• [iPhone] Play video not in full screen mode

  Hello, First, excuse my english :) I've read on apple developer website that video playback provides by the framework supports only full screen mode. I will need to develop an application where video can be played in reduce screen mode. I've see that Orange TV make something which looks like what i need to do. http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1228/tvplayerorange.jpg The application is available on app store but you need to have a subscription to test this application. Whatever, to resume it, we can see video (tv stream video) in a reduce mode and if we click on the screen it switch to a full screen mode. So my question, what i want to do is possible (Orange TV made it) but i wonder the difficulty to make it. It seems that I have to make a video player. If it take a bunch of time, I tkink I will use Media Player Framework of iPhone even isn't the optimal solution for me. Feel free to ask me more details ;) Thank you for your answers.

• C++ class derivation and superconstructor confusion

  Hey, in a tutorial C++ code, I found this particular piece of confusion: PlasmaTutorial1::PlasmaTutorial1(QObject *parent, const QVariantList &args) : Plasma::Applet(parent, args), // <- Okay, Plasma = namespace, Applet = class m_svg(this), // <- A member function of class "Applet"? m_icon("document") // <- ditto? { m_svg.setImagePath("widgets/background"); // this will get us the standard applet background, for free! setBackgroundHints(DefaultBackground); resize(200, 200); } I'm not new to object oriented programming, so class derivation and super-classes are nothing complicated, but this syntax here got me confused. The header file defines the class like this: class PlasmaTutorial1 : public Plasma::Applet { Similar to above, namespace Plasma and class Applet. But what's the public doing there? I fear that I already know the concept but don't grasp the C++ syntax/way of doing it. In this question I picked up that these are called "superconstructors", at least that's what stuck in my memory, but I don't get this to the full extend. If we glance back at the first snippet, we see Constructor::Class(...) : NS::SuperClass(...), all fine 'till here. But what are m_svg(this), m_icon("document") doing there? Is this some kind of method to make these particular functions known to the derivated class? Is this part of C++ basics or more immediate? While I'm not completly lost in C++, I feel much more at home in C :) Most of the OOP I have done so far was done in D, Ruby or Python. For example in D I would just define class MyClass : MySuperClass, override what I needed to and call the super class' constructor if I'd need to.

• ASP.NET problem - Firebug shows odd behaviour

  I have an ASP.NET application that does a large database read. It loads up a gridview inside an update panel. In VS2008, just running on my local machine, it runs fantastically. In production (identical code, just published and put on one of our network servers), it runs slow as dirt. Debug is set to false, so this is not the cause of the slow down. I'm not an experienced web developer, so besides that, feel free to suggest the obvious. I have been using Firebug to determine what's going on, and here is what that has turned up: On production, there are around 500 requests. The timeline bar is very short. The size column varies from run to run, but is always the same for the duration of the run. Locally, there are about 30 requests. The timeline bar takes up the entire space. Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? Also, I can't find much of anything on the web about this, so any references are helpful too.

• What database options do I have for the Blackberry?

  I notice most of the discussions about Blackberry database options are old, and generally not too informative. As of today, March 31st, 2010, what is the best, most universally supported, free database option available for Blackberry developers? I heard SQLite is available for JDE v5, but last I checked, that was still in beta, and I didn't want to commit to developing on a system that is not supported by most of the phones in service. Thing is, I don't see any dates on these claims. For all I know, the announcements I am reading are from 2008. So, I am still on v 4.7. I need to use a relational DB for the app I am developing, but there aren't many resources for DB handling available - or at least resources that are useful to me. I find a lot of "tutorials" that assume you know everything there is to know about Blackberry development, or Java. But no complete classes or anything. Many of these examples don't even work. Eclipse gives warnings and errors from code copied and pasted from other people's examples. I can answer any questions that may assist in this case. Hopefully, this thread will help many BB developers in the future.

• Sorted queue with dropping out elements

  I have a list of jobs and queue of workers waiting for these jobs. All the jobs are the same, but workers are different and sorted by their ability to perform the job. That is, first person can do this job best of all, second does it just a little bit worse and so on. Job is always assigned to the person with the highest skills from those who are free at that moment. When person is assigned a job, he drops out of the queue for some time. But when he is done, he gets back to his position. So, for example, at some moment in time worker queue looks like: [x, x, .83, x, .7, .63, .55, .54, .48, ...] where x's stand for missing workers and numbers show skill level of left workers. When there's a new job, it is assigned to 3rd worker as the one with highest skill of available workers. So next moment queue looks like: [x, x, x, x, .7, .63, .55, .54, .48, ...] Let's say, that at this moment worker #2 finishes his job and gets back to the list: [x, .91, x, x, .7, .63, .55, .54, .48, ...] I hope the process is completely clear now. My question is what algorithm and data structure to use to implement quick search and deletion of worker and insertion back to his position. For the moment the best approach I can see is to use Fibonacci heap that have amortized O(log n) for deleting minimal element (assigning job and deleting worker from queue) and O(1) for inserting him back, which is pretty good. But is there even better algorithm / data structure that possibly take into account the fact that elements are already sorted and only drop of the queue from time to time?

(I want to become more familiar with the language to understand someone else's code - SCID chess) The task i've set myself to motivate my learing of Tcl is to solve the 8 queens problem. My approach to creating a program is to sucessively 'prototype' a solution. So. • Are there really safe and legal resources for sound effects to use in applications?

  For those who want to opt for "close" immediately: Great user interfaces need great sound effects, right? User interfaces are programmed by programmers, right? So this is a programming question, ok? I had a very hard time to find good and legal sound resources. I am not looking for free sounds. Proper licensing is absolutely crucial, and I don't want to get sued by multibilliondollar music companies, hollywood sound studios and their highly overpaid lawyers. They cry about people downloading their stuff in file sharing sites but when someone comes and wants to really license stuff, the market is so empty like an open and unwatched gold mine. Trust me, whatever I type into google, I always end up getting sort of opaque and strange music libraries that do charge money, but refuse to provide proper licensing evidence to the licensee. When you pay money and they only count how many files you downloaded, that can never be a valid license, nor any evidence for you that you did license the sounds. Imagine that contributor suing you and you say: "I licensed it at xy", and his lawyer just smiles: "Show me proof, mofo!". So you loose a million dollars, or 1 for every downloaded app. Congrats. But that's the way all those "hey we're the worlds largest sound effect library" libraries are doing it. It's really annoying. And I hope someone here is able to point out a sound effects ressource which is A) big B) used by professinals C) has a reasonable pricing and licensing model D) provides the licensee with proper legal evidence about licensed sounds You know, I'm not from the US and typically you US folks are the ones who invent the cool stuff on the net, and maybe I just missed a new great start up. For example, within the text I have two important tags: <2004:04:12 and . Unfortunately some of tags have missing "<" or "" delimiter. For example, some are as follows: 1) <2004:04:12 , I need this to be <2004:04:12> 2) 2004:04:12>, I need this to be <2004:04:12> 3) <John Doe , I need this to be <John Doe> I attempted to use the following for situation 1: String regex = "<\\d{4}-\\d{2}-\\d{2}\\w*{2}[^>]"; String output = content.replaceAll(regex,"$0>"); This did find all instances of "<2004:04:12" and the result was "<2004:04:12 ". However, I need to eliminate the space prior to the ending tag. Not sure this is the best way. Any suggestions. Thanks

So when that function finishes i get an array which contains IDs and Names. I echo the names but i want the ID for reference so when i click on the echoed name i can call an other php function with parameter the ID of the name... How do i get rid of the switch statement?? How do i call properly php functions and pass params to it??? How can i save this IDs so when i click on an item with that id an other php function is called?? Plz feel free to ask any question, any answer is welcome :)

Then I tried to connect a MySQL database I have a free hosting account, but I am not able to connect to MySQL database. • Parallel doseq for Clojure

  I haven't used multithreading in Clojure at all so am unsure where to start. I have a doseq whose body can run in parallel. What I'd like is for there always to be 3 threads running (leaving 1 core free) that evaluate the body in parallel until the range is exhausted. There's no shared state, nothing complicated - the equivalent of Python's multiprocessing would be just fine. So something like: (dopar 3 [i (range 100)] ; repeated 100 times in 3 parallel threads... ...) Where should I start looking? Is there a command for this? A standard package? A good reference? So far I have found pmap, and could use that (how do I restrict to 3 at a time? looks like it uses 32 at a time - no, source says 2 + number of processors), but it seems like this is a basic primitive that should already exist somewhere. clarification: I really would like to control the number of threads. I have processes that are long-running and use a fair amount of memory, so creating a large number and hoping things work out OK isn't a good approach (example which uses a significant chunk available mem). update: Starting to write a macro that does this, and I need a semaphore (or a mutex, or an atom i can wait on). Do semaphores exist in Clojure? Or should I use a ThreadPoolExecutor? It seems odd to have to pull so much in from Java - I thought parallel programming in Clojure was supposed to be easy... Maybe I am thinking about this completely the wrong way? Hmmm. Agents?

• Revision Control System Recommendations

  I've reached a point in my independent development work where I would like to start using Subversion techniques. Up to now, I've been simply making backups by exporting my current database, and zipping them together with my PHP project files. I've read some articles online and watched a video with Linus Torvalds - the general verdict seems to be that Git is in and old CVS techniques are out. I'm not currently operating under Linux, I do all PHP work out of Windows - Eclipse. Due to the fact that Eclipse runs on JVM, jumping into Linux - Eclipse will be more or less transparent - file system aside. What I would like to accomplish is being able to keep a constant revision history - But I want this to be almost entirely transparent. Also, I work in an MVC framework, and I would like to be able to release my views to Designers, and have them work from within the revision control system too. Will Egit accomplish what I need? Or is it too much overhead for a one-man workforce? What do you recommend I use so that I can keep a revision history? I also require the service to be free! Thank you all - StackOverflow ftw!

• servlet connection to DB

  Initially, after reading books on the subject, I firmly believed that the algorithm for working with a database from a servlet is as follows: create a connection - connect to the database - form a request - send the request to the database - get the query results - process them - close connection - OK. Now, with a better understanding of the practical side, I realized that nobody does it that way, and everything happens through a connection pool according to the following algorithm: initialize the servlet - create a connection pool - a request comes from a user - take a free connection from the pool - form a request - send the request to the database - get the query results - process them - return the connection back to the pool - ok. Now I have this problem: We have 100 users, they are divided into 10 groups, each group has it's own username and password to connect to the database. Moreover, each group may have different rights to the database. How am I supposed to use a connection pool in this situation? If I understand correctly, a pool is nothing more than just a group of similar connections with a single login and password. And here I have 10 pairs of username / password. It looks like I cannot use the pool in this situation. What should I do?

• Getting Google repositories to work with apt-get on Ubuntu Hardy

  I've installed Google Chrome on Hardy via the .deb file and would like to configure apt-get for automatic updates. [I have another machine running Ubuntu Karmic where this works fine; apt-get knows the package as 'google-chrome'; I'm now using a Dell Mini 10 with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS installed] As part of the .deb install, two entries have been added to the third- party software sources tab: http://dl.google.com/linux/deb stable main http://dl.google.com/linux/deb stable non-free main However if I check for updates with either of these clicked, I get the following error: Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/dists/stable/Release Unable to find expected entry main/binary-lpia/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?) There is a thread here which indicates others have had the same problem: http://www.google.co.uk/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=097d103f87b49abe&hl=en This references a further thread: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=38608 which suggests the problem has been fixed. Despite this I remain unable to get it to work, and none of the suggested workarounds seem to work either. Ideas ? Thanks.

• Is there a Visual Studio (or freeware) equivalent for Expression Blend's "Edit Template" feature?

  In Expression Blend, you can view and edit the control template of objects in the "Objects and Timeline" panel. I'm wondering if there's an equivalent feature in Visual Studio or if there's something free (or very inexpensive) I can download that will allow me to do this. • Synthetic click doesn't switch application's menu bar (Mac OS X)

  Hi. I'm developing some sort of air mouse application for iPhone platform. This applications connects to one computer service which generates mouse events on Mac OS X. I'm generating this events with CGEventCreateMouseEvent() and CGEventPost(). But I've encountered one problem. Let's say you are using Safari and then you click on free desktop space. If you do this with regular mouse it will hide Safari's top menu bar and show Finder menu bar. But on these synthetic events it doesn't act like that. Do I have to post some other event or set some additional properties? • Entity Framework Decorator Pattern

  In my line of business we have Products. These products can be modified by a user by adding Modifications to them. Modifications can do things such as alter the price and alter properties of the Product. This, to me, seems to fit the Decorator pattern perfectly. Now, envision a database in which Products exist in one table and Modifications exist in another table and the database is hooked up to my app through the Entity Framework. How would I go about getting the Product objects and the Modification objects to implement the same interface so that I could use them interchangeably? For instance, the kind of things I would like to be able to do: Given a Modification object, call .GetNumThings(), which would then return the number of things in the original object, plus or minus the number of things added by the modification. This question may be stemming from a pretty serious lack of exposure to the nitty-gritty of EF (all of my experience so far has been pretty straight-forward LOB Silverlight apps), and if that's the case, please feel free to tell me to RTFM. • Which web solution should I use for my project?

  I'm going to create a fairly large (from my point of view anyway) web project with a friend. We will create a site with roads and other road related info. Our calculations is that we will have around 100k items in our database. Each item will contain some information like location, name etc. (about 30 thing each). We are counting on having a few hundred thousand unique visitors per month. The 100k items and their locations (that will be searchable) will be the main part of the page but we will also have some articles, comments, news and later on some more social functions (accounts, forums, picture uploads etc.). We were going to use Google AppEngine to develop our project since it is really scalable and free (at least for a while). But I'm actually starting to doubt that AppEngine is right for us. It seems to be for webbapps and not sites like ours. Which system (language/framework etc.) would you guys recommend us to use? It doesn't really mater if we know the language since before (we like learning new stuff) but it would be good if it's something that is future proof.

• How to get notified about changes of the history via history.pushState?

  So now that HTML5 introduces history.pushState to change the browsers history, websites start using this in combination with Ajax instead of changing the fragment identifier of the URL. Sadly that means that those calls cannot be detect anymore by onhashchange. My question is: Is there a reliable way (hack? ;)) to detect when a website uses history.pushState? The specification does not state anything about events that are raised (at least I couldn't find anything). I tried to create a facade and replaced window.history with my own JavaScript object, but it didn't have any effect at all. Further explanation: I'm developing a Firefox add-on that needs to detect these changes and act accordingly. I know there was a similar question a few days ago that asked whether listening to some DOM events would be efficient but I would rather not rely on that because these events can be generated for a lot of different reasons. Update: Here is a jsfiddle (use Firefox 4 or Chrome 8) that shows that onpopstate is not triggered when pushState is called (or am I doing something wrong? Feel free to improve it!). Update 2: Another (side) problem is that window.location is not updated when using pushState (but I read about this already here on SO I think).

• j_security_check to SSO in different module under Oracle App Server?

  I have an existing j2ee application running on Oracle App Server. It is targeted towards paying customers so the content is secured and a SSO module properly intercepts all requests for secured content. Now the company is adding a unbranded public-facing module with a number of unsecured pages. At one point the user is expected to register for a free account and log in to proceed further. Think doctors adding a public-facing site with information for potential patients, or lawyers adding a public-facing site with information for potential clients. There's some information on the session and the usual approach would be to authenticate the user, persist the session information using the now-known user id, invalidate the existing session (to prevent certain types of attacks), the reload the session information before returning to the user. I can't just persist it under the session id since that's about to change. The glitch is that the existing application already has an SSO module and I get a 404 error every time I try to direct to j_security_check. I've tried that, /sso/j_security_check, even http://localhost/sso/j_security_check, all without success. I noticed that an earlier question said that tomcat requires access to a secured page before j_security_check is even visible. I don't know if that's the case with Oracle AS. Ideas? Or is the best approach to continue arguing that we have a different user base so it would be better to handle authentication in our own module anyway?

• IntelliJ inspection -- non-thrown exception

  This is a follow-up question to 1832203. I'm making it a new question as well, because it seems that posting an answer to a question doesn't change its position on the java page and so I'm worried that it won't get seen. Apologies if I've just stepped on some etiquette toes. I'm an IntelliJ newbie -- started using it two days ago and I'm absolutely head-over-heels in love! One of the things I adore is the code inspections. However... In one of my classes I often create exceptions without throwing them. If I can't turn off (or downgrade) the inspection warning for this then I can see I'm going to end up ignoring inspections on at least that file (if not the entire project), which would be a real pity. I've done a search in the inspection settings for "exception", and found nothing that relates exactly, so I turned them all off just to see, and it's still doing it (even after a rebuild...BTW when are inspections redone? at save? at rebuild? ???), so I would really like some help on how to make this one into an info/typo level -- which I can then ignore. Using the free version, if that makes any difference TIA to all those experienced IntelliJ warriors out there!

• Delete on a very deep tree

  I am building a suffix trie (unfortunately, no time to properly implement a suffix tree) for a 10 character set. The strings I wish to parse are going to be rather long (up to 1M characters). The tree is constructed without any problems, however, I run into some when I try to free the memory after being done with it. In particularly, if I set up my constructor and destructor to be as such (where CNode.child is a pointer to an array of 10 pointers to other CNodes, and count is a simple unsigned int): CNode::CNode(){ count = 0; child = new CNode* [10]; memset(child, 0, sizeof(CNode*) * 10); } CNode::~CNode(){ for (int i=0; i<10; i++) delete child[i]; } I get a stack overflow when trying to delete the root node. I might be wrong, but I am fairly certain that this is due to too many destructor calls (each destructor calls up to 10 other destructors). I know this is suboptimal both space, and time-wise, however, this is supposed to be a quick-and-dirty solution to a the repeated substring problem. tl;dr: how would one go about freeing the memory occupied by a very deep tree?
