• What's the cleanest way to programmatically kill and restart explorer.exe?

  Greetings all, I'm working on a Windows program whose installation necessitates restarting explorer.exe. I know "Reboot your computer to complete the installation" is the standard method here, but I'd like my installer to give users the option of just restarting Explorer so they can start using my program immediately. What's the best way to do that? Of course I could just find and kill the process, but that seems rather icky. Is there some trick to, say, make Explorer think the user is logging off and close cleanly? Thanks!

• iPad/iPod: autoRotate resizes view in window

  Developing an iPad interface, I have a scenario where I have a UIViewController which manages a view that gets placed directly as a subview of the main UIWindow. Before being placed in the UIWindow, that view gets resized to a non-standard size, let's say, 768x460, and positioned at the bottom of the screen. When rotating the device, the autoRotate feature of the UIViewController causes the view to be resized so that it fills the entire UIWindow space. I thought this might be because in the XIB, the view is set to window size, but when I changed it to reflect the desired size, it still expanded it to the window size. Then I went into the MainWindow XIB and turned off autoresizeSubviews, and it still happens. This is a very frustrating problem, I am hoping that there is merely something obvious that I am missing out on. Anyone have any bright ideas?

• Convert a user's search string into a MS SQL `Full-Text Query` Search Phrase

  I've search for answers for this and I can't seem to find an answer to what should be somewhat simple. This is related to another question I asked, but it's different. What's the best way to take a user's search phrase and throw it into a CONTAINSTABLE(table, column, @phrase, topN ) phrase? Say, for example the user inputs: Books by "Dr. Seuss" What's the best way to turn that into something that will return results in my ContainsTAble() phrase? I was previously parsing the search phrase and writing something like ISABOUT("Books" WEIGHT(1.0), "by" WEIGHT(0.9), "Dr. Seuss" WEIGHT(0.8)) as my @phrase but ISABOUT seems to be returning odd results... especially when one word searches are entered. Any Ideas?

Displays the contents How do you decide between implementing a function or a class? -- Should the parser be a function of the crawler class, or should it be a class in itself, so it can be used by other applications as well? -- If it should be a class, should it be protected or public class? How do you decide between implementing a public or protected class? -- If I had to create a class to generate stats from the parsed contents for eg, should that class be protected (so only the crawler class can access it) or should it be public? • UIWebView memory management

  Hello, I have a problem with memory management. I am developing an application that makes heavy use of UIWebView. This app generates dynamically lots of UIWebViews while loading content from my server. Some of these UIWebViews are quite large and have a lot of pictures. If I use instruments to detect leaks, I do not detect any. However, lots of objects are allocated and I suspect that has to do with the UIWebViews. When the webviews release because no longer needed, it appears that not all memory is released. I mean, after a request to my server the app creates an UITableView and many webviews (instruments say about 8Mb). When user tap back, all of them are released but memory usage only decrements about 2-3 Mb, and after 5-10 minutes using the app it crashes. Am I missing something? Anyone know what could be happening? Thank you!

  I got a last time (and urgent) requeriment of an "event" that needs to be scheduled the same day of every month. Say of you set the start date on the 1st May you should get the next events on the 1st of Jun, 1 Jul etc. The problem comes with a start date on the 31st (the next ones could be 30 or 28 depending on the month) Considering that there are months with different numbers of days (28,30,31) depending on the month itself and the year... what would ba an easy way to setup this? Consider the following (and flawed) nextmonth function: $events = array() function nextmonth($date) { return $date+(60*60*24*30); } $curr = $start; while($curr < $end) { $events[ = $curr; $curr = nextmonth($curr); } Edited to add: The problem for me is, simply enought, is to solve what the number of days of any given month is and thus get the next corresponding date..

  Hi, Is there a way to open a window from the current page using a javascript bookmarklet, and once the the child window has finished loading, setting the value of one of the elements in its DOM to some value from the current page, say for example the currently selected text. I know that this can be done in plane javascript, and also, by appending the value to the URL, and reading it from the web service opened in the new child window. I want to know if there is any other way, as the appending URL method does not let you send text more than two thousand odd characters long. Appreciate any help I can get!

• Combining lists but getting unique members

  I have a bit of a special requirement when combining lists. I will try to illustrate with an example. Lets say I'm working with 2 lists of GamePlayer objects. GamePlayer has a property called LastGamePlayed. A unique GamePlayer is identified through the GamePlayer.ID property. Now I'd like to combine listA and listB into one list, and if a given player is present in both lists I'd like to keep the value from listA. I can't just combine the lists and use a comparer because my uniqueness is based on ID, and if my comparer checks ID I will not have control over whether it picks the element of listA or listB. I need something like: for each player in listB { if not listA.Contains(player) { listFinal.Add(player) } } However, is there a more optimal way to do this instead of searching listA for each element in listB?

• Create Custom Builds of an Xcode Project

  I am going to build a Mac application written in Obj-C with Xcode. For argument's sake let's say it will have 10 optional features. I need a way to enable or disable those features to create custom builds of the application. These builds would be automated (most likely through the Mac OS X Terminal) so I would need a way to state which of these features are enabled/disabled at build time (a configuration file or CLI arguments would be ideal.) So what is the best way to accomplish this? I'm trying to plan this out before I start coding so that there is proper separation in my code base to allow for these features to come and go. Ideally the custom build would only contain compiled code for the features it should have. In other words I don't want to always compile all the features and condition them out at runtime.

• How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

  I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. My question: is it possible to force the load of these extra images AFTER the page and all the other assets have finished loading so that this behaviour is all but eliminated? the html code for the MAP is as follows: <div class="gtmap"><img id="Image-Maps_6200909211657061" src="<?php echo cdnhttpsCheck();   Hi SO folks, I didn't managed to find an Lua client/api for TokyoTyrant. Such Api exists for TokyoCabinet, but not for TT. And Perl and Ruby API exists for TT. TT provides a native binary protocol, a memcached-compatible protocol, and an HTTP-oriented protocol. So my questions are : 1/ Do you think using the memcached (using luamemcached) or the HTTP protocol (using luaSocket) is "enough" for most / simple usage, and so a native Lua api is not necessary ? (the app is a simple uuid storage/distributor) ? 2/ Does it make sense to not use TokyoTyrant, but only TokyoCabinet, and use Lua at the application level to provide network and concurrent access to TC, using, say, Copas (Copas is , from their website, "a dispatcher based on coroutines that can be used by TCP/IP servers." ? When I say: <img\s*src="(.*?)".*?<something\s*image="(.*?)" It doesn't match it. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!

  Couple of months ago, we revamped our web site. We adopted totally new site structure, specifically merged several pages into one. Everything looks charming. However, there are lots of dead links which produce a large number of 404 errors. So how can I do with it? If I leave it alone, could it bite back someday, say eating up my pr? One basic option is using 301 redirect, however it is almost impossible considering the number of it. So is there any workaround? Thanks for your considering!

  Hi, I'm still learning (baby steps). Messing about with a function and hoping to find a tidier way to deal with my datatables. For the more commonly used tables throughout the life of the program, I'll dump them to datatables and query those instead. What I'm hoping to do is query the datatables for say column x = "this", and convert the values of column "y" directly to a List to return to the caller: private List<string> LookupColumnY(string hex) { List<string> stringlist = new List<string>(); DataRow[] rows = tblDataTable.Select("Columnx = '" + hex + "'", "Columny ASC"); foreach (DataRow row in rows) { stringlist.Add(row["Columny"].ToString()); } return stringlist; } Anyone know a slightly simpler method? I simply need this: I need user to login to web application. During login they can either login with remember me or without it. If user logs in with remember me, i want browser to remember them for long time, let's say atleast one year or considerably long time. The way they do it in www.dotnetspider.com,www.codeproject.com,www.daniweb.com and many other sites. If user logs in without remember me, then browser should allow access to website for some 20 -30 minutes and after that their session should expire. Their session should also expire when user logs in and shuts down the browser without logging out. Note: I have succesfully implemented above functionality without using standard asp.net roles and membership by creating my own talbes for user and authenticating against my database table, setting cookie and sessions in my other projects. But for this project we starting from the beginning used standard asp.net roles and membership. We thought it will work and after everything was build at the time of testing it just didn't work. and now we cannot replace the existing functionality with standard asp.net roles and membership with my own custom user tables and all the stuff, you understand what i am taling about. Either there is some kind of bug with standard asp.net roles and membership functionality or i have the whole concept of standard asp.net roles and membership wrong. i have stated what i want above. I think it's very simple and reasonable. What i did Login form with username,password and remember me field. My setting in web.config: <authentication mode="Forms"> <forms loginUrl="~/Account/LogOn" timeout="2880"/> </authentication> in My controller action, i have this: FormsAuth.SignIn(userName, rememberMe); public void SignIn(string userName, bool createPersistentCookie) { FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(userName, createPersistentCookie); } Now the problems are following: I have already stated in above section "I simply need this". user can successfully log in to the system. Their session exists for as much minutes as specified in timeout value in web.config. I have also given a sample of my web.config. In my samplem if i set the timeout to 5 minutes,then user session expires after 5 minutes, that's ok. But if user closes the browser and reopen the browser, user can still enter the website without loggin in untill time specified in "timeout" has not passed out. The sliding expiration for timeout value is also working fine. Now if user logs in to the system with remember me checked, user session still expires after 5 minutes. This is not good behaviour, is it?. I mean to say that if user logs in to the system with remember me checked he should be remembered for a long time untill he doesn't logs out of the system or user doesn't manually deletes all the cookies from the browser. If user logs in to the system without remember me checked his session should expire after the timeout period values specified in web.config and also if users closes the browser. The problem is that if user closes the browser and reopens it he can still enter the website without logging in. I search internet a lot on this topic, but i could not get the solution. In the blog post(http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2005/11/08/430011.aspx) made by Scott Gu on exactly the same topic. The users are complaining about the same thing in their comments ut there is no easy solution given in by Mr. Scott. • Symfony app - how to add calculated fields to Propel objects?

  What is the best way of working with calculated fields of Propel objects? Say I have an object "Customer" that has a corresponding table "customers" and each column corresponds to an attribute of my object. What I would like to do is: add a calculated attribute "Number of completed orders" to my object when using it on View A but not on Views B and C. The calculated attribute is a COUNT() of "Order" objects linked to my "Customer" object via ID. What I can do now is to first select all Customer objects, then iteratively count Orders for all of them, but I'd think doing it in a single query would improve performance. But I cannot properly "hydrate" my Propel object since it does not contain the definition of the calculated field(s). How would you approach it?

• How to capture input parameters from within stored procedure (SQL Server 2005)?

  I would like to create a generic logging solution for my stored procedures, allowing me to log the values of input parameters. Currently I am doing this more or less by hand and I am very unhappy with this approach. Ideally, I would like to say something like the following: "given my spid, what are my input parameters and their values?" This is the same information exposed to me when I run SQL Profiler -- the stored procedure's name, all input params and all input VALUES are listed for me. How can I get my hands on these values from within a stored procedure? Thanks; Duncan

• custom button: properties change, button should be redrawn

  Hi I'm developing an Android app. I have class derived from button to represent a special type of button. This special type has some properties (integers) and according to these one or more circles have to be drawn on top of the button. So I overrode the onDraw function, which looks the values up and accordingly draws the circles. But the class has a function to set new values for its properties. So new values are set but the changes are not reflected in the UI. It seems like the onDraw function is not called. When later I click the button or show a pop up message above my interface the onDraw function is called and the button is drawn correctly. So my question: when changing the properties how can I say that the button has to be redrawn? Thanks a lot!
