Is there any way to properly display negative time spans in Excel?

Is there any way to make Excel show a negative time span? If I subtract two time values (say, when subtracting the actual amount of time spent on something from the amount of time planned for it) and the result is negative, Excel just fills the result cell with hashes to notify me that the result cannot be displayed as a time value. Even OpenOffice.org Calc and Google Spreadsheets can display negative time values. Is there a way to work around that issue by using conditional formatting? I really don't want to create some workaround by calculating the hours and minutes myself or anything like that.

Set an Excel cell's color based on multiple other cells' colors

I have an Excel 2007 spreadsheet for a list of products and a bunch of factors to rate each one on, and I'm using Conditional Formatting to set the color of the cells in the individual attribute columns. It looks something like this: I want to fill in the rating column for each item with a color, based on the color ratings of its individual attributes. Examples of ways to determine this: the color of the category in which the item scored worst the statistical mode of the category colors the average of the category ratings, where each color is assigned a numerical value How can I implement any or all of the above rules? (I'm really just asking for a quick overview of the relevant Excel feature; I don't need step-by-step instructions for each rule.)

Windows 7 formatting HD

I have an Acer Aspire 5610 that I am trying to put an Operating System back on. I am trying to install windows 7 32-bit and it will not go through the install. Not sure why. I am now trying to reformat the hard drive and start with a fresh formatted HD. No other partitions. The problem is that the install disk is not doing the format it is giving me an error. The error is 0x8007045d. I am at a loss. This is the first time running into this issue. Please Help.

Formatting LVM partition with HFS+

I've already tried fsck.hfsplus from hfsprogs, which doesn't do anything at all, and gparted (doesn't work with LVM). Are there any other ways to do that? If all else fails I have OSX install DVD, but I'm not sure if its installer would see a LVM partition (and running it just to check that would be quite troublesome, as I don't have a DVD drive ATM).

Formatting a former RAID 0 drive through USB

I'll try to be as specific as possible here: I was using two Hitachi 2.5" 500 gb HDDs in my Gateway P-7805u laptop in a RAID 0 configuration. The array was causing the laptop to run extremely hot, however, so I removed them and deleted the RAID array through Intel Matrix HDD manager. I did a clean install of Windows 7 on the original 320 gb HDD that came with the laptop. I never did format the original RAID array HDDs before taking them out of the computer. Now, I am attempting to format the Hitachi 500 gb RAID array HDDs externally through a USB external enclosure. The external HDD drivers install on my clean install OS, but when I go into 'My Computer' there is no external drive available. I cannot format in CMD Prompt because my computer will not designate a drive letter to the external HDD. The drivers install and the HDD is recognized as a Hitachi external drive, but nothing seems to show up in my computer window. I need to know if there is a way to format these drives to NTFS externally.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to indent a nested bullet point in a table cell the proper way?

Open Word and insert a table (1 x 1 will work just fine). Right-click in the table and, in the context menu, select "Bullets" and a bullet image from the bullet library. Type something and press enter. Type something else, but, instead of clicking enter, right-click and select "Increase Indent" Notice something else moves into the proper indentation of a nested bullet: Outside of a Word table, you would simply press tab to get this behavior, but I want a keyboard shortcut (if available) to do this inside the table. This is what I've tried: Ctrl + Tab: Just indents the text, not the bullet Ctrl + T: Same as Ctrl + Tab Ctrl + M: Indents the text and the bullet but does not change the bullet style Can this be done outside the right-click context menu?

Vim: change formatting of variables in a script

I am using vim to edit a shell script (did not use the right coding standard). I need to change all of my variables from camel-hum-notation startTime to caps-and-underscore-notation START_TIME. I do not want to change the way method names are represented. I was thinking one way to do this would be to write a function and map it to a key. The function could do something like generating this on the command line: s/<word under cursor>/<leave cursor here to type what to replace with> I think that this function could be applyable to other situations which would be handy. Two questions: Question 1: How would I go about creating that function. I have created functions in vim before the biggest thing I am clueless about is how to capture movement. Ie if you press dw in vim it will delete the rest of a word. How do you capture that? Also can you leave an uncompleted command on the vim command line? Question 2: Got a better solution for me? How would you approach this task?

Excel - Variable number of leading zeros in variable length numbers?

The format of our member numbers has changed several times over the years, such that 00008, 9538, 746, 0746, 00746, 100125, and various other permutations are valid, unique and need to be retained. Exporting from our database into the custom Excel template needed for a mass update strips the leading zeros, such that 00746 and 0746 are all truncated to 746. Inserting the apostrophe trick, or formatting as text, does not work in our case, since the data seems to be already altered by the time we open it in Excel. Formatting as zip won't work since we have valid numbers less than five digits in length that cannot have zeros added to them. And I am not having any luck with "custom" formatting as that seems to require either adding the same number of leading zeros to a number, or adding enough zeros to every number to make them all the same length. Any clues? I wish there was some way to set Excel to just take what it's given and leave it alone, but that does not seem to be the case! I would appreciate any suggestions or advice. How to parse out MS Word formatting?

I have a rich html textbox on my asp.net mvc application. The rich html textbox is some jquery plugin that I use and has basic stuff like bold,underline and etc. Now I am anticipating that people will maybe write something in word and then copy and paste it into my textbox. However I limit the number of characters a person can have. This is a test to show how much formatting gets made. • One • Two • Three So I wrote that above(it does not copy to well into here). Basically it is a line of text and "how" is bold and the "one,two,three" are a bullet list. Word says it is 70 characters long with spacing. DSOFramer.ocx Hosting word documents in 64 bit Windows Forms

It looks like the DSOFramer.ocx component is not available for download anymore from MSDN as described here. Also the DSOFramer component is a 32 bit component. Given this, i have 2 questions: Is there any other alternative for hosting a word document in a Windows Form apart from using the DSOFramer.ocx component? If i move to Windows 64 bit operating system, and run the windows form as a native 64 bit process, then how do I host the word document in a 64 bit process?

hi all , im having problems with formatting for a UITextView. my app pulls in XML, saves some of it to a string , and then displays the text in a UITextView. it understands if you put a return in there, and it starts a new line. but i want to put paragraphs in there, any idea how i can pass that information without doing multiple UITextViews Thanks :)
