  I have written a simple network program on java using sockets. Program has a client and a server. When user types a word on client side, server simply return this word to client. On server side I use Serversocket and bind it to port 4444. Why does not firewall block this connection on my server PC? I ask this question because earlier I wrote this program using corba technology, and firewall on my server PC was blocking the connection to this port; when I disabled the firewall the program worked fine.

  I am learning how to encrypt the ConnectionString for our C# (3.5) Application. I read the .Net Framwork Developer Guide (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/89211k9b(VS.80).aspx) about securing connection string. but not fully understand the contents. It says "The connection string can only be decrypted on the computer on which it was encrypted." We have a release machine which will build our application which will generate the OurApp.exe.config and then install it to many product machines. Is that meam we have to have this encryption process separated with our application and run it at individual product machine? We may use the "RSAProtectedConfigurationProvider". It mentioned we need encryption key for that provider. when and how we should provide the encryption key? thanks,

• How to enable an AdventureWorks database in a web application?

  I am developing a C#/SQL ASP.NET web application in VS 2008. I want the users to be able to select an Adventureworks table and then an input file. The user is then able to map columns from the file with the selected table. This app works fine now in VS. But when I Browse in IIS, it doesn't show any of the tables. I think this is because currently Adventureworks connection string is integrated security (Windows authentication). If I want users to be able to select a table, do I have to change connection to SQL Server authentication? And if so, is the only way to do this to reinstall SQL Server? Or can I just reinstall Adventureworks? And if I reinstall SQL Server, do I need to reinstall VS also for this to work? This could be painful...

  I have a computer with 1M of RAM and no other local storage. I must use it to accept 1 million 8-digit decimal numbers over a TCP connection, sort them, and then send the sorted list out over another TCP connection. The list of numbers may contain duplicates, which I must not discard. The code will be placed in ROM, so I need not subtract the size of my code from the 1M. I already have code to drive the ethernet port and handle TCP/IP connections, and it requires 2k for its state data, including a 1k buffer via which the code will read and write data. Is there a solution to this problem?

  Now I'm in such a situation that there is a group of predefined tasks for multiple clients to do(any client can take any task). When a client connects to the server, server choose a task from the uncompleted tasks and send it to the client. It takes a while for the client to finish the task and send the result back to the server. Since a task should be sent to only one client, server should process requests in a serialized way. Now I have two plans to do it: create a thread for each client connection and all the threads take turns accessing the task pool, or use epoll listening on all the connection and process for each event of clients. Which one is better for the job? Or is there any other ideas? The server will be run on a multi-core machine.

• How Proxy server works with tcp/http connections?

  Since I am a beginner in the world of internet/networking, I always mess up with these kinds of doubts in my head while programming ;) .. My doubts are, While working behind a proxy, how my requests and responses work? Means my request headers and data will first reach to Proxy server- then proxy server sends it(same headers and data) to corresponding server. And server responses to it with a response header and body to the proxy server-then proxy server sends it to my computer. Wright? While using websockets we are upgrading our http connection to tcp. At this time what is happening @ Proxy server? Does the proxyserver also upgrades its connection to plain TCP? After opening such TCP connections, does the proxy server able to track/log those socket messsages? And most importantly, Is the proxy server transparent or acting like an original server infront of a client? Thanks for any answers or helpful links in advance.

  Problem: I want to write a process that will allow a user to take photos with the device and for those photos to then be uploaded to some listener in the cloud. The user should not have to do anything to initiate the upload, a background listener would just watch the folder and as long as it finds files in it it would upload them and delete them. Two problems: 1) how to keep the program running in the background even after the user is no longer taking pictures (and if they reboot the device for it to wake up and finish the uploads, if any remain) 2) assuming the connection is spotty (as it always is) how to verify that a given image has completed its upload, and if not, to resubmit it. I don't need any code examples, I just would like opinions on the best strategy to get this implemented. I was going to use Apache commons and just do an upload to a PHP, but am not sure what sort of error checking exists to take into account a connection drop mid file. TIA.

I think it might be something to do with how my files are nested but it makes no sense. I am opening the SQL connection in the header file. • Subsonic: Select on a View, locks the table update?

  Hi, I have a Web site live and running now. I am using the Subsonic to handle the database connections etc. I am getting time out expired error while updating a table (say Employee). When I check sp_who2, I see the suspended connection for the PID which is updating with a block by anothor pid, so I run the profiler and found out when ever this suspended connection occur, the blocked pid is a select statement on the view (say ActiveEmployees, which is the same as the table but with some where conditions). Anyone know why a Select statement on the view could cause failure in update. If it is other (like select fails due to update) may be reasonable. Is there any way for me to make select on a view without locking the table? PS: I am using the Sql server 2005 and subsonic 2.2. Thanks

I need to get entries that already exist so that they can be placed in the work of the day.   How can I Submit client side computer user's answers(to a multiple choice question) to the server using JAVA I have a centralized server and about 1000 client systems. In these 1000 systems students take multiple choice quiz at at time (in some 2 hrs time). Now i've to send all these answers of these questions to the server in an asynchronous threaded queue when the student answer each question (all 1000 students) Also client have to wait if the server connection is a failure, in this case students should be able to continue taking quiz/exam. When I get the connection these answers in queue should be submitted to the server system. How can I solve this problem? Please suggest/help me in this.

  Hello, Using Visual Studio 2010 10.0.20319.1 RTMRel and SQL Server Express 10.50.1600.1 I'm trying to add a new SQL Server Database .mdf, however, I receive the following error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 – Connection string is not valid) I have enabled TCP/IP and Named Pipelines, added Firewall Exceptions for Sql Server, I am successfully connecting from VS in the Server Explorer window. I would appreciate if someone can pint me to a solution to my problem. Thank you.

• PHP problems when transfering code from Windows to OS X

  I have recently bought a new MacBook Pro. Before I had my MacBook Pro I was working on a website on my desktop computer. And now I want to transfer this code to my new MacBook Pro. The problem is that when I transfered the code (I put it on Dropbox and simply downloaded it on my MacBook Pro) I started to see lots of error messages in my PHP code. The error message I”m receiving is: Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /some/file.php:1) in /some/file.php on line 23 I have done some research on this and it seems that this error is most frequently caused by a new line, simple whitespace or any output before the <?php sign. I have looked through all the places where I have cookies that are being sent in the HTTP request and also where I'm using the header() function. I haven’t detected any output or whitespace that possibly could interfere and cause this problem. Noteworthy is that the error always says that the output is started at line 1. Which got me thinking if there is some kind of coding differences in the way that the Mac OS X and Windows operating systems handle new lines or white spaces? Or could the Dropbox transfer messed something up?   I'm using an external browser request to authenticate myself with the SoundCloudAPI in OSX. My app launches, and has a button that opens an external browser window to authenticate against SoundCloud. When I click "connect" in the new window, I get a "External Protocol Request" that is consistent with my custom launch URI scheme. Clicking this loads the app, and it gets the correct credentials. The trouble is, the browser window never changes - it simply says that it's connecting forever. There is no "connection confirmed" alert coming from SoundCloud. I know I'm logged in because I can make the correct calls to the API to get things such as my username. Why isn't the browser confirming the connection or dismissing? The same thing happens if I load the authentication in an internal WebView in the app.
