• 2012 Exadata & Manageability Partner Communities EMEA Forum - Istanbul, Turkey

  On March 14-15th we have celebrated our 2012 Exadata & Manageability Partner Communities EMEA Forum, in Istanbul, Turkey. It has been an intense two days, packed with great content and a lot of networking. Organizing the Manageability and the Exadata Partner Forums jointly has allowed participants to benefit from the content of both topcis, which have strong connections as the journey to cloud architectures request that the cloud infrastructures are built on the best building blocks and are managed automatically and in a self-service way. During the sessions we have listened to two thought-leaders in our industry, Ron Tolido, from Capgemini, and Julian Dontcheff, from Accenture. We thank our Exadata partners -ISE (Germany), Inserve (Sweden), Fors (Russia), Linkplus (Turkey) and Sogeti, for sharing with the community their experiences in selling and implementing Exadata and Manageability projects. • Eclipse Java Code Formatter in NetBeans Plugin Manager

  Great news for Eclipse refugees everywhere. Benno Markiewicz forked the Eclipse formatter plugin that I blogged about sometime ago (here and here)... and he fixed many bugs, while also adding new features. It's a handy plugin when you're (a) switching from Eclipse to NetBeans and want to continue using your old formatting rules and (b) working in a polyglot IDE team, i.e., now the formatting rules defined in Eclipse can be imported into NetBeans IDE and everyone will happily be able to conform to the same set of formatting standards. And now you can get it directly from Tools | Plugins in NetBeans IDE 7.4: News from Benno on the plugin, received from him today: The plugin is verified by the NetBeans community and available in the Plugin Manager in NetBeans IDE 7.4 (as shown above) and also at the NetBeans Plugin Portal here, where you can also read quite some info about the plugin:  http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/50877/eclipse-code-formatter-for-java The issue with empty undo buffer was solved with the help of junichi11: https://github.com/markiewb/eclipsecodeformatter_for_netbeans/issues/18 The issue with the lost breakpoints remains unsolved and there was no further feedback. • SQL Server Express Profiler

  During a recent project, while waiting for our Development Database to be provisioned on the clients corporate SQL Server Environment (these things can sometimes take weeks or months to be setup), we began our initial development against a local instance on SQL Server Express, just as an interim measure until the Development database was live.  This was going just fine, until we found that we needed to do some profiling to understand a problem we were having with the performance of our ORM generated Data Access Layer.  The full version of SQL Server Management Studio includes a profiler, that we could use to help with this kind of problem, however the Express version does not, so I was really pleased to find that there is a freely available Profiler for SQL Server Express imaginatively titled ‘SQL Server Express Profiler’, and it worked great for us.  http://sites.google.com/site/sqlprofiler/

• Solved: Chrome v18, self signed certs and &ldquo;signed using a weak signature algorithm&rdquo;

  So chrome has just updated itself automatically and you are now running v18 – great. Or is it… If like me, you are someone that are running sites using a self-signed SSL Certificate (i.e. when running a site on a developer machine) you may come across the following lovely message; Fear not, this is likely as a result of you following instructions you found on the apache openssl site which results in a self signed cert using the MD5 signature hashing algorithm. Using OpenSSL The simple fix is to generate a new certificate specifying to use the SHA512 signature hashing algorithm, like so; openssl req -new -x509 -sha512 -nodes -out server.crt -keyout server.key Simples! Now, you should be able to confirm the signature algorithm used is sha512 by looking at the details tab of certificate Notes If you change your certificate, be sure to reapply any private key permissions you require – such as allowing access to the application pool user.

• Customizing the Test Status on the TFS 2010 SSRS Stories Overview Report

  This post shows how to customize the SQL query used by the Team Foundation Server 2010 SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) Stories Overview Report. The objective is to show test status for the current version while including user story status of the current and prior versions.  Why? Because we don’t copy completed user stories into the next release. We only want one instance of a user story for the product because we believe copies can get out of sync when they are supposed to be the same. In the example below, work items for the current version are on the area path root and prior versions are not on the area path root. However, you can use area path or iteration path criteria in the query as suits your needs. In any case, here’s how you do it: 1. Download a copy of the report RDL file as a backup 2. Open the report by clicking the edit down arrow and selecting “Edit in Report Builder” 3. Right click on the dsOverview Dataset and select Dataset Properties 4. • Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

  Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime. • How to capture a Header or Trailer Count Value in a Flat File and Assign to a Variable

  Recently I had several questions concerning how to process files that carry a header and trailer in them. Typically those files are a product of data extract from non Microsoft products e.g. Oracle database encompassing various tables data where every row starts with an identifier. For example such a file data record could look like: HDR,INTF_01,OUT,TEST,3/9/2011 11:23 B1,121156789,DATA TEST DATA,2011-03-09 10:00:00,Y,TEST 18 10:00:44,2011-07-18 10:00:44,Y B2,TEST DATA,2011-03-18 10:00:44,Y B3,LEG 1 TEST DATA,TRAN TEST,N B4,LEG 2 TEST DATA,TRAN TEST,Y FTR,4,TEST END,3/9/2011 11:27 A developer is normally able to break the records using a Conditional Split Transformation component by employing an expression similar to Output1 -- SUBSTRING(Output1,1,2) == "B1" and so on, but often a verification is required after this step to check if the number of data records read corresponds to the number specified in the trailer record of the file. This portion sometimes stumbles some people so I decided to share what I came up with. As an aside, I want to mention that the approach I use is slightly more portable than some others I saw because I use a separate DFT that can be copied and pasted into a new SSIS package designer surface or re-used within the same package again and it can survive several trailer/footer records (!). See how a ready DFT can look: The first step is to create a Flat File Connection Manager and make sure you get the row split into columns like this: After you are done with the Flat File connection, move onto adding an aggregate which is in use to simply assign a value to a variable (here the aggregate is used to handle the possibility of multiple footers/headers): The next step is adding a Script Transformation as destination that requires very little coding. First, some variable setup: and finally the code: As you can see it is important to place your code into the appropriate routine in the script, otherwise the end result may not be as expected. As the last step you would use the regular Script Component to compare the variable value obtained from the DFT above to a package variable value obtained say via a Row Count component to determine if the file being processed has the right number of rows.

• Fix a jQuery/HTML5 dynamic content issue by upgrading jQuery

  The default NuGet template for MVC3 pushes down jQuery 1.5.1.  You can upgrade to a new version (1.7.1 is current when this is written) to avoid a problem with the creation of “unknown” HTML5 tags in IE6-8: Take this sample HTML page using HTML5Shiv to provide support for new HTML5 tags in IE6 – IE8.  The page has a number of <article> tags that are backwards compatible in Internet Explorer 6-8 thanks to the HTML5Shiv. After the article elements there is a jQuery 1.5.1 script tag, and a ready() event handler that appends a footer element with a copyright to each of the article tags.  This appears correctly in IE9, but in older IE browsers the unknown tag problem reappears for the dynamic <footer> elements, even though we have the HTML5Shiv at the top of the page.  The copyright text sits outside of the two separate footer tags. To solve the issue upgrade your jQuery files to an up-to-date version.  For instance in Visual Studio 2010: In the Solution Explorer right click on References and choose Manage NuGet Packages. In the Manage NuGet Packages window select the jQuery item on the middle of the page and click the “Upgrade” button. You may need to upgrade your script src references to point at the new version. Using the updated jQuery library the incorrect tags should disappear and styles should work properly:   You can find more information about the issue on the jQuery Bug Tracker site.

• Entity Framework: Connecting to a mdf user database file via localDB during script execution

  Problem If you run the “Generate database from model” wizard and execute the generated script the destination database could be the wrong one (for instance master of the SQL Server). Solution To use an own mdf attachable user database some connection information must specified during script execution. Execute your script opens the dialog “Connect to Server”. Press “Options” and go to the second tab “Connection Properties”. Select “Browse server” in the “Connect to database” dropdown box: Confirm the information dialog with “Yes”. In the following dialog you could choose your user database. Now the schema is created in the user database.
