• Use pt-table-sync to setup a new MySQL DB

  I have 2 hosts (A and B). B contains a MySQL server with a database called mydb, and A contains a MySQL server with nothing (fresh install). I want to replicate the entire mydb from B to A, by running a script on A (I do not have shell access to B). Can I run this on A: pt-table-sync --execute h=b.mydomain.com,D=mydb h=a.mydomain.com I've read the docs but don't get a 100% comfort feeling (perhaps because of all the warnings about damaging your data if you don't know what you're doing). Will this work? as well, is h=a.mydomin.com necessary? (Will it route all traffic back in/out the local NIC?) can I use localhost or nothing at all?

One of the most popular question, I often receive is very similar to following: “How do I reset the password for SA username?” “I have forgotten the SA password, what should I do?” “Our DBA just left the job and now noone knows how to reset the SA password. Please help.” Solution Honestly, it is pretty simple to reset the password for SA username. You just have to login to the system where your SQL Server is installed. Open SQL Server Management Studio and login with the help of Windows Authentication. As local system is the admin of the SQL Server, you will get access with administration privileges. Now, open the database, expand Security >> Login folder and right click over SA username. Now, it will bring up the screen where you can change the password for SA.   I'm trying to set up postfix to allow relaying under a limited set of conditions: The destination domain is one of a pre-defined list -or- The client successfully logs in Here's the relevant bits o' config: smtpd_sasl_auth_enable=yes relay_domains=example.com smtpd_recipient_restrictions=permit_auth_destination,reject_unauth_destination smtpd_client_restrictions=permit_sasl_authenticated,reject The problem is that it requires that BOTH restrictions be satisfied, rather than either-or. Which is to say, it only allows relaying if the client is authenticated AND the recipient domain is @example.com. Instead, I need it to allow relaying if either one of the requirements is satisfied. How do I do this without resorting to running SMTP on two separate ports with different rules? Note: The context is an outbound-use-only (bound to 127.0.0.1) MTA on a shared web server which all site owners are allowed to relay mail to one of the "owned" domains (not server-local, though), and for which a limited set of "trusted" site owners are allowed to relay mail without restriction provided they have a valid SMTP login.

• PIN based Login in Windows 8.1 Missing

  I installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 Pro using Hyper-V, and updated with all updates via Windows Update. It's not domain joined. I cannot however activate a PIN based login for the installation and I'm not sure why. I'm using a Microsoft account to login (not just a local login). I have even manually enabled the feature using group policy (which apparently only should have mattered for a domain joined workstation anyway), rebooted, and it's still not available. As far as I can tell, everything else seems normal and is working as expected. For Sign-in options, I only see Password as a choice:

• osx 10.6.3 how does apache config work?

  hi, just got a macbook pro 15" so i'm unfamiliar with how the filesystem is laid out. i noticed when in my filesystem that i've got a few paths specifying httpd.conf /etc/apache2/httpd.conf /opt/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf the confs are different in lots of ways-- e.g. user, group, server_root, modules that are loaded, etc. the apache2 folders themselves also greatly differ. it seems that the one getting used is either /etc/apache2/httpd.conf or /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf i'm wondering if i might have messed up my system after installing some packages (php5, django, etc) via macports and maybe ended up with 2 apache2 instances. my questions are hence: - which httpd.conf is the one being used ? - what are the other files for? thanks

• Fedora12, XP and connection sharing via iptables

  Just a quick question ( I Hope ) To find out if what I'm trying is even possible. I am trying to share internet connection with Fedora12 as default gateway and XP machine hooked up via NIC using iptables commands as shown in Mark Sobell's book 'A Practical Guide To Fedora And Red Hat Enterprise Linux' These are the commands as placed in /etc/rc.local iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG iptables -t NAT -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE I did flip the in and out parameters to match my NIC configuration ( as opposed to example from book ) but other than that followed example. One thing to note is that Sobell did not mention whether this should work with mix of Linux and XP. One other note ( maybe meaningless ) is that I do have samba working between the two machines. • Can't log in using sa account for sql server 2008

  I installed SQL Server 2008. During the install I set it to mixed mode authentication and set the password for what I assume is the sa account. In the configuration manager I set tcp/ip and named pipes to enabled. When I open SQL Server Management Studio and try to log in - username: sa, password: whatIjustsetintheinstall, it fails with the error: Login failed for user sa. (error 18456). The error in Event Viewer is - Login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Password did not match that for the login provided. [CLIENT: <local machine>]. I know the password is right because I just set it. What am I doing wrong here? Is sa not the right user to be logging in with mixed mode? I've been reading through forum after forum but just cannot find anything that works.

• Two network cards in one Windows 7 PC

  Hi, I've upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. On Vista I used to run one network card (Intel 82566DC -2 Gigabit) for my internet which was connected to a Dovado USB mobile broadband router connected to a 3G modem. The IP setup on the card is set on DHCP. The second card (3com Ethernet link) was used to connect to our town's local WUG (wireless user group) and all worked fine. Now the problem I have with Windows 7 is that when I connect to the internet with the (Intel) first card, the internet work fine but as soon as I connect the second card to the wug my internet drops. If I then disconnect the first card (internet one) and try to connect to the wug it works. It seems that the two cards are fighting each other. Is there maybe something I can do to fix the problem? As you probably can gather from this post is that I am not an expert on PC's so please if you do answer do I in simple terms. :) Thanks, Martin

• Router stopping my python server

  This was originally posted in stackoverflow.com but it was suggested I move it here after it was realized it wasn't my code that was wrong. So my problem, very simply, is that I cannot get my computers that are connected to my router to communicate. example: If I ping a wireless computer I get no responce and the Request times out If I ping a computer wired to the modem directly it works fine. • OS X Server App ail not accept login credentials

  I cannot login to the server app and i know for sure all the login info is right. every time i enter my password the name window shakes to tell me it's invalid. I never post unless I'm out of ideas and I need it to be up so I can host my splash page tonight. i've spoken with "certified apple" specialists at some local mac stores and they are stumped too. Something is going on with the apache server, that's all i know for sure. I'll be monitoring this closely so any requests for info, etc. can be filled instantly. Thanks in advance. here's a few things i've noticed: I can ssh successfully into the server address as both root and admin. I've been fussing with the workgroup manager and could use guidance if that's where the problem lies. console shows this message repeatedly (org.apache.httpd[1890]) Exited with code: 1). • How long does a MacBook Pro battery last on a single charge?

  On the official apple website it says that all Macbook pro batteries last for 7 hours, and 8 hours on the 17" macbook pro. However when I called my local apple retailer and asked him, he said the battery has a 'stand by' time of 7 hours, but if I were doing something like using an IDE to program and not watching videos, etc it could last upto 5-6 hours. When I asked him about why the official site says 7 hours, he said yes but he didn't want to lie to me, and actually the battery only lasts 5-6 hours. Does anyone who owns a macbook pro shed any light on this, such as how long the battery will actually last? I'll be buying a 15" macbook pro.

• What happens when my domain provider cancels order after domain transfer?

  I purchased 2 domains say xyz.in and abc.com on october 2012 and I got emails that they will be expiring on oct 2013. I called my local domain provider and told him I'd like to transfer the domain from Webiq to GoDaddy to which he said I cannot unless the domain is active. He asked me to pay for both the domains, renew it and then I could transfer the domain via the domain panel. When I went to the domain panel I noticed that the order was made and so I made a transfer which happened successfully. Just as he mentioned the period of validity (1 year) for each domain got transferred to GoDaddy as well! Additionally, I added 1 year of period to both the domain via GoDaddy so both of them and also GoDaddy provided an extra free year to both these domains as I paid for the transfer on 11/10/2013 at 9:18 PM MST so both of these were stated to be valid till 2016 and that's what it showed when I did a whois lookup as well. But now it suddenly shows me that my domains are getting expired this year (and the whois also shows 2015). This is confusing as I have no idea who to blame for the missing one year. I'm wondering what would have happened say if my old domain provider's client who got my domain registered cancelled the order. Since it was no longer under their control would they still be able to deduce that one year? When I tried submitting a support request to Webiq they replied: Your domain "abc.com" has been transferred away from us on 17-11-2013 and the domain "xyz.in" was transferred away from us on 18-01-2014. There are no order cancellation actions placed. If you have any billing related issues kindly contact your parent reseller. I need some guidance on explaining what issue might have occurred or understanding how this domain control works!

• How to speed up file transfer to/from Ubuntu Server 11.10 (wifi)

  I've been searching AU & elsewhere for the last day and a half. Haven't found an answer so I joined AU to ask for help. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Ubuntu Server 11.10 Samba VSFTPD Windows 7 PC 2 MacBook Pro - Snow Leopard/Lion 1 iMac - Lion Wireless LAN using DLink DIR-655 Link Speed: 195 Mbit/s on Mac - 54Mbps on Windows ISP Connection: Cable - 20 down/3 up No Domain Controller. All machines are members of the same workgroup. No matter how I connect I can't get better than about 700K transfer rate up/down. Mac/PC, SMB/ftp, Domain Name/Local IP I've tried different user accounts and using different folders, different volumes on the server. Nothing seems to make a difference. 700K up/down. Period. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Alexander EDIT: Using sftp now and uploading seems to peak at 980k. After about 5 minutes into a 650MB file, downloading is at 1072k and climbing about 500b/s every ten seconds. If any of that matters... I was expecting a lot faster than 1Mb tx rate. Am I off base here? EDIT: From all I've read so far, perhaps the speed isn't that bad. I only installed Ubuntu out of boredom this past weekend. The trouble is, I like it. Guess it's time to ditch the wifi and run some Cat 5.

• Zabbix - Some of the monitored items don't refreh

  I'm experiencing a strange issue with Zabbix monitoring a MySQL server. Most of the data from the server such as MySQL queries per second and MySQL uptime , Buffers memory etc. update nicely while some data like CPU iowait time (avg1) , Host local time ,MySQL number of threads and other items which were monitored in the past has last check time of about a week ago. I can't find any logic in this, for example Mysql number of threads and Mysql queries per second are obtained in a similar way so it does not make sense one of them is monitored and one is not. Please help- how can I fix this? Update - I used zabbix_get from the zabbix server to check one of the items on the zabbix client and it works so the problem must be on the zabbix server side

• How can I tell what user account is being used by a service to access a network share on a Windows 2008 server?

  I've got a third-party app/service running on a Windows 2003 SP2 server that is trying to fetch something from a network share on Windows 2008 box. Both boxes are members of an AD domain. For some reason, the app is complaining about having insufficient permissions to read/write to the store. The app itself doesn't have any special options for acting on the authority of another user account. It just asks for a UNC path. The service is running with a "log on as" setting of Local System account. I'd like to confirm what account it's using when trying to communicate with the network share. Conversely, I'd also like more details on if/why it's being rejected by the Windows 2008 network share. Are there server-side logs on 2008 that could tell me exactly why a connection attempt to a share was rejected?

• UAC-account-users can't see their mounted network-drives

  I wrote a few login batches in the Group Policy Management which mount specified devices to specified usergroups. The batches work as they should as long UAC is disabled. My problem is that the UAC-account-users can't see their mounted network-drives because the login scripts run in elevated context. I tried to fix the problem with PsExec (-l) so that the network-folders are mapped with limited user rigths. But it seems that this won't work. (PsExec is already installed on all computers so it can work local.) Has anyone an idea how to fix that problem? I spended a long time in trying to fix the problem but I did not find any solutions about THIS problem.

• Understanding each other in web development

  During my career I have been lucky enough to work in several different roles within web development with many extremely talented people, from incredible designers who were passionate about the placement of every pixel right through to server administrators and DBAs who were always measuring the improvements they were making to their queries in the smallest possible unit. The problem I always faced was that more often than not I was stuck in the middle trying to mediate between these different functions and enable each side to understand the other’s point of view. The main areas of contention that there have always been between these functional groups in my experience have been at 2 key points: during the build phase and then when there is a problem post-build. During both of these times it is often easier for someone to pass the buck onto someone else than spend the time to understand the other person’s perspective. Below is a quick look at two upcoming tools that will not only speed up the build phase for each function, but  also help when it comes to the issues faced once a site has been pushed live. In my experience a web project goes through several phases of development. The first of these is design, generally handled as Photoshop files which are then passed onto a front-end developer. This is the first point at which heated discussions can arise. One problem I’ve seen several times is that the designer doesn’t fully understand the platform constraints that need to be considered, and as a result has designed something that does not translate very well or is simply not possible. Working at Red Gate, I am lucky enough to be able to meet some amazing people and this happened just the other day when I was introduced to Neil Kinnish and Pete Nelson, the creators of what I believe could be a great asset in this designer-developer relationship, Mixture. Mixture allows the front end developer to quickly prototype a web page with built-in frameworks such as bootstrap. It’s not an IDE however, it just sits there in the background and monitors the project files in the background so every time you save a file from your favorite IDE, it will compile things like LESS, compact your JavaScript and the automatically refresh your test browser so you can see the changes instantly. I think one of the best parts of this however is a single button that pushes the changed files up to the web so the designer can instantly see how far the developer has got and the problem that he is facing at that time without the need to spend time setting up a remote server. I can see this being a real asset to remote teams where there needs to be a compromise between the designer and the front-end developer, or just to allow the designer to see how the build is progressing and suggest small alterations. Once the design has been built into the front end the designer’s job is generally done and there are no other points of contention between the designer and the other functions involved in building these web projects. As the project moves into the stage of integrating it into the back end and deploying it to the production server other functions start to be pulled in and other issues arise such as the back-end developer understanding the frameworks that they are using such as the routes that are in place in an MVC application or the number of database calls that the ORM layer is actually making. There are many tools out there that can actually help with these problems such as mini profiler that gives you a quick snapshot of what is going on directly in the browser. For a slightly more in-depth look at what is happening and to gain a deeper understanding of an application you may be working on though, you may want to consider Glimpse. Created by Nik and Anthony, it is an application that sits at the bottom of your browser (installed via NuGet) which can show you information about how your application is pieced together and how the information on screen is being delivered as it happens. With a wealth of community-built plugins such as one for nHibernate and linq2SQL (full list of plugins on NuGet). It can be customized directly to your own setup to truly delve into the code to see what is happening, and can help to reduce the number of confusing moments about whether it is your code that is going wrong or whether there is something more sinister happening directly on the server. All the tools that I have mentioned in this post help to do one thing above all, and that is to ease the barrier of understanding between the different functions that are involved in building and maintaining a web application. In my experience it is very easy to say “Well, that’s not my problem”, simply because the two functions involved don’t truly understand the other’s point of view. Software should not only be seen as a way to streamline our own working process or as a debugging tool but also a communication aid to improve the entire lifecycle of a web project. • Securing data sent to an unencrypted WiFi AP

  The business plan of a project I'm involved in assumes selling certain WiFi-enabled devices to end users. All these devices originally have an unencrypted connection and a standard SSID. The problem is that although the user can connect to it and set both a new SSID and a WPA passphrase, these are being sent to the AP in plain text and thus can be intercepted by anyone nearby with a sniffer. What's the best solution to this problem, and why? Initially set up an encrypted wireless network at the device and supply the user with a printed passphrase Buy an SSL certificate for the AP's default IP address or local domain name (the APs aren't supposed to work as a router and have a captive portal & dnsmasq installed, so all of them can pretend to be myunit.example.com, as far as I understand) Something different Thank you.

• Where default settings are stored after applying GPO?

  When I apply a GPO that changes Service startup settings, where the default service startup settings are kept? And how can I read and modify them? The reason of the question is that I have a hundred of servers where most of services are disabled by a baseline GPO for hardening purposes. I want to relax this GPO by removing some services but I do not want that the service startup settings becomes default ones after the GPO is relaxed. So I want to keep the actual hardened state as a default state but allow local admins to change it if necessary. Thank you

• Start synergy on boot of Ubuntu 12.04

  I am having problems getting synergy to start on boot of my Ubuntu 12.04 desktop machine. I followed the troubleshooting at Start synergy on boot? completely, but I still couldn't get synergy to start on boot up. This is exactly what is being told to startup with ubuntu assuming I did the lightdm modification correctly. However, I don't see any synergy running, and I certainly can't control the other computer. Btw, I changed my ip in the log from what it actually is ~ Is this a necessary precaution or are ips local to the network? What does knowing my IP allow someone to do?
