  • Can't install any Linux distro

    I have been trying to install Ubuntu on my step-son's netbook and I checked and his hard disk seems to be failing and i keep getting an error message that Ubuntu is unable to install due to hard disk failure. I was wondering how and if it is possible to install Ubuntu on this hard disk without it giving me an error message. I have tried the alternate install disk image and the regular desktop image and get basically the same error message. Is there a way to somehow override this and get it installed

  • Software Architecture Analysis Method (SAAM)

    Software Architecture Analysis Method (SAAM) is a methodology used to determine how specific application quality attributes were achieved and how possible changes in the future will affect quality attributes based on hypothetical cases studies. Common quality attributes that can be utilized by this methodology include modifiability, robustness, portability, and extensibility. Quality Attribute: Application Modifiability The Modifiability quality attribute refers to how easy it changing the system in the future will be. This to me is a very open-ended attribute because a business could decide to transform a Point of Sale (POS) system in to a Lead Tracking system overnight. (Yes, this did actually happen to me) In order for SAAM to be properly applied for checking this attribute specific hypothetical case studies need to be created and review for the modifiability attribute due to the fact that various scenarios would return various results based on the amount of changes. In the case of the POS change out a payment gateway or adding an additional payment would have scored very high in comparison to changing the system over to a lead management system. I personally would evaluate this quality attribute based on the S.O.I.L.D Principles of software design. I have found from my experience the use of S.O.I.L.D in software design allows for the adoption of changes within a system. Quality Attribute: Application Robustness The Robustness quality attribute refers to how an application handles the unexpected. The unexpected can be defined but is not limited to anything not anticipated in the originating design of the system. For example: Bad Data, Limited to no network connectivity, invalid permissions, or any unexpected application exceptions. I would personally evaluate this quality attribute based on how the system handled the exceptions. Robustness Considerations Did the system stop or did it handle the unexpected error? Did the system log the unexpected error for future debugging? What message did the user receive about the error? Quality Attribute: Application Portability The Portability quality attribute refers to the ease of porting an application to run in a new operating system or device. For example, It is much easier to alter an ASP.net website to be accessible by a PC, Mac, IPhone, Android Phone, Mini PC, or Table in comparison to desktop application written in VB.net because a lot more work would be involved to get the desktop app to the point where it would be viable to port the application over to the various environments and devices. I would personally evaluate this quality attribute based on each new environment for which the hypothetical case study identifies. I would pay particular attention to the following items. Portability Considerations Hardware Dependencies Operating System Dependencies Data Source Dependencies Network Dependencies and Availabilities  Quality Attribute: Application Extensibility The Extensibility quality attribute refers to the ease of adding new features to an existing application without impacting existing functionality. I would personally evaluate this quality attribute based on each new environment for the following Extensibility  Considerations Hard coded Variables versus Configurable variables Application Documentation (External Documents and Codebase Documentation.)   • Do logins by the gdm (or lightdm) user in auth.log mean my system is breached?

    Please look at this auth.log (from Ubuntu 14.04) I have provided and tell me who this gdm user is and why there are all these unauthenticated logins? I am freaked out; please help!   • Bricscad V12 on ubuntu 11.10!

    i tried to install bricscad from the deb file but is for 32bit systems.So i had problems and i downloaded the .tgz file and ran tar -xvf and i was in the directory /opt/bricsys/bricscad/v12 So i managed to run bricscad with the command sudo sh bricscad.sh in the directory this.So my question is, do you have any idea of how to make a launcher or smthing so i can run the program from an easier way?I cannot find it in dash(unity) or in the desktop. Any help will be great! Thanks

  • Homepage not showing on Google

    About six weeks ago my homepage (mayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) disappeared from the google organic search for "kayaking pembrokeshire" despite it having been number 2 within a few weeks of it's launch last summer. My previous site (www.mikemayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) had been 2nd for about six years and has 301 redirects for all pages to the new site. Google toolbar still rates the homepage as 3/10 and the domain is still showing in search results, just not the homepage. A little research suggests that this is most likely to be due to an issue with google treating two pages as identical content (one with www. and one with not) since the changes in their algorithms around that time and that the way to fix this is to add some code somewhere. This makes sense to me as my print advertising doesn't have the www part of the address. I have cpanel access but a limited knowledge on web coding, having picked things up as I've gone along and paid for designers etc., when needed. Would someone be able to let me know where I have to go to add the code and what code I need to add to redirect the crawlers to one page? Or is there another issue that is causing this? Thanks in advance.

  • 301 redirect: Is this good or bad for 2 domains?

    Since i couldn't find any appropriate answer to my specific question, I wanted to ask you. I've read alot of things about the 301-redirect for moving pages and so on. A customer of mine has booked a new domain last year for better search results (he included his main keyword into the domain. Before he had only a domain with his business name, which had nothing to say about what he does). I told him, that he should do a 301-redirect so he doesn't loose his position in Google and to redirect all new customers coming from the old domain to the new domain. After about one year where his site hat a good amount of traffic the search results of Google for his keywords are getting more worse. Since he didn't maintain his website (no new content, bad content on all pages and so on) I assumed this would be the problem. He gave his website to another company which also makes websites. They told him, that this 301-redirection is very bad for his website. They removed it, and also updated his content and the template so now he has the same meta keywords on every page (instead of the specific ones I put there before). He also removed the canonical-tag which I placed there to ensure no duplicate content. What I am now afraid of is, that without this redirect Google now will find duplicate content and therefore kick him out of the index, which would be a nightmare, since most of his customers come over his website. I need verification of the fact, that the 301 isn't bad but in fact the correct way of working with 2 domains. If possible with good sources I can point out to him since he don't wants to hear anything about this. If someone also has a few words about the keywords and the canonical-tag I would really appreciate it! Thank you very much!

  • Grub2 attempting to boot hd1 when it should boot hd0

    I'm attempting to perform a "normal" install on a USB3 SSD (I don't know if it is noteworthy, but I don't have a swap partition). The installation proceeds normally (I'm installing from a USB2 device I created using LiLi Boot, with a copy of Ubuntu 12.10 64bit that I downloaded directly from the source. The system I'm running Ubuntu on has had a more traditional installation of ubuntu running on it without issue (also 12.10), so I know that everything works A-OK when booting from a 7200RPM internal disk. There are a number of oddities that I've noticed so far, including graphics corruption, but the first and most pressing issue is that Grub2 refuses to recognize the correct hd. From /boot/grub/grub.cfg: if [ x$feature_default_font_path = xy ] ; then font=unicode else insmod part_msdos insmod ext2 set root='hd1,msdos1' if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd1,msdos1 --hint-efi=hd1,msdos1 --hint-baremetal=ahci1,msdos1 b58ee4f7-d41d-400a-b7b8-18bd1f0ae9d3 else search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root b58ee4f7-d41d-400a-b7b8-18bd1f0ae9d3 fi font="/usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2" fi This is from a 100% fresh install of linux (first boot), which was installed while no hard drives were connected to the system, other than the USB2 LiLi drive. The system refuses to boot unless I change the hd1,msdos1 - hd0,msdos1 in the grub menu at boot, when it is the only disk device connected to the PC. What options are left for me to troubleshoot this issue? I've been racking my brains and taxing the internet trying to dig up something on this problem, but now I'd like to see if the Ubuntu community can rise to the challenge and help me fix this boot problem. This is the second time I've attempted this particular setup. The first time, after days of wasted time, I managed to get it to boot every other boot - i.e. every even boot it would boot into Ubuntu like it was happy; every odd boot it would boot into the BusyBox or Grub prompt. At one point it complained that it couldn't find /dev/disk/by-uuid/[the disk], which I found most perplexing, since the disk was there and booted before and after the occurrence (with intervention).

  • What Is .recently-used.xbel and How Do I Delete It for Good?

    If you’re reading this article, you’ve probably noticed the .recently-used.xbel file in the root of your User folder, and you’re wondering why it keeps constantly coming back even though you repeatedly delete it. So What Is It? The quick answer is that it’s part of the GTK+ library used by a number of cross-platform applications, perhaps the most well-known of which is the Pidgin instant messenger client. As the name implies, the file is used to store a list of the most recently used files. In the case of Pidgin, this comes into play when you are transferring files over IM, and that’s when the file will appear again. Note: this is actually a known and reported bug in Pidgin, but sadly the developers aren’t terribly responsive when it comes to annoyances. Pidgin seems to go for long periods of time without any updates, but we still use it because it’s open-source, cross-platform, and works well. How Do I Get Rid of It? Unfortunately, there’s no way to easily get rid of it, apart from using a different application. If you need to transfer files over Pidgin, the file is going to re-appear… but there’s a quick workaround! The general idea is to set the file properties to Hidden and Read-only. You’d think you could just set it to Hidden and be done with it, but Pidgin will re-create the file every time, so instead we’re leaving the file there and preventing it from being accessed. You could also totally remove access through the Security tab if you wanted to, but this worked fine for me… as you can see, no more file in the folder. Of course, you can’t have the show hidden files and folders option turned on, or the file will continue to show up. Want to get really geeky? You can toggle hidden files with a shortcut key.   • Building a List of All SharePoint Timer Jobs Programmatically in C#

    One of the most frustrating things about SharePoint is that the difficulty in figuring something out is inversely proportional to the simplicity of what you are trying to accomplish.  Case in point, yesterday I wanted to get a list of all the timer jobs in SharePoint.  Having never done this nor having any idea of exactly how to do this right off the top of my head, I inquired to Google.  I like to think my Google-fu is fair to good, so I normally find exactly what I’m looking for in the first hit.  But on the topic of listing all SharePoint timer jobs all it came up with a PowerShell script command (Get-SPTimerJob) and nothing more. Refined search after refined search continued to turn up nothing. So apparently I am the only person on the planet who needs to get a list of the timer jobs in C#.  In case you are the second person on the planet who needs to do this, the code to do so follows: SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(() => {    var timerJobs = new List();    foreach (var job in SPAdministrationWebApplication.Local.JobDefinitions)    {       timerJobs.Add(job);    }    foreach (SPService curService in SPFarm.Local.Services)    {       foreach (var job in curService.JobDefinitions)       {          timerJobs.Add(job);       }     } }); For reference, you have the two for loops because the Central Admin web application doesn’t end up being in the SPFarm.Local.Services group, so you have to get it manually from the SPAdministrationWebApplication.Local reference.

  • Power manager keeps shutting down the display

    I'm probably missing something here. I'm using the default Ubuntu power manger, I set it up like this: On AC: no screen dimming when idle, never put computer to sleep, never put display to sleep. On battery: I kept the default settings. Still, Ubuntu does whatever it likes, and after 15 min it puts the display to sleep. Does anyone have the same problem and found a way to solve it? I'm using an Eee PC with Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop.

    Hi. I am integrating with a set of REST services exposed by our partner. The unit of integration is at the project level meaning that for each project created on our partners side of the fence they will expose a unique set of REST services. To be more clear, assume there are two projects - project1 and project2. The REST services available to access the project data would then be: /project1/search/getstuff?etc... /project1/analysis/getstuff?etc... /project1/cluster/getstuff?etc... /project2/search/getstuff?etc... /project2/analysis/getstuff?etc... /project2/cluster/getstuff?etc... My task is to wrap these services in a C# class to be used by our app developer. I want to make it simple for the app developer and am thinking of providing something like the following class. class ProjectClient { SearchClient _searchclient; AnalysisClient _analysisclient; ClusterClient _clusterclient; string Project {get; set;} ProjectClient(string _project) { Project = _project; } } SearchClient, AnalysisClient and ClusterClient are my classes to support the respective services shown above. The problem with this approach is that ProjectClient will need to provide public methods for each of the API's exposed by SearchClient, etc... public void SearchGetStuff() { _searchclient.getStuff(); } Any suggestions how I can architect this better?
