• Repeat row headers after Page Break

  The lead developer of the FO engine send me by chance an email about a REALLY nice feature I did not know about. Did you ever encounter a long table with merged cells, where the merged cell went on to the next page? While column headers are by default repeated on the next page, row headers are not. Tables with group-left column and pivot tables are prime examples where this problem occurs. I have seen reports where merged cells could go over multiple pages and you would need to back to find the row header on previous pages. The BI Publisher RTF templates have a special tag you can added to a merged cell to repeat the contents after each page break. You just need to add the following (wordy) tag to the next merged table cell: true Example: 2nd page of report before adding the tag 2nd page of report after adding the tag.   To me the ultimate beauty in working as a developer is the fact that given a nice CV, your are going to find a new job, everywhere at any time. So I would like to ask if somebody here as experience in working while travelling for example. Or job-hopping from metropolis to metropolis every, say, six months. For example I have been investigating for how to get to Brazil. But it seems like that working as an employee in Brazil would be no option, b/c it takes a lot of time/money/effort to get the proper visas and permissions. So the only practical solution would be to freelance and the just travel, while getting your job done wherever you are. I bet my ass that there are loads of IT-guys out there and on here who know exactly what I am talking about. I'm looking forward to interesting ideas and stories.

• Why is the tooltip hiding Dash Search on 12.04?

  Can I disable the tooltip shown at the side of the Launcher icon when hovered by the mouse. These are nice, but I want to disable them, because when I press "Dash Home" button on the launcher, then want to write something on the dash, I can't see the letters because of the tooltip. How can I disable the Unity tooltip from hiding search string in dash? I am using Ubuntu 12.04. I have given a screenshot of the launcher. My problem is basically with this Update 1 I have given advice to follow this answer in chat discussion, but nothing has changed. Update 2 As an answer suggests, I updated unity to the latest version. It is now unity 5.12.0. as the below output indicates $ unity --version unity 5.12.0

• MythTV GUI problems

  Hi, I'm using MythTV to watch TV on my ubuntu computer and I'm having a problem with the resolution. It seems that the GUI resolution is matched with the channel resolution, so If I'm watching a HD channel, I get a nice GUI but If I'm watching a SD channel, then it's crap. A couple of screenshots to show the difference: High Definition Channel: Standard Definition Channel: I haven't found any similar issue in the internet and neither an option in the settings menu of MythTV (backend and frontend). I have another small problem that you can see in the first screenshot, the channel name is cut (it shows "Telemadri" and the last letter is not completely shown). Anyone know how can I fix this too?   Sometimes I write blog posts mainly so that I can find stuff when I need it later. This is such a blog post. Of late I have been writing lots of deployment scripts and I am fan of putting big labels into deployment scripts (which, these days, reside in SSDT) so one can easily see what’s going on as they execute. • Doing two Declarative Operations with One Button

  You can file the below video under "things that get asked on OTN a lot". With ADF it is very easy to drag an operation to a page to create a button that activate it. But what if you want a single button to invoke two operations? For example have a button that does a "Delete" as well as a "Commit". The way to do it is to add an action binding, and then overwrite the button function in a backing bean to call the additional action. The nice thing is that JDeveloper will create all the binding code for you in the backing bean - all you need to do is duplicate it. Here is a quick demo:

• Unity 2d support dropped in 12.10, what now?

  So its been announced. Ubuntu is dropping unity 2d support. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for two things that are important to me. 1) A working system Unity is nice, i try to use it quite often. But it lags. 2) Support for older hardware. I also have old computers. You can imagine how they would work with unity if my current laptop is slog in Ubuntu. I guess i could use another desktop environment/ window manager , like switching to fluxbox. Anyone have any suggestion ideas/solutions on how to proceed with Ubuntu in the future? All insights welcome

• Raycasting tutorial / vector math question

  I'm checking out this nice raycasting tutorial at http://lodev.org/cgtutor/raycasting.html and have a probably very simple math question. In the DDA algorithm I'm having trouble understanding the calcuation of the deltaDistX and deltaDistY variables, which are the distances that the ray has to travel from 1 x-side to the next x-side, or from 1 y-side to the next y-side, in the square grid that makes up the world map (see below screenshot). In the tutorial they are calculated as follows, but without much explanation: //length of ray from one x or y-side to next x or y-side double deltaDistX = sqrt(1 + (rayDirY * rayDirY) / (rayDirX * rayDirX)); double deltaDistY = sqrt(1 + (rayDirX * rayDirX) / (rayDirY * rayDirY)); rayDirY and rayDirX are the direction of a ray that has been cast. How do you get these formulas? It looks like pythagorean theorem is part of it, but somehow there's division involved here. Can anyone clue me in as to what mathematical knowledge I'm missing here, or "prove" the formula by showing how it's derived?

I want to know more about the different stages of software development, I know about coding already, but I don't know much about unit testing, version control, integration, design...etc. P.S. it'd be nice if the book wasn't a thousand pages long. Edit: I'm looking for an introductory text, not a book about the latest trends in software development.

• What 'ordinary' packages does 'sudo apt-get purge wine*' removes?

  Ok, here's one silly question - I've actually run that command trying to lose configuraion of current installation of wine, so I can install it from zero. I didn't quite read but I've noticed that some packages that 'shouldn't be uninstalled' were getting uninstalled, like compiz for example... Now, my problem is that I don't know what are the other packages that got uninstalled. I can't enter Ubuntu at all. Help, please. Command was sudo apt-get purge wine*. Thank you. Please be nice; I was really tired :)

• Convert DVD to MKV (et al) without transcoding/recompression

  Like a lot of people, I have a lot of DVDs. But we also have a stupid amount of disk space and a media centre (Boxee) so the DVDs are getting less and less use. It would be nice to convert our DVDs into something more relevant to our needs. I've dabbled with DVD ripping before but whereas I'd usually transcode down to a smaller picture size with a better video compression algorithm, this takes a silly amount of time. I don't have a couple of hours available for each disk. (Sidebar: is there dedicated, Linux-friendly hardware to improve h264 encoding performance?) So I was wondering if there's anything that take the DVD filesystem, De-CSS it, and then stitch together any the VOBs that make up the main part of the film and package that up in a wrapping format like MKV. A bonus would be if it could grab the subtitles and stick them in too but that's not a requirement as Boxee can grab the subtitles online if it needs to.

Assuming I have a firm grasp of the language, plus all the basic programmer attributes (good communication skills/sense of humour/hygiene etc), what should I concentrate on learning to maximize my chances? I have a DBProject and it would be nice if when I publish from my DEV to my TEST it what automatically copy the schema and data from DEV to TEST.. is that what this tab in visual studio is for ? On PROD I would never want to copy the data over but maybe I would change the schema and want to move that schema to PROD.. so is that what this tab is for ? For now we are using WEB DEPLOY but none of these database options.. We are manually using DATA COMPARE to sync changes on the various databases/DBproject... Any advice?

  I have a site with a phpbb forum. I'm working on adding a dokuwiki wiki to the site, and I would like to integrate the two. The phpbb forum is running phpbb 3.0.8, and the dokuwiki installation is running 2011-05-25a "Rincewind". Basically what I want is: for users to be able to log into the dokuwiki wiki with their phpbb account. Users should only be able to register from the phpbb registration interface. Cookie integration would be nice, but is not required. Is there any way to do this?

• What GUI are there for Axel or for other such downloaders that use multiple connections?

  In order to enjoy my maximum download speed, I use and like Axel very much, but from time to time I download multiple files and having so many windows opened has some disadvantages. I use Axel with FlashGot in Firefox (Seamonkey etc) but I would like to add a GUI for that, and possibly have multiple downloads in a nice list as in any civil downloader. I am not aware of a GUI for Axel that works. Axel-kapt crashes. (A question on how to use it properly in Ubuntu got only one somewhat dismissive answer by yours truly...) Gaxel just opens a window with empty fields that I have to manually fill (which beats the purpose). I would like to know how to install something like Gwget which is described here, in an old answer as an alternative (but Gwget itself might be too old too). Help!

• Predicting advantages of database denormalization

  I was always taught to strive for the highest Normal Form of database normalization, and we were taught Bernstein's Synthesis algorithm to achieve 3NF. This is all very well and it feels nice to normalize your database, knowing that fields can be modified while retaining consistency. However, performance may suffer. That's why I am wondering whether there is any way to predict the speedup/slowdown when denormalizing. That way, you can build your list of FD's featuring 3NF and then denormalize as little as possible. I imagine that denormalizing too much would waste space and time, because e.g. giant blobs are duplicated or it because harder to maintain consistency because you have to update multiple fields using a transaction. Summary: Given a 3NF FD set, and a set of queries, how do I predict the speedup/slowdown of denormalization? Link to papers appreciated too.
