• How do you monitor the health of a mirrored disk in Windows?

  I have a Mirrored Dynamic disk on my Windows 2003 Server. How do you monitor the health of the volume? Is there a way to have the server send an email when there is an issue with the volume? Is there a way to have the server run S.M.A.R.T. tests? EDIT: Nothing says WTF like logging into a client server, running DISKPART LIST VOLUME and seeing this.   I am trying to follow the instructions in this article to create a custom certificate to support SSL on a web server. I'm stick on the following step: Click on Personal – All Tasks – Advanced Operations – Create Custom request The problem is that on the web server (Windows Server 2003 R2) I don't have an "Advanced Operations" option under "All Tasks". I do on my desktop machine (Windows 7), but not on the server. All the documentation I can find indicates that it should be available on WS-2003-R2, but it just isn't. Note: I'm going through this manual process because I need to specify a alternate host names in the CSR, which you can't do through the IIS 6.0 console certificate managment functionality. Any suggestions for how to make this option show up?

• Help needed setting up nginx to serve static files.

  Hi Guys, I'm trying to setup nginx to serve static files. Basically all I need is to have http://mydomain.com/site_media/ point to /var/django/myproject/site_media. I have tried so many configurations and when I test it I always get a 404 error for static files. Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong or how I should be setting this up?   DETAILS I'm not familiar with server administration and am trying to find the name of a particular service offered by a Japanese website provider. The service is for a dedicated server. • Volume Shadow Copy based backup that works with TrueCrypt?

  I have enabled whole-drive encryption on my external drive to comply with my company's requirements about data security. I want to be able to make a backup of files on the drive, even while they're in use. Is there any program out there that uses Volume Shadow Copy for backup and also works with a TrueCrypt encrypted drive? I have tried Windows Backup and Macrium Reflect and both act like the drive isn't connected, even though TrueCrypt has mounted it. It would be really nice if there was something that was free, but in order for that to work, it also has to work for commercial purposes since this is my company laptop I'm trying to backup.

• Anonymous Login attemps from IPs all over Asia, how do I stop them from being able to do this?

  We had a successful hack attempt from Russia and one of our servers was used as a staging ground for further attacks, actually somehow they managed to get access to a Windows account called 'services'. I took that server offline as it was our SMTP server and no longer need it (3rd party system in place now). Now some of our other servers are having these ANONYMOUS LOGIN attempts in the Event Viewer that have IP addresses coming from China, Romania, Italy (I guess there's some Europe in there too)... I don't know what these people want but they just keep hitting the server. How can I prevent this? I don't want our servers compromised again, last time our host took our entire hardware node off of the network because it was attacking other systems, causing our services to go down which is really bad. How can I prevent these strange IP addresses from trying to access my servers? They are Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 'containers' (virtual machines) running on a Parallels Virtuozzo HW node, if that makes a difference. I can configure each machine individually as if it were it's own server of course... UPDATE: New login attempts still happening, now these ones are tracing back to Ukraine... • IIS 7 and ASP.NET State Service Configuration

  We have 2 web servers load balanced and we wanted to get away from sticky sessions for obvious reasons. Our attempted approach is to use the ASP.NET State service on one of the boxes to store the session state for both. I realize that it's best to have a server dedicated to storing sessions but we don't have the resources for that. I've followed these instructions to no avail. The session still isn't being shared between the two servers. I'm not receiving any errors. I have the same machine key for both servers, and I've set the application ID to a unique value that matches between the two servers. Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this issue? Update: I turned on the session state service on my local machine and pointed both servers to the ip address on my local machine and it worked as expected. The session was shared between both servers. This leads me to believe that the problem might be that I'm not using a standalone server as my state service. Perhaps the problem is because I am using the ip address 127.0.0.1 on one server and then using a different ip address on the other server. Unfortunately when I try to use the network ip address as opposed to localhost the connection doesn't seem to work from the host server. Any insight on whether my suspicions are correct would be appreciated.

• Win2008 - restrict VPN user permissions

  Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Foundations file server with no AD, only workgroup sharing some folders, and now a RRAS server. Shared folders are open to everyone in the office (XPs and Sevens) without accounts/passwords, but I was thinking about partially limiting access to the new "VPNuser" account. I'm new to Windows Server and its permissions settings: I thought about denying access to vpnuser through NTFS rights in some folders. It doesn't work, but now I'm guessing that the vpnuser is not considered as a logged user (doesn't appear as such) and is considered a "guest", like the rest of people connecting in the office. • While using an ntfs smb share for mac users, do symbolic links and extended attributes work?

  We have a majority of mac users but we'd rather support their file sharing using a Windows server with an ntfs drive, or at least a Linux server with ext3. We've had trouble, much trouble, utilizing the OS X server software and after the years are now looking to abandon it. What's mostly holding us back is the fact that the mac users very often utilize symbolic links and other special features that exist for an HFS+ partition. The shared locations are mostly primary storage and not just used as an archive storage location. While there is an option to create symbolic links under ntfs, I'm curious if there is anything I need to look out for if I were to move the files over to a new partition that's hosted from a Windows server from the HFS+ partition; in addition, how well creating a symbolic link from a mac might work. I am also worried about windows backup software and if it will ruin these special sym links, and how placing permissions on sub-folders will work. Alternatively I could remotely backup the files using a mac and Bru, nonetheless I still want to get away from mac server for hosting the shares.

The educational pricing for Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 is irresistible as a managed anti-malware solution, but it requires System Center Configuration Manager 2007. I know best practice is not to run System Center Configuration Manager on a domain controller, but it's the only server I have to work with. Will installing SCCM on a domain controller cause problems? What conflicts might I need to take into account when planning deployment?

• IP address times out

  I'm running a dedicated server with a couple of game servers running on 4 different IP addresses. The most network-heavy server times out a few times during peak hours and all other communication (FTP/SSH) through the same IP also briefly times out. Other servers using other IPs are fine and unaffected as well as FTP/SSH using other IPs. The server is running Debian 6. What causes this, and is there anything I can do?

In the past that has been sufficient, but as traffic has grown I have begun to need more power and storage space. I have a second machine, and have installed Ubuntu Server Edition on it. • SSRS Errors "Use Local", even though I am

  I am at a loss. I posted this on SO, but think this is probably a better place. I have searched high and low and don't know what to do. I am running SQL Server Web Edition on Server 2008, which only supports local databases. I am trying to connect to localhost, but when I test my connection, I get this error. The feature: "The edition of Reporting Services that you are using requires that you use local SQL Server relational databases for report data sources and the report server database." is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. The DB was upgraded from SQL Express and when I select @@version, it says it's Web Edition. I've tried rebooting and that seemed to fix it, but only for a little while.

• Problem accessing MICROSOFT##SSEE database (Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16.)

  After an unexpected server shutdown due to a power failure, I can no longer connect to the internal windows database MICROSOFT##SSEE which is hosting Central Admin for my SBS 2008 server. The log shows: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. [CLIENT: <named pipe>] I've tried to connect using the SQL Management studio (connecting to .pipemssql$microsoft##sseesqlquery) but no luck. The SQL Server Configuration Manager doesn't show a entry for 'Protocols for MICROSOFT##SSEE' (but shows it for 2 other database hosted on the same SQL server 2005 Express edition. I have tried to restore the master.ldf and mastlog.log files from a backup, but the issue persists.

  When installing MS SQL Server 2008, one needs to associate a service account with the installation (possibly even several accounts, one for the SQL Server Agent, one for Analysis Services, ..., but let's leave that for the case of simplicity). The service account may be local account, or a Windows domain account. If a domain account is used: Can MSSQL start, if connectivity to the domain controllers is temporarily down? If the answer is yes: Should each DBMS instance on each server have a separate account, or does it make sense to use a particular "MSSQL" domain account on all MSSQL-installations in the organization? If separate accounts are used for each instance on each server: Does it make sense to create a special MSSQL security group in the domain and place all the MSSQL service accounts in that group, perhaps to ease replication, etc? Is there a common, generally accepted naming convention for MSSQL service account(s)?

• Exchange 2010 user not receiving mail from another user

  I have an Outlook 2010 user who can't receive email from another Outlook 2010 user. They are both in the same mailbox server in the same network. They can both send and receive email to anyone else in the organization. One just can't receive from the other. It's very strange. Exchange server was recently migrated from 2007 to 2010 but one of the users described is a new hire which was created on the 2010 server. I have other new hires created on the 2010 server that work fine. I tried having the user send from OWA and it still doesn't get through. What else can I do to troubleshoot this issue? Thank you.

• "Service Unavailable" when browsing to static HTML page in non-application IIS website on Windows 2003 (possibly SharePoint WSS 2.0 related?)

  Background: My client has an old Pentium III Windows 2003 server whose 16/36 GB disks are dying. On it he has a database-driven web site and email application that needs further customization by a developer (me). First we need to get it working on the new server. The original developer is no longer available to provide a system setup guide. So my client got a tech who imaged the old drives over to the new server and managed to get it booting. But the IIS-driven site no longer works. In fact it seems that IIS itself does not work. Problem: Service Unavailable when attempting to browse from the server itself to the URL for a local Web Site called test which I setup in IIS to serve a single static index.htm file. This I did to isolate the problem, and eliminate the client's application from the equation. The site is setup on port 80 with the host header "test.myclientsdomain.com", and I used the etc\hosts file to point that host at the local IP. I know the host entry took effect because I can ping it. When doing an iisreset, I get: Attempting start... Restart attempt failed. IIS Admin Service or a service dependent on IIS Admin is not active. It most likely failed to start, which may mean that it's disabled. Despite this message, the services all stay in the Started state. The only relevant System event logs I found are: Event Type: Error Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1002 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:04:47 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: Application pool 'DefaultAppPool' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool. Event Type: Error Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1039 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:13:12 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' reported a failure. The process id was '5636'. The data field contains the error number. Data: 0000: 7e 00 07 80 ~.. And one Application event log: Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Event Category: None Event ID: 1000 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:34:04 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: #50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on ALPHA2\SharePoint. Check the database connection information and make sure that the database server is running. That last log tells me that the tech may have initially tried to have both the old and the new server running, by renaming the new server from ALPHA1 to ALPHA2. And perhaps SharePoint grabbed onto that change, and now can't tell that the machine name has been switched back to the old ALPHA1. But why would SharePoint interfere with a static IIS web site serving a single HTML file? The test site is not even within an Application pool (I clicked the Remove button.) What I have tried/eliminated: No relevant services seem to be disabled: IIS Admin, WWW Publishing, Sharepoint Timer Giving Full Control to All Users/Everyone on the c:\inetpub\test folder serving my test site. I can connect to and query the local SharePoint config database (ALPHA1\SHAREPOINT\STS_CONFIG) from SSMS. But when I try to do stsadm -o setconfigdb -connect -databaseserver ALPHA1\SHAREPOINT it tells me The SharePoint admininstration port does not exist. Please use stsadm.exe to create it. And when I do that, using the port 9487 specified in the IIS SharePoint Admin site config, it tells me the port is already in use. Needless to say, simply browsing to the admin site gives me a similar error about being unable to reach the config database. I didn't want to go further down the SharePoint path as it may be completed unrelated to my IIS issue, and I don't even know yet if SharePoint is required for this application to work. The app itself is ASP.Net/C#/Silverlight and a little MS Word integration (maybe that's where the SharePoint stuff comes in.)

• Do I need a hardware firewall for Win 2003?

  We have had a Win 2003 server at a co-lo for a while. It is used as a web server and has a very cheap hardware firewall between it and the internet. Ports 3389 and 80 are the only ones forwarded to the server. I am doing some upgrading and wondering if I really need the firewall. Are there any drawbacks to just using the Win 2003 built in firewall to make sure only traffic on 3389 and 80 get through?

• What happens if I run caspol.exe multiple times?

  Hi there! Caspol.exe is used to modify security policy for the machine policy level, the user policy level, and the enterprise policy level. What I use it for, is setting up av trust between the client and an area on some server. I went through the scripts on the server, and found an interesting script that sets up full trust via caspol between a client in one zone, and an application on the server. That script has been running every day, for every logon, since it was implemented. Can someone tell me the consequences? I guess there is about 500 trusts between the client computer and the server, all which points to the same thing.

Can anybody please suggest me how to setup this network, what software I need to install in both physical machine and vm, what kind of network connectivity should be there between vmware guest and host machine? EDIT: I deliberately don't want to connect the VM with internet. The host will work more of a gateway of the VPN connection for the VM.

• I cannot connect to home server after a few hours

  I have an old PC and I decided to revive it. A LAMP (for my own use) and a P2P server (torrent and e2dk). My old PC is an AMD Athlon XP (1400 MHz) with 384 Mb of RAM First of all I installed Ubuntu Server 11.10, SSH, FTP, SAMBA and LAMP. With this configuration my home server works well, with no problem. Then I went to the P2P server and I tried rTorrent and then uTorrent Server Alpha. And here is my problem. After a few hours (maybe 10 hours, or maybe 30 hours) with the torrent app running (rTorrent or uTorrent) I lose the connection to my home server. That is, I cannot access via ssh, I cannot access the apache server, etc. but I can ping the home server. It seems that the server freezes and all I can do is reboot the server physically. So, I have two questions: What is the problem? and How can I solve it?

• 2012 R2 services will not start after promotion to Domain Controller

  Having a peculiar issue promoting a Windows 2012 R2 server in a domain at 2003 domain/forest functional level. Built a new 2012 R2 server, added the following software (labtech, appassure, eset A/V, & Teamviewer). It activated and appeared to be working fine. I added the Active Directory Domain Services role, and completed the configuration (Domain/Forest Prep, and DC promotion). All appeared to go well. I rebooted the server, and that's where the peculiar stuff began. I noticed the server indicated it needed activated again; but would not accept the key. I verified the key was good. That's when I noticed the Software Protection service (as well as many other core services - Base Filtering engine, DHCP client, firewall, etc) would not start. The error message for all of them was "Access Denied". I called MS, and they wanted to troubleshoot at a service level. Their fix was to use procmon and identify the resource that needed permissions (registry key, file or folder) and add "everyone" with full control). That got the services to start; but the problem re-appeared after a reboot. Thinking the issue might have been with the anti-virus package during the promotion process, I rebuilt the DCs from scratch and removed the metadata from AD (as I could not demote the machines "rpc server unavailble"). I tried to promote the newly built machines again. The only changes to the brand new machines being critical updates. Again the promotion appeared to work fine; but upon reboot (and a long wait to allow replication to occur) similar problems began to re-appear. I have verified that the schema updates are correct (schema version is 69 - for Windows 2012 R2). I am not finding much about this issue through my own searches, so I thought I would post this to see if anyone else has seen anything similar...
