  • What and all the areas of a Linux a PHP developer should know about? (Like just commands of it or something advanced)

    I've developed a website using PHP but I implemented it on Windows OS and hosted it on Windows server. I just searched the PHP job market to know the on-going technology requirement and to keep my knowledge up-to-date accordingly with the job market. I see more are asking for LAMP stack. I understand the sort of skills required for a developer in PHP and MySQL. But coming to the Linux and Apache what kind of the skills exactly companies expect from a developer? On what should I be focusing in case of Linux, Apache whilst developing my website using these LAMP stack? I am going to develop a new website and want it to be using LAMP. But I want to know what difference it makes? Why LAMP stack got more demand in the job market compared to WAMP ?     I have written an O/R database wrapper that generates some wrapper methods for stored procs it reads from the database. Now I need to produce some custom wrapper code if an input parameter of a stored proc is defaulted to NULL. The problem is - I get stored proc parameters using: SqlCommandBuilder.DeriveParameters(command) and it doesn't bring parameter defaults. Is there any way to look up those defaults? Are they stored anywhere in the database? BTW, I'm using SQL Server 2008

    I am running a web application on BEA Weblogic 9.2. Until recently, we were using JDK 1.5.0_04, with JAI 1.1.2_01 and Image IO 1.1. In some circumstances (we never figured out exactly why), when we were processing large images (but not that large - a few MB), the JVM would crash without any error message or stack trace or anything. This didn't happen much in production, but enough to be a nuisance and eventually we were able to reproduce it. We decided to switch to JRockit90 1.5.0_04 and we were no longer able to reproduce the problem in our test environment, so we thought we had it licked. Now, however, after the application server has been up for a while, we start getting the error message, "Not enough storage is available to process this command" during image operations.     I'm making a small script in python with ttk and I have a problem where a function runs where it shouldn't. The button code looks as follows: btReload = ttk.Button(treeBottomUI, text="Reload", width=17, command=loadModelTree(treeModel)) btReload.pack(side="left") and the function is as this: def loadModelTree(tree): print ("Loading models...") allModels = os.listdir(confModPath) for chunk in allModels: ... For some reason, the function runs without the button being pressed. Why?

  • Use bug tracker to get things done and manage personal tasks?

    This is slightly off-topic, but can only be answered by programmers and is useful to many programmers: Do you think it is useful to use a bug tracking system to keep track of personal todo items and to Get Things Done? I have not tried that; in fact, I don't have much experience with bug tracking systems. For my todo lists, I have played around with Google Tasks and Remember The Milk, but both of them have shortcomings: Google Tasks: I like that you can create todo lists easily, can reorder items in the list and easily create hierarchies. But it is way too simplistic and does not allow to tag tasks or move tasks from one list to another. Remember The Milk: It is nice and sleek, but you cannot create hierarchies of tasks, cannot arbitrarily reorder tasks and cannot set dependencies of tasks. That's where a bug tracking system should come in: Since I think (maybe too much?) like a programmer, my tasks have a natural hierarchy and a tree of dependencies, like in a Makefile. Here are two examples: The task of writing my thesis is done when several milestones are done. Some of these milestones can run in parallel (writing background chapter, running experiments A, running experiments B), others depend on each other (writing main chapter depends on first getting results from experiments A). The same is true for more personal goals: I want to host a dinner party, which requires finding a good date, finishing the guest list, making invitations, finding nice recipes, cooking, ... For me, all these tasks involve hierarchical dependencies and milestones that bug tracking systems should be able to handle? Here is an article that explains how to do advanced GTD with Remember The Milk, but he has to use several workarounds: (1) add a general tag 'wait' to tasks that are waiting for others to be completed but you cannot enter the IDs of the tasks that they are waiting for, (2) starting some special tasks with "." so that they are at the top of the alphabetically sorted list and signal that others are 'below' it as subgoals. Bug tracking systems should be able to handle these things much more naturally? Does anyone have experience and can recommend a lightweight bug tracking system that might be good for this? Other requirements: Should run as web app, should allow me to tag a task with several tags (like 'work', 'fun', 'short-task', 'errands', ...).

I am writing a web service asynchronously and I want to be able to run some tests to see if the asynchronous pattern is really going to make it more scalable.     I am new to MS ADO and trying to understand how to set the size on command parameters as created by the command.CreateParameter (Name, Type, Direction, Size, Value) The documentation says the following: Size Optional. A Long value that specifies the maximum length for the parameter value in characters or bytes. ... If you specify a variable-length data type in the Type argument, you must either pass a Size argument or set the Size property of the Parameter object before appending it to the Parameters collection; otherwise, an error occurs. 1.) What should one pass for fixed-size parameters? Is it a "don't care"? I was a bit confused by the example found here, in which they set size to 3 for an adInteger parameter with Value set to a variant of type VT_I2 pPrmByRoyalty->Type = adInteger; pPrmByRoyalty->Size = 3; pPrmByRoyalty->Direction = adParamInput; pPrmByRoyalty->Value = vtroyal; VT_I2 implies two bytes. A tagVARIANT struct is 16 bytes. How did they land on three? I see that the enum value for adInteger happens to be three, but I suspect that is just a coincidence. So it's a bit confusing what to pass for fixed-size parameters. The team I'm working with has always passed sizeof(int) for adInteger, and it seems to work. Is that correct? Now, for "variable-length" parameters: we are instructed by the documentation to pass "the maximum length .. in characters or bytes". 2.) For adVarChar, is it sufficient to pass the max width as defined in the database? 3.) What about the Wide types (e.g. adVarWChar)? Is it characters or bytes? 4.) How about adVariant, which could contain fixed- or variable-length data? 5.) Do arrays ever come into play here? (we don't pass them as parameters, just curious) Any references or personal insights are welcome.

    Hi, on my silverlight 4 app I am trying to link up the drop event on a list box to my viewmodel. I am using expression blend 4's event trigger and invokecommandaction to hook up the drop event. Setting break points on my viewmodel, I can see the relevant function is fired when I drag a file onto the list box, however I cant seem to get access to the drageventArgs. I tried sending the entire listbox as a command parameter, and that doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks
