not IIS. Kerberos authentication is working properly in both the test and production networks (and has been confirmed to not fail back to NTLM), but the CNAME access only works in test.

  I don't know is this is the right place to post this questions, but I have an excel hyperlink problem. Here's the thing. I click on let's say "A1", copy the link in it (http://www.godaddy.com/domains/searchresults.aspx?ci=54814), right click on hyperlink and copy that SAME URL as the link (if it is not automatically detected and changed). When I go to click on it, I am readirected to http://www.godaddy.com/domains/search.aspx?ci=53972. If I copy and paste the link directly into the browser, it works fine.   Before getting started with the JMS Adapter, we must configure the connection factories/JMS queues on the WLS admin console. In particular, we will be required to follow these stepsCreate a connection factory. In our case, we will create a "XA Connection Factory". This step is mandatory if you need your JMS queues to participate in a global transaction. Create the WLS JMS QueuesCreating the connection factory:1) Login to the WLS Admin console. On my setup, the url looks like "http://localhost:7001/console".2) Select Services -> Messaging -> JMS Modules -> SOAJMSModule as shown below. We can also create a new JMS Module, but, I took the easier way out by selecting the SOAJMSModule. 3) Click on "New" as shown in order to create the Connection factory.4) Select "Connection Factory" radio button and click "Next".5) Enter the Connection Factory properties as shown and click on "Finish".6) Target the connection factory to your managed server and click on "Finish". 7) Now, go back and select the Connection Factory that you've just created (see Step 2 above) . Now, Microsoft has made that job easier with their new Office Add on. With it you can save directly into Moodle.   Here are the instructions on how to use. Open your Office Word in this example and then select Save to Moodle (Notice you can also open files that you have stored in moodle make changes and then save back to moodle.   So I thought I would  change the name of my machine so that the other devs can find the TFS server easily. TFS 2005 would use the cool cmd line util tfsadminutil.....alas he is now gone HERE Are the steps to complete Edit the web.config and is usually located on default install C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Application Tier\Web Services\web.config <add key="applicationDatabase" value="Data Source=JUSTIN\SQLI01;Initial Catalog=Tfs_Configuration;Integrated Security=True;" /> Next step is to edit previous Solutions/Projects 1) Open the Solution file i.e ProductApp.sln 2) Edit the SccTeamFoundationServer URL under Global section i.e Change this to new name   If you have DB server on same machine ...you will need to go in and remove existing db user account assigned to the tfs DB Remove old [%machine_name%] value i.e Tuned_Dev_PC_12\Justin user from the above DBs No add the new Justin\Justin user account associated with the new machine name to the TFS & Reporing dbs ... dbo or the TFSADMIN & TFSEXEC roles either will do in this case. (or add both ) Now either ReApply user or add New account (remove old account i.e Tuned_Dev_PC_12\justin) If DB permisions are setup correctyly you will get a screen that looks like this   If it pauses or gets stuck you need to look back at the adding correct DB Perms to the i.e JUSTIN\Justin user account Also if your project is still complaining about old TFS name 1) Team\Connect new Team Foundation Server 2) Add\Remove TFS 3) Add New TFS Name  Once you have connected to the new TFS server Reload your project from TFS..this way it removes a lot of the bugs that hang around in the local project\solution This is similar to a VSS2005 and older fix Cheers ( eta about 60-90 mins so weigh up the the need vs payoff. ) Shutdown restart

  I buy a domain from GoDaddy. Let's call this domain as abc.com. I've a hosting account on web hosting A with abc.com as my primary domain. I created a sub-domain pic.abc.com and I wish it to be pointed to my new hosting account. This web hosting B also use abc.com as the primary domain. The main purpose of doing this because I only want to use web hosting B to host my pic.abc.com contents. That's all. Other content from *.abc.com and abc.com will be remain in web hosting A. How to do this? Note 1: I try to add pic.abc.com as an add-on domain in my web hosting B account. Unfortunately, I couldn't do that. Note 2: I also try to use URL forwarding method using DNS management service like DNS Social. It doesn't work. Note 3: I'm using WordPress on the pic.abc.com site. Both web hosting A and B running cPanel - Apache servers (shared hosting). Thanks in advance!

  I've got nginx configured as a front-end to a Python application running under gunicorn, but nginx is terminating connections after about 65k of data have been sent. For example, I've got a view which looks like this: def debug_big_file(request): return HttpResponse("x" * 500000) But when I access that URL through nginx, I only get 65283 bytes: $ curl https://example.com/debug/big-file | wc … curl: (18) transfer closed with outstanding read data remaining 0 1 65283 Note that everything works as expected when accessing gunicorn directly: $ curl http://localhost:1234/debug/big-file | wc … 0 1 500000 The relevant nginx config: location / { proxy_pass http://localhost:1234/; proxy_redirect off; proxy_headers_hash_bucket_size 96; } And nginx version 1.7.0 Some other facts: The number of bytes is consistent from request to request, but it varies based on the content (I first noticed it with a large PNG file, which was cut off after 65,372 bytes, not 65,283) 110k bytes are sent correctly (ie, "x" * 110000 returns all 110,000 bytes), but 120k bytes are not tcpdump suggests that nginx is sending a RST packet to gunicorn:

  We are a startup looking to migrate from Fogbugz/Kiln to a new issue tracker/code review system. We are very happy with Jira, especially the configurability, but we are undecided on a code review tool. We have been trialing Bitbucket, but it doesn't fit our workflow well. Here are the problems we have identified with BB: Comments can be hard to find: when commenting on code not visible in the diff when code that is commented on is later changed viewing the full file doesn't include comments (also doesn't show changes) Viewing comments on individual commits can be a pain We have the implementer merge the diff and close the issue, whereas pull requests are more suited to the open source model where someone with commit rights merges We would like to automate creation of the code review (either from Jira or a command line tool) No syntax highlighting Once the pull request exceeds a certain size, BB won't show the whole thing and you have to view individual commits Linking BB pull requests to Jira issues is a bit janky: we have a pull request URL field on Jira, but this doesn't work when there are changes in multiple repositories Does anyone have any good suggestion given the above? We are tight on budget, and Jira integration is a big plus. We also have multiple commits per issue, and would like to have the option of viewing individual commits in the review. It might also be worth noting that we have a separate reviewer and tester for each issue.

• Welcome files are not loaded! Need help with Railo, mappings and J2EE configuration!

  I have installed a J2EE Server (tried it with Glassfish3, Tomcat6 and Resin4) on Win7 64bit and deployed Railo3.1. I have then added a virtual host to the J2EE server, i.e. Resin: <host host-name="railo"> C:/resin/webapps/railo In the Railo Admin i have added this mapping: Virtual Physical / C:/webapps/ When i access http://railo:8080/ my index.cfm welcome file in C:/webapps/ is loaded (index.cfm is definded in Railos web.xml). When i try to access http://railo:8080/test which contains the same index.cfm i get an 500 Servlet Exception java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\webapps\test (access denied) (on all J2EE Servers i tried so far). http://railo:8080/test/index.cfm works fine. I already tried to add index.cfm to Resins welcome-file-list in app-default.xml to no avail. I want to be able to access deployed apps without this url: http://localhost:8080/app/ Instead i want to use this: http://app:8080/
