• How to Find Out Which Devices Are Supported By Solaris 11

In his update of Brian Leonard's original Taking Your First Steps With Oracle Solaris, Glynn Foster walks you through the most basic steps required to get a version of Oracle Solaris 11 operational: Installing Solaris (VirtualBox, bare metal, or multi-boot) Managing users (root role, sudo command) Managing services with SMF (svcs and svcadm) Connecting to the network (with SMF or manually via dladm and ipadm) Figuring out the directory structure Updating software (with the IPS GUI or the pkg command) Managing package repositories Creating and managing additional boot environments One of the things you'll have to consider as you install Solaris 11 on an x86 system is whether Solaris has the proper drivers for the devices on your system. In the section titled "Installing On Bare Metal as a Standalone System," Glynn shows you how to use the Device Driver utility that's included with the Graphical Installer. However, if you want to get that information before you start installing Solaris 11 on your x86 system, you can consult the x86 Device List that's part of the Oracle Solaris Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). Here's how: Open the Device List. Scroll down to the table. Open the "Select Release" pull-down menu and pick "Solaris 11 11/11." Move over to the "Select Device Type" pull-down menu, and pick the device type. Or "All." The table will list all the devices of that type that are supported by Solaris 11, including PCI ID and vendor. • How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • How can I reinstall XRandR without serious disruption to 12.04?

  This is the sequence that leads to xrandr going missing: Installed 12.04 on a system with a motherboard using the Intel G45 chipset and the E8400 Core 2 Duo and AMD Radeon HD 5450 video card. Installed fglrx when ubuntu prompted via Additional Drivers. Ran Catalyst (Administrative) to select multi-desktop and rebooted. Ran Catalyst (Administrative) to select Xinerama and rebooted. Answer yes to about 3 prompts that request to send bug reports to ubuntu. At this point Settings > Appearances no longer offers the widget that allows you to resize the Unity Launcher icons. Also Settings > Displays says randr extension is not present. BTW: This same sequence is repeatable, including the issues with the missing icon resizer and xrandr, so there is clearly bug fixing potential here. How can I get xrandr reinstalled without un-installing a large set of dependencies? I realize that if I un-install xrandr I will have the chance to re-install but the number of dependencies is large and so an un-install will cause many systems to be un-installed and I am afraid that will ruin Ubuntu 12.04. Hence, I'm looking for a more direct fix. I thought rebooting the .ISO disk and reinstalling would be a good fix but obviously not since this problem is repeatable.

• Asus G53SX How to use the recovery partition

  I am trying to use the recovery partition on my Asus G53SX laptop, but the instructions in the included booklet don't match up with what happens on the computer. It says press F9 during bootup and then press ENTER to select windows setup. Then select the language you want to recover, and so on. When I press F9 I end up in the boot manager and from there I can access safe mode and all these things. The closest thing I can find in this list is "Repair your computer" but this menu takes me to recovery points and backup images, none which are mentioned in the booklet. How can I use the recovery partition to restore my laptop to factory state?

  I want to write a shell script which will attach to a named tmux session, select a window (or pane) in that session and run a command in that selected window (or pane). How do I do this from a bash script? I know tmux new-window -n:mywindow 'exec something' allows you to send commands to a freshly created window. But I need something like tmux select-window -t:0 'my command' I suppose I could use send-keys but seems like their should be something that takes a command or list of commands that get run.

  I was reading a blog yesterday about the evils of SELECT *. The author pointed out that it's almost always a bad idea to use SELECT * for a query, but in the case of SQL Azure (or any cloud database, for that matter) it's especially bad, since you're paying for each transmission that comes down the line. A very good point indeed. This got me to thinking - shouldn't we treat ALL programming that way? In other words, wouldn't it make sense to pretend that we are paying for every chunk of data - a little less for a bit, a lot more for a BLOB or VARCHAR(MAX), that sort of thing? In effect, we really are paying for that. Which led me to the thought of Performance-Driven Development, or the act of programming with the goal of having the fastest code from the very outset. This isn't an original title, since a quick Bing-search shows me a couple of offerings from Forrester and a professional in Israel who already used that title, but the general idea I'm thinking of is assigning a "cost" to each code round-trip, be it network, storage, trip time and other variables, and then rewarding the developers that come up with the fastest code. I wonder what kind of throughput and round-trip times you could get if your developers were paid on a scale of how fast the application performed...   I'm using Windows 7 with ye good olde Windows 2000 style (I favor usability and space over fancy-pants aero and effects) and am looking for a way I can make the ALT-TAB-Control interactable with my mouse. I generally have many many windows open, and pressing tab or shift-tab over and over again begings to really frustrate me, if i want to reach a certain program. Of course, I could just select the program on my taskbar, but that takes even longer. I really like the way mac os x has its alt-tab menu - more or less exactly the same, but I can select the program with my mouse. Is there something like that for my environment?

• Restore Windows 7 bootloader after Windows 8 install

  I have installed Windows 8 onto a partition after Windows 7, and when I turn my PC on, Windows 8 basically loads completely, and then I get the option to choose my OS. If I select Windows 8, I go straight to the lock screen, if I select Windows 7, my computer completely restarts and then boots into 7. I want to use the Windows 7 installation DVD to restore the Windows 7 bootloader using the method described by the How To Geek but I am worried that if I do this, Windows 8 won't boot. Can anybody advise on whether or not this will work, and if not how can I go back to selecting the OS right after the BIOS loads?

• Unexpected SQL Server 2008 Performance Tip: Avoid local variables in WHERE clause

  Sometimes an application needs to have every last drop of performance it can get, others not so much. We’re in the process of converting some legacy Visual FoxPro data into SQL Server 2008 for an application and ran into a situation that required some performance tweaking. I figured the Making Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Fly session that Yavor Angelov (SQL Server Program Manager – Query Processing) presented at PDC 2009 last November would be a good place to start. I was right. One tip among the list of incredibly useful tips Yavor presented was “local variables are bad news for the Query Optimizer and they cause the Query Optimizer to guess”. What that means is you should be avoiding code like this in your stored procs even though it seems such an intuitively good idea. DECLARE @StartDate datetime SET @StartDate = '20091125' SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE OrderDate = @StartDate Instead you should be referencing the value directly in the WHERE clause so the Query Optimizer can create a better execution plan. SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE OrderDate = '20091125' My first thought about this one was we reference variables in the form of passed in parameters in WHERE clauses in many of our stored procs. Not to worry though because parameters ARE available to the Query Optimizer as it compiles the execution plan. I highly recommend checking out Yavor’s session for additional tips to help you squeeze every last drop of performance out of your queries. Have a day. :-|

• how do I import a targa sequence as a composition in after effects cs4 ?

  I am a complete n00b with After Effects now, but I want to achieve something basic. I have a sequence of TARGA(.tga) files named alphanumerically(name_0000, where 0000 is the frame). I want to import those as a composition. What I'm after is having each .tga file siting in the timeline in sequence. I tried File Import File, selected the first, then selected the last, holding Shift, and ticked sequence, but I cannot select Composition from that Dialog, I can only select Footage and I don't knwow why. Hints ?

  SQL Server 2012 introduces new analytical functions PERCENT_RANK(). This function returns relative standing of a value within a query result set or partition. It will be very difficult to explain this in words so I’d like to attempt to explain its function through a brief example. Instead of creating a new table, I will be using the AdventureWorks sample database as most developers use that for experiment purposes. • SSIS: Deploying OLAP cubes using C# script tasks and AMO

  As part of the continuing series on Building dynamic OLAP data marts on-the-fly, this blog entry will focus on how to automate the deployment of OLAP cubes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Analysis Services Management Objects (AMO). OLAP cube deployment is usually done using the Analysis Services Deployment Wizard. However, this option was dismissed for a variety of reasons. Firstly, invoking external processes from SSIS is fraught with problems as (a) it is not always possible to ensure SSIS waits for the external program to terminate; (b) we cannot log the outcome properly and (c) it is not always possible to control the server's configuration to ensure the executable works correctly. Another reason for rejecting the Deployment Wizard is that it requires the 'answers' to be written into four XML files. These XML files record the three things we need to change: the name of the server, the name of the OLAP database and the connection string to the data mart. Although it would be reasonably straight forward to change the content of the XML files programmatically, this adds another set of complication and level of obscurity to the overall process. When I first investigated the possibility of using C# to deploy a cube, I was surprised to find that there are no other blog entries about the topic. I can only assume everyone else is happy with the Deployment Wizard! SSIS "forgets" assembly references If you build your script task from scratch, you will have to remember how to overcome one of the major annoyances of working with SSIS script tasks: the forgetful nature of SSIS when it comes to assembly references. Basically, you can go through the process of adding an assembly reference using the Add Reference dialog, but when you close the script window, SSIS "forgets" the assembly reference so the script will not compile. After repeating the operation several times, you will find that SSIS only remembers the assembly reference when you specifically press the Save All icon in the script window. This problem is not unique to the AMO assembly and has certainly been a "feature" since SQL Server 2005, so I am not amazed it is still present in SQL Server 2008 R2! Sample Package So let's take a look at the sample SSIS package I have provided which can be downloaded from here: DeployOlapCubeExample.zip  Below is a screenshot after a successful run. Connection Managers The package has three connection managers: AsDatabaseDefinitionFile is a file connection manager pointing to the .asdatabase file you wish to deploy. Note that this can be found in the bin directory of you OLAP database project once you have clicked the "Build" button in Visual Studio TargetOlapServerCS is an Analysis Services connection manager which identifies both the deployment server and the target database name. SourceDataMart is an OLEDB connection manager pointing to the data mart which is to act as the source of data for your cube. This will be used to replace the connection string found in your .asdatabase file Once you have configured the connection managers, the sample should run and deploy your OLAP database in a few seconds. Of course, in a production environment, these connection managers would be associated with package configurations or set at runtime. When you run the sample, you should see that the script logs its activity to the output screen (see screenshot above). If you configure logging for the package, then these messages will also appear in your SSIS logging. Sample Code Walkthrough Next let's walk through the code. The first step is to parse the connection string provided by the TargetOlapServerCS connection manager and obtain the name of both the target OLAP server and also the name of the OLAP database. Note that the target database does not have to exist to be referenced in an AS connection manager, so I am using this as a convenient way to define both properties. We now connect to the server and check for the existence of the OLAP database. Basically this is a small chuck of XML which we need to wrap around the large .asdatabase file generated by the Visual Studio build process. // Start generating the main part of the XMLA command XmlDocument xmlaCommand = new XmlDocument(); xmlaCommand.LoadXml(string.Format("<Batch Transaction='false' xmlns='http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine'><Alter AllowCreate='true' ObjectExpansion='ExpandFull'><Object><DatabaseID>{0}</DatabaseID></Object><ObjectDefinition/></Alter></Batch>", olapDatabaseName));  Next we need to merge two XML files which we can do by simply using setting the InnerXml property of the ObjectDefinition node as follows: // load OLAP Database definition from .asdatabase file identified by connection manager XmlDocument olapCubeDef = new XmlDocument(); olapCubeDef.Load(Dts.Connections["AsDatabaseDefinitionFile"].ConnectionString); // merge the two XML files by obtain a reference to the ObjectDefinition node oaRootNode.InnerXml = olapCubeDef.InnerXml;   One hurdle I had to overcome was removing detritus from the .asdabase file left by the Visual Studio build. Through an iterative process, I found I needed to remove several nodes as they caused the deployment to fail. The XMLA error message read "Cannot set read-only node: CreatedTimestamp" or similar. In comparing the XMLA generated with by the Deployment Wizard with that generated by my code, these read-only nodes were missing, so clearly I just needed to strip them out. Again this is easily achieved using XPath to search for the relevant nodes and then replace the content of the node with the new name or connection string. If you would like the script to process the OLAP database, simply uncomment the lines in the vicinity of Process method. Of course, you can extend the script to perform your own custom processing and to even synchronize the database to a front-end server. • Enable: Asp.net connection pool monitoring with performance monitor

Intro: Im suspecting that an asp.net application is having some issues with the connection pool and that the pool is flooding from time to time. So to make sure, I want to monitor the connection pool. The problem: So I logged in to the asp.net server(The sql database is hosted on a different server) which hosts the website. Started performance monitor. But when I want to select 'Current # pooled and nonpooled connections', I have no instance to select. There fore I can't add it. Question How can I create/supply an instance so I can monitor the connection pool? Thanks in advance BHD

  Suppose you have a Proxy based Web Service using Oracle Service Bus. In a stage in the request pipeline,  you are using a Publish action to publish the incoming message to a JMS queue using a Business Service. What if the outbound transport provider throws an exception (outside of your pipeline)? Is your pipeline able to catch the error with an error handler?? This situation could occur because of a faulty connection, suspended queue, or some other reason. Here is the Request Pipeline in our simple test case. With an Error Handler added to the message flow containing a simple Log action. By default, the Publish action will invoke the service in a fire and forget fashion. Therefore any exception that occurs in the outbound transport will go unnoticed as shown in the following Invocation Trace. So what now? In a message flow, you can apply a Routing Options action to modify any or all of the following properties in the outbound request: URI, Quality of Service, Mode, Retry parameters, Message Priority. Now add the Routing Options action to the Request Action as shown below. Click the Routing Options to display its properties in the Properties View. Select the QoS option to set the Quality of Service element. Select Exactly Once to override the default setting, and Republish the project. The invocation will now block until the message is completely processed. Trying the same test case as earlier generates the following Invocation Trace showing that the Error Handler is now triggered.

• Adding nodes to MAAS server

  I was able to install MAAS server using ubuntu 12.04. Then boot up nodes from he PXE. Then installed maas-precise-x86-64-commissioning through pxe. Now the installation is done. but im unable to commission with the MAAS server. It does not show it as a node and neither im unable to add it manually and end up with following error. Also what is the default username password for maas-precise-x86-64-commissioning. Im unable to login. This error when adding node manually. • Achieving Zero Downtime Deployment

  I am trying to achieve zero downtime deployments so I can deploy less during off hours and more during "slower" hours - or anytime, in theory. My current setup, somewhat simplified: Web Server A (.NET App) Web Server B (.NET App) Database Server (SQL Server) My current deployment process: "Stop" the sites on both Web Server A and B Upgrade the database schema for the version of the app being deployed Update Web Server A Update Web Server B Bring everything back online Current Problem This leads to a small amount of downtime each month - about 30 mins. I do this during off hours, so it isn't a huge problem - but it is something I'd like to get away from. Also - there is no way to really go 'back'. I don't generally make rollback DB scripts - only upgrade scripts. Leveraging The Load Balancer I'd love to be able to upgrade one Web Server at a time. Take Web Server A out of the load balancer, upgrade it, put it back online, then repeat for Web Server B. The problem is the database. Each version of my software will need to execute against a different version of the database - so I am sort of "stuck". Possible Solution A current solution I am considering is adopting the following rules: Never delete a database table. Never delete a database column. Never rename a database column. Never reorder a column. Every stored procedure must be versioned. Meaning - 'spFindAllThings' will become 'spFindAllThings_2' when it is edited. Then it becomes 'spFindAllThings_3' when edited again. Same rule applies to views. While, this seems a bit extreme - I think it solves the problem. Each version of the application will be hitting the DB in a non breaking way. The code expects certain results from the views/stored procedures - and this keeps that 'contract' valid. The problem is - it just seeps sloppy. I know I can clean up old stored procedures after the app is deployed for awhile, but it just feels dirty. Also - it depends on all of the developers following these rule, which will mostly happen, but I imagine someone will make a mistake. Finally - My Question Is this sloppy or hacky? Is anybody else doing it this way? How are other people solving this problem?

• Tale of an Encrypted SSIS Package in msdb and a Lost Password

    Yesterday a Developer at work asked for a copy of an SSIS package in Production so he could work on it (please, dear Reader – withhold judgment on Source Control – I know!). I logged on to the SSIS instance, and when I went to export the package… Oops. I didn’t have that password. The DBA who uploaded the package to Production is long gone; my fellow DBA had no idea either - and the Devs returned a cricket sound when queried. So I posed the obligatory question on #SQLHelp and a bunch of folks jumped in – some to help and some to make fun of me (thanks, @SQLSoldier @crummel4 @maryarcia and @sqljoe). I tried their suggestions to no avail…even ran some queries to see if I could figure out how to extract the package XML from the system tables in msdb:   SELECT CAST(CAST(p.packagedata AS varbinary(max)) AS varchar(max)) FROM msdb.dbo.sysssispackages p WHERE p.name = 'LePackage'   This just returned a bunch of XML with encrypted data on it:  I knew there was a job in SQL Agent scheduled to execute the package, and when I tried to look at details on the job step I got the following: Not very helpful. The password had to be saved somewhere, but where??   Many a times you may need to copy the "Format" in Word. The "Copy Format" feature lets you quickly and easily "copy" all the formatting characteristics from one group of selected text to another. This is helpful when you have several headings that you want consistent formatting. Here are steps on how to Copy Formatting: 1. Select, or highlight, the item of text containing the format you wish to copy. 2. Office 2003 - Click on the Format Painter Button in the Standard Toolbar (looks like Paintbrush). Office 2007 - Format Painter Button is located on the Home tab (looks like a Paintbrush). Office 2003 - An I-beam with a small cross to the left will appear as you move your mouse. Office 2007 - An I-beam with a small paintbrush will appear as you move your mouse. 3. Select the text you wish to copy the formatting to. 4. Formatting of the selected text will automatically change. For multiple formatting changes, double-click on the Format Painter button in Step 2. Remember, you'll have to click it again to deselect it or press Esc.

• MS Access: Why can I no longer right-click to add a hyperlink?

  I've been working in an MS Access system for a while now. It's a form system where users enter data, add links, contacts etc. Pretty simple. On the form is a hyperlink field. For months I could right-click the field, and from the popup context menu select Hyperlink Add a hyperlink (something like that). This would allow me to browse to a network location, select a folder, click okay, and have the path automatically added to the field. Then it stopped working. It works fine for everyrone else but not me. What's stranger, if I go to another machine and login, I get the functionality back. Any ideas?
