  • How can you Add Value to your Mobile Apps?

    - by Carlos Chang
Author: Craig Mikus, Sr. Director, Enterprise Mobile Solutions Seems like every customer is either building or planning to build mobile apps, especially customer facing apps. Why? Inevitably, all companies want to improve the customer experience through more quality interactions that drive customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, new revenue streams, and even improve the way they service their customers. What better way than mobile apps? Right? But how can customers add more value to these mobile apps to drive more business benefit? Look closely, the answer just might be right in front of you. Still need another clue? What’s the first 4 letters of mobile – mo-bi? Or pronounced differently, More BI. That’s right – add more business intelligence to your overall mobile strategy. In today’s customer centric world where customer interactions and personalization are critical, it’s important to leverage a BI strategy that complements and feeds into your mobile strategy. For example, I was recently talking to a customer that was implementing a data warehouse project focused customer analytics. Their goal was to understand who are their best customers and why, develop customer profiles, identify customer trends & patterns, identify cross sell opportunities, and much more. The company then wanted to feed this information to marketing for targeted campaigns and programs. As we continued to talk, I asked my contact if they had plans to feed this information into their customer facing mobile apps to personalize the apps, target their interactions, and hopefully drive customer loyalty and new revenue streams? Two minutes later, my contact was calling his mobile development teams. So my advice to everyone, as you establish your enterprise mobile strategy and goals, remember that “mo-BI” is a critical component to add value to your mobile apps! So make sure you have “mo BI” in your mobile strategy. As I come to think of it, did you ever notice that Big Data also starts with BI?

  • Technology Choice for a Client Application [on hold]

    - by AK_
Not sure this is the right place to ask... I'm involved in the development of a new system, and now we are passing the demos stage. We need to build a proper client application. The platform we care most about is Windows, for now at least, but we would love to support other platforms, as long as it's free :-). Or at least very cheap. We anticipate two kinds of users: Occasional, coming mostly from the web. Professional, who would probably require more features, and better performance, and probably would prefer to see a native client. Our server exposes two APIs: A SOAP API, WCF behind the scenes, that supports 100% of the functionality. A small and very fast UDP + Binary API, that duplicates some of the functionality and is intended for the sake of performance for certain real-time scenarios. Our team is mostly proficient in .Net, C#, C++ development, and rather familiar with Web development (HTML, JavaScript). We are probably intending to develop two clients (for both user profiles), a web app, and a native app. Architecturally, we would like to have as many common components as possible. We would like to have several layers: Communication, Client Model, Client Logic, shared by both of the clients. We would also like to be able to add features to both clients when only the actual UI is a dual cost, and the rest is shared. We are looking at several technologies: WPF + Silverlight, Pure HTML, Flash / Flex (AIR?), Java (JavaFx?), and we are considering poking at WinRT(or whatever the proper name is). The question is which technology would you recommend and why? And which advantages or disadvantages will it have regarding our requirements?

  • How to Setup an RSS Feed using Feedburner?

    - by Derick K.
I've searched Google, but only found information on how to setup a feedburner for wordpress or other blogging services. I've also searched stackoverflow, but not found the right information. I'm creating a website, for which I want to have an RSS. Feedburner seems to be a good, free option - so I'd like to use that. When I go to feedburner, using my google account, it says the website I want to claim is invalid. And it's not clear how to make it valid. I also have no experience with RSS (and really websites in general), so I'm not sure where to go from here. What are the steps I need to take, starting from scratch, to add an RSS feed (with feedburner) to a website?

  • How to handle multiple openIDs for the same user

    - by Sinan
For my site I am using a login system much like the one on SO. A user can login with his Facebook, Google (Gmail openID), Twitter account. This question is not about specific oAuth or openID implementations. The question is how to know if the same user logins with different providers. Let me give an example: Bobo comes to site logins to site by clicking on "Login with Facebook". Because this is his first visit we create an account for him. Later Bobo comes to the site. This time he clicks on "Login with Google". So how do I know if this is the same person so I can add this provider to his account instead of creating a new (and duplicate) account. Can I trust solely on email? What is the best way to handle this. How does SO do it? Any ideas?

  • Python sys.argv lists and indexes

    - by Fred Gerbig
In the below code I understand that sys.argv uses lists, however I am not clear on how the index's are used here. def main(): if len(sys.argv) >= 2: name = sys.argv[1] else: name = 'World' print 'Hello', name if __name__ == '__main__': main() If I change name = sys.argv[1] to name = sys.argv[0] and type something for an argument it returns: Hello C:\Documents and Settings\fred\My Documents\Downloads\google-python-exercises \google-python-exercises\hello.py Which kind of make sense. Can someone explain how the 2 is used here: if len(sys.argv) >= 2: And how the 1 is used here: name = sys.argv[1]

  • How to decide which colors to use that look most similar across most screens/monitors?

    - by Lyon
Hi, I'm baffled. I'm trying to find suitable colors for a logo that would look similar across most monitors/screens. I know it's near impossible, but how does one end up with the color palette that new Google logo and Facebook "blue" uses for example? I've a monitor that has been calibrated, and a few laptop screens that have default settings. Yet both the Google logo and facebook's look similar (although they aren't using colors restricted to the web safe 216 palette. Any ideas? thoughts? Thanks

  • Javascript substrings multiline replace by RegExp

    - by Radek Šimko
Hi, I'm having some troubles with matching a regular expression in multi-line string. <script> var str="Welcome to Google!\n"; str = str + "We are proud to announce that Microsoft has \n"; str = str + "one of the worst Web Developers sites in the world."; document.write(str.replace(/.*(microsoft).*/gmi, "$1")); </script> http://jsbin.com/osoli3/3/edit As you may see on the link above, the output of the code looks like this: Welcome to Google! Microsoft one of the worst Web Developers sites in the world. Which means, that the replace() method goes line by line and if there's no match in that line, it returns just the whole line... Even if it has the "m" (multiline) modifier...

  • Expression Studio 4 Premium & SketchFlow question; WTH

    - by Refracted Paladin
Through work I have an Visual Studio Premium with MSDN subscription that I love. However, my biggest disappointment of the last 12 months was discovering that our 2nd from the top level subscription was not enough to get me Sketchflow! This is, most decidedly, NOT SHINY, and I am borderline distraught! What are my options? Upgrading to an Ultimate subscription for Sketchflow is out of the question. Am I forced, then, to stay with Blend 3 or Purchase Blend 4 seperately? If this is not a question I should ask here please inform and I'll delete. I just tend to default to SO for all questions that Google can't answer and Google did not answer this one.

  • How does Microsoft Detours work and how do I use it to get a stack trace?

    - by Bruce
I am new to Microsoft Detours. I have installed it to trace the system calls a process makes. I run the following commands which I got from the web syelogd.exe /q C:\Users\xxx\Desktop\log.txt withdll.exe /d:traceapi.dll C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe I get the log file. The problem is I don't fully understand what is happening here. How does detours work? How does it trace the system calls? Also I don't know how to read the output in log.txt. Here is one line in log.txt 20101221060413329 2912 50.60: traceapi: 001 GetCurrentThreadId() Finally I want to get the stack trace of the process. How can I get that?

  • create own svn repository hosting

    - by netmajor
Hey, Since week I use ToirtoiseSVN and AnkhSVN and GoogleCode and sourceforge.net as my project hosting. For me it's frustrating to fill all this forms before create next project. So I start thinking about mu own repository hosting... Can I use simple file hosting etc. and install there software like use Google or SourceForge to have my own SVN Server ? My point is to have independent repository in internet without all this uselessly UI interface which give me Google and SF to administrate my version control. I don't want to take advantage of already exist hosting like GoogleCode etc - I want to be independent from them! ;) Or maybe it's other way to do my own repository hosting and FREE ;) Please don't tell me that I'm at mercy of commercial hosting... :/ p.s. If I wrote something wrong, sorry ;)

  • Is being a programmer a younger person's job?

    - by Saobi
After you get old, say past 30 or 40. Can you still keep up with the young coders from your company, those fresh out of school, who can code for 15+ hours on 10 cans of redbulls (most people in Google, Facebook, etc) ? And given the lightning speed with which today's programming frameworks and architectures evolve, can you keep up with the most up to date stuff and be as proficient at them as the next college grad? I know for jobs like unix/c/embedded programming, it might be that the older the better. But for programming jobs in say web development, social media, search engine technology, etc. Do you become less and less competitive career-wise versus youngsters? For example, most coders in Google and Facebook, I believe are under 25 years old. In other words, once you reach a certain age, would it be unwise to continue to be a coder, and is it better to try becoming a project manager or architect?

  • Map a domain to an MVC area

    - by Simon_Weaver
Anybody got any experience in mapping a domain to an MVC area? Here's our situation: Old system (still active but will soon redirect to new store): www.example.com - our main site where we send traffic store.example.com - our store site which is a completely separate site that is indexed in google New system: www.example.com - same site as before www.example.com/store - new store site - built in an ASP.NET MVC area Because store is a separate domain google gives it a separate entry in the search results. I'd like to keep this benefit in future but wondering whether or not there is a good way to map a domain (store.example.com) to the MVC area or if its just going to be more trouble than its worth. PS. I'm not trying to keep existing indexing - its a completely separate store so thats not possible. I just want to redirect to the corresponding page in the new store. I'm just trying not to lose the benefit of two domains for SEO purposes.

  • Unable To Get Sound Working to External Speaker on HP TouchSmart 320 on 11.04 or 11.10

    - by Schof
This is an HP TouchSmart 320, model number 320-1200m. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. Hardware information: root@hp320:/home/mpower# aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 root@hp320:~$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep Codec Codec: IDT 92HD91BXX Sound to headphone jack works properly, but sound to built-in speakers does not work. I have installed Windows, and with Windows 7 installed, all audio hardware works properly, so this isn't a hardware fault. I've looked at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto and have been unable to find my card in http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt . I have tried adding almost every conceivable model in the line "options snd-hda-intel model=MODEL" line I added to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. Update 2011-11-09 2:31 PM PST: I've gone to Control Center - Sound Preferences to attempt settings that make sound work. The "Hardware" tab shows one device: "Internal Audio 1 Output / 1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex." There are two output profiles listed in the selection box at the bottom of the tag: Analog Stereo Duplex and Analog Stereo Output. Neither cause sound to emit from the speakers. I've also run alsamixer on the command-line and ensured that everything is set to maximum and nothing is muted. Update 2011-11-09 5:15 PM PST: I've replicated the exact same symptoms in 11.10. Update 2011-11-10 11:31 AM PST: I've filed a bug in launchpad: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/888703

  • How can I parse a namespace using the SAX parser?

    - by Silvestri
Hello, Using a twitter search URL ie. http://search.twitter.com/search.rss?q=android returns CSS that has an item that looks like: <item> <title>@UberTwiter still waiting for @ubertwitter android app!!!</title> <link>http://twitter.com/meals69/statuses/21158076391</link> <description>still waiting for an app!!!</description> <pubDate>Sat, 14 Aug 2010 15:33:44 +0000</pubDate> <guid>http://twitter.com/meals69/statuses/21158076391</guid> <author>Some Twitter User</author> <media:content type="image/jpg" height="48" width="48" url="http://a1.twimg.com/profile_images/756343289/me2_normal.jpg"/> <google:image_link>http://a1.twimg.com/profile_images/756343289/me2_normal.jpg</google:image_link> <twitter:metadata> <twitter:result_type>recent</twitter:result_type> </twitter:metadata> </item> Pretty simple. My code parses out everything (title, link, description, pubDate, etc.) without any problems. However, I'm getting null on: <google:image_link> I'm using Java to parse the RSS feed. Do I have to handle compound localnames differently than I would a more simple localname? This is the bit of code that parses out Link, Description, pubDate, etc: @Override public void endElement(String uri, String localName, String name) throws SAXException { super.endElement(uri, localName, name); if (this.currentMessage != null){ if (localName.equalsIgnoreCase(TITLE)){ currentMessage.setTitle(builder.toString()); } else if (localName.equalsIgnoreCase(LINK)){ currentMessage.setLink(builder.toString()); } else if (localName.equalsIgnoreCase(DESCRIPTION)){ currentMessage.setDescription(builder.toString()); } else if (localName.equalsIgnoreCase(PUB_DATE)){ currentMessage.setDate(builder.toString()); } else if (localName.equalsIgnoreCase(GUID)){ currentMessage.setGuid(builder.toString()); } else if (uri.equalsIgnoreCase(AVATAR)){ currentMessage.setAvatar(builder.toString()); } else if (localName.equalsIgnoreCase(ITEM)){ messages.add(currentMessage); } builder.setLength(0); } } startDocument looks like: @Override public void startDocument() throws SAXException { super.startDocument(); messages = new ArrayList<Message>(); builder = new StringBuilder(); } startElement looks like: @Override public void startElement(String uri, String localName, String name, Attributes attributes) throws SAXException { super.startElement(uri, localName, name, attributes); if (localName.equalsIgnoreCase(ITEM)){ this.currentMessage = new Message(); } } Tony

  • Why doesn't a LinkButton work with a table as it's content?

    - by Telos
Using ASP.NET 3.5, you can create a LinkButton then define content inside of it. It works fine if I have div tags or any kind of text or anything, but if I use a table the click doesn't actually post back for some reason. This should take you to google (you'll get an error there but it should still go) for instance: <asp:LinkButton ID="lbTest" PostBackUrl="http://www.google.com" runat="server"> <table> <tr> <td>Test</td> <td>col2</td> <td>col3</td> </tr> </table> </asp:LinkButton> I could work around it by building a "table" with divs I guess, but I hate formatting with divs.

  • Cleaning Up Online Games with Positive Enforcement

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Anyone who has played online multiplayer games, especially those focused on combat, can attest to how caustic other players can be. League of Legends creators are fighting that, rather successfully, with a positive-reinforcement honor system. The Mary Sue reports: Here’s the background: Six months ago, Riot established Team Player Behavior — affectionately called Team PB&J — a group of experts in psychology, neuroscience, and statistics (already, I am impressed). At the helm is Jeffrey Lin, better known as Dr. Lyte, Riot’s lead designer of social systems. As quoted in a recent article at Polygon: We want to show other companies and other games that it is possible to tackle player behavior, and with certain systems and game design tools, we can shape players to be more positive. Which brings us to the Honor system. Honor is a way for players to reward each other for good behavior. This is divvied up into four categories: Friendly, Helpful, Teamwork, and Honorable Opponent. At the end of a match, players can hand out points to those they deem worthy. These points are reflected on players’ profiles, but do not result in any in-game bonuses or rewards (though this may change in the future). All Honor does is show that you played nicely. 6 Ways Windows 8 Is More Secure Than Windows 7 HTG Explains: Why It’s Good That Your Computer’s RAM Is Full 10 Awesome Improvements For Desktop Users in Windows 8

  • How do I route watir through a proxy pragmatically?

    - by feydr
I'm trying to route watir through a proxy pragmatically -- this means within the script I'd like to change my proxy dynamically before launching the browser. Here's what I've tried so far (and so far am failing): I'm running chrome and lucid lynx ubuntu. I chose TREX cause I thought watir might be making use of PROXY or something. I rewrote /usr/bin/google-chrome as: #!/bin/bash /opt/google/chrome/chrome --proxy-server="$TREX" $@ The reason I'm passing in the environment variable to proxy-server rather than http_proxy is because I never could get http_proxy to work as is anyways then I did a simple: require 'rubygems' require 'watir-webdriver' ENV['TREX'] = "XX.XX.XX.XX:YY" browser = Watir::Browser.new(:chrome) browser.goto("http://mysite.com") Anyways, what is happening here is that it is forwarding me to the login page of the proxy rather than just forwarding the request. What am I missing here? I feel like I'm pretty close.

  • How to translate, use JSON in GWT?

    - by graybow
I'm new in gwt. and need to know how to use JSON in gwt so i try this simple data loader but i'm still confuse. I create a project named 'tesdb3' in eclipse. I create the PHP side to access the database, and made the output as JSON.. I create the userdata.php in folder war. then I compile tesdb3 project. Folder tesdb3 and the userdata.php in war moved in local server(I use WAMP). I put the PHP in folder tesdb3. This is the result from my localhost/phpmyadmin/tesdb3/userdata.php [{"kode":"002","nama":"bambang gentolet"}{"kode":"012","nama":"Algiz"}] From that result I think the PHP side was working good. Then I create UserData.java as JSNI overlay like this: package com.tesdb3.client; import com.google.gwt.core.client.JavaScriptObject; class UserData extends JavaScriptObject{ protected UserData() {} public final native String getKode() /*-{ return this.kode; }-*/; public final native String getNama() /*-{ return this.nama; }-*/; public final String getFullData() { return getKode() + ":" + getNama(); } } Then Finally in the tesdb3.java: public class Tesdb3 implements EntryPoint { String url= "http://localhost/phpmyadmin/tesdb3/datauser.php"; private native JsArray<UserData> getuserdata(String Json) /*-{ return eval(json); }-*/; public void LoadData() throws RequestException{ RequestBuilder builder = new RequestBuilder(RequestBuilder.POST, URL.encode(url)); builder.sendRequest(null, new RequestCallback(){ @Override public void onError(Request request, Throwable exception) { Window.alert("error " + exception); } public void onResponseReceived(Request request, Response response) { getuserdata(response.getText()); //this is how i use the userdata json(is this already translated?) UserData UD = null; String LKode =UD.getKode(); String LName =UD.getNama(); Label L = new Label(LKode+""+LName); RootPanel.get().add(L); } }); } public void onModuleLoad() { try { LoadData(); } catch (RequestException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } The result is blank(i use development mode). and there was an eror like this:(I show it just some part) 10:46:29.984 [ERROR] [tesdb3] Uncaught exception escaped com.google.gwt.core.client.JavaScriptException: (ReferenceError): json is not defined fileName: http://localhost:1092 lineNumber: 2 stack: ("")@http://localhost:1092:2 My question is: How I use the translated Json in right way?? Is there any wrong use from my code? Is that necessary to move the compiled project to local server folder?(i do it following a tutorial from google). Sorry too many ask. but i'm really really confused.

  • ASP.NET + GoDaddy Free Hosting?

    - by Sahat
Has anyone successfully been able to deploy ASP.NET website to GoDaddy's free hosting? I am talking about free hosting that comes with a domain package from GoDaddy. The catch of the free hosting is having an annoying Google Ads banner in a frame on top of the page. I've searched Google, stackoverflow and GoDaddy forums but I can't find anywhere the solution to my problem. When I upload a ASP.NET website to GoDaddy, it gives me an error - something about TrustLevel. Someone told me that by default asp.net websites have Full Trust Level which GoDaddy doesn't allow. I've even tried changing Trust Level to Medium manually, but with no luck. What may be the problem?

  • Where does one get Visual Source Safe 2005?

    - by strongopinions
I would like to install VSS 2005 so I can work on a project that is stored under it. Does anyone have any idea where the VSS 2005 client can be obtained? It does not appear to be on my VS2005 install disc (although that is for Team Suite). I cannot get any help from Google. I have an MSDN license (AA edition) but it doesn't seem to be there. This is a real product right? Just to clarify preemptively based on some of the discussions I see on Google when I search for things like "VSS 2005," I am aware of the flaws in VSS and I still need to get it working; I am not interested in converting the project to Subversion; I am not able to transfer it to TFS; I am not able to upgrade the project to VS2008. Thanks.
