• Deal with update location for click-once.

  I'm not sure how many people here are experts with visual studios, but I'd imagine a handful (not to raise expectations but to appeal to your egos :P). I'm working primarily in visual basic for now (though I hope to switch to c# in the near future and maybe a java or web app). Basically I'm trying to create an update feature that will work similarly to how common programs such as firefox or itunes update automatically. There is supposed to be provided functionality for this in what is called click once. I carry out the following procedures and get the following errors when trying to change the update url of my program to a password-protected ftp location. Go to project properties Go to publish click updates click browse click FTP Site Under Server put: web###.opentransfer.com Under Port: 21 Under Directory put: CMSOFT Passive mode is selected (which is what filezilla tells me the server is accessed with) Anonymous User is unselected and a username and password are typed in Push Ok Under Update location it shows: ftp://web###.opentransfer.com/CMSOFT I push Ok I see a message box titled Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express with an x icon Publish.UpdateUrl: The string must be a fully qualified URL or UNC path, for example "http://www.microsoft.com/myapplication" or "\server\myapplication". I've tried changing the directory to "CMSOFT/PQCM.exe" and the results are the same...hope this was descriptive enough.

• How to do i18n and create Windows Installer of Haskell programs?

  I'm considering using Haskell to develop for a little commercial project. The program must be internationalized (to Simplified Chinese, to be specific), and my customer requests that it should be delivered in a one-click Windows Installer form. So basically these are the two problems I'm facing now: I18n of Haskell programs: the method described in Internationalization of Haskell programs did work (partially) if I change the command of executing the program from LOCALE=zh_CN.UTF-8 ./Main to LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8 ./Main (I'm working on Ubuntu 10.10), however, the Chinese output is garbled, and I've no idea why is that. Distribution on Windows: I'm used to work under Linux and build & package my Haskell programs using Cabal, but what is the most natural way to create a one-click Windows Installer from a cabalized Haskell package? Is the package bamse the right way to go? ------ Details for the first problem ------ What I did was: $ hgettext -k __ -o messages.pot Main.hs $ msginit --input=messages.pot --locale=zh_CN.UTF-8 (Edit the zh_CN.po file, adding Chinese translation) $ mkdir -p zh_CN/LC_MESSAGES $ msgfmt --output-file=zh_CN/LC_MESSAGES/hello.mo zh_CN.po $ ghc --make Main.hs $ LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8 ./Main And the output was like: This indicates gettext is actually working, but for some reason the generated zh_CN.mo file is broken (my guess). I'm pretty sure my zh_CN.po file is encoded in UTF-8. Plus, aside from using System.IO.putStrLn, I also tried System.IO.UTF8.putStrLn to output the string, which didn't work either.

  I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around Java generic types. Here's a simple piece of code that in my mind should work, but I'm obviously doing something wrong.   Hi, I have copied a DB from one my computers and using it here. On trying to open the page which requires the fetching content from DB, on con.open I am getting this exception: Unable to open the physical file "E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\cakephp.mdf". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)". Unable to open the physical file "E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\cakephp_log.LDF". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)". Cannot open database "cakephp" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'Sarin-PC\Sarin'. I have attached the database from Management Studio Express 2008 and I have also checcked the connection string. Here it is: <connectionStrings> <add name="cn" connectionString="server=.\sqlexpress;database=cakephp;integrated security=true;uid=sarin;pwd=******"/> </connectionStrings> In Visual Studio, when I test the connection, it says "Test connection succeeded". However, there is one strange thing going on. When I login to the Management Studio, there is no + sign with the newly attached database, as shown. • In maven2, how do I assemble bits and pieces of different modules to create final distributions?

  I have four maven project: client api jar web service war ui jar web interface war The service war will need to be packaged to include the client api jar, together with javadocs (so that each version is distributed with a matching client and documentation). The web interface war will need the ui jar and all the dependencies (webstart/applet deployment). So I need a 5th project that does all the packaging. How to do this with ant or a script is perfectly clear to me, but not in maven. I tried the following: having the javadocs included as part of the war packaging: this requires the execution of the javadocs goal in project 1 before execution of package in project 2. Haven't found a way to bind plugins/goals across different projects. Using the assembly plugin in project2 had the same problem. create a fifth project and use the assembly plugin. Still the same problems as before, with the problem that since I need different pieces from each sub-project I do not understand how this can be done using the assembly. Is this too hard to do in maven, and should I just give up? Or I am looking at it wrong, in which case, how should I be looking at it? Thanks! Upon further reflection, here is a partial answer: Each project should build all its artifacts. This is done by having the plugins configured to run as per the prepare-resources and package phases. So, in my case, I prepare all that needs to be generated (jar, javadocs, xsd documentation, ...) as different artifacts so that a single "package" goal execution creates all. So, it's not "how project 2 forces project 1 to run different goals", but it's "make project 1 create all of its artifact as part as the normal lifecycle). This seems to simplify things.

  For a very specific software application, we maintain a base of machines running fvwm 2.5. To update the menu structure, the fvwm2rc default config file is replaced during the update process performed by a package management system. To enable the new menu structure after an update, the user has to manually perform an action: Restart machine, re-login, restart fvwm. The preferred action is to choose "Window Manager Restart Fvwm2" since no login is needed then and even the windows survive. Question: How can I invoke an equivalent action as "Restart Fvwm2" from the command line or the package management system? The following command does not work (neither do similar ones): fvwm -c "Restart" [FVWM][SetupICCCM2]: <<ERROR>> another ICCCM 2.0 compliant WM is running, try -replace "-replace" is no option since one needs to log in again after calling it.

  I am running Windows 8, 64 bit and have SQL Server 2012 installed. I downloaded the client tools, looked in the directory for SQL Server Management Studio, and see it's there. When I try to run SQL Management Studio I receive the error message: "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall application". This problem just started. I have reinstalled the application and downloaded the service packs. The shortcut key shows the path but it still will not run.

  I'm using Iceweasel (un/rebranded Firefox) 3.5.9 on Debian (amd64). I want to use the "Furigana Injector" plugin. I installed it via the Tools - Add-ons menuitem (version 1.3), and restarted Firefox. Unfortunately, when I click the button, it only says: "The 'SimpleMecab' XPCOM component could not be loaded." in a dialog box, several dozen times (!). I found a Debian package "libmecab1", but installing it didn't help. Is there some "mecab" package I can install that will make this work?

  I'm having diffculties configuring 20 new Dell Vostro minis here. I set up one of them with my preferred OS, applications and settings, especially the Visual Effects Settings of Windows XP. I set them to best performance and deactivated everything else in the box. I copied this profile to Default User Profile and did sysprep -mini -reseal. After capturing this image and deploying it again, the desktop settings are correct except the visual effects settings. fading and everything else is reenabled for each new user which is created on the system. How do I preserve my settings from being overwritten by sysprep? thanks!

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and for some time I had to keep a downgraded PHP 5.2 package because I need to run Zend encrypted scripts. Recently I noticed that Zend released beta version of their loader (http://forums.zend.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=1365&start=80#p22073) so I updated to the native PHP 5.3 package, downloaded the .so file, added this to php.ini ;zend_extension=/etc/php5/ZendOptimizer.so zend_extension=/etc/php5/ZendGuardLoader.so zend_loader.enable=1 zend_loader.disable_licensing=0 zend_loader.obfuscation_level_support=3 and restarted the server. Now I am getting this error: Fatal error: Incompatible file format: The encoded file has format major ID 1, whereas the Loader expects 4 in ... on line 0 Do you by chance know an easy fix for this? Or should I downgrade back and wait till when they release something more stable?

  Being new to OpenSUSE (v.11.2) and the GNOME desktop, I am somewhat at a loss. The differences between installing applications on Windows (formerly XP & Windows for the last 15+ years) seem to be just different enough that I am having some difficulty. For instance, how do I determine what install package I would download? Then, how do I actually install a tar.gz file or rpm, or whatever? I tried updating the Flash driver for my FoxTabs addon in FireFox but got an error that the /tmp/ directory wasn't to be used to run media, or something to that affect. So, I thought I would try to figure out first how to determine what file package to download, then how to install. I'm not sure that I need an OpenSUSE for Dummies type of link, but something that explicitly details differences in everyday operations and corresponding equivalents between Windows and OpenSUSE/GNOME. I'm also looking for a good IRC chat client.

  I'm looking to buy a laptop with the following specs for a developer. The goal will be to have a development machine supplementing the devs desktop. During work hours the dev will be on a beefy desktop. For working while on the go: trains, client sites, code camps, it would be nice to have a machine which can run Visual Studio 2008 without needing to remote desktop into their primary machine. What do you think is the lowest cost laptop meeting this need? Here are the specs I have in mind: SSD drive 64GB-doesn't need to be huge, most data is stored on servers. Will need to fit Windows 7, IIS, SQL Server, and Visual Studio 2010. RAM-3GB processor =Pentium Core 2 duo Screen size = 14 inches. OS doesn't matter.   I have a Python 3 web app so mod_wsgi < 3.1 doesn't cut it for me. However, on my Ubuntu 9.10 installation there doesn't seem to be a package for mod_wsgi 3.1. Is there an alternative repository that has a package for mod_wsgi 3.1? There's a new Ubuntu release not so long from now, will it contain mod_wsgi 3.1? Some other distro ready with mod_wsgi 3.1 to recommend? Maybe my best bet is to compile it myself? From a quick google it looks like I only need the python and apache dev packages installed. Thanks!

• GAC locking problem when running deployment

  We have a NANT script that uses msbuild to compile our visual studio solutions and deploys the .dlls into the GAC. This works well on our integration/test servers as part of continuous integration, cruise control uses the NANT scripts and every time the dlls are put into the GAC without problem. On our local development machines, where we use subversion/vs.net etc. for development, frequently certain dlls do not make it to the GAC when we run the build. We think we have narrowed this down to visual studio and/or a plug in locking the GAC or the dlls for some reason. Strangely if we run the build a second time all the dlls make it to the GAC. We have added various iisreset's to the NANT script in the hope of releasing the lock but to no avail. Can anyone suggest a good approach to attack this problem? All the best

  This started a few days ago on a machine that has been running WIn 8.1 for over a month. I just finished a clean install of Windows 8.1 with a handful of apps like Dropbox and Office.   I'm installing gitolite from CentOS packages for my client. The package creates a gitolite user, which will be visible explicitly during a "git clone" operations. The client wants to use "git" and not "gitolite", in case we change to something more fancy later. I'm not very familiar with CentOS, so I don't want to try to build the package myself from source. I'm wondering if there's a way to do one of the following: Trick sshd into treating "git" as "gitolite". Somehow "alias" a new git username to be the same in all ways as the existing gitolite username (perhaps through some complex combinations of useradd). Rename the "gitolite" username to "git" without upsetting later yum update operations Something else that I hadn't thought of I'd appreciate detailed instructions or pointers.

  I would like to set a password and username for connecting to a server with SQL Management Studio 2008. I set up SQL Server 2008 Express on a customer's computer to host a DB used by an Access 2007 app. The customer should not be able to access the DB or connect with SQL Management Studio. How do I set up a login and remove any logins that allow a user to connect via Windows Authentication and without entering a username and password? I have not much experience with logins and controlling access.
