• Develop for Desktop and mobile use?

  I am in the very beginning of developing an app / desktop program. I want it to be cross-platform and possibly also as a tablet version (preferably Android Icecream sandwich). Note that I need to run it offline. I thought about the following approaches: ADOBE Air, since I do not need much performance. Plus I did some web programming in the past which might be of some use. Afaik it would run on OS X and Windows and should run on mobile OSes, too. Qt. Found some nice Qt based desktop recently and read it also works on android. Plus I like the SDK. HTML5 / JS. Again my web background should help me here. I wont need no sever side scripts, thus it should work without installing anything but a browser. How easy could this be converted into an Android app? There might be a plethora of other (better) ways to do it, but I haven't thought of them yet. Can you help out? How would you create such an application. Would it be better to do some pure desktop client and then create tablet versions? Would you rather start to create a website and worry later on how to turn into an app?

• Awesome and LXDE desktop managers messed up KDE

  I saw a desktop manager named "Awesome" earlier on Google+, and thought I'd give it a try. In short, I didn't like it, but it got me wondering what other desktops were like, which I hadn't tried. The first one to come to mind was LXDE. I installed that, and tried it. I wasn't a big fan, so I just went to log back into KDE. Only, when I log in, everything is screwy. My theme is weird (although, according to system settings, it is still the same). All the categories and application short cuts in the KMenu are gone, except my favorites, which are now renamed with the "short name", it seems. I know these things are global resources, so it is very likely that one of these Window Managers screwed it up, but I need it fixed. Actually, it seems that after restarting the theme problem fixed itself, but the KMenu items disappearing is still a problem. Does anyone know where these items are stored? (I know they are are just .desktop files somewhere, IIRC, but I don't remember where they are usually stored so I can see if they are still there). I'm hoping it's just a matter of a broken link or something somewhere, not deleted shortcuts... :/ In summary: Any ideas on what caused this? Do you know how to fix the KMenu, or at least where the .desktop shortcuts are stored for the KMenu so I can see if they still exist (crosses fingers).

• Media keys play/pause globally worked in 12.10, not in 13.10

  Laptop media keys On Asus n55sf laptop, there are a dedicated keys for volume up, volume down, mute, [play/pause], stop, launch (plus a dozen Fn-key combinations). In 12.10 most worked. (Overall is seems unrelated to desktop environment used, stating it for the sake of completeness.) On Ubuntu 12.10 under XFCE they just worked. That is: when a player like rhythmbox or totem was started, it would alternate between play and pause. Interestingly, if several were started, they would alternate independently. E.g. use mouse to pause rhythmbox, launch totem, and one hit on [play/pause] key would pause one and resume the other. Keys Next,Previous and Stop worked as expected in any program. In 13.10 most still work, but play/skip related ignored. On Xubuntu 13.10 (XFCE too) the volume keys work but the [play/pause], stop, next and prev are ignored. Not tried regular Ubuntu 13.10 (Unity). Search before you ask Here are a few facts: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Architecture is ummutable and mentions Ubuntu 9.10. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting is also outdated as it mentions /usr/share/doc/udev/README.keymap.txt which no longer exists. On 12.10 and 13.10 versions, at XFCE level (as visible by xfconf-query or using xfce4-settings-manager) there are a couple of shortcut for keys like XF86Calculator or XF86TouchpadToggle but nothing related to volume prev/next/play/stop, which is okay. XF86Audio substring doesn't appear in /etc (which is normal) Kernel-level test: "showkey -s" on console shows that keys Next,Play/Pause,Previous,Stop are keycodes 163,164,165,166. Nothing relevant in /etc about that. Reports https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/1072371 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1012365 suggest to adjust at udev level. Alas, the udev tutorials I found ( e.g. https://wiki.debian.org/udev ) don't even mention keyboard. A thread in french seems to deal with a similar issue: https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1395051. @sudo evtest /dev/input/event3@, in X as well as on plain console, reports events on key pressed and repeats, but nothing when pressing those media keys. Is udev a dead end ? Questions How did it work in 12.10 ? Through udev ? Something else ? Any other hint ?

• How to switch 'default' sound device controlled by hardware keys in Xubuntu?

  I installed xubuntu-desktop on a 12.04 Ubuntu upgrade after finding Gnome3 lacking. I've mostly been happy, but I've found an odd and frustrating bug. My laptop has two sound 'outputs' - an HDMI-out plug I never use, and the onboard speakers/headphones. For some reason, the hardware keys have been mapped to the HDMI output, even if I set it as 'fallback' in pavucontrol, and notify-osd only displays changes in the HDMI output (though the panel indicator volume control controls onboard sound). I'd ideally like both hardware keys and notify-osd to be looking at the onboard sound, though if I can't get notify-osd it's an acceptable loss. Having to click through a bunch of stuff to change volume is driving me crazy, though. Googling suggested that it /may/ be a Pulseaudio/ALSA conflict, but the hardware keys seem to change at least indicated volume in pavucontrol for HDMI as expected (I don't have an HDMI cable to test actual sound output)

  ssh'ing to my Ubuntu machine automatically attaches an existing screen session and detaching ends my ssh session What I want is to be able to ssh to my Ubuntu machine without automatically attaching to the screen session on that machine. Or at least, I should be able to to detach from that screen session w/o ending my ssh session .. right? Doesn't seem to work. This so that I can attempt to run firefox --display <whichever one is being forwarded to my ssh session>, so that I can debug a website that the remote Ubuntu machine is running (via localhost). Best case scenario is that I could just remote-desktop to my Ubuntu machine. But it's not set up to allow remote-desktop, and I see no way to set it up remotely via shell/ssh. Also, it sounds like you need a static IP in order to remote desktop to an Ubuntu machine (so I keep reading).

• Connecting to an Amazon AWS database [closed]

  so I'm a bit overwhelmed/bewildered by the whole concept of networking/remote-desktop , etc. The context is that - in my company I need to access a remote database. The standard way I use is to first connect using a VPN-Client( called Shrew Soft Access manager), then once that says: "network device configured tunnel enabled" I'm good to connect using windows "Remote Desktop Connection" . But now our company set up an Amazon AWS database, and I'm told I need to connect, and I ony need to use RDP. So I tried the standard windows one - but it doesn't work. On wikipedia , I looked up remote desktop sftware and downloaded one called VNC Viewer. but it doesn't work. Any advice/tips/comments appreciated EDIT: YAYA! I finally got a little more connected . • Syncing Google Desktop Scratch Pad

  I'm a long time user of Google Desktop Scratch Pad and I would like to be able to put the note in the cloud and make it accessible from all my electronic units. I'm working towards changing the filepath Scratch Pad uses to retrieve the .txt to lead to a DropBox folder. As the Desktop Scratch Pad is discontinued I've had no luck in retrieving the API, but what I've got so far is this: The scratch pad data is located at: C:\Users[user]\AppData\Local\Google\Google Desktop\a3d83d5fa2e9\scratchpad.txt The registry keys related to Google Desktop is located at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Desktop I'm guessing the Scratch Pad app itself is located at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Desktop\Components I have limited experience with the registry, so I'm not able to translate the binary and hexadecimals, but I'm hoping that the path location is in there somewhere. I've tried using a bunch of other noteapps (including the 'new' scratch pad in chrome) but haven't been able to find one that suits my needs as Desktop Scratch Pad. Hence the effort in this matter. I may be way off and I'm not sure if this is possible to do, but I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

• Problem! I can't add work areas in gnome flashback ubuntu 14.04 or make the alt-tab work!

  Please, I have been dealing with the alt-tab problem for a long time. I have alreade check keyboard shortcuts in the configuration panel but it still doesn't work. (I already had this problem in ubuntu 12.04, but since I installed 14.04 another problem came arround. I can't add work spaces. I tryed changing the amount of work areas by right clicking in the desktop's miniature but it does't chenge. Anyone can help me find this parameters in a file wich I may be able to edit using "sudo nano" or something similar? Thaks! PS: I also have problems with the backlight but that may be another issue since I had to install samsung-backlight in 12.04 but it isn't availabe for 14.04. I just mention it in case someone knows somthing about it.

• What is the best cross-platform language for desktop applications? (Java, Adobe Air, Flex, Silverlight??, Anything Else)

  My business partner needs a desktop application programmed, and it needs to be cross-platform as he wants Mac owners (OS X) to be able to run it as well. This, of course, is a bit of a problem for me as I program in PHP for my web projects and exclusively in C# (formerly used Visual Basic) for my desktop apps. I've been using (and love) NetBeans for my PHP stuff, and love Visual Studio just as much; they're both excellent IDEs. With this in mind, I'd like to find a language and IDE that's as similar to Visual Studio as possible (or at least something that makes development as easy as it does) for my cross-platform application development. In fact, if there is a language I can use with VS I'd be extremely happy. I realize that NetBeans has a Java Desktop App IDE, but have been having problems with it (my question in regards to that issue is here. I am also not sure that I really want to learn and use Java if there is a better, easier option out there. Obviously, the first language that came to mind that I can use cross-platform was Java, but I've also heard of people using Adobe Air, as well as Flex being used. I've never programmed in any of those languages, and as such have no frame of reference from which I can decide which would be best for me. I'm also not sure what other options there may be for me; perhaps there's another language I can use that'd be better than the three options I've already provided. (Can you make desktop apps with Silverlight? If so, did MS make an interpreter that will get them to work on OS X?) I like the syntax of C# quite a bit, and the Visual Studio IDE makes it extremely easy to make my apps with. As such, I'd like to find something that'll work as well for me with the cross-platform shatner as C# and its IDE does with my Windows apps. Thanks in advance for your help/opinions!

  Are you never more than a few steps away from your PC and want to keep up with comments on your blog?  Then here’s how you can stay on top of your WordPress comments right from your desktop. Wp-comment-notifier is a small free app for Windows that lets you easily view, approve, reply to, and delete comments from your WordPress blog.  Whether you have a free WordPress.com blog or are running WordPress on your own server, this tool can keep you connected to your comments.  Unfortunately it only lets you manage comments at one blog, so if manage multiple WordPress-powered sites you may find this a downside.  Otherwise, it works great and helps you stay on top of the conversation at your blog. Get notified with wp-comment-notifier Download the wp-comment-notifier (link below) and install as usual. Run it once it’s installed.  Enter your blog address, username, and password when prompted. Wp-comment-notifier will automatically setup your account and download recent comments. Finally, enter your blog’s name, and click Finish. Review Comments with wp-comment-notifier You can now review your comments directly by double-clicking the new WordPress icon in your system tray.  The window has 3 tabs…comments, pending, and spam.  Select a comment to reply, edit, spam, or delete it directly from your desktop. If you select Edit, then you can edit the HTML of the comment (including links) directly from within the notifier. You can approve or permanently delete any spam messages that are caught by your blog’s spam filter. Whenever new comments come in, you’ll see a tray popup letting you know how many comments are waiting to be approved or are in the spam folder.  Click the popup to open the editor. Now, you can directly approve that pending comment without going to your WordPress admin page.  When you’re done, just press Enter on your Keyboard to post the reply. Or, if you want to reply to the comment, click the reply link and enter your comment in the entry box at the bottom. Finally, you can change the settings from the Configuration link in the tray button or by clicking the gear button on the bottom of the review window.  You can change how often it checks for new comments, not to start the notifier at system startup, and edit your account information. • How to force a login for an administrator when using Remote Desktop Connection and fast user switching enabled?

  Scenario: I am at work. I want to remote desktop into my machine at home. Problem is, my 5-year-old daughter is playing games on Starfall.com (or something similar) on her (non-admin) account. When I attempt to connect I see this message: Another user is currently logged on to this computer. If you continue, this user has to disconnect from this computer. Do you want to continue? I click Yes and then see Please wait for 'UserName' to respond This presents my daughter with an Allow/Disallow dialog on whether to let me connect. She clicks Disallow (or No or whatever it says) and then I see 'UserName' has denied your request Question: How can I force my account to log in and disconnect her session? Additional Info: My account is an administrator account. My daughter's account is a non-administrator account. Home machine is Windows 7 Pro with fast user switching enabled. Turning off fast user switching is not an option (Kyle pointed out in his answer that turning it off would allow the admin to force another user off). I would keep fast user switching's ability to change accounts without closing the previous account's session over being able to force myself to connect.

• How do I improve my screen resolution in Windows Remote Desktop?

  I'm RDP'ing into a Win2K3 machine from a WinXP machine, and I cannot stand the low screen resolution I get on the Win2K3 box. Text is too large and the graphics/colors aren't very smooth. How do I improve this? If I right-click on the desktop of the remote machine and go to Properties - Settings, I see that the screen resolution is set to 1280x1024 (should be okay, I would think), and the color quality is Medium (16 bit) (not optimal) and I don't have the option to change either setting (because they're set in the .rdp file for the session, right?). If I move over to the Appearance tab, I see that font size is set to Normal, with no option to make it smaller. The thing is, these settings are close to what I have on the XP machine I'm RDP'ing in from. The only difference (in those settings) is the color quality, which is 32 bit. Any ideas on how I can improve the situation? Other tidbits: The graphics card on the Win2K3 machine is ATI ES1000. I think I have the latest drivers for it. I'm running VMware Workstation on the Win2K3 machine, and if I create a Win2K3 VM and RDP into it from the XP machine, the resolution is just fine.

• Is Hyper-V server suitable as a desktop testbench?

  At the moment we are running a test bench with several desktop computers, that are reimaged every time we need to test on a different operation system. Also because different versions of our software is tested on each image, we have to install our software every time we want to test it. The problem we have had with going with a virtualization technology is that our software is depending on directx/opengl and 3D acceleration, and this has not been something that virtual machines have excelled at. With the release of SP1 for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V has gotten better 3D acceleration support, so we are looking into virtualizing our testbench using this. Our test scenario would most likely be something close to this: 1. Remote into the hyper-V server and load the test VM needed for the current tests 2. Remote into the VM and install the new version of the software 3. Run the tests It would be nice, but not essential, if our support team could remote into the VMs to match the users OS+software combination when doing support. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of settup with hyper-v?

• What is the max connections via remote desktop for a small server?

  I have a small server running MS Server 2012. The CPU is a Xeon E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors, 8 GB RAM. Main HD is a Samsung 840, and the big storage is a 4 disk WD Black Raid 10 Array in a Synology NAS enclusure. My question is: given this hardware, approximately how many users can the system support via "Remote Desktop Connection"? Assume there are no licensing limits. These are not admin users. I know there is a two admin limit. This boils down to: What resources does one remote connection require? RAM? % of the CPU? Networking bandwidth? I guess the base case would be for a conection where the user is inactive or simply browsing cnn. Once you know this, you know how many you could fit on the machine before something is maxed-out. In reality, users would be mostly on Excel (multi-MB spreadsheets). I know the approx. resources currently required by each copy of Excel.

• Remote Desktop Services Licensing - Does server have to have a RDS role?

  I recently set up a "micro" size Windows 2008 Datacenter server on Amazon AWS. My small group needs several concurrent RDS users to be able to access the machine. Without installing the "Remote Desktop Server" role, it allows 2 concurrent connections. I read on MS' website that in order to set up multiple users, we needed to install the RDS role. I did so, but now the application we are trying to share is running much slower than it was before. Prior to the role installation, it was taking about 5 seconds to open; now it is taking a few minutes to open -- without any other users logged on except me. My assumption is that the RDS role may be too much for this micro instance to handle, and currently, changing to another size instance is not an option (it may be possible later if we were to receive enough funding). This leads me to the following questions: 1) Is it a sensible assessment to assume that it is the RDS role is slowing things down, or are there other things that I could look at to speed it up? We are talking about a machine with ~600MB of memory. 2) If I revert back to the pre-RDS role, is there any legitimate way (in terms of purchasing RDS licenses) to get more than 2 concurrent desktops? I did read this, and am not questioning that the answerer is knowlegeable; but someone else may have some other experience. I am also making it clear that we want to do this in a legitimate way. Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be provided! EDIT: if it is helpful in answering the question, the application in question is a Lotus Approach database. Also, I am asking this from a technical perspective: not a legal one. I want to know if it is possible to install valid licenses without the RDS role.

• how to run an ActiveX that must be visible and topmost on a server without a desktop?

  We're writing a server application that needs to use an ActiveX object that must be visible and Top-Most otherwise it doesn't render correctly. The challenge is that servers typically don't have an active desktop, and therefore the applications should not require one. Ours does. I must use this ActiveX, and I don't have access to the source code. When running from within remote-desktop everything works fine as long as the session is open. As soon as the session closes it stops working. I'm guessing this is because there is no desktop. Any ideas how I can work this out in a secure and robust way?

  Fist of all, when I say "run a desktop app in a applet" I mean do a Applet application that runs off-line, instead of a Desktop application that runs inside a JFrame. The little I know about applets (and maybe something I say is wrong, please correct me) is that applets have all permitions not granted by default. Also, the applets run inside a Sandbox, that does not allow information in or out without explicity permition. So, if I am focused on security in my application, its best to run it inside an applet (off-line, for a desktop application) then inside a JFrame. Is it right?

  Howdy fellow computer geeks, I am the owner of a local computer repair business that primarily services its clients on-site. On the occasions that we do service the machines in the office we generally have one of our techs pick the computer up while they are out and about and bring it back with them. Only rarely will we require the customer to bring us the computer themselves. In order to reduce costs, be much more efficient, and potentially expand our market far beyond what would be feasible with travel required; I am looking at ways that we can service our clients remotely whenever possible. What we're in need of is a solid remote desktop application that will be incredibly easy for our customers to connect to, as well as be robust enough that we don't need the client babysitting the computer during the entire repair. Ideally I would like to use a web-based solution so that we don't have to walk the customers through installing, connecting, and configuring it over the phone. This would be unacceptable because of the level of service they are used to. Effectively we'd want them to be able to just go to a URL, enter a PIN or something, and then they are connected and ready to rumble. (Obviously the option to just email them a link that'd do all this for them would be what we'd be aiming for) Along with the ease of use factor, we would need the product to not require any further intervention on the part of the client after we have connected. Nobody is going to be happy if we have to call them every 15 minutes so they can reconnect to us every time we reboot - so auto-reconnect is an absolute must. The only product I know of right now that does any of this is LogMeIn Rescue. It allows unattended access, the applet is lightweight and installs quickly, and the customer can either enter a PIN on the site or just click a link emailed to them in order to connect. The only real downside I see to LogMeIn Rescue is that it's $120.00/month per technician. While we'd ultimately end up saving far more than that per month just in fuel costs alone, I'd like to explore any other options out there that I may not have come across. So - Are there any equally good products out there? If so what are they, why do you recommend them, how have you been utilizing them yourself, and what do they cost? • Maximizing after moving RDC window between different size monitors

  My Win7 system has two monitors of different sizes. When I open a Remote Desktop Connection on one monitor set to use full screen, both the RDC window and the remote system's desktop fills the monitor. If I then move the window onto my second monitor (1-Restore Down button to make it movable; 2-Drag window to other monitor; 3-Maximize button to fill monitor) the RDC window fills the monitor, but the remote system's desktop remains the same size it was before. Thus, if I move from the larger to the smaller monitor I have scrollbars to see the whole remote desktop, while if I move from the smaller to the larger monitor the remote desktop occupies only a portion of the monitor. My workaround is to close the RDC window completely then re-establish it on the other monitor. Is there a way to avoid this overhead and just resize the remote desktop to fit?
