  • Request-local storage in ASP.NET (accessible to the code from IHttpModule implementation)

    I need to have some object hanging around between two events I'm interested in: PreRequestHandlerExecute (where I create an instance of my object and want to save it) and PostRequestHandlerExecute (where I want to get to the object). After the second event the object is not needed for my purposes and should be discarded either by storage or my explicit action. So the ideal context where my object should be stored is per request (with guaranteed no sharing issues when different threads are serving requests... or processes/servers :) ) Take into account that actual implementation I can do is being made from a HttpModule and is supposed to be a pluggable solution for already written web apps (so the option to provide some state using static/instance variables in Global.asax doesn't look good - I will have to modify Global.asax on every web application). Cache seems to be too broad for this use. I tried to see whether httpContext.Application (of type HttpApplicationState) is good for me or not, but cannot get whether it is exactly per HttpApplication instance or not (AFAIK you can have several instances of HttpApplications used on different threads and therefore serving several requests simultaneously - then using storage shared between threads will not work correctly; otherwise I would use it because one HttpApplication instance serves exactly one request at a time). Something could be done with storing state on the HttpModule instances if I know for sure that it's exactly bound 1-to-1 with every HttpApplication instance running (but again I need a proof that HttpApplication instance is 1-to-1 with my HttpModule's instance). Any valuable and reputable links on these topics are much appreciated... Would be great to find something particularly well-suited for per request situation (because otherwise I may end up with something ulgy... probably either some 'broader' scoped storage and some hacks to have different keys in the storage for different requests, OR using a thread-local thing and in this way commit to the theory that IIS/ASP.NET will not ever serve first event from one thread and the second event from the other thread and so on)

  • Ruby: Why is Array.sort slow for large objects?

    A colleague needed to sort an array of ActiveRecord objects in a Rails app. He tried the obvious Array.sort! but it seemed surprisingly slow, taking 32s for an array of 3700 objects. So just in case it was these big fat objects slowing things down, he reimplemented the sort by sorting an array of small objects, then reordering the original array of ActiveRecord objects to match - as shown in the code below. Tada! The sort now takes 700ms. That really surprised me. Does Ruby's sort method end up copying objects about the place rather than just references? However I just found out that I might be just working with access for a couple of weeks (macros and whatnot). Can someone just give me a general rundown on how to create and use VB in access. What I mean is how do tables refer to themselves (as objects? as what name?) how to run queries through vb and such. thanks all.

  • Can someone please explain to me the basic function of Intents in the Android OS?

    I'm new to programming applications for the Android OS. As far as general architecture of the OS goes, I understand that processes are implemented as Linux processes and that each one is sandboxed. However, I'm utterly confused on the IPCs and syscalls (if any) used. I know that the IBinder is a form of this; parcels are sent back and forth between processes and Bundles are array forms of parcels (?). But even that is still unfamiliar to me. Same with Intents. All in all, I don't understand what kinds of IPCs are implemented and how. Could someone briefly explain to me the specific methods used by user level applications in Android OS to communicate with each other and the OS? I've done kernel programming and played with various IPCs in Linux (Ubuntu and Debian) so it would help immensely if this was all explained in relation to what I'm familiar with...   • Python 2.6 and 3.1.1, earlier version compatibility

    I ordered three books to start teaching myself Python - a beginning programming book, a computer science book that uses Python for all of its code references, and a book on Python network programming. Unfortunately, I was a little too quick on ordering them, because I hadn't noticed the version differences. The beginner book is for python 3.1, the CS book is Python 2.3, and the last is Python 2.6. The CS book is also oriented towards beginners. My question is, will the different versions be too different at this level for me to effectively use all three, or will I likely be able to get by learning from the 3.1 beginners book and then sort of teach myself from the 2.3 CS book, and be able to comprehend 2.6 code? That probably didn't make sense. I hope it did.

    Hello, I am looking for a book on advanced C programming that: Teaches how to effectively express one's solution in C when one already knows the language in depth. Shows some common design idioms expressed in C, like encapsulation, modularity and that kind of thing. Is example-driven with a lot of good-quality code. I already know the language itself so books like otherwise wonderful "Expert C Programming" by Peter van der Linden is not really what i am looking for. What i need is a book on how to express my design in C, what are the common idioms, best practices, etc. I would also like to note that i am primarily interested in C, not C++, C#, Objective-C or any other languages inspired by C-like syntax. Also, I come from a non CS background (no formal degree) Recently, while being interviewed for a job, I was asked about implementing a queue using a stack. I fumbled and wan't able to answer the question. After, the interview I could do it(had to spend some time). I have learnt (and think that I know it well) basic algorithms in datastructures using the book Data Structures: A Pseudocode Approach with C - Richard F. Gilberg (Author) . I want to know about sites/ books which have such questions along with answers. I think this will allow me to develop my CS specific problem solving skills. Any help is appreciated.     i have been programming in C/C++ for my academic courses a lot and was under the impression i had a pretty good grasp of it. but lately i had to work in a bluetooth application that had a server and client implementation in a Linux box and an embedded system. i learned bluez bluetooth API, socket/network programming and coded it. however i ran into a lot of problems with memory leaks and segmentation faults and other memory related errors along the way.as the code grew more complex i all but lost control of the pointers and threads and sockets. this got me wondering that i had a lot to learn that they didn't say in the basic C/C++ books. so i wanted to ask for the resources that are available that'll help be code better in a professional way in C/C++ .especially for the Linux/Mac environment (gcc compiler).

  • Call ASP.NET 2.0 Server side code from Javascript

    I'm struggling with this for the past 3 days. I need to call asp.net serverside code from Javascript when the user closes the browser. I'm using the following code to accomplish this. In my asp.net form I have various validation controls. Even if there are some validation errors, When I close the form the server side code works perfectly in my development box(windows 7). But the same code doesnt work in my production environment(windows server). Does it have something to do with the Validation summary or Validation controls. The button control has Causes validation set to false. So even if there is a validation error still my form will post back. Am I correct? I suspect the form is not getting post back to the server when there is a validation error. But i'm disabling all the validation controls in the javascript before calling the button click event. Can someone throw some light on this issue.   • Ridiculously Simple Erlang Question

    Read (skimmed enough to get coding) through Erlang Programming and Programming Erlang. One question, which is as simple as it sounds: If you have a process Pid1 on machine m1 and a billion million messages are sent to Pid1, are messages handled in parallel by that process (I get the impression no) and is there any guarantee of order when processing messages? ie. Received in order sent? Coming from the whole C/Thread pools/Shared State background ... I want to get this concrete. I understand distributing an application, but want to ensure the 'raw bones' are what I expect before building processes and distributing workload. Also, am I right in thinking the whole world is currently flicking through Erlang texts ;)

  • How do I get my Flash CS4 buttons to direct the user to another URL?

    My apologies if this has been fully addressed before, but I've read through several other threads and still can't seem to get my file to work. My actionscript code is at the bottom of this message. I am advancing to the third and final year of my computer science degree this September and I was thinking about spending some time during the summer to watch a couple of lectures, in order to improve my understanding of algorithms, complexity, programming, software engineering, etc. Now I don't have infinite time to spend so I can't watch all of the lectures from all of the universities so I was wondering if you could suggest me which sets to watch from each one (something like "Algorithms from MIT", "Programming from Yale", etc).

  • How can I stop a movie (from current frame) playing when I click on next frame - FLASH CS4?

    I have four movie clips (.f4v) in 4 frames in a movie with watch buttons.. This movie has them been imported into a main movie container that has next and previous buttons. However if i play a movie then hit next frame, the movie continues to play in the background. How can I shop this? The code below shows one of the actionscripts for a movie clip and then the main actionscript in the main movie. I am a flash newbie, so all help appreciated.   • Is Python appropriate for algorithms focused on scientific computing?

    My interests in programming lie mainly in algorithms, and lately I have seen many reputable researchers write a lot of their code in python. How easy and convenient is python for scientific computing? Does it have a library of algorithms that compares to matlab's? Is Python a scripting language or does it compile? Is it a great language for prototyping an algorithm? How long would it take me to learn enough of it to be productive provided I know C well and OO programming somewhat? Is it OO based? Sorry for the condensed format of questions, but I'm very curious and was hoping a more experienced programmer could help me out.

When I click on one of the links all I get inside of the shadowbox is "undefined". As I am sure you can see in my code, I am still very new to this, so any help or pointers would be appreciated. I'm talking about methods to fast-hide\camouflage not job related web pages on your desktop when boss arrives like a ghost\ninja behind your shoulders. I know how much can be frustrating, programming hard for ten hours and then been caught by your boss watching XKCD during a 2 minutes break. I think the most common anti boss trick is the evergreen CTRL+TAB, but you have to be fast and your left hand has to be near the keyboard. I saw pitch black brightness on Lcd (how can you pretend to program on that?) or custom sized browser to fit a little space just below the IDE. My favourite one at the moment is using fire gesture plugin with FF; with a micro gesture you can hide FF to your tray in a blink of an eye. Do you have any trick to share?

For instance, I've known a programmer who dabbled in speed because they believed it increased their ability to focus on programming, though happily they're clean now and quite honest about the whole experience.     I am having issues adding an image across a view while moving finger across the screen. Currently it is adding the image multiple times but squeezing them too close together and not really following my touch. EDIT: What I want: After taking or choosing an image, the user can then select another image from a list.   • Details View and integration with TinyMCE <%@ Page validateRequest="false" %>

    I use TinyMCE in a DetailView in in EDIT MODE. I would like to know if there is a solution which can prevent Request Validation to trigger an error WITHOUT USING <%@ Page validateRequest="false" %> for my page. The only way I found out at the moment is to encode TextBox used by TinyMCE using option: "xml" tinyMCE.init({ encoding: "xml", In this way Request Validation does not trigger error but at the time to read the data in the TextBox the result it is Encoded. I also tried to Decode on PageLoad the content of the TextBox using this code myTextBox.Text = HttpUtility.HtmlDecode(myTextBox.Text) But the result is not as expected, so I can visualize it just Encoded text. Any Ideas? Thanks UPDATE I found a solution to my problem. I added in _DataBound event for the DetailsView this code TextBox myContentAuthor = (TextBox)uxAuthorListDetailsView.FindControl("uxContentAuthorInput"); myContentAuthor.Text = HttpUtility.HtmlDecode(myContentAuthor.Text); So on DataBound event, (should work even on post back) the content will be decodene for textbox tinymce. Here how should work: 01 - TinyMCE ESCAPE data inserted in textbox using function encoding: "xml", 02 - Data has been stored as ESCAPED 03 - To read the data and add its content to a TextBox where apply TinyMCE use in DATABOUND EVENT for DetailView and HttpUtility.HtmlDecode (so it will look decoded) 04 - You can modify content in the textbox in edit mode. On post back TinyMCE will encoded again using encoding: "xml" an so on Hope guys can help some one else. But please give me your comment on this solution thanks! Mybe you come up with more elegant solution! :-)

  • Calling jQuery method from onClick attribute in HTML

    I am relatively new to implementing JQuery throughout an entire system, and I am enjoying the opportunity. I have come across one issue I would love to find the correct resolve for. Here is a simple case example of what I want to do: I have a button on a page, and on the click event I want to call a jquery function I have defined. Here is the code I have used to define my method (Page.js): (function($) { $.fn.MessageBox = function(msg) { alert(msg); }; }); And here is my HTML page: <HTML> <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="C:\Sandpit\jQueryTest\jquery-1.3.2.js"></script> <script language="javascript" src="Page.js"></script> </head> <body> <div class="Title">Welcome!</div> <input type="button" value="ahaha" onclick="$().MessageBox('msg');" /> </body> </HTML> (The above code displays the button, but clicking does nothing.) I am aware I could add the click event in the document ready event, however it seems more maintainable to put events in the HTML element instead. However I have not found a way to do this. Is there a way to call a jquery function on a button element (or any input element)? Or is there a better way to do this? Thanks

  • Issuing native system commands in Scala

    I want to issue a native system command from a Scala program, and perhaps trap the output. ("ls" comes to mind. There may be other ways to get directory information without issuing the command, but that's beside the point of my question.) It would correspond to os.system(...) in Python. I've looked in "Programming in Scala". I've looked in O'Reilly's "Programming Scala". I've Googled several combinations of terms. No luck yet. Can someone out there give me an example, or point me at a resource where I can find an example?
