• Page loading hangs and never times out (Apache)

  I have set up Apache2 on a guest Ubuntu 10.04 OS (virtualbox). I have created a "big" HTML file (4MB) with only plain text and when I access a page through my local IP address such as http://192.168.0.100 it successfully loads the entire page. However, when I try to access it through my public IP address the browser loads part of the page and then hangs forever on "loading". I can load a simple webpage though. I'm not sure whether it's an issue with my Apache configuration, Virtualbox, Router or Modem. Any clues? Tried enabling Debug and mod_status but didn't find any useful information.

• Switching to Chrome from IE

  Hi, I work in IT at a school and we recently updated our database software, however the web access that the teachers use to do registration does not work too well with Internet Explorer 7 and we're thinking about switching to chrome (mostly due to me hating IE in general) but the problem we have is that users are unable to migrate their bookmarks over from IE due to account restrictions, is there any way to get this working? A bit of info about the system if it could be helpful; Almost all the client PCs are running Win XP SP2. My colleagues machines are running Windows 7, I use OS X Snow Leopard and most of out servers are running windows server 2003 (with the exception of 2 one on 2000 server and another on 2008 R2). • Internet connection issues after installing Windows Phone 8 SDK

  first of all I must admit, that I'm not good in all this network stuff. I am using Windows 8 OS. On my laptop (Lenovo G570) I have installed Windows Phone 8 SDK and shortly after this I started having weird issues with internet connection. When I start my laptop, internet usually works fine, but after a few minutes it starts slowing down so much, that I'm not able to open a single page. Rebooting doesn't work, after several disabling and enabling network adapter, it usually works again for a few minutes and then again it stops. I'm sure it has something to do with Windows Phone 8 SDK, because problems started with this. With SDK there was also installed "vEthernet (Internal Ethernet Port Windows Phone Emulator Internal Switch)" network adapter. It is worth to note that problems occur mostly in my school network, not at home. Both at home and school I am using Wi-Fi connection. I hope the information given are enough to help me. • Url-based web site publishing on Windows Server platform

  I have a Windows 2008 Enterprise SP2 server in a datacenter. It is 32bit OS. I need to be able to do a "smart" url-based web site publishing. So that with a single external IP I can publish many sites on port 80, and some firewall logic resolves, based on a requested URL, which site in IIS gets the request. Forefront TMG 2010 has this feature, but it is not supported on 32bit systems. Is there a software solution that can satissfy my need on Windows 2K8 platform? Thank you. P.S. Perhaps there is a workaround or a tweak to do what I need in IIS?

  Hi! I'm trying to create a 'left client' server < 'right client' setup but need some advice and tips. Let's say that I have a server-daemon on the left side, like a vnc-server that connects to the middle server. On the right side I've got a client that want to connect to the left server-daemon, but it has to be done through the middle server. I assume this should be done with some tunneling service.   I have Solaris 10 and 11 running on my system. I want to update all of them to newest patch. I don't have license or support plan for Solaris yet (the OS is pre-installed on my server). On Solaris 11 I heard I need a support license and a cert to connect to Oracle software repository. What about Solaris 10? Can I fetch patch bundle and install it without connect to Oracle (for both Solaris 10 and 11)? TIA.

• Drive reporting incorrect free space

  So I swapped my shiny SATA SSD for an even shinier PCI-E SSD. I run my core OS on the SSD because it's silly-fast. I did this on my old SSD so I created a new EXT4 partition and then just dded the data across (sorry I don't know the exact command I ran anymore) and after reinstalling grub, I booted onto the PCI-E SSD. At first glance everything had worked perfectly and things were running faster than ever. But then I noticed the free disk space on the new, larger drive: it was almost exactly the same as it was on the other disk... A disk that was half its size. So it looks as if I've copied the files across incorrectly and it's copied some of the filesystem metadata along with it. Tools like du and Disk Usage Analyzer come back with the correct figures. Things that look at the partition (and not the files) seem to think the drive is 120GB I've been using this drive for a week now so it's way out of sync with the old SSD so dumping the data and starting again isn't a job that fills me with joy but two questions: Is there a way to fix my filesystem so it knows what it's really on about? fsck e2fsck and badblocks all seem to be able to scan it without finding a problem with it. If I do plug my old SSD back in, copy the data off my PCI-E on to it and then copy it back onto a fresh filesystem (eg juggle the data around), what's the best way of doing that? I obviously want to keep all the permissions and softlinks where they are.

• Constant prompts for credentials from one Mac Outlook 2011 client

  The majority of my Exchange users are all on Windows 7 and have no issues (at least using Outlook...) but a subset of the executives are ardent Mac users running Outlook 2011 for OS X. One of these clients is prompted every 5-10 minutes for credentials. Ticking the checkbox to remember credentials does not fix the situation. Mac version is 10.7.2. I have already removed and rebuilt the EWS virtual directory on my Client Access server. Outlook anywhere is set to NTLM authentication. None of the Microsoft clients are experiencing this issue. What else can I do to make this issue go away?

  I lent my 3 USB modem to a friend because her Meteor USB modem had run out of credit. The 3 modem worked on her machine fine once the driver was installed. She bought Meteor credit a couple of days later, uninstalled the 3 driver and she only now seems to get on the Meteor server, when you try IE8 or Firefox you get the message “Page could not be found”. I uninstalled the Meteor driver and reinstalled…no change. The OS is Win_7 home edition. Any help would be much appreciated. Regards to all, oddbyte7.

  I backup SQL Server database and it fails BACKUP DATABASE dd TO DISK = '\backupServer\backups\dd.bak' WITH COMPRESSION, CHECKSUM, NOFORMAT, INIT , BlockSize = 65536 , BufferCount = 2200 , MaxTransferSize = 4194304 The backup size is 3TB and I have 6TB free space on bacup server. I am using backup parameters per SQLCAT whitepaper. Everything works ok when I backup to local HDD and it always fails when I backup to network share. After about 6 hours. Can't find why. Thank you. Yes. The backup over the network is fastest and saves me 3Tb of local disk space :) Thanks for pointing to the memory issue. I left 4Gb to OS and it worked!

The computer on that network drive is running Windows XP. I want to back up data on Windows 7. How would I do so? I'd like something similar to Mac OS X' time machine. So copy of data every hour, day, week. Then thinning out, data gets deleted automatically as time goes by. For example, the data for last day is kept as hourly snapshots. For last week, as daily snapshots every day. And for last month as weekly snapshots. How can I achieve this?

As described here Linux Environment- setenv.sh , I have created a setenv.sh in tomcat/bin, and the only think I added is the export JAVA_OPTS =”-Dmyprojectvar.subname=value -Danothervariable=value -Danother.variable=value” I dont know, is this enough to set the properties. I just want to add three properties to tomcat as system property using setenv.sh. What should I do to complete it successfully? • USB Keyboard works occasionally

  A few days ago I bought a SL640 Hama USB keyboard to use on my laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. But I'm having problems, as it works one time out of 10! While on my girlfriend's laptop, with Win Vista, always works. And on my laptop I have Win7 in dual boot. And I have to say that it always works on it. Here are some infos: ~$ lsusb Bus 006 Device 003: ID 04d9:1503 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc. Shortboard Lefty As you can see, the OS recognized it but the keyboard doesn't react ... even the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys don't blink. Regarding the legacy support (useful for GRUB), I have found no entry in the BIOS. But I'm not interested in it. I just want to use it in Ubuntu. However, in GRUB it works sometimes. Surprisingly, now I have booted my laptop: the usb keyboard hasn't worked in GRUB but it has worked since the ubuntu login! And now I'm typing with it. Well.. it means that Ubuntu has the right drivers and they work. But how to "load" them always correctly? thanks in advance!

  I used Webmin to create the following Virtual Host: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/var/www/whatever" ServerName whatever.ourdomain <Directory "/var/www/whatever"> allow from all Options +Indexes </Directory> </VirtualHost> And when restarting Apache I get Starting httpd: Warning: DocumentRoot [/var/www/whatever] does not exist The thing is, the directory absolutely DOES exist. I'm staring right at it. pwd shows me that's my current directory, etc. It's not that hard to spell it right. I can't find any other errors or warnings in the httpd logs. apache:apache owns the directory and all subdirectories/files. There isn't any symlinks or anything involved here. What am I missing or what else should I look at to determine why this is? OS is CentOS 6.0

• Odd behavior of permissions and icons

  After some virus had infected my Windows 7, I did a complete format and re-installed the OS. I was just installing applications and copying back some data when I noticed some shortcuts changing their icons to something I couldnt recognize (Yellow icons in the image below). Also, a few exe files which previously did not ask for User permission, are now asking for it. Wondering if this is an icon cache problem, I cleared the cache by deleting the IconCache.db in AppData/Local but the problem still persists. Although I did a full system scan with MS Security Essentials, I'm not sure if this is another virus or some other problem. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Edit: Now even Firefox needs permissions to launch. It's icon hasnt changed, but it's got the 'shield' overlay on it like the other yellow icons.

• tmux -- any way to enable scrolling, but not selection?

  I like that when mode-mouse is on in tmux, I can scroll through the buffer, but I don't like that I can't copy stuff to my OS clipboard by selecting it (as when tmux is disabled). Question: Is there any way to enable mouse scrolling, but not selection? I'm using KDE's konsole, if it matters. I've tried setting, set -g mouse-select-pane off set -g mouse-select-window off but no luck -- the only difference seems to be whether mode-mouse is on (tmux captures scrolling and selection) or off (tmux captures neither scrolling nor selection).

• I can't open a Word file because it's too large

  I was creating a file with MS Word 2007 where I included a number of images. I didn't compress them as I was putting them into the file. I managed to save the file, but have not been able to reopen it ever since, as it says that I have exceeded the 32 MB limit. I am working on an old Macbook (OS X 10.4.11). I have tried to open the file in both OpenOffice and LibreOffice, but it just causes those programs to crash. Is there any way of reducing the file size without opening the document?

  I have a problem on a Linux OS running a version of SMB where if the absolute path to a directory within a Shared Folder is greater than 1024 bytes and the filename component is greater than 256 bytes the SMB service crashes and locks out all other services for network access like, SSH and FTP rendering the machine mute. To keep the system for crashing I’ve temporarily moved a group of folders where I think the problem path may be located outside of Shared Folder. I need to find the file and file path that exceeded this limitation and rename them or remove them allowing me to return a bulk of the files to the Shared Folder. I’ve tried the find and grep commands without success. Is there a chain of commands or script that I can use to hunt down the offending files and directory? Please advise.

  I am developing a web application on localhost with domains and sub-domains and I would like to use a HTTPS connection. On my Mac OS, in order to enable SSL, I need to set Apache correctly, so I followed some guide to accomplish part of that. Now it is time to choose a certificate in order to test HTTPS requests. I seen the cacert.pem, but I don't know how to use that and for what it is used (can you explain to me some about its usage?)... So, is it possible to use the cacert.pem (see the link) for all my domains and subdomains (maybe, as a wildcard certificate) on localhost? If so, how to do that? What certificate I have to take and use? If no, what I need to do in order to use a wildcard certificate for all my domains and subdomains on localhost? Of course those certificates must be accepted by browsers and working for HTTPS connection between my domains.

• Virtualbox, slow upload speed using nat

  Im running Virtualbox on a Ubuntu 12.04 server (host) and I'm running a Windows 7 as guest os. Im using the (virtual) Intel PRO/1000 MT network card. I get good network performance for download using both nat and bridged network settings but upload speed is really slow using nat. I have tied this on tow different servers, one brand new, and one a several years old, both gave the same result. If you can explain this behavior or have ideas of further test I can perform please let me know.

• How can I see if apache is overloaded and dropping or not accepting connections?

  Basically I just want to see if apache is handling a current level of high traffic or if I need to tune it to handle more connections. (I have found plenty of information on the actual tuning, so no help needed there) I know it has been dropping or not accepting connections earlier today, but not seeing anything in the error logs. Is the expected behavior to throw a 503 in the error log if apache cannot accept more connections? If so, what error logging level do I need in order to see these? What is the correct terminology: dropping connections or not accepting connections? MPM is prefork, OS is Linux, apache version is 2.2.15.

• How can I restore GRUB without a live CD?

  I realize that this is a duplicate of a question asked before, but in that question the asker managed to find his live CD and no real answer appeared, thus I am re-asking it. I managed to screw up my GRUB by deleting two linux partitions on my hard drive from windows. After this, GRUB gives the error "partition not found", and gives me the grub-rescue prompt. The only command I have found to work in this is 'ls', which spits out my partitions. I would use the live CD fix, but I am in India, and all my live CDs are back home in the US... What I've got is an internet connection, a 4GB flash drive with Flow OS installed (which I am currently using but can wipe if need be), and a working laptop that I can borrow. What should I do?

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • First Linux - Ubuntu - should I change anything right away?

  I'm going to be getting a new system next week. I'm finally going to take the leap and run Linux as the native OS on it. Seems like a standard install of Ubuntu is the way to go for a newbie. I'm planning on 10.04 LTS. Is there anything that I should change right away that will cause me problems down the road? I'll be using this system for web development, mainly programming PHP. I'll be using my old laptop for testing with IE and Safari, at least until I either use Wine or VirtualBox to run them on the new machine. I think I'm going to force myself to learn Vim while I'm at it.
