  • can we get the penultimate exception that occurred from an mdmp or hdmp in windbg

    - by Sammy
Hi, I got a crash dump (both mdmp and hdmp) for my application (written in C++) captured using dr. watson. After analyzing the dumps through windbg, I concluded that the crash had occurred in the catch() itself :) What I need to know is what exception caused the the failure in the first place i.e. I need that penultimate(last but one th) exception that had occurred. I know I could get the same by some other ways, but is there a specific command with which we could get the list of errors\exceptions occurring from the dump file. Thanks. --Samrat Patil

  • Is there Any Limit on stack memory!

    - by Vikas
I was going through one of the threads. A program crashed because It had declared an array of 10^6 locally inside a function. Reason being given was memory allocation failure on stack leads to crash. when same array was declared globally, it worked well.(memory on heap saved it). Now for the moment ,Let us suppose, stack grows downward and heap upwards. We have: ---STACK--- ---HEAP---- Now , I believe that if there is failure in allocation on stack, it must fail on heap too. So my question is :Is there any limit on stack size? (crossing the limit caused the program to crash). Or Am I missing something?

  • Symbol info in .app file

    - by tech74
Hi, i've recently released an app to the App store, i went to have a look at some crash logs in Organiser of my app downloaded from the app store and noticed that there is symbol info in my crash log - Shock Horror I definitely remember setting some strip symbols flags when i built the distribution build (which was copied from release) so can't for the life of me work out how there is this symbol info there. I never shipped a .SYM file to apple just the .app. So whats going on. Surely apple would have warned me about this wouldn't they??

  • Categories & singelton in cocoa

    - by Nava Carmon
Hi, I have a SingletonClass, which has only one instance. I want to expand it and add to it a category (MoreFeatures). I created a source SingletonClass+MoreFeatures, which interface/implementation looks like that: @interface SingletonClass (MoreFeatures) - (void) feature; @end @implementation SingletonClass (MoreFeatures) - (void) feature() { } @end When I created my SingletonClass i followed the Apple's example of Singleton implementation in cocoa. This singleton resides in a project B, which is a dependency of a bigger project A. I can call for [[SingletonClass sharedInstance] foo] from a source in project A and it works in case that function foo is located in SingletonClass interface/implementation. When I try to call [[SingletonClass sharedInstance] feature] from a source in project A, I get a crash, which says that there is no method feature for class SingletonClass... Why it happens? Thanks a lot, Nava EDIT: The crash happens in a runtime. The category file source resides in project B along with a SingletonClass

  • Non-IE6 IE7 hack

    - by thermal7
I managed to create a page the crashes IE6 and 7 regularly as per here: http://raven-seo-tools.com/blog/2675/crash-ie6-with-only-css I have a solution for non-IE browsers (display: inline-block), but the only way to get IE6/7 working is to use different CSS (display: inline). Normally I would have other browsers use inline-block, then in a seperate IE67 CSS file I would set display to inline. The problem is IE67 crash as soon as they reach the display: inline-block line, so I need a way to hide this code from IE6 and 7 but not other browsers.

  • Flash player debugger plugin crashes on Mac OS [tried many version of the plugin and browsers, all o

    - by Ali
Dear All, I recently started using Mac OS X for a flex/actionscript project and having a problem with flash player debugger plugin for the browsers: OSX: 10.6.3 Browsers I tried: firefox, safari and chrome Flashplayer debug "Flash Player 10 Plugin content debugger (Intel-based Macs) Whenever I open a page containing a flash content, my browser crashes due to flash player plugin's crash. I checked the version of my flash player debug plugin with http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html and as the version checker is written in flash, my browser crashes a few seconds later. I am using version 10,0,42,2 (debug edition: yes) This is what I see in the crash log: Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x000000001887e3e4 Any ideas how can I track this issue ? Cheers, -A

  • c99 goto past initialization

    - by R Samuel Klatchko
While debugging a crash, I came across this issue in some code: int func() { char *p1 = malloc(...); if (p1 == NULL) goto err_exit; char *p2 = malloc(...); if (p2 == NULL) goto err_exit; ... err_exit: free(p2); free(p1); return -1; } The problem occurs when the first malloc fails. Because we jump across the initialization of p2, it contains random data and the call to free(p2) can crash. I would expect/hope that this would be treated the same way as in C++ where the compiler does not allow a goto to jump across an initialization. My question: is jumping across an initialization allowed by the standard or is this a bug in gcc's implementation of c99?

  • Run intent DevicePolicyManager.ACTION_ADD_DEVICE_ADMIN from a service

    - by Zorb
I have a service and I want the service promote to enable it as Device Admin, until now I launched this kind of UI interactions from the service like Intent intent2 = new Intent(); intent2.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); intent2.setAction(android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW); intent2.setDataAndType(uri, "application/vnd.android.package-archive"); context.startActivity(intent2); and it works, but with DevicePolicyManager I can't find the way: Intent intent = new Intent(DevicePolicyManager.ACTION_ADD_DEVICE_ADMIN); intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); intent.putExtra(DevicePolicyManager.EXTRA_DEVICE_ADMIN, mAdminName); intent.putExtra(DevicePolicyManager.EXTRA_ADD_EXPLANATION, "some text."); context.startActivity(intent); does't work: do not promote nothing but also do not crash. Without intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); It simply crash because this code is inside a tread inside a service. Ideas?

  • python json_encode throws KeyError exception

    - by MattM
    In a unit test case that I am running, I get a KeyError exception on the 4th json object in the json text below. I went through the sub-objects and found that it was the "cpuid" object that is the offending object, but I am completely at a loss as to what is wrong with the formatting. response = self.app.post( '/machinestats', params=dict(record=self.json_encode([ {"type": "crash", "instance_id": "xxx", "version": "0.2.0", "build_id": "unknown", "crash_text": "Gah!"}, {"type": "machine_info", "machine_info": "I'm awesome.", "version": "0.2.0", "build_id": "unknown", "instance_id": "yyy"}, {"machine_info": "Soup", "crash_text": "boom!", "version": "0.2.0", "build_id": "unknown", "instance_id": "zzz", "type": "crash"}, {"build_id" : "unknown", "cpu_brand" : "intel", "cpu_count" : 4, "cpuid": { "00000000": {"eax" :123,"ebx" :456, "ecx" :789,"edx" :321}, "00000001": {"eax" :123,"ebx" :456, "ecx" :789,"edx" :321}}, "driver_installed" : True, "instance_id" : "yyy", "version" : "0.2.0", "machine_info" : "I'm awesome.", "os_version" : "linux", "physical_memory_mib" : 1024, "product_loaded" : True, "type" : "machine_info", "virtualization_advertised" : True} ])))

  • Singelton on iPhone Simulator vs Singelton on real Device

    - by Helge Becker
I am using a Singelton for some shared stuff. In the simulator, the app crashes ocasionally. Tracking the crash down shows that the the properties of my Singelton became dealocated. Those crashes never happend on a real device. Does the iPHone simulator handle memory managemend different? GC maybe? Changed the singelton to match this pattern. The iPhone Simulator dont crash now, but I am not sure about the memory handling on the real device. I assume that this solution will cause problems. What do you think?

  • Low memory with 640Kb of live bytes?

    - by Chiodo
Hello, i've a problem with my application that need to display a lot of images and video. After running ObjectAlloc tool, i see that the live bytes is 640Kb and the overall memory is 31,54Mb when the application crash. In the organizer i get a "low memory" report so i guess the app crashed because low memory but the ObjectAllocation data don't make any sense to me... Any ideas? • Importing a spreadsheet, but having trouble.

    - by Chris Phelps
I have a form that allows a user to import a spreadsheet. This spreadsheet is generally static when it comes to column headers, but now the users want to be able to include an optional column (called Notes). My code crashes when I try to read the column from the spreadsheet if it doesn't exist. Dim objCommand As New OleDbCommand() objCommand = ExcelConnection() 'function that opens spreadsheet and returns objCommand Dim reader As OleDbDataReader reader = objCommand.ExecuteReader() While reader.Read() Dim Employee As String = Convert.ToString(reader("User")) Dim SerialNUM As String = Convert.ToString(reader("serialno")) **Dim Notes As String = Convert.ToString(reader("notes"))** If the spreadsheet contains a Notes column, all goes well. If not, crash. How can I check to see if the Notes column exists in the spreadsheet to avoid the crash?

  • Can you detect if and excel find and replace is active during worksheet_change()?

    - by John Griffiths
Hi I've just crashed excel using amazon spreadsheet to update feed. When doing find and replace [replace all] with 2 cells selected after the first replacement the worksheet_change() function finished with the whole spreadsheet selected. This meant that the replacements took place outside of the original area. Unfortunatly the replcement text included the find text and each replacement re-selected the entire area excel ran until it ran out of space then crashed. Pressing control-break brings up the vba dialog STOP/CONTINUE/DEBUG. DEBUG is greyed out as amazon had protected the sheet. STOP would stop one run but would then continue to crash. CONTINUE would switch back to the current change and continue to crash. Is there any way to detect if a find&replace operation is in action whilst executing excel vba? Regards John

  • Any recommended VC++ settings for better PDB analysis on release builds

    - by Brian R. Bondy
Are there any VC++ settings I should know about to generate better PDB files that contain more information? I have a crash dump analysis system in place based on the project crashrpt. Also, my production build server has the source code installed on the D:\, but my development machine has the source code on the C:\. I entered the source path in the VC++ settings, but when looking through the call stack of a crash, it doesn't automatically jump to my source code. I believe if I had my dev machine's source code on the D:\ it would work.

  • Send a variable on the heap to another thread

    - by user1201889
I have a strange problem in C++. An address of a Boolean gets "destroyed" but it doesn't get touched. I know that there are beater way's to accomplish what I try to do, but I want to know what I do wrong. I have a main class; this main class contains a vector of another class. There is a strange problem when a new instance gets created of this object. This is how my code works: There will start a thread when the constructor gets called of the “2nd”object. This thread gets as Parameter a struct. This is the struct: struct KeyPressData { vector<bool> *AutoPressStatus; vector<int> *AutoPressTime; bool * Destroy; bool * Ready; }; The struct gets filled in the constructor: MultiBoxClient::MultiBoxClient() { //init data DestroyThread = new bool; ReadyThread = new bool; AutoThreadData = new KeyPressData; //Reseting data *DestroyThread = false; *ReadyThread = false; //KeyPressData configurating AutoThreadData->AutoPressStatus = &AutoPressStatus; AutoThreadData->AutoPressTime = &AutoPressTime; AutoThreadData->Destroy = DestroyThread; AutoThreadData->Ready = ReadyThread; //Start the keypress thread CreateThread(NULL,NULL,(LPTHREAD_START_ROUTINE)AutoKeyThread,AutoThreadData,NULL,NULL); } As long as the constructor is running will the program run fine. But when the constructor closes the address of the “AutoThreadData-Destroy” will get corrupted. The program will crash when I call the value of the pointer. void WINAPI AutoKeyThread(void * ThreadData) { KeyPressData * AutoThreadData = (KeyPressData*)ThreadData; while(true) { if(*AutoThreadData->Destroy == true) //CRASH { *AutoThreadData->Ready = true; return; } Sleep(100); } } What did I test: I logged the address of the AutoThreadData and the AutoThreadData-Destroy when the constrcutor is running and clossed; the AutoThreadData address is equal to AutoThreadData when the constructor is closed. So there is no problem here. The address of AutoThreadData-Destroy gets destroyed when the constructor is closed. But how can this happen? The Boolean is on the heap and the KeyPressData struct (AutoThreadData) is on the heap. Destroy before: 00A85328 Destroy after: FEEEFEEE Can someone maby explain why this crash? I know that I can send a pointer to my class to the thread. But I want to know what goes wrong here. That way I can learn from my mistakes. Could someone help me with this problem? Thanks!

  • Debugging compiled .NET 2.0 application

    - by brovar
I don't know if I'll pass all the necessary information here, but I've only been asked to post this question here and I'm not entirely onto the matter. There is a .NET Framework 2.0 application compiled in the Debug mode with the parameter jitDebugging set to true in app.config <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" /> After any crash we get the dialog box allowing us to send a report or to debug the program. When we choose to debug and select proper VS, the IDE starts but with the announcement: No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame. The source code cannot be displayed. and Disassembly cannot be displayed in run mode. Is there any possiblity to see the code or the spot where the crash has occured?

  • About setStatusBarHidden

    - by iTarek
Today my app approved, but I got emails from users says it crash. I figured out that [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setStatusBarHidden:YES withAnimation: UIStatusBarAnimationSlide]; Is the problem, Because users have firmware 3.1.x this API is not working and app crash. So I have replace it with if ([[[UIDevice currentDevice] systemVersion] floatValue]>=3.2) [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setStatusBarHidden:YES withAnimation: UIStatusBarAnimationSlide]; else [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setStatusBarHidden:YES animated:YES]; My questions... Is what I did the best solution? Why XCODE did not warn me that SetStatusBarHidden withAnimation is not in 3.0 while I set my Traget OS firmware 3.0? Do I have to check on every API to see if it is working with my Target OS? Thank you

  • How can I implement a tail-recursive list append?

    - by martingw
A simple append function like this (in F#): let rec app s t = match s with | [] -> t | (x::ss) -> x :: (app ss t) will crash when s becomes big, since the function is not tail recursive. I noticed that F#'s standard append function does not crash with big lists, so it must be implemented differently. So I wondered: How does a tail recursive definition of append look like? I came up with something like this: let rec comb s t = match s with | [] -> t | (x::ss) -> comb ss (x::t) let app2 s t = comb (List.rev s) t which works, but looks rather odd. Is there a more elegant definition?

  • BSOD Code 16, artifacts all over the place (gtx 260)

    - by belinea
I have a following, quite dated rig E8400 Core 2 Duo cpu Intel Dragontail Peak DP35DP motherboard on Intel Bearlake P35 chipset 4GB ram Geforce 260gtx Corsair 650W PSU Windows 7 64 bit The following things has happened in the last few days. I first decided to update my Nvidia drivers to the latest version. That was 4 days ago. PC worked fine for 2 days and I was able to play few games as well without any problems. Then 2 days ago a first crash happened while playing the new XCOM game. BSOD code 16. Just the blue screen, no artifacts. PC rebooted and worked well again, I continued playing this game for another 2 hours and went to sleep. Next evening I tried to play some BF3 multiplayer (use to play on LOW settings). Approx. 10 minutes into the game red/pink-ish artifacts appeared on the screen and game quit to desktop. Restarted the game and another 3-4 minutes afterwards another crash to desktop but this time followed shortly by BSOD Code 16. From that moment I started to seeing artifacts on random startups, including Windows loading screen and the BIOS itself. Windows would still load but soon enough it would BSOD on a simple task like opening a Internet browser. Today I get tons of artifacts (little small red dashes all over the screen) on BIOS, loading screen, normal Windows mode as well as safe mode. I suspect it wouldn't be drivers but I tried removing and sweeping them entirely in the safe mode. PC would still start with artifacts all over the place but would load the normal mode, just without the driver, in the default lowest resolution. As soon as proper Nvidia drivers are installed though and PC rebooted, Windows doesn't load at all as BSOD now appears on loading screen. However, again, if I go to safe mode and remove drivers, normal mode launches fine. So obviously crash happens only on high resolution. I opened my machine this morning and gave it a proper cleaning even though it wasn't heavily dusted. It didn't help and number of artifacts seems to increase with every PC restart. I write these words in safe mode, which works, but I have to look through all the red dots and dashes. I don't have built in GPU chipset so I can't try removing my Geforce card nor can I borrow A GPU from anyone else. What are my options? I was looking into getting a completely new rig around Christmas so I'm not freaking out about this. If everything points to hardware issue I may simply decide to get the new machine earlier and don't bother with fixing this one. However it would be great to learn more if this is indeed situation that has slim chances of getting sorted. I realize BSOD Code 16 is rather popular topic online but every story seems a bit different and there can be number of issues with it. Hence a new thread.

  • Clarification On Write-Caching Policy, Its Underlying Options And How It Applies To Hard Drives And Solid-State Drives

    - by Boris_yo
In last week after doing more research on subject matter, I have been wondering about what I have been neglecting all those years to understand write-caching policy, always leaving it on default setting. Write-caching policy improves writing performance and consists of write-back caching and write-cache buffer flushing. This is how I understand all the above, but correct me if I erred somewhere: Write-through cache / Write-through caching itself is not a part of write caching policy per se and it's when data is written to both cache and storage device so if Windows will need that data later again, it is retrieved from cache and not from storage device which means only improved read performance as there is no need for waiting for storage device to read required data again. Since data is still written to storage device, write performance isn't improved and represents no risk of data loss or corruption in case of power failure or system crash while only data in cache gets lost. This option seems to be enabled by default and is recommended for removable devices with no need to use function of "Safely Remove Hardware" on user's part. Write-back caching is similar to above but without writing data to storage device, periodically releasing data from cache and writing to storage device when it is idle. In my opinion this option improves both read and write performance but represents risk if power failure or system crash occurs with the outcome of not only losing data eventually to be written to storage device, but causing file inconsistencies or corrupted file system. Write-back caching cannot be enabled together with write-through caching and it is not recommended to be enabled if no backup power supply is availabe. Write-cache buffer flushing I reckon is similar to write-back caching but enables immediate release and writing of data from cache to storage device right before power outage occurs but I don't know if it applies also to occasional system crash. This option seem to be complementary to write-back cache reducing or potentially eliminating risk of data loss or corruption of file system. I have questions about relevance of last 2 options to today's modern SSDs in order to get best performance and with less wear on SSDs: I know that traditional hard drives come with onboard cache (I wonder what type of cache that is), but do SSDs also come with cache? Assuming they do, is this cache faster than their NAND flash and system RAM and worth taking the risk of utilizing it by enabling write-back cache? I read somewhere that generally storage device's cache is faster than RAM, but I want to be sure. Additionally I read that write-caching should be enabled since current data that is to be written later to NAND flash is kept for a while in cache and provided there is data that gets modified a lot before finally being written, holding of this data and its periodic release reduces its write times to SSD thereby reducing its wearing. Now regarding to write-cache buffer flushing, I heard that SSD controllers are so fast by themselves that enabling this option is not required, because they manage flushing. However, once again, I don't know if SSDs have their own onboard cache and whether or not it is faster than their NAND flash and system RAM because if it is, keeping this option enabled would make sense. Recently I have posted question about issue with my Intel 330 SSD 120GB which was main reason to do deeper research having suspicion of write-caching policy being the culprit of SSD's freezing issue assuming data being released is what causes freezes. Currently I have write-cache enabled and write-cache buffer flushing disabled because I believe SSD controller's management of write-cache flushing and Windows write-cache buffer flushing are conflicting with each other: Since I want to troubleshoot in small steps to finally determine the source of issue, I have decided to start with write-caching policy and the move to drivers, switching to AHCI later on and finally disabling DIPM (device initiated power management) through registry modification thanks to @TomWijsman
