• Should Site Title be Before or After Page Title?

  Apologies if this is a dupe. I tried searching, but didn't find anything specifically addressing this concern. When creating a large(ish) site, page titles usually reference both the site name and the current page name. However, it seems there are two main conventions: Bob's Awesome Site - Contact Page and Contact Page - Bob's Awesome Site I've looked around, and pages usually use one of the two variants above. Is there any reason to use one over the other? SEO/readability/usability/etc? I've thought about it, and have only come up with: Page first - Differentiates the tab when the browser is crowded with lots of tabs Site first - Immediately see the "parent" site, so to speak; more cohesive experience

• Best tool to recover removed files

  Using Ubuntu 10.10, I have a startup script that automatically removes my 'working directory'. This is a simple folder on my Desktop where I place a bunch of files that I use throughout the day. These are temporary files I need to store just for that one session. In order to keep things clean, my startup script does: rm -rf /home/user/Desktop/workdir mkdir /home/user/Desktop/workdir Works great. Till the moment I had some important files there and forgot to move them before shutting down. A few (2-3) sessions ago this happened and I now realize I need to recover the "workdir" directory. But several new ones have been created and removed in the meantime. What is the best way to recover this - if possible? I read about tools like scalpel but it seems they will scan my whole HD. I know the name of the folder and would like to just look for this workdir folder. What is best?

• YouTube: How to Style an AngularJS App on the Device

  I installed the Droid@Screen plugin into NetBeans IDE 8 so that you can see the Android device that I held in my hand while doing the demo below. The demo shows the usage of the Terminal window to create an Ionic Framework application (from "tabs", which is one of the cool templates that the framework provides), i.e., that means I can use AngularJS to create a Cordova application out of the box, with many mobile-oriented components available out of the box. Then I deploy the app to the Chrome browser on Android, which means I can interact with it in NetBeans, e.g., for CSS styling and JavaScript debugging. In this demo, I show how the background color of the deployed app can be changed live from NetBeans. After that, once I'm happy with the styling, I deploy the app again, but this time as a Cordova app, i.e., a hybrid HTML5 application, which means the app is packaged as a native app and deployed directly to the device from NetBeans. • Facebook Comments Lost

  I am using Facebook comments on couple of my blogs at the moment and I just found that somehow magically all the previous comments made on posts are gone and are no longer being displayed. I'm using wordpress for all of these blogs and Facebook Comments for WordPress to manage all the facebook comments. But somehow they all disappeared all of a sudden. Another problem which I've been facing lately is that I can't seem to moderate the faceboook comments. When I go to http://developers.facebook.com/tools/comments where there should be a list of all the comments made on my sites (against the Applications that I've created just for the sake of comments), there is nothing there. This has been the thing from the starting, before the comments vanished on my site, today So technically, there are two issues to solve here.

• Web technologies on GUI apps

  I developed many GUI applications for the Windows platform during my early professional career, and saw several GUI frameworks come, have whole magazines devoted to them, and then fade away. MFC is iconic. Tasked with writing yet another GUI application, I starter researching cross-platform frameworks like Qt and WxWindows. I found the same steep learning curves I knew from before, and tooling doesn't help much in building a functional and elegant user interface because its clumsy and complicated. But people are building beautiful and functional UIs on the Web all the time (look at this site!). The standards, the libraries, and the tools are certainly there. My thought and my question: Why not write a GUI in which most of the UI is handled by an embedded browser? I already know that the Qt widgets support a large part of CSS and JavaScript, and programmers with good knowledge about web development are relatively easy to find, ..., so... Have you done something like that before? What's your experience/advise?

• Why my domain redirect on Google Apps is returning 404?

  I have a configuration in the Google Apps Control Panel (dcc.securepaynet.net) to redirect <tombrito.com to <http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4499244H9. It worked fine until some days ago, but now it's returning 404. If you access tombrito.com you can see the favicon in the title of the browser tab, but the page shows a 404 error. The target page <http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4499244H9 is fine, it's only some problem with my redirect. Any idea what's wrong here?

• Solo .NET Programmer moving to a team

  I've been a solo .NET programmer for a small startup for the last 8 years. I've put together some pretty decent software, and I always strived to better myself and conform to best practices, including source control (SVN/TFS). I worked very closely with a team of engineers of other disciplines, but when it came down to the software I was the only one programming. I love the craft of programming and love learning new things to sharpen my tools. In 2 weeks I will be starting a new job in a team of 20 .NET developers. My position will be mid-level, and I will be working under some programmers with incredibly impressive backgrounds. Again, the team aspect of development will be new to me, so I'm looking for some general "new guy" tips that will help me be as effective and easy to get along with as possible from the get-go. Anything goes, including high level tips, and small day-to-day things about communication.

  The .NET MicroFramework claims to work on 64K RAM and has list of compatible targets vendors. At the same time, same vendors who ship hardware and create Board Support Packages (vendors like Adeneo) keep releasing something named Windows 7 CE BSP for the same hardware targets. Obviously the OS as heavy as WinCE needs more than 64K RAM. So, somehow .NET MicroFramework is relevant to WinCE, but how ? Is it part of bigger OS or is it base of it, or are both mutually exclusive ? Background: 0.00006103515625 GByte of RAM is same as 64Kbyte of RAM. • Are there serious companies that don't use version-control and continuous integration? Why?

  A colleague of mine was under the impression that our software department was highly advanced, as we used both a build server with continuous integration, and version control software. This did not match my point of view, as I only know of one company I which made serious software and didn't have either. However, my experience is limited to only a handful of companies. Does anyone know of any real company (larger than 3 programmers), which is in the software business and doesn't use these tools? If such a company exists, are there any good reason for them not doing so?

• Page load speeds effect on crawl rate

  We've noticed a big drop in the total pages crawled per day on our site, we have no control over the crawl rate in google webmaster tools so it's possible this has been changed by google. However it's a fairly large site and I wouldn't of thought that the crawl rate would've been decreased. What we have noticed though is a sizeable increase in page load times, in my mind this would be the cause. Can anyone else confirm if the crawl rate is directly correlated to page load time? Seems logical, longer page load time, less pages crawled. Any decent documentation on this would be appreciated, I don't normally have any input on SEO so this is new to me.

• How can I delay dropbox from starting, but not disable it?

  When I log into my user account on Ubuntu 10.10, there is a unsatisfying delay before my system becomes usable. Even launching a terminal, I have to wait a few seconds before the bash prompt appears. During this start-up period, the top process seems to be dropbox. I'm not sure what it's doing exactly (functionality is still fine as far as I can see), but I do know it really doesn't need to be doing it while I'm waiting for desktop to appear. (This is the standard Ubuntu with Gnome desktop, by the way.) What I would like to do is to be able to have a static or even dependency-based delay for dropbox to start. It would be nice if it waited for, e.g., 10 minutes, or for my browser tabs to load and a typing pause. Then it could churn away on file status or cache-chewing, and I would be happy. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

• How to retrieve packages from an ISO?

  I have an ISO image of BackTrack and I want to try it, but I don't want to mess up my bootloader with installing 2 Linuxes and a Windows. As BackTrack is Debian based I want to use its packages in my current Ubuntu. I tried mounting the ISO with Archive Mounter but whole operating system seems to be in casper/filesystem.squashfs file. I have seen this answer but none of those methods work, because I can't find any pool directory. The only file I suspect is filesystem.squashfs which is 3.3 GB in size. Please help me install tools from BackTrack's ISO.

  (in via Nancy) Customers using EPM 11.1.2.3 and a web browser to launch the Essbase Administration Services Console will lose the ability to launch EAS Console via the Web URL if they apply Java 1.7 build 45. Development is currently investigating this issue. Workaround: If Java 1.7 Update 45 has been installed, it will need to be uninstalled and a previous version will need to be installed. Older versions of Java are available in the Java Archive Note: Though it may work, Java 1.7 is not supported in previous versions of EAS.   Is there a way to check the consistency of a DirectX model (.x) ? Whilst compiling .x files with XNA GameStudio 3.1 compilation is aborted with the following error message: Error 2 Could not read the X file. The file is corrupt or invalid. Error code: D3DXFERR_PARSEERROR. C:\WFP\Browser\Content\m.x KiviBrowser Some models compile correctly without any error/warning and some abort as described. The files of each model have several thousand lines. I am creating the files in Googles SketchUp 8 where they all look fine and don't show any sign of corruption. Suppose I have such a model my XNA compiler won't compile because their is an inconsistency somewhere in the file - how could I identify this in order to correct it ?

• How does hreflang interact with geo targeting?

  If I have multiple subfolders that I wish to target at different countries, I'm thinking the ideal set up would be to specify rel="alternative" hreflang with a language AND country code (e.g. en-AU) and ALSO to geotarget that subfolder to the particular country. That way, the pages would be showing up both in the country-specific results (accessed via Search Tools) because of hreflang, AND the more generic country results from regular searches, because of geotargeting. Is this correct? p.s. What would happen if you geotargeted a subfolder which had e.g. pt-BR hreflang value (i.e. Portuguese-Brazil) to just Portugal?

  I have moved to Asia where my internet connection is censored and I'd like to check my messages from social sites which happen to be blocked. As virtually all proxy servers are blocked in this country, I've decided to attempt to roll my own encrypted proxy server. Please note, the key word here is encrypted—if the sniffer sees anything like f@c3b00k or w:k:p3d:ia travelling down the wire I'm had. I have a website hosted with GoDaddy (Windows with PHP 5.2 & IIS 7). Is there any way I can set up an encrypted proxy through this service? If so, how, and what open source tools are available to use?
