  Hello, I'm trying to convert some c code to assmebly, and I need some help. char encode(char plain){ __asm{ mov eax, plain add eax, 2 ret } //C code /* char code; code = plain+2; return code;*/ } First problem is that visual studio complains that the register size doesn't match, i.e. eax is too small/large for char. I was under the impression that they were both DWORDs. Also, if I leave the variable in eax, and ret in assembly, it'll actually return that variable, right?

• How do I use custom member properties for people on my .NET website

  I am trying to make an asp.net website using Visual web dev and C# that accesses data in an SQL database. For my site, I need to be able to save and access additional user properties such as age and gender. I have been playing around with the built in .NET Login tools but I don't understand how to keep track of the additional properties (age, gender...) I could store all the users information in my own database but how do I correlate the users data in my DB to the usernames in the member database that is automatically created?

• AnkhSVN: moving a project to another repo

  My task is to move this VS solution and projects to another SVN server. I'm working with Visual Studio 2010 RC1 and AnkhSVN 2.1.7819.... Currently the files are all bound to a repo at C:\Repositories\foo. I'd like to move it to http://someSite/svn/foo I'm presented with this error message: Repository UUID '152c39db-5799-4234-85f2-074004a6fcad' doesn't match expected UUID '6c83444d-7f93-d64a-b0a0-23283495cf17' Questions How can I avoid this message in AnkhSVN? Are there better solutions for moving the source into a repo on the new target? How can I get Ankh to 'forget' that repo at C:\Repositories\ forever?

This can be with methods such as: directing their attention to the thing that needs their attention with a balloon hint automatically dropping down a combo-box triggering an animation showing a modal dialog box etc What is the mechanism where a controller tells the view to show a validation message for some controls, given that different views have different notification methods? p.s. the controller doesn't know the order that controls are physically arranged in the view (e.g. LTR locale wants to notify the user in a top-down-left-to-right visual order, while RTL locale wants to notify the user in a bottom-up-right-to-left order)

• Which version of Windows 7 for .NET Developers

  Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 7. As a .NET developer I'm not interested in developing Windows 7 components at this stage, but was curious which version would suffice to Install Visual Studio/SQL Server and do some web development testing against the local instance of IIS. I don't care too much about the superfluous features of any Windows 7 editions, I just need to know which one will keep me right for running apps and writing some code. Also, does Windows 7 force the "run as administrator" against VS? Any recommendations?

• Referencing a union inside a structure using union tag gives incorrect address

  I had a need to declare a union inside a structure as defined below: struct MyStruct { int m_DataType; DWORD m_DataLen; union theData { char m_Buff [_MAX_PATH]; struct MyData m_myData; } m_Data; }; Initially, I tried accessing the union data as follows (before I added the m_Data declaration): MyStruct m_myStruct; char* pBuff = m_myStruct.theData::m_Buff; This compiles but returns to pBuff a pointer to the beginning of the MyStruct structure which caused me to overwrite the m_DataType & m_DataLength members when I thought I was writing to the m_Buff buffer. I am using Visual Studio 2008. Can anyone explain this unexpected behavior? Thanks.

  Howdy, I have a database I am using the Visual Studio 2010 Database Project tool vsdbcmd.exe to create a schema from. vsdbcmd /a:Import /dsp:Sql /model:"Database" /cs:"Server=SqlServer; Initial Catalog=DatabaseName; Integrated Security=SSPI;" The tool is reporting an error: Error TSD02016, Gen-259 (12,50) The column name is not valid. No table name was specified. How would I go about pinpointing where this error is originating? I have found one resource on the internet (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com....) that points to a possibility of a keyword used incorrectly, but the error messages are not the same. What is Gen-259? • How can I prevent tab characters etc. from being pasted into an asp.net textbox?

  Hello, I'd like to have an asp.net textbox that people can paste content into and it works like notepad, i.e. no formatting or special characters will get entered. I take text and pass it to a web service which manipulates it and converts it into a tab delimited file. The problem I've experienced is sometimes people copy from MS Word and paste that content in and somehow even the tab characters etc. get passed to the web service. I run routines now to strip that information out but it would be so much easier if the textbox on the web page didn't capture anything but the text itself, i.e. visible characters (numbers, letters, punctuation). Anyone have a suggestion to have a textbox that doesn't capture formatting and non-visual characters? Thank you.

• How to Maintain per-Client State in a WCF Service?

  I've created a WCF service in which I would like it to maintain state between calls from the client. I figured the easiest way to do this was to add this attribute to the service: [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerSession)] since this is supposed to keep a separate service alive for each client over the life of the client proxy (or timeout in the extreme case). I also added a test function that tracks a list of user inputs, and spits out a concatenated string with all the inputs over the life of the service. When I run this in the test client generated by visual studio, I find that the list I was using to hold past data is reset with each call. Is there something else I need to do to maintain state per session?

• Keyboard Simulation not working with Keyboard hook for modifier keys

  I have a piece of software that is being used to simulate a certain device on a touchscreen, this device already runs an application that receives keyboard input from the device. My software (reffered to as simulator) displays a virtual keyboard and runs the application. Thus, the simulator sends keys with input simulator: http://inputsimulator.codeplex.com/ And the applciation listens to keys with the following keyboard hook: https://svn.cyberduck.io/tags/release-4-1/source/ch/cyberduck/core/GlobalKeyboardHook.cs My problem is, what some keys from the device's hardware actually do is to sent a key combination (ex: left-alt + 1) to the application and a weird scenario is occurring: The application listens to normal keyboard inputs The simulator sends keys to other applications (ie: visual studio responds to the keys sent when debugging) The simulator can send single keys to the application (I can type) The simulator CANNOT send key combinations to the application (alt+1 is received as just 1 in the application) This started happenning when we imported the application's dll into the same process from the simulator. Could there be any reason why I can't simulate key combinations for a hook in the same process? Is there any easy fix for this?

• Convert 2 bytes to a number

  I have a control that has a byte array in it. Every now and then there are two bytes that tell me some info about number of future items in the array. So as an example I could have: ... ... Item [4] = 7 Item [5] = 0 ... ... The value of this is clearly 7. But what about this? ... ... Item [4] = 0 Item [5] = 7 ... ... Any idea on what that equates to (as an normal int)? I went to binary and thought it may be 11100000000 which equals 1792. But I don't know if that is how it really works (ie does it use the whole 8 items for the byte). Is there any way to know this with out testing? Note: I am using C# 3.0 and visual studio 2008

  I am creating a Windows Mobile Application in C# and Visual Studio 2008. The application will have 5-6 main 'screens'. There will also be bar (/area) with information (e.g. a title, whether the app is busy, etc) above the screens, and a toolbar (or similar control) below the screens with 5-6 buttons (with images) to change the active screen (i.e. the screens will share the top bar and toolbar) What is the best way to implement this? Use multiple forms, and just include the toolbar and top-bar in each Use a single form and something like the Tab control (but customised) to contain the screens Something else?   I'm trying to compile a very simple wxPython script into an executable by using PyInstaller on Windows Vista. The Python script is nothing but a Hello World in wxPython. I'm trying to get that up and running as a Windows executable before I add any of the features that the program needs to have. But I'm already stuck. I've jumped through some loops in regards to MSVCR90.DLL, MSVCP90.DLL and MSVCPM90.DLL, which I ended up copying from my Visual Studio installation (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\x86\Microsoft.VC90.CRT). • How does a debug build make reverse engineering easy?

  Some answer here stated that debug info would make it easier to reverse engineer the software. When I use Visual C++ and distribute an executable with debugging information but without other files (.pdb), will it contain any interesting things? I looked to the executable with a hex editor and found nothing like symbol names, for now I assume the .exe file just links to information in the .pdb files, right? Do you know whether it contains variable names? function/member names? line numbers? anything interesting? Thanks!

• Accessing TFS from Powershell

  Hello I am new to PowerShell and I am trying to get branches from TFS and merge them using a PowerShell script. Unfortunately I am failing a first hurdle. I do have Visual Studio 2010 install on my local machine and can access the TFS server (also 2010) fine. I am running the script from my local machine and have the following lines: $tfs = get-tfs http://TFSServerName:8080/TFSProject $branchfolders = $tfs.VCS.GetItems('$/Dev/Branches/', $tfs.RecursionType::OneLevel) and I receive the following error on the second line 2 above Exception calling "GetItems" with "2" argument(s): "Unable to connect to the remote server" I have configured the TFS server to accept incoming connections on port 8080 which works but I am now not to sure how to resolve this error. Is further configuration required? Thanks for any help given.

• trying to decide between asp.net and jsp

  Hey Guys, I am wondering if anyone can shed some lights on the situation. I am about to start a project and trying to figure out what solution is best to go with asp.net or java jsp pages I have personally worked alot with .net and am really happy with the framework and Visual studio as IDE I find it easy to work with and there is a massive community support behind .net, i can get alot done quickly I have not every written anything use java jsp, there will be a learning curve here , so my experience is limited here. however after seeing jira i am very impressed with its capabilities, it has changed alot since the old days ( java 1.2 ) that i used to work with, and the fact that it runs under linux is a huge plus, so i am trying to decide is the learning curve, worth the price ? so given the situation above what would you recommended?   I placed a control into a grid. let's say the control is derived from public class 'ButBase' which is derived in its turn from System.Windows.Controls.Button. The code normally compiles and app works just fine. But there's something really annoying. When you try to switch to xaml-design tab it will say 'The document root element is not supported by the visual designer', which is normal and I'm totally okay with that, but the thing is, that all the xaml code is underlined and VS2010 says: 'Cannot create an instance of ButBase' although still normally compiles and able to run. I've tried the same code in VS2008, it said that needs to see a public parameterless constructor in the ButBase, and even after I put one it showed the same error. What do I miss here?

• Pretty Printer for T-SQL?

  I'm looking for a good T-SQL Pretty Printer so that all the code looks consistant between developers in our project. Preferably a free/open source one, but paid for isn't out of the realms of possibility as long as it's reasonably priced. Are there any particular industry leaders? I'm not that fussed about what particular standard it uses, but the more configurable the better. That way we can have little style wars among the developers and have a bit of fun to boot. ;-) I suppose I should add that Visual Studio and Management Studio integration would be considered favourably.

• Runing directx samples on a Windows Mobile 6.1 device

  Hi, I tried to run the directx samples from ..\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\Samples\PocketPC\CPP\win32\directx\d3dm\tutorials on m Samsung Omnia and on the emulator and it doesn't work because a deployment error. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and have installed Windows Mobile SDK Standard and Professional refresh. The device is correctly plugged in and set up for active sync(I know this because other samples work, also a creating Win32 smart device and running it works) When I try to run the application it compiles without errors but the message: " There were deployment errors, Continue? Yes/No" appears If I manually copy the application from the debug folder to the device and run it from there, it works. The same deployment error message appears if I try it on an emulator. Other applications are deploying successfully. Is there any way to make the deployment work? Maybe there is an obscure option I need to set... Thank you

• XML deserialization doesn't read in second level

  Sorry if the title doesn't make much sense, but I'm not too familiar with the terminology. My question is: I have a config.xml file for a program I'm working on. I created an xsd file by 'xsd.exe config.xml'. I then took this xsd and added it to the solution in visual studio. My last step used a program called xsd2code that turned that xsd file into a class I can serialize too. The problem is it doesn't read more then a layer deep in the xml tree. By this I mean the elements in the root node get deserialized into my object, but those that are in a node inside the root node are not. I found this out by putting a breakpoint after the deserialization and looking at my object. Any Ideas? Let me know if this needs some clarification or you need a snippet of something.

• Why does Silverlight 4 Tools only give partial intellisense?

  I finally got Silverlight 4 Toolkit installed , referenced and working after the difficulty of finding the right namespace described in this question. But intellisense doesn't work fully: after I type "tk:", it doesn't pop up the various controls I have available, but if I type a control name out, e.g. DockPanel, then it works, as shown below. It will even give me intellisense after I type tk:DropPanel, which is odd. How can I get intellisense to work in all cases for the Silverlight 4 Toolkit? I can imagine I need another namespace, but this site says that this reference: is now all you need (and will be automatically used by both Visual Studio and Blend)
