When I was in graduate school, I developed a Java system that displayed worked out the logics of getting the maximum coverage using the fewest resources (for example, the minimum number of soldiers [and positions] needed for a battlefield. It may seems not difficult, but it's a hard problem to solve, mathematically. Here I was, a freshman, who came up with an app  "solving" it. Some Master's students use my software today. It was then I began to believe in what I could do.OTN: What most inspires you about programming?I'm really inspired by the challenges and tension that comes from solving a complicated problems. Lately, I've been doing a new system focused on education and digital inclusion and was very gratifying to see it working and the results. I felt useful for the community. OTN: What are some things you would like to accomplish using Java?Java is a very strong platform and that gives us power to develop applications for different devices and purposes, from home automation with little microcontrollers to systems in big servers. I would like to build more systems that integrate the people life or different business contexts, from PCs to cell phones and tablets, ubiquitously. I think IT has reached a level where the current challenge is to make systems that leverage existing technologies that are present in daily life. Java gives us a very interesting set of options to put it into practice, especially in systems that require more strength.OTN: What technical insights into Java technology have been most important to you?I have really enjoyed the way that Java has evolved with Oracle, with new features added, many of them which were suggested by the community. Java 7 came with substantial improvements in the language syntax and it seems that Java 8 takes it even further. I also made some applications in JavaFX and liked the new version. The Java GUI is on a higher level than is offered out there. I saw some JavaFX prototypes running in modern tablets and I got excited. OTN: What would you like to be doing 10 years from now?I want my work to make a difference for individuals or an institution. It would be interesting to be improving one of the systems that I am making today. Recently I've been mixing my hobbies and work, playing with Arduino and home automation.   • "Unable to create OpenGL 3.3 context (flags 0, profile 1)"

    Trying to run any of the well-known McKesson's tutorials on a friend's laptop results in the aforementioned exception. I read that in order to run applications which use OpenGL 3.3 you must at least have an ATI HD or Nvidia 8xxx GPU series. He has an ATI HD class graphics processor which eliminates (maybe) this issue. Also, I read that this error may result in having old drivers. He updated his drivers but that didn't solve the problem. The tutorials are built as said in the book introduction and glsdk is installed. If more information is needed, say so and I will provide it. What are the other reasons for this kind of exception? And how can I fix them?

  • Sync profile/data/software for multiple computers?

    Is it possible to sync all the user settings (interface settings, program settings), as well as programs for multiple computers? Data is not as important, though the settings (which is technically data, but not that kind of data, like music, files...) and applications are. Also, it will not sync the drivers. (Example: 1 computer uses bumblebee and the other uses ATI catalyst, and maybe there's different network drivers.. etc.)

  • Poor backlink profile - search rankings not updated for 2+ months

    I am carrying out some work on a website that is a PR2 with a few good quality, relevant backlinks (PR4-6). It has a presence on Twitter that is updated regularly, a Google Places listing, and listings on some decent directories (Qype etc). The site was rebuilt into Drupal 7 two months ago, with all the basics done - URL rewriting, XML Sitemap submitted to Google, and most importantly, good quality, structured content. I've noticed that Google is still showing "old" URL's from the previous version of the site that was ditched 8 weeks ago. I think the site may be penalised under the Penguin update, as a previous SEO company created many low quality links from link farms/directories. My question is what the correct way to deal with this is. Bing Webmaster Tools can "disavow" links, and I guess I can attempt to contact the link farms to have them removed. I've already submitted a request to Google to request that we have the penalty removed as we're trying to tidy up a bad history. We submit updated sitemaps to Google and Bing daily, and have built some further decent quality, relevant links. Is there anything further I can do?

  • Tracking subdomains in the same profile as the main domain

    I have a site, let's call it http://www.example.com with a non-universal Google analytics account. Now we have to add new functionalities in a subdomain like https://subdomain.example.com as a micro site. On that subdomain the URL's will be something like https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar We can't change the requirements as both main site and mini-site use a different CMS/application. This is strictly a Google Analytics question. But we need to count pageviews and events that happen in that subdomain (with URLs like https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar) as belonging to the main domain. So pageviews and events in https://subdomain.example.com?param1=foo&param2=bar need to be recorded as if they happened in http://www.example.com/path/to/whatever/I/want Fortunately we have full control on JavaScript in the main domain site and in the subdomain site too. How can we make this work? Do we need to change tracking code both in the main domain and subdomains? Do we need to reconfigure Google Analytics? Please note again that we do not want to create a new view for the subdomain. Both mini-site and main site should be in the same account, property and view.

  • Google Analytics: tracking subdomains for a profile defined for a subdomain

    Hope you can help. We have set up a single property under our Google Analytics account. That property's default URL is set to subdomain1.example.com. We would now like to track multiple subdomains for example.com, under the same property. Seems easy enough: we just need to add _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'example.com']); to our tracking code, right? But my question is: does it matter if a) we don't need to track www.example.com (this is tracked under a seperate account and property) and b) the default URL for our property is set to subdomain1.example.com? Will either of these have any impact on data collection?

  • Clone Unity Dock for All Users?

    I've spent 3 days trying to figure out how to clone the Unity dock from my firstuser profile in Ubuntu 12.04 to all of the other profiles I'm hoping to create. I've read where the /etc/skel folder contents get populated to all new profiles but this doesn't seem to include the dock or the desktop folders and icons. I've also copied the entire contents of my /home/firstuser folder to my /home/seconduser folder (including .* files) but the dock is still showing the stock icons and not the icons I've designated in my firstuser profile dock. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Upload photos to Facebook page (not personal profile)

    A couple of the various Linux photo organizer applications (Shotwell & f-spot, at least) let you upload pictures to Facebook, but as far as I can see, that's limited only to albums on your personal page. Am I just missing something, and it is actually possible to use either Shotwell or f-spot to upload to albums in a page you are an administrator for? If not, is there another Picasa-type program that has this feature?

  • Linux bash: when to use egrep instead of grep?

    Hi all : I am preparing for a Linux terminal assessment now, I tried to Google and found most resources are referring to the basic "grep" rather than the more powerful "egrep" -- well, that is at least what the professor said in lecture. I am always working with small samples so performance tuning is a thing too far away. So basically I'd like to know are there any areas where I must switch to egrep to do it in a better way? Is it safe to work with basic "grep" as for now? will there be potential risks? Sorry about my limited knowledge on Linux shell commands, the man page looks like a maze to me and honestly I haven't put much time in understanding all the features both command provide.

    I want to trap a signal send from Script-A.sh to Script-B.sh so in Script-A.sh i use the command (Send SIGINT to Script-B.sh) kill -2 $PID_Script-B.sh And in Script-B.sh i catch the signal and call function Clean trap 'Clean' 2 It does not work, instead the Script-B.sh is killed right away without performing the Clean !! What i notice also is that if i want to send SIGINT from terminal to any script that traps it, a ctrl-c will be catched correctly, but not if i specify the signal via the command kill -2 $pid_of_script Any idea about the difference between the two method to send the SIGINT (ctrl-c VS kill -2 $pid_of_script), and how i can send a SIGINT from a script to another ? (It's a little bit annoying to type the PIDs every time and I really would like to learn :) ) Thanks a lot.

  • bash: how to know NUM option in grep -A -B "on the fly" ?

    Hello everyone: I am trying to analyze my agent results from a collection of 20 txt files here. If you wonder about the background info, please go see my page, what I am doing here is just one step. Basically I would like to take only my agent's result out of the messy context, so I've got this command for a single file: cat run15.txt | grep -A 50 -E '^Agent Name: agent10479475' | grep -B 50 '^==' This means : after the regex match, continue forward by 50 lines, stop, then match a line separator starts with "==", go back by 50 lines, if possible (This would certainly clash the very first line). This approach depends on the fact that the hard-coded line number counter 50, would be just fine to get exactly one line separator. And this would not work if I do the following code: cat run*.txt | grep -A 50 -E '^Agent Name: agent10479475' | grep -B 50 '^==' The output would be a mess... My question is: how to make sure grep knows exactly when to stop going forward, and when to stop getting backward? Any suggestion or hint is much appreciated.

  • Regex find and copy in bash (preserving folder structure)?

    I have a folder with a bunch of log files. Each set of log files is in a folder detailing the time and date that the program was run. Inside these log folders, I've got some video files that I want to extract. All I want is the video files, nothing else. I tried using this command to only copy the video files, but it didn't work because a directory didn't exist. .rmv is the file extension of the files I want. $ find . -regex ".*.rmv" -type f -exec cp '{}' /copy/to/here/'{}' If I have a folder structure such as: |- root | |--- folder1 | |----- file.rmv | |--- folder2 | |----- file2.rmv How can I get it to copy to copy/to/here with it copying the structure of folder1 and folder2 in the destination directory?

  • is there a way to switch bash or zsh from emacs mode to vi mode with a keystroke

    I'd like to be able to switch temporarily from emacs mode to vi mode, since vi mode is sometimes better, but I'm usually half-way through typing something before I realize I want I don't want to switch permanently to vi mode, because I normally prefer emacs mode on the command line, mostly because it's what I'm used to, and over the years many of the keystrokes have become second nature. (As an editor I generally use emacs in viper mode, so that I can use both vi and emacs keystrokes, since I found myself accidentally using them in vi all the time, and screwing things up, and because in some cases I find vi keystrokes more memorable and handy, and in other cases emacs.)
