    In debian/ubuntu I want to a) create a list of all the files in one directory tree b) do the same for a second directory tree c) compare the two lists such that, only the file NAMES are compared (i.e. just comparing the "file.txt" part so that "/home/folder/file.txt" == "/home/secondfolder/folder/file.txt) d) output a list of all the duplicates can anyone please explain how to do this using scripting languages or regex or something?

  • Finding mail with Lotus Notes 7

    I did some reorganisation of my mail in Lotus Notes 7 this mornign, and seem to have lost some in the process. Not knowing Notes very well, I have two questions: if I selected some mail in the Inbox using the check-column, and dragged that mail into a folder, then selected some more mail in the Inbox, and hit the Del key, will the group of emails that were dragged into the other folder be deleted too, because I didn't unselect them? is there a way to search in all folders, rather than just the current folder?

  • joining text files with 600M+ lines

    I have two files huge.txt and small.txt. Huge has around 600M rows and it's 14Gigs, each line has four space separated words (tokens) and finally another space separated column with a number. Small has 150K rows with a size of ~3M, a space separated word and a number. Both Files are sorted using the sort command, with no extra options. The words in both files may include apostrophes (') and dashes (-). The deisred output would contain all columns from the huge.txt and the second column (the number) from small txt where the first word of huge.txt and the first word of small.txt match. My attemtpts below failed miserably with the following error: cat huge.txt|join -o 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 2.2 - small.txt > output.txt join: memory exhausted What I suspect is that the sorting order isn't right somehow even though the files are pre-sorted using: sort -k1 huge.unsorted.txt > huge.txt sort -k1 small.unsorted.txt > small.txt Problems seem to appear around words that have apostrophes (') or dashes (-). I also tried dictinoary sorting using the -d option bumping into the same error at the end. I see two ways out of this but don't know how to implement any of them. 1) Any tips how to sort the files in a way that the join command considers them to be sorted properly? 2) I was thinking of calculating MD5 or some other hashes of the strings to get rid of the apostrophes and dashes, and do the sorting and joining with the hashes instead of the strings themselves an dat the "translate" back the hashes to strings, but leave the numbers intact at the end of the lines. Since there would be only 150K hashes it's not that bad. What would be a good way to calculate individual hashes for each of the strings? Some AWK magic? See file samples at the end.   • Computer no display from connection problem.

    My computer is booting but has no display. The optical drive has power, but the USB doesn't, so I figured that I had a broken motherboard. However I tried to boot my computer again laying flat, and it worked fine for two seconds, and then froze like it did the first time. It had no display after that. I have come to the conclusion that it is a connection problem (someone had a similar problem on one of the online forums).

  • tomcat 6 start mode setting for production

    Tomcat 6 (as a windows service) seems to have a 'Start Mode' with options of 'java, jvm or exe' which can be set via the Tomcat Monitor (system tray icon). if I set this to 'java', I can see a forked 'java.exe' process for tomcat, if I chose either of the other two, I dont see a separate process. Anyway, would like to know if anyone has any information about what these settings mean and which one would be most appropriate in production.

I just wondering whether the hosted operating system (XEN) has any relation to its guest operating system or not? and when I type uname -r on my VPS it shows : 2.6.18-164.9.1.el5xen where as my installed O/S on my vps is debian 5.04 regards.

  • linux macvlan - stop from broadcasting hostname

    I am trying to simulate two different computers on one box, using the macvlan module (which is awesome, by the way) but I have one small problem; When I create the macvlan Ubuntu 11.10 very helpfully starts broadcasting its hostname on both interfaces, creating an amazing amount of confusion for everything that deals with hostnames. Does anyone know how to stop ubuntu from advertising its hostname on a certain interface? Thanks!

    I just got a really good deal on two Intel Quad Core Xeon L5420 processors and I have access to other deals on bare IBM servers (case+motherboard, no processor/ram/hdd). How can I easily find out what server or motherboard models will be compatible with this processor? I am ideally looking for a dual-processor motherboard and I see that it is socket LGA771. So I guess the underlying question is, how can I find what IBM motherboards (and servers) have dual socket LGA 771?

  • Can I limit remote desktop to a particular network card?

    I have two routers/internet connections connected to my PC. One is a slower connection with a fixed IP that I use for business, the other is a faster connection I use for day to day surfing. I have to use the fixed IP connection to log onto certain servers (due to security) to work but I'm finding that often my PC will try to use my other internet connection to connect which will get rejected (as it doesn't have the fixed IP). Can I limit remote desktop to use a particular network card to get around this problem. Note: I'm running Windows 7

The two values I have to play with are number of checks run and times the checks failed (outages). Is this a plausible way of calculating it?   • Innotop and Monit to kill thread using too much resources

    Instead of restarting the whole MYSQL process, sometimes I just want to kill the offending thread instead of making everything go down. Usually the spike in CPU is when a bot is crawling the first pages of pagination of my site (over 70.000 paginated results, 45 items per page). Is there a way I could do this automatically using monit and innotop? I couldn't find relevant information on Google, that's why I'm asking here. If these two tools aren't par to the task, which ones should I use?

  • Pasting to Excel from Word - stop a Word new line being converted into a new cell

    So I have a table in MS Word which has two columns. In the second column the text is spread on multiple lines, ie I have pressed 'Enter' to achieve this. When I paste into Excel, it converts these separate lines into separate cells. What I want it to do is to keep the lines in the same cell, just on different lines, ie what would happen if I were to press Alt+Enter in a cell in excel. How would I go about this?
